This is by far the worse petco I ever been to. I go get some feeder nice. I got by the cages or whatever they are called. I see employees playing with dogs in the isle , they ask if I need something. The selections have become even more limited and their treatment of animals for sale is horrendous. I just went in and saw one of their chameleons was extremely sick with two growths on each eye and it's "habitat" or cage was not well setup to match the needs to keep a chameleon healthy. This store is a few blocks away from my house and I like going here out of convenience, but this is the worst run store I have EVER been to. The staff here are so unorganized and do not communicate properly. I signed up for training classes for my dog, and the first 3 visits were all trash!!! The first training session, the trainer Erica was 15 minutes late, and no one knew where she was. The training area was covered with boxes, and took another 15 min to clean up. The class its of after that lasted for about 30 minutes, with the trainer claiming it was the introduction. The second session was scheduled on 4th of July, so I called to make sure it wasn't cancelled. When I called, the associate told me they didn't know, and that the trainer called off this day. I was not informed of this, but let it slide. The third visit was today, and the trainer once again was not there. I was told you that she was not scheduled until 4 pm, and my classes are at 2pm. I only go to Petco because they carry a brand of food that my cat will cut you over. She loves it because it is 80% pumpkin soup and 20% meat. We stopped into this one because we happened to be in the neighborhood. The moment we stepped inside the overwhelming smell of hamster/gerbil/ferret urine overcame us. They had a small cage of 3 hamsters up front and it was hard to escape the smell of them. The store was incredibly cramped. The scoop you own litter station was in a corner by the employee entrance to the stock room. And the dog training station had barely enough room for two small dogs to play/train in the window without running into the stacks of food. Maybe they should consider becoming a Petco Express and limiting what they sell? read more

This review is more for Petco's training classes than the actual store itself. I signed my dog up for 6 training classes with an instructor who works with 2 dogs at a time. The instructor is great, friendly and very knowledgable, however the space is just too small to accompany two dogs, let alone one. Since there was almost no space to train both dogs, I was moved to one of the dog food aisles to train instead. The aisles are very narrow and I spent half my time dodging and apologizing to customers for being in their way. Even at Kreisers, this can be difficult and I usually have to plan and call ahead. This Petco had exactly what I was looking for: Wellness, indoor cat, in an 11 lb bag. Now I don't have to spend big bucks on tiny bags of Halo at Whole Foods, YES. I can't speak for the rest of their selection, but they seem to have a large variety of both cat and dog foods, whether you buy the quality brands, or the pet food equivalent of McDonalds (seriously though, your companions deserve the good stuff!) Went in after shopping at Whole Foods because my daughter just loves pet stores. She is an animal freak. Although they don't have a lot of animals around (Like the huge petsmart), it was shot day and there was a huge line of people with their dogs. She had a field day petting them. The store is really clean and the staff is attentive. I got a lot of help when I was lingering in the fish area... baby girl walked out happy with a new Beta and food. The man even walked us to the counter to make sure the woman knew which fish it was.... didn't send me to the register blind since there wasn't a tag on the container. I'm not a Yelp person but I'm really angry. I ordered online for same day delivery for dog food. It's nearly 1AM and we haven't received the order. My dog now doesn't have breakfast. The only reason I ordered from the River Forest location is that Pet Supplies Plus isn't carrying her brand any more. The Staff at Petco are so friendly and helpful. Not a visit goes by where I'm not asked at least once if I need help looking for anything and the cashiers are always smiling. It's also a very convenient location right next to Whole Foods and Walgreens so I can do all my errands together. I love that they always have a few cats from local shelters in the store. Before I had a pet, I used to pop in from time to time just to visit them and on one of those visits wound up adopting a cat myself :-) Last but not least, they have a very generous return policy. I once bought the wrong kind of Litterbox Liners but didn't realize it until I had opened the package. Regardless, returning it was no problem at all. They typically put the opened products back on the shelf and sell them at a discount. read more

Although I do still find this store abnormally cramped and the prices higher than their competitors, I had a pretty decent experience there recently. I needed to replace my dog's collars, and they have a really nice selection of reflective collars that snap into place instead of using a buckle. This may be the poorest way to rate a pet place, but you can be the judge. I own a gecko. It eats about 50 crickets a week. Petco charges me about $5 for 50 teeny-tiny crickets every week. So what's the issue? Each week, either they short me 5-10, or give me EXACTLY 50 crickets. Which I guess would be fine if I bought crickets twice a year. But it happens each and every week. Listen, it's not like I'm going to go broke losing money on stupid crickets for my lizard. The point is that Petco probably pays $5 a POUND for these crickets and they choose to nickel and dime me (or cheat me) every week is pretty insulting. So now I go to Pet Supplies Plus on North and Harlem. Nice people. They essentially give me 300 crickets for the same price and thank me for my business. This ends my little fable. the good people at petco have been exceptionally amazing in helping my new dog & i adjust to living together. they have helped me find him the perfect pet food, got him actually interested in 2 semi-toys, and of course, have been working with me weekly on training him. everyone here is knowledgeable, friendly, and so, so helpful. i really feel like they enjoy it when my dog comes in to visit and they are so great to all of their regular customers. if you need dog training, go to madeline! i don't know how she does it but she has done miracles with my crazy dude in just three weeks. week 1 he was a humping mad man; we just completed week three and he knows 6 commands. i'm so proud of my little guy and so thankful for madeline. maybe this pet store doesn't have the greatest selection or is a little small, but it's definitely the employees that make up for all of that. read more

We recently adopted a three year old German shepherd, Peterson, from Orphans of the Storm (our fifth adoption from them over 20 years) and we went to our Neughborhood Petco for supplies. The staff were amazing. They were extremely patient and informative. Numerous times, they have been out of stock on the food or litter I need for my hamster and rabbits. Since I rely on public transportation and this is my only nearby pet store, it's a pain. This store always has a poor scent and long checkout lines. On top of that, they don't have the same variety/ selection as other Petco stores. I live in River Forest, and utilize Petco which I'm very happy to have in the neighborhood. This year I decided to try their Vetco services...I called prior and the staff instructed me to arrive prior to 4:45, which I did, what I didn't know is that their vet staff would be late arriving and setting up. They had a three person vet staff and the only one you could tell enjoyed their job was the the guy handling and calming the dogs and cats receiving the vaccines. The Vet was surly and very unhappy to to be there, if your so unhappy get another job! Please! I'm so sick of people serving the public and the rest of us have to be subjected to their unhappiness. Yes I realize that it's a factory assembly line production, never the less, have some pride in what you do. You get what you pay for, don't expect much in this case as it took 2 hours total from start to finish. The dogs and cats were nervous in the process as were owners alike for the experience. Oh by the way, please don't bring your young children with you! There was one person who brought not one but four children along with of course their dog. Really, not a fun time for the kids or for the rest of us in line. NEVER AGAIN. read more
