Was in petco to buy some treats for my dog and witnessed a staff member named Mike who was walking around the store with what looked like a cocker spaniel. He repeatedly yelled at the dog to "shut up" and was pulling the dog on the leash so hard it was pretty much chocking the dog and lifting him up off the ground by pulling the leash to get him to be quiet. This just rubs me the wrong way because i've taken my dog here for his vet visit and grooming and now i'm wondering how he and the rest of the staff treat these dogs behind closed doors. I witnessed the staff member drop off the dog in a white sedan to a lady in pink as i was leaving so if that was you i highly recommend not taking your dog there anymore or making a complaint about that staff member. read more

I am rating this store based on the grooming experiences. Ms Bre has been our groomer for almost two years now and she is quite an awesome pleasure to our Koko. Bre is punctual and a such a beautiful soul. I love the location of this store, a few steps from some of my favorite shops and eateries. Parking is plentiful and it's never a wait here. I drop Koko a few minutes before her scheduled appt. and Bre has always been there ready to receive her. Bre is currently the only groomer here and I hope they are treating her super well. 9/24/2025 Salesperson Mike: He was very Helpful, Kind, Knowledgeable & Professional. Mike went above & beyond his job title. My daughter went into the store today about her betta fish issues. I was on the phone while he was talking to my daughter. Then I had to ask him 50 million questions from information that was given to me by Petsmart. I appreciate professional people. I could tell that he knew his stuff. I also told him to thank his Father as well for the way he was raised!!! I could tell that he was raised to do his research. When we moved to Suffolk a few years ago, I was so happy to find out there was a Petco nearby. However I have been so disappointed with this Petco's Grooming Dept. It's always something. Today was the last straw. I arrived to find that my appointment had been canceled. That was quite upsetting after making an effort to leave work and bring my sweet mini Goldendoodle on time. While I appreciate Bree's grooming skills, I believe there may be an opportunity to improve customer service in the department. It would be beneficial for the team to communicate more effectively with clients about any changes to their appointments. I understand the staff may be dealing with a high volume of work, which can be challenging. However, fostering a more courteous atmosphere. and some flexibility, would make a big difference. I'm willing to pay more or travel further to find a groomer who can consistently provide both quality grooming and excellent customer service. Thank you for considering this feedback. read more

Unfortunately I can't review the grooming service as it did not happen. My dog is a rescue from NC. As with most rescues, in my experience, they are given a random name. She was found on the side of the road with no ID. She was vaccinated 2 days before I adopted her. I have the certificate. On it was her random kennel name. Because that name is not the same I brought her vet info showing all the spaying and care she has received from the doctor. Called the vet and they immediately emailed a referral. Although the lady was not rude and checked with the manager, my sweet girl could not get a bath and her nails cut. I do understand having rules for the safety of all however, I will not be able to take her to Petco until she has another rabies shot with her name. The thing that upsets me is that I was basically made to feel like a liar. Why would I go to the trouble of providing all info I had(which is a rabies certificate)and call the vet to have them send referral just to have her bathed and nails cut?? Whew! Okay.. i've been going to this petco(university blvd) for years and they were okay but now since i've learned more about reptiles and am a reptile keeper now, they honestly do the bare minimum for their animals. let me explain. they have adult bearded dragons (had 3 2 weeks ago) now they have 1, in a small tank without any of the proper basking spots or anything. they also had a beardie with tail rot who wasn't there anymore today, they have a ferret with an eye infection. i also got my bearded dragon from them and she came to me with scale rot (she is fine now). i just think they need to research the proper care for these animals, they are giving beginners the wrong advice and the wrong resources. it makes me upset because they literally sell the correct stuff for at least a good beginner tank but they recommend the incorrect items. the tanks were gross as well. i have pictures. one of the bearded dragons had been eating his own poop and i saw 2 leapord geckos fighting (biting) eachother. my friend got her crested gecko from here and they were literally hitting the hide upside down trying to get her out and dropped her so me and my friend had to grab her for them and put her in the carrier, it's ridiculous. if they are scared or don't know how to properly handle animals to help customers then they need to be taught differently or they don't need to work there!! that crested gecko could've very easily dropped its tail! the employee literally admitted to use of not knowing how to handle the crestie! they also tried to sell me half dead meal worms. the customer service is okay and they are usually pretty stocked but they need to do more research on the animals they house. or at least train their associates! read more

Ive had enough bad experiences at the Petco on Military Hwy. The last one was today. I had a $62.11 bill. I had a $100 bill and a dime. Had to wait for an appointment for the dog groomer. I showed up for the appointment and there was no one in the dog grooming area. After 10 minutes I started walking the store looking for a worker and they had 1 person in the entire store! This person was clearly under the influence. I was there 2/14/24 at 1:20pm. I asked if anyone was working in the groomer area and she just stared at me. By 1:40pm I was leaving and asked her to tell someone so I wasn't billed for not showing up. All she could work up to say is "I'm sorry". This place is a joke... a very bad joke. This wasted an hour out of my work day to get my dog dropped off only to have to take him back home. read more

This store has really gone downhill after the pandemic. Management is a joke, as evidenced by the heavy employee turnover. They're down to one groomer , having lost 7 groomers over the past 2 years! The workers are polite & helpful.... if you can find one: this PetCo works with a skeleton crew & there's a high turnover (evidencing poor corporate & store management). I've been to Petco a few times since they opened several months ago. After a bad experience at PetSmart's grooming department, I refused to go back. When I found out that Petco had opened in Suffolk, I decided to give them a try. This location is easily accessible next to Kroger Marketplace. Here are my pros and cons at Petco: Pros: *I love their Pals Rewards Program! You earn 5% back on everything you buy and you receive 5 Reward Dollars for every $100 spent. When a bag of dog food costs about $50, it doesn't take long to get to $100! Their rewards program is way better than PetSmart's program. Honestly, if I continue to use Petco when I move, it will be because of their rewards program. *I appreciate the signs that say, "Petco encourages you to always consider adoption as the first option when thinking about adding a new companion to your family. Never spending another dime here. Totally unprofessional during a grooming of my 2 golden doodles. They literally shaved one dog to the skin and started on the other, but abruptly stopped and advised we needed to take her to the vet to finish. It is never acceptable to groom a dog in a fashion such that on its next outing, people point and laugh. read more

I went here to get my dog groomed and they butchered my dog. They started to cut him and then told me they couldn't finish because he was too matted. If you are a professor dog groomer, would you noticed the mattes before starting the groom. Mind this happened when the Pandemic was a huge concern, and no groomers were really opened. I traveled all the way from Brooklyn NY to get my dog groomed because New York was still under a lockdown. Then when I come and get my dog, they had cut his harness off and gave me back some cheap collar I couldn't even use because my dog and Shih Tzu and they must use a harness as their trachea's are too short. No water in the back or proper care for your dog while they are there for long unnecessary hours. The General Manager who had just been there for only two months left. Super sad to write this review. This store was awesome prior to the pandemic, but now just can't seem to adjust. As of review date this location does not seem to be able to keep groomers and that section of store is regularly closed. Their management team was formerly awesome, but each time we have recently visited, not so customer friendly. We seem to see a different staff every time we go in. I want to be careful here. As typical for companies like this, it seems like the staff and managers have been read the riot act from corporate and have their hands tied on the customer service side. I really hope they stage a come-back. We have tried to stay with them, but have to be honest and leave for now. read more

Had an 2:00 appointment for Dog Grooming. I admit I came in at 2:05 but when I arrived no one was at the counter I did not want to be rude and tap on the window of the groomers but after a few minutes I did. One of the groomers with her back turned to me just help up her finger. So I stood there with my dog 10 more minutes before an employee comes out the back. She ask for my dogs name and then say I have to reschedule because I was late. I told her what time I arrived and she said no you didn't I went to the bathroom at 2:10pm. I spoke with the store manager and asked her to look at her cameras and see when I came in but because your employee was in the bathroom 15 minutes I have to reschedule is absurd. And then you want to reschedule my dog for 2 weeks later. This is Poor Customer Service. Suffolk VA PetCo will never get my business again. read more

To the employee across the street who just had to yell "can you clean up his poop?!" Yes, I was getting to it, generally when you are holding your dogs in one had, two boxes and important paperwork on your dogs vaccinations in the other; it's difficult to do at the same time. I have doggie bags on my keys, that I used before I went into petco and inside the store when my second dog had an accident. I am very good at cleaning up after my dogs. I just needed to take five steps to put some stuff in my car so I could free up one of my hands. Maybe next time assess the situation before you rudely yell and embarrass a customer in front of six other people. Otherwise every other employee was very nice and had great social skills. The store is smaller than I'm used to. The only reason I came was for the wellness center for my dogs yearly shots, they were very nice and understanding. Came into Petco tonight, 12/02/19....not sure how many employees were scheduled tonight or were the manager was but no one was at the cash register to greet or ring up customer purchases. Once we got what we needed we walked up to the check out area and waited well over 5 minutes before we could pay for our purchase. Having great experiences at a Petco in Colorado, I was pretty happy to find out they were building one close by. I also received these neat 10 and 20% off coupons--but they were only good for opening weekend. So I rounded up my dog, snowflake, and away to Petco we went. The store itself is clean and bright. Ok side note--I sure hope on opening weekend days of all days the store is clean lol, so that is to be expected. I found the store easy to navigate, and they carried pretty much the same items as other big box pet retailers (the only other one I know of is Petsmart). The prices honestly seemed to be the same of other retailers of the same caliber, I really didn't see anything that was cheaper except the bully sticks. These tend to run a few dollars more at Petsmart IMO. I got a nice bag of small bully sticks for $8.99 and combined that with the 20% off coupon (I can't use the 10% off coupon until March). I took a glance at other sections (like small pet) and the store seems as though they carry adequate supplies for those. Keyword is seem (I don't own a small animal anymore so I can't really comment on their selection). Grooming: So I figured I would try to see if they could squeeze Snowflake in for a quick grooming session. She is a maltese and though I am wanting to keep her coat long, I would like to give her an occasional trim and clean up. They quoted me at $46! I initially agreed but I quickly called back and asked that she just get a regular shampoo and condition. Sorry, but where she gets groomed, I don't ever recall spending that much for the whole package (hair cut, nail trim, shampoo and condition, top knot bow). Anyways, I stood around at the grooming salon and the associate was busy typing away on the computer. She looked up at me and looked back down. I realize she was helping another customer but at least acknowledge the other customer you have in line and let them know that you will be right with them. I got the call she was ready and came back. Sure, she got a basic bath..but that was it. I'm sure they brushed out her coat as well as she felt fluffier. But for $32 I expected just a little bit more...at least a bow for her top knot??? She seemed happy so it is what it is. Customer service was alright when we finally went to checkout. She was very vibrant, asking if I found everything I needed, etc. Overall, I wasn't too impressed with the grooming salon. The prices need to be more competitive for me to even consider bringing her back. As far as coming here for any loose ends, sure I'll venture here. But I'm also an avid comparison shopper and will browse until I find a great price---which doesn't happen to often at big box retailers. Bought our daughter a dwarf hamster from this store. It died two weeks after getting it. When we took it back to the store, the employers were very rude and were literally joking about hamsters dying. They didn't care at all that our daughter was heartbroken over her hamster dying. The hamster was also stuck in a tube that connected to the cage and they refused to take the hamster out of the cage. The manager was not helpful and had no customer service skills. This is a new store, so I'm surprised they've hired nothing but rude, ignorant people. They also told my wife that they could only give her store credit since she didn't have the receipt, even though she had the certificate they provided her with the purchase date. She did end up getting a refund however. They left the box with the dead hamster on top of the ferret cage and when our daughter said something about it (who is 10 years old) an ignorant employee was said rudely, "We got it!" And then she walked away, leaving the dead hamster on the cage. This place is absolute trash and we will NEVER shop here again. read more

Yikes - the reviews on this place are rough. If you read through them, they are also pretty lame. Calm down people. This store is ok for basic stuff. It does seem a bit small and the selection sometimes seems random - like they have 27 versions of one brand of wet dog food and one version of the dry. I don't get it. Several times they have been out of cat litter - which I don't understand. It's a pretty basic commodity. The employees are not particularly friendly or helpful, but I'm not going to hang out and have a beer with them. I like it better than the other big pet place down the road - honestly, the employees there scare me a bit sometimes. Lay off the face piercing dude. If you just need your basic dog and cat food, they are much better at keeping it in stock and prices are consistent. They do give you $5 back with every $50 too, which helps. read more

I feel really bad for the animals. I originally was looking at a hamster but was told I couldn't hold it because he wasn't use to human contact. I've had ferrets growing up and not a single one they had didn't bite which is common for babies so they couldn't be held either. Don't they realize in order for you to them to be accustomed to human contact they need to be held? If they don't hold them or let customers how do they expect them to change. Brought my dog in this weekend for a grooming and was so happy to get him the spa treatment! When I got him home after paying almost $100, I noticed he wasn't cut at all, AT ALL, not even a little, he seemed drugged and his experience must have been horrible because when he finally woke up, he seemed to not trust me as if I'd sent him to the spa from Hell! I have no idea what happened but I'm so disappointed. Why was I charged so much for a cut when they didn't even cut him and my puppy is so good getting washed, why did they drug him and didn't bother telling me they did! I'm truly saddened, disgusted and really just mad. I feel like a Mom who has found out her child was abused! I can't even call them because I feel like I'll lose it! He went a few months ago and I was so pleased, this time was horrible, a complete waste of money. My dogs were groomed there and loved it. My bella hates being crated but she was calm when I picked her up, which is unusual for her. BeBe loves any store we go to. The most terrible experience getting my dogs groomed ever! I made my appointment two weeks ago and explained how my dogs are , that they hate getting groomed , that it takes two people to cut their nails . The lady who made the appointment so no problem we have problem dogs all the time we got this . Fast forward to drop off I remind them they have to keep my dogs together or they will freak out ... when they get picked up they are both freaking out and neither of their nails was cut! Spent $70 to get both take care of and not all of it was done. I call to complain and get well we can't pro rate any of it it's all in one price! What the heck! We won't be back that's for sure ! Lucky pets will get our service from here out. At least they listen when the owners say you have to keep them together. I called the next day and spoke with both an assistant and store manager.
