This review is for the VETCO area of the store & not the grooming or store as a whole. Came today for an appointment for my pup. She was receiving a booster for vaccines she got 4 weeks ago. And despite me visiting the edison location without any issues of course n.plainfield seemed to find every an anything to upcharge me for more vaccines, testing and flea preventative treatment. I felt downright harassed when signing in for my pups appointment. It felt like they're trying to nickel & dime for everything because so many stores have closed, this location is trying to carry the whole business on their shoulders by trying to bring in as much revenue as possible. Despite telling the young woman that my dog was on flea meds, she said they weren't good enough and to use what she was recommending. Excuse me? Then she insisted my dog needed to have a blood test. Why havent any of the other locations pushed for this? It was beyond annoying. Despite my appointment being at 4, we didn't leave until almost 5 with all the harassing upselling and waiting our turn to be seen by the vet. There were pleasant and is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1. I understand informing people, but please dont be pushy. Had I listened to this woman, I wouldve walked out with a $600 bill. read more

Grooming here, nail cutting is the best in the area. Tried petsmart for awhile because of convenience but never satisfied, even decided to look up YouTube and do it myself. Ali and her new trainee did such a beautiful job with my 3 year old Golden Retriever Charlie. He loved Ali and couldn't stop kissing her during the initial check upon arrival. His fur was So fluffy and soft and he smelled like fresh coconut . Definitely will return for next grooming! read more

My dog had an appointment Nov 14 2023 at 4:30pm to get my dog vaccinated. Unfortunately, and due to high traffic, the GPS showed me that I would arrived late, so I called them to explain and the lady that answered the call, mentioned to me that in the mean time I arrived before 5 pm, It would be ok. After 40min drive I arrived at 4:40pm, at North Plainfield store, and the vets or personnel in the Wellness center said to me, non friendly and with bad attitude, that as I was 15 min late, they would not received my dog, because doing it took time and they were seeing other pets. I tried to explain, but they did not even considered it as a possibility. The store was empty, there was just 1 person. They simply didn't want to. Non coming back anymore to Petco. read more

Another company that contracts with DoorDash for deliveries and has literally no mechanism to correct mistakes. I ordered kitten treats for the new kitten arriving tomorrow on a day I was unable to leave the house. I got somebody else's 30-pound bag of dog food. Their suggestion at the store? For me to lug the dog food all the way over to their store and give it back to them. They literally have no way to fix this problem, so I have no treats for the scared kitten coming tomorrow, and some guy has a hungry dog and is out $60. Do not do business with any store that contracts with DoorDash for their deliveries. Petco told me to call DoorDash, and DoorDash told me to call Petco. In the end I got a refund. But I don't have the pet supplies I need, and neither does the poor guy who ordered the dog food. Both companies claim there's nothing they can do. Absolutely terrible look. read more

I had a grooming appointment for my dog who is handicapped. He's lost some use of his back legs so he wears special booties and he crouches a bit. When the groomer came out to meet us she told me that they couldn't service him because of his condition. My dog is no more handicapped than an older dog who is dealing with arthritis. No where on the Petco website does it indicate that they cannot service handicapped dogs but it does indicate that they have ramps and/or stairs for older dogs or the option to bathe the dog on the floor. I have been coming here for a few years. Always find what I need and have never encountered anyone rude or unhelpful. Sometimes the different smells ( pets/ food/ toys etc.) can be a bit overwhelming. Patty and Yendi ( grooming salon ) are THE BEST. So nice, you can tell they enjoy animals and are good at what they do. My dog is not the best with getting his nails clipped but they are always able to keep him calm and get a nice smooth finish. read more

I have 2 dogs: puggle (14 years old) and a husky (6 month old puppy). My puggle due to her age, sometimes they don't even try to cut her nails due to not "stressing" her out (I never have this issue at petsmart) and today, by a young grommer, was told my husky needs "training" and "socialization". If my husky needed socializing, she would've been bit her. Mind you, it was her first time getting a bath. My puppy has also completed training classes so the assumption was that she didn't receive none of those. If you can't handle ALL breeds and personalities and fears, DO NOT BECOME A GROOMER!!!!! Worst experience ever. Will never take my pets here. Rather take them somewhere else. read more

Five Stars for my most recent visit with Vanessa, Azia and Jason. They changed my perception on the store. Such warm welcomes, willing to help, just overall positive energy and vibes. A genuine interest in my puppy and his well being. Very refreshing. Honestly if I could only have to go to Petco when they are working... that would be amazing! Definitely need more crew like them! Also the Grooming staff just get rid of that one One Star for this review: The manager with all the piercings, let's just say she has no business being a manager. First off I would never buy a pet from a pet shop. .. you're supporting animal mills that don't really care how they come out and a lot of then are bred to relatives. Go through a breeder and or adopt, and always neuter/spay. That said, they do stock a whole lot of stuff, which I admit makes this store very convenient. I just bought a new kitten and was looking forward to deck him out in some cute cat clothes (you like that alliteration) and pick up the basics. We asked the manager for some help and once she realized we had just adopted, she gave us a huge book of awesome coupons (that they only give to new owners of adopted animals--as a way of saying thank you for adopting rather than buying). We saved $50 dollars on litter, a litter box, food, toys, etc. We were stoked! And she also gave us a carrier to put our little kitten in while we shopped, which was a HUGE help. The other sales associates there were also very helpful...this Petco has great customer service and seems genuinely interested in your pet's well-being. Unfortunately they didn't have a huge selection of anything...especially for cats. Only 2 or 3 aisles of VERY basic items, and not a lot of diversity in brands. It's a small store in comparison to most Petcos but they did carry more for dogs. Pros: -Great customer service -Good deals / sales (even without the coupons) Cons: -Limited selection -Small location I'd go back if I was in the area, but I might want to pick a larger Petco location for more cat options. read more

My friend's golden doodle went here for grooming. Oh my god, when I tell you how he looked! The groomer, who I don't know the name of, completely shaved the dog (which was understandable since he was matted). Somehow, the groomer "forgot about his ears", as my friend put it, so now he looks like fricking Dora the Explorer with his poofy ears. Also, he has a bald spot on his head and his feet were trimmed so horribly it looks like a deflated tutu around his paws. If you look up "dog haircut fails" or "PetCo grooming images", you can see for yourself how bad the dog relatively looks. It just overall was cut so badly. Again, I don't know who the groomers are, nor can I say that all PetCo groomers are bad. Maybe you can find luck with a good one. But to whoever cut my friend's dog's fur, I hope your pillow is warm on both sides when you go to sleep for the rest of your life. Or the opposite, if you're a psychopath and like it warm. read more

What's with the third degree interrogation Petco gives you when you want to buy a fish? I made it clear that I have over 60 years of experience with tropical and marine fish and know what I'm doing. The saleswoman and manager would not sell me fish (Bangai cardinals) unless I told them the size of the fish tank I was going to put them in. At another Petco the same day a sales woman loudly lectured a middle aged man that he had to have a cleanup crew of snails and crabs before he could get a fish! What's next? Will they require you have proof of vaccination against Ich and Crypto? Will they get a search warrant to see that we're not lying about the size of our tanks? It's legal to refuse to sell fish to some one but Petco is out of line with this. It is insulting to an experienced aquarist. Maybe they think they're being helpfull to the customer,animals and plants or maybe the corporate bottom line. Or maybe it's inexperienced tactless sales people between jobs at Starbucks or Kohls. Needless to say I won't be patronizing Petco anymore. Thank God there are still some Local fish stores around! read more

This store is NOT what I expected! The cat section is so tiny, you have a choice of toy 1, 2, or 3. The dog section is much larger. The employees are not very happy (maybe it's a miserable company to work for?). The animals in this store do not look well card for :-( This place should be closed! I have taken my dog here a few times. They cut my dog but did not tell me. I was disappointed with the responses I received from management and Patty. Another appointment they shaved my dog too low. Three visits to Petco, once in Watchung, NJ, and twice in Union, NJ in the past month. Both stores on route 22. Each visit I waited 40+ minutes in the fish department waiting to be helped in purchasing fish. Not once did anyone come over and ask if I needed help, nor did anyone even stop to check the fish area. These are the first three times I have ever gone to Petco because I usually shop in Petsmart. I will never ever go to Petco again. I don't know what their fish policy is nor the rules for staff in checking the fish area at least once every 15 minutes or so just to check the area in cases of under-staffing, but not even to see anyone in the time I was there is nothing less than ridiculous! Man I wish Pet Shanty was still in business! read more

This was a horrendous experience. Charged full grooming when she was simply washed. Terrible puppy handling skills. Puppy was so anxious that she had an accident while being washed. The "groomer" had the audacity to suggest that she needs to be trained. Extremely presumptuous. She is being trained. Upon picking up the dog they brought in a trainer that wanted to push training sessions. Instead of apologizing for the ridiculous comments, they pushed training. First experience at a different location, same company, gave me the wrong dog upon picking her up AND kenneled her all day. Disgusting. read more

I would give this place 0 stars if I could. The manager was very rude to me, and the cashier was extremely snippy. They told me I could say what I wanted but they wouldn't listen. They had a great variety of animals, but more than half of them were not in good health. I don't recommend coming to this location especially, but most petcos in general. First time getting cat food from this location. Very unfriendly staff. The manager checked me out and I couldn't even get a hello or a thank you. I said hello with a smile. It's was almost painful for this manager to say anything to me. Not a good feeling at all. If your having a bad day don't bring it to work.
