Been coming here for 5 years now ever since I brought my then puppy Gigi home. The staff is pleasant. Except for one a few years ago but that person no longer works here so it's fine. They have a great selection of products although sometimes it takes weeks for them to restock certain items. I usually rotate coming to this Petco location, Dirty Dogs & Meow and Kahoots. I have been coming to this location for 5 years. I've never had a bad experience until today. My dog gets the same exact treatment and haircut for the past 5 years. It's always just a trim, never a shave. Dustin N. continues to shave her neck and her undercoat and it always come out uneven. They can't keep a good groomer that knows what they are doing. I have read some of the reviews which contained negative comments about service, but this has not been our experience at the Rancho Bernardo store. Helpful, courteous, friendly staff is who we have encountered. The choice for us is between Petco and Kahoots, and the decider is which products we are seeking. Parking at the store in RB is usually effortless, though weekends can get pretty busy. It's also fun for us to meet the pets, mostly dogs, who people bring their pups for grooming or just for company. The dogs all seem to like it too. read more

I live right near this petco so I often use them for my dogs monthly food purchase. I am so sick of this location for my last consecutive purchases I try and do curbside and they have failed me everytime. The reason this is so upsetting is because everytime I get off my car to go grab my order after waisting 15 minutes of my time - the workers are always standing there behind the counter do nothing or chatting. I had a 12:40 appointment for my dog's vaccination. I arrived at 12:41 and got a message that the appointment was canceled due to no grace period during the last 30 minutes. The ladies at the check-in were patient explaining the policy. I respect your policy but here is the problem: I never received information for this appointment saying there is no grace period. To be fair, last time when I had an appointment at 12:55 I did receive a reminder saying no grace period. But there was no mentioning of last 30 minutes so I didn't know the same thing applies to a 12:40 appointment. If you want to reinforce your policy, please do a better job reminding customers. On the other hand, if your doctor really needs to step out of the office by 1pm, do you really want to have appointment in the last 30 minutes for every 5 minutes? Never come to this location for grooming. I have used Petco's grooming services for seven years, but today's experience caused me to stop. The groomer, Ash, and the store manager were rude and disrespectful. After a disagreement during check-in, Ash intentionally cut my dog's hair unevenly and failed to dry her. This Petco's service is very hit or miss, sometimes it's good and serviceable, other times it's downright awful. Specifically the longtime manager Megan is a spiteful bitch. I have asked her for help many times and sometimes she is helpful and other times gives me mean looks and tells other employees to help. The worst time is when I asked her for help and she left and never came back. I had to find other employees after 15 minutes of waiting. Not a bad spot and I usually come here because it's affordable and the items are of good quality. I don't bring my dogs here for grooming because I already have a groomer. My dogs did go there once and over the phone they told us one price and then once we got there they tried to charge us a higher price. Do not go to this Petco. There were not enough people in the pet care sections, and one girl was busting her ass trying to help everyone with no manager in sight. After walking around, I found a lady with a manager badge talking on the floor to another worker about their staff being depressed and laughing about it. The isles were not clean, there were boxes of live animals and fish just out, and I saw a worker throw away live insects. Pets Plus and other small businesses (dexters deli is a GREAT one) will be getting my money from now on. read more

Took my dog to get a basic bath and nail clipping here and afterwards her nails were cracked, crooked, and just all around terrible. I went back in and broached it with the employees who then told me it was because I did not pay to get her nails buffed. I understand with lack of buffing there will be roughness BUT the cracking and chunks of nail hanging off of her claws was unacceptable. Instead of correcting the situation I was then told I can bring her back in and pay to get her nails buffed when they should not have even been this bad in the first place. Okay I love this place. I have noticed the lack of associates on the floor. Is this store in danger of closing? I've also noticed the lack of purchasing the pumpkin frozen dog food (the one with pumpkin all over the packaging. I have found it empty the last three weeks I've gone, but there is an increase in those little pumping pouches - that are expensive and you have to purchase a lot of them. I do not like that, at all. I also find that the crickets I get here...I need small, they are for my small frogs. Mediums and large have been found in my bags for the last two months. Do u have a new buyer? Whatever it is, I would appreciate having small again. Just small. I get 100 each week, and the crickets are mixed. I can only use half. I spend about $500 a month on dog supplies and I donate about $35 at the register. So, what is up with the crickets since Mark left? I get about 50% large and medium in the bags every time. I have to pull them out and let them go so the frogs don't get hurt, so half my money is in the wind each week. You can see the small ones in the bottom of the egg crate stuff, the rest are so big and aggressive. Do I need to find another source? You get a lot of folks coming over from Poway Kahootz because they only have the large black crickets/very aggressive. I need to check them out and see if they carry the pumkin refrigerated kibble, or perhaps I can get it mailed to me through chewey. I found a reptile and frog store here in San Diego and I'm going to visit them this week, a bit out of the way, but I hate the thought of having to buy 150 "small" crickets to maybe get 85. It is frustrating. So, you're going to lose those people too, unless you figure out what's going wrong in the supply chain. Bring Mark back! Or figure out his methods, because this is just wrong! Ended up going to the vetco department to have my dogs nails cut and paid over $100. But I would rather pay the extra money than have to deal with such terrible customer service. NEGLIGENCE! I took my 10 month old puppy here for grooming in January and never again. He came back limping for over a month. I had to take him to Petcoach in Poway a week later where the vet said he sprained his ankle. The vet gave him a shot and rimadyl for pain. The vet said if he's still limping he will need an xray. The person who groomed my puppy is Dana. I tried calling to ask about it. They said it's possibly nail sensitivity but, didn't get any follow up calls after that. So what kind of nail sensitivity causes limping for over a month? I wish I never took him here for grooming if I had known he would suffer afterwards. We want to share our appreciation for the Petco family. We have been cat parents for years, and have enjoyed the benefits of Petco throughout all of them. Our home store has been their Carmel Mtn. location, and they have always been exceptional! Sadly, after saying goodbye to our 15 year old female cat in November, we had to say another goodbye, completely unexpectedly, to our sweet boy cat of almost 14 years last month. Having no more kitties to care for we found ourselves with an overstock of kitty food, litter and treats from past recurring orders, and our recent monthly delivery. While we were well past the 30 day return window, Petco was so gracious to accept our return, refund our money and handle the closure of our monthly recurring orders. 5 stars for the grooming staff, not the manager of the grooming area, just the grooming staff. The manager is not so nice. Only 1 star for the actually store. The store itself is cluttered. Stuff everywhere. It looks like they are stocking the shelves but no one is stocking and there is just stuff everywhere making it difficult to walk, especially if you brought your pets or your children. Literally a liability. There is stuff everywhere. And I have visited this store at all different time of the day, weekends, weekday, throughout the years, always cluttered. I hate to leave a negative review, but I don't know what else to do. For at least a month, the fresh water fill station has been out of service (this is where we can come buy water for our own fish tanks). The kind people that work there have been nice enough to fill one of my two gallon buckets with the water they use for their fish tanks (which I pay for). But what can I do to get the fresh water fill station fixed? I have been told by the people working at the fish department that many of us come in to get water and are frustrated. I don't want to complain, but also don't know how to get someone to help get it fixed? I asked the staff and they said they didn't know what to do either. There is an employee in the fish department who literally will not sell you fish unless you have a tank size to her liking! Keep in mind that the fish are 1" long... The employees concern is that in two or three years the fish "might" outgrow the tank. Stopped by today to pick up stuff for our new Betta fish . Nephews wanted to buy stuff for the new fish bowl . The store has ample amount of parking and is located next to staples . They also have a grooming section and dog training area . Big fish area as well . Not the most well stocked petco but oh well. I would tell upper managment that your store is very lucky to have these two ladies as they are both attentive, helpful, knowledgable and they both do more than they are required which I do not see very often. I purchased my first saltwater fish tank about 3 weeks ago and if it wasn't for Megan helping me by giving me key advice on what types of food to get down to the right supplements for my Blue & Yellow Tang as well as helping me get through the pitfalls of what to feed my hungry chocolate chip star fish, I don't know what I would do. For someone who has never had a saltwater fish tank it was challenging, however I felt I was very lucky as Christy the store manager was there for me when I needed help with getting the right items for my fish tank as well as helping to take sign up for the online service to help me save even more overtime. Kaleb really knows his aquatics. So far he's probably been the best person at Petco to help me. He knew what fish were compatible with the fish I already had, as well as the pros and cons of mixing each type. I've had Dwarf African Frogs for close to 20 years but just learned something new from Kaleb today about feeding them in mixed company. He was fast and efficient, and I appreciate that he pointed at the price of each fish prior to scooping them out. Obviously he's dealt with enough customers that notice the price later and change their mind. Good job! The only negative moment was when there were a lot of customers waiting to be helped. Kaleb asked another co-worker for assistance but the other guy shuffled off like he couldn't be bothered. I couldn't help but to think that this other guy heard Kaleb's request for help, he just choose not to respond. It's much better than to wait around waiting for someone to help you. I had a great experience with Sage in petcare. well...yup it happened ....we are now pet owners... we have recently brought in 2 guinea pigs to our family. got 1 here...and 5 days later brought home a second one. our first guinea has acted curious since we got him... at first very reserved but affectionate with us (understandable since he is a baby and now changed surroundings)... brought home pig #2 and #1 seemed much happier...but now kinda mean to us. we started to think that he might be blind for multiple reasons... we took him back in and Petco is sending him to the vet (and covering the costs since we have had him for less than 30 days). hopefully he's ok =( This location has been very good to us. read more

I am a nature educator and care for a number of animals, including birds, mammals, and reptiles. Went to the big Petco store to stock up on several items and came away sorely disappointed. A) Most small animal bedding was gone. All the bedding that was on sale was gone. Staff member said they were getting a truck of items in that night but there was no knowing if bedding was going to be in the shipment. B) Very little choice in small animal food. C) "Medium" sized dubia roaches were teeny tiny. D) No black soldier fly larva in stock. E) No hornworms in stock. (If this is a seasonal item, I'd suggest taking the tag off the shelf. F) Much of the reptile food was 50 percent off because the larvae were pupating. I took a look in a couple of those containers and there weren't enough in the larval stage to feed my critters. G) I opted for waxworms as a substitute for what I really wanted (bsfl or dubias). I fed my beardies about 10 and put the rest in the fridge. 10 days later, there were only a dozen still alive. (I am of the understanding that waxworms keep up to 5 weeks in a refrigerator door.) so yes there were exactly 50 in the container as marked, but half of them were unusable. Guess my lesson is to buy online from another source. read more
