Awful wait time, I wanted to see if I was a candidate for lasik, their lasers do not operate on patients with farsightedness, but other lasers do so go to a different place. I got another consult and I am a candidate! They make you wait HOURS just to tell you you're not a candidate. Such a terrible experience at Petelin Vision. Came in for a LASIK Consultation and a tech (I think her name was Joyce) but not totally sure, woman in her 50's with dark hair did my exam. She was all over the place and couldn't find one of her tools, so then she said "whoever put this in the wrong place is going to be in big trouble". Whatever, not a big deal but I could tell she was unprofessional already. In the middle of my exam she said "oh no, I do not like what I see" she then told me "I'm not a doctor but it looks like you have Keratoconus in your right eye. It's weird because I've had a bunch of people come in this week with the same thing" I had no idea what Keratoconus is, but she told me it's a bad progressive eye disease that can lead to blindness. She then told me to come in and redo the scans. I left completely upset and called my ophthalmologist, who had just seen me and and had been seeing me since I was 13 did a topography scan and told me that he noticed some steepening, but that because I had the same vision since I was 13 and such a negligible astigmatism that stayed the same that it was not going to progress and not to worry at all. I went for a 2nd consultation at a different location and an actual doctor saw me, 4 surgeons reviewed my case and said I was a candidate for PRK. I then made an appointment with a cornea specialist who specializes in Keratoconus who did more scans and a full work-up and ended up saying it was mild inferior steepening pattern and doing topography guided PRK, which went outstanding! Every doc I spoke to said that a tech should never be trying to diagnose me and that I walked away never actually seeing a doc. This tech should not be diagnosing patients at all. I have never experienced this and hope no one else does either. read more

Contacting this business has been a nightmare. I had an eye appointment last year with one of Dr Petelin's assistants that was less than 15" yet had to wait over an hour to be seen. The follow up for my suggested surgery never took place. After repeated phone calls to his office, a secretary states the record showed my phone was not answering. They tried twice in one day, and one time several days later. That was filled their stated quota of attempts. I asked to speak to the office operations manager but she was out of office, sick. I received calls without problems all week so I am suspect of this claim. Could they have emailed me? Poor business management. I have gone to Dr. Petelin for 20 yrs and have 2 eye procedures done very professionally. The last few experiences with him and his staff have been disorganized and unprofessional. Petelin merged with my eye doctor's office (Affiliated Eye Surgeons) and it is now the Petelin Downtown office. List of issues: 1. Despite confirmation that my insurance was accepted and I was covered, 4 months later I received a bill for $200+! I was informed that they don't accept vision insurance and instead process it as medical and that they "cannot" honor the promised coverage during my visit. 2. They provided me an outdated contact lens prescription from 2 years prior. It took multiple weeks and phone calls to get the correct prescription sent over. 3. Wait times for care went from about 10 minutes to more than 45 minutes. While the doctor and staff seemed knowledgeable and competent, they were obviously overburdened and rushed to meet daily patient counts. I can't help but think I was receiving worse quality of care than prior to the merger. read more

Dr. Petelin and his team are absolutely amazing! From the second I entered, the girl had such a great smiling face and greeted me and told me that a technician would be with me shortly. The technician that grabbed that came to get me was extremely nice and told me exactly what was gonna happen throughout the appointment and got me ready with some testing And was very thorough and then I waited a little bit of time not too bad and then I saw Dr. Petelin. Dr. Petelin answered all my questions. I don't feel like he tried to upsell me. He just told me what would be good for me. Later I met with counselors that gave me my surgery dates and times and from there everything went pretty smooth. I had my surgery which was cataract surgery in both eyes and I feel like I see pretty good thanks Dr. Petelin and staff! Also, the office is absolutely beautiful. read more

I have been going to Petelin Vision for a couple years just to get basic eye exams. I decided to get the consult for the Lasik surgery so I didn't have to wear reading glasses, when I went in they told me I had cataract in both eyes. So I needed to get that taken care of and also lenses put in my eyes so I could see both near and far. My insurance was going to pay for some of it and then I had to pay for the lenses. The price I was quoted and what I ended up paying in the end was around $3000 difference. The billing here is awful and what's even worse is trying to get a hold of somebody,I spent numerous hours trying to get through to them. My surgery seemed to go well but within month after I was having a hard time seeing distance, especially watching TV. All the faces are blurry and it's even hard to read the words on the TV. I never had this issue before the surgery. I went in and they told me to wait a couple months because my eyes were going through a healing process. The dr said if I didn't like it I could get the lenses removed ! I was a bit shocked he said that. I called today and told them it's not getting any better so I made an appointment and I asked if this would be covered as a post op. The girl on the phone says no because it's over the time Period for that , even though I was told to wait. I would not recommend this place at all, for the first reason is it's a huge chain and you are talking to different people all the time. It's extremely hard to get a hold of anybody. I really don't feel like they even care once they have your money and the surgery is over. They are done with you. This is very upsetting especially because it's your eyesight. read more

I had a lens replacement surgery by Dr. Petelin hoping to improve my vision and quality of life. The Dr. made the procedure sound easy and highly successful including in this video, which strongly influenced my decision to go forward. I understood there were risks, and I signed the consent forms in good faith. Unfortunately, after surgery, I began experiencing significant problems with blurry night vision. The clinic did attempt to address it. I underwent a second surgery and a YAG laser procedure, but the issue persists to this day, making night driving difficult and affecting my daily life. When I expressed continued concern, I was told my expectations were too high. I also submitted a written request for a partial refund, which was completely ignored. I followed up through the BBB and the medical board, both of which acknowledged I signed the consent but offered no help. I feel that my concerns have been dismissed, despite doing everything right on my end. This review isn't meant as retaliation I gave the clinic every opportunity to resolve this privately. I'm sharing this because I wish I had known how common and serious these side effects can be, and how difficult it might be to get meaningful help afterward. If you're considering this procedure, especially if you're paying out of pocket, I strongly encourage you to ask very specific questions about night vision, long-term outcomes, and what happens if something goes wrong. So I was one of those unfortunate souls that got ICL surgery from somewhere else; some moron named John Casen performed it and it permanently damaged my eyes. Thus, I was searching out other surgeons for ways to fix my eyes. I came here and even though Dr. Petelin claimed to have many years of experience, he didn't even have a clue as to why my eyes were messed up. We scheduled an appointment later on in the year for follow up. However, he failed to keep his appointment so I had to reschedule. I even rescheduled much later in the year. When my appointment was coming up, he still failed to meet it. At this point, it felt extremely lame to schedule something so far in advance for it to be repeatedly not met. I have been a patient here for 10 years. My eye site has gotten worse and it's time for cataract surgery. I waited an hour, the technician who first saw me was grumpy and had resting bitch face. He actually told me I was left eye dominant, when in fact I am right eye dominate. When I saw Dr P, and asked about the operation itself, he told me to look it up on YouTube. He rushed me through the appointment and it was like he was treating cattle in a shoot. Had both cataracts removed and replaced with multifocal lenses at recommendation by Dr Petelin. Overall, not happy with these lenses and my corrective sight. I suspect there should have been different lenses used, possibly like the recommendation by another doctor. When I go in their office to be checked, they have the optimum environment and when Dr Petelin checks it, my vision in their environment is not representative of lighting where I have issues. Dr. Petelin's office discriminates against people with disabilities who require service dogs. If you or your spouse need a service dog, you are better off going to another doctor... one that has compassion and understanding. The clerk at the front desk asked me to provide ADA paperwork in order to admit my dog into the office, which clearly demonstrates that they do not understand the ADA service dog laws since there is no paperwork required to have a service dog. IT IS ALARMING that my 85 year old profoundly hard of hearing husband heard Dr. Petelin say that it would be perfectly fine for him (my husband) to ride his motorcycle to California next week even though he would not pass a driver's test with the current condition of his eyes. Furthermore it is shameful that the Dr did not have the courtesy to give me 3 minutes of his time after speaking with my husband in order to confirm and clarify what my husband heard him say. Even though I am profoundly well versed in the service dog laws, I did not want to make a big issue about it so I conceded to wait in the waiting room with my service dog. I did however ask to speak with the doctor after my husband's visit,because I have concerns about his deteriorating vision along with concern for his upcoming motorcycle trip. I voiced these concerns to at least 2 members of his staff. Unfortunately the doctor was too busy to speak with me regarding these concerns for my husband's safety and if he thought it prudent for my beloved to drive his motorcycle with not one but 2 impairments. I hope you sleep well at night Dr. Petelin because I am worried sick. I guess anything to make a buck as long as there is no inconvenience to you. Right Dr. P. and staff? SAVE YOURSELF THE GRIEF AND DO NOT TRY TO GO TO THIS EYE DR'S OFFICE, ANY OF THEM BUT ESPECIALLY THE ONE THEY CALL THEIR MCCORMICK RANCH OFFICE. This is the weirdest, sloppiest and most unprofessional medical office I've ever been in and I'm in my 60's, so I've been to enough to know the difference. I made an appointment to get a contact lens as a new patient, they ran me through 15 tests, charged my insurance and me $115 and handed me a paper eyeglass prescription. I told them that's not why I came, I told 3 people during this process what I needed. The Dr threw a hissy fit and began bullying me, Dr Shiffrin talked down to me like I was an idiot, "we can't order your contact we don't have any of the measurements, we'd have to start all over from scratch"!!! I'm thinking what the HHH is he talking about I just did 15 tests in here! He said go back to your old eye dr and get your last prescription and we can try to order one for you, ---WHAT? Ok, so I did that and it wasn't an easy task, it had expired they gave it to me anyway I drove back to Petelins office on Shea and Hayden they call it the McCormick Ranch office, it's nowhere near there but regardless it was on a Thursday with my papers in hand, walked in, the entire office was gone like a movie re-set... they had new staff, different business name, nobody that was there the day before was there, they said Dr. Petelin doesn't practice here on Thursdays, come back another time, what?!! At this point I'm looking for cameras and for my crazy sibling to jump out and tell me I've been pranked. Anyway, I arrive the next day on a Friday hoping the original set of people from would be back to work, they were, I handed the prescription to the Dr myself he said Ok, I can order from this, I can have it in 48 hours in broken English, they scanned it in I left. I called a week later to find out where my contact was, they said we haven't ordered it, we told you that you have to go to your Dr and get your old prescription because we can't figure out what your eyes need or what your measurements are to order it! What?!! This is looking more like a prank to me by now. Then, today after calling 3 times speaking to 3 people a girl started talking down to me "REMEMBER, WE told you that you have to get your own measurements because we don't know how to do that here!" like I was hard of hearing or a special needs person, I'm not I'm an Accountant gainfully and successfully employed who hasn't been able to work well without my contact lens, it was degrading. When I relived the whole story to her, she finally said yes I see your prescription here that you brought in but the Dr is now out of the office until next week so I'll have him call you next Monday, that will be November 25th I doubt if Dr Schiffin bothers to call I would be shocked and at this point I don't trust them with a contact lens or my eyes anymore. I'm consulting with an attorney tomorrow Nov. 22, and at this point and at a minimum I want my money refunded and the lost time from not being able to work these jokers caused me. I don't think the guy I saw was even a real eye dr to be honest with you. I'm embarrassed for them all and really P*ss*d off right now. I'm coming up on my one year anniv. (Jan. 4, 2023) of having right eye cataract surgery performed. I searched around after being diagnosed at Warby Parker, at a relatively young age they tell me, of having cataracts in both eyes and I better get them looked at. After talking to some friends and neighbors that used Dr. Petelin for their cataract removal, I decided to let him give it a go. On Jan. 4, 2023 he removed the cataract in my right eye first and recomended it be replaced with a lens implant that would see distance, being it was my dominant eye. The lens he chose was an "eyehance" lens that was SUPPOSED to offer me some midrange distance, along with what would be my long range distance. After a few weeks we would replace the left eye cataract with a close up lens. Then he said my brain would figure out which eye to use depending on what I was focusing on. Well, after about three months, the right eye was NOT SEEING LONG DISTANCE , as was promised. So Dr. Schiffren at another location tried time and time again trying to find a contact lens to wear over this new lens implanted eye, to see how far off this lens he implanted into my right eye actually was. Well, after about 8 different contact prescription tries, and three months, I felt skeptical to even let Petelin do my other eye, but at this point I figured I had to trust him. So, in April 2023 I went under the knife for the left eye (the lens to be implanted inside that eye was for near sight). Spin the clock forward to now, mid December 2023, and the left eye seems to be doing what was promised.......seeing close and midrange, but the original surgery performed on my right one for long distance is still blurry! And without a contact lens OVER THIS LENS IMPLANTED EYE, I cannot see safely enough to drive!!!! It is very scary and frustrating. His answer......"Just come on back and we'll do something called PRK, and I'll try and make it right.". Google PRK and see what that surgery consists of. It actually scrapes off the top surface of your cornea to reshape it. His exact words, "It's really no big deal...we do it all the time in situations like yours.". Well guess what, I've been to another eye doc for a second opinion and like I thought anyway, NO WAY I'm letting him do anything else to my God given eyes!!! So for near a year now, I've been wearing a contact lens over the eye with the lens he implanted into my God given eyeball that was supposed to correct my long distance vision....for without it, I cannot drive safely! So now I am sick and tired of using one contact lens in one eye every single day, and I am now going back to wearing progressive glasses....which is why I even let him implant these "special" lenses in the first place! They were supposed to cure my eye glass use for everyday purposes. I was completely fine with MAYBE needing cheaters for close up, but this is NOT what I signed up for. Needless to say, I am very dissatisfied with this man's ability, and as if that wasn't enough, the office staff is horrible about returning calls and getting back to you! If you're a Petelin patient, you know exactly what I'm talking about! If you're in need of cataract surgery, be very very careful with your decision...do LOTS of homework, and get two and three opinions before you let anyone touch your only two eyes. To Petelin Optician and Office Staff: Keep the refund check that was never issued, printed, or mailed. Keep the terrible customer service. Keep the terrible communication. In turn, we will never forget the terrible experience and in exchange for keeping our money (2 out of 6 custom lens sets ordered were unsat, unusable, unwearable yet brand new eyewear but we only pursued 1 pair being rectified), and we will aim to reach 25 potential customers who are properly and diligently Researching unprofessional eye establishments first. Recently had cataract surgery to both eyes, was encouraged to purchase upgraded package for one eye, which a payment of $3000+ was paid prior to surgery. Was then sent a bill for another $850 for the same lens by the surgery center. Surgery center said they buy the lens and have it there for the doc to implant on day of surgery. Why then am I paying the $3000+ upfront for the upgraded lens to the doctor? We were not told ahead of time about this addt'l fee of $850. read more

I am a contact lens wearer and the establishment where I was prescribed lenses gave me drops for seasonal allergies upon examining my red eyes. After 2 weeks, unfortunately, the drops did not have an impact on my eyes. 2 weeks of being unable to wear my lenses or makeup, I was able to see Dr Kalina at the McCormick location in Scottsdale. Total game changer! Dr. Kalina cares about his patients and listens to your concerns. I was prescribed new drops(which he also gave me a sample). The next morning my red eyes were gone! I was SO impressed with his knowledge, mannerisms, and expertise! He truly loves what he does! Also note, his technician, Denise, is just as kind and knowledgeable. They are a great team. This the most knowledgeable and brilliant eye center of which I've ever been a patient. Dr's Lu (father and son) both listened intensely to my concerns without regard to a potential purchase of eyewear. They found and diagnosed a long standing issue that had heretofore been ignored. Husband had first cataract surgery in early 2021 and it was a long wait but I assumed with Covid and fewer staff/limiting patients etc - fine. We arrived for 2nd cataract surgery at 7:30 for an 8 AM appointment. My husband was not called back to surgery prep until 10:20! He was ready to leave but after all the office visits, missed work, prep and pre-paid surgeon fees he decided to stay. Nurses said Dr Petelin has a lot of patients today. That's a scheduling issue and should never impact the patient! I will not be using this office when I get my cataract surgery! read more

The Dr in Peoria is great but the office staff and Optician is the worst. I ordered 3 pair of glasses and after waiting 2 weeks I was called to pick them up. All three pair were made with the wrong prescription. They said they would rush the new order but it again it took another 2 full weeks. I went in to pick them up only to have three boxes set in front of me with a here you go!! $2,200 with insurance later and no one bothered to make sure they fit correctly which they don't. I asked if anyone was going to check them and was told basically NO!! I'm the only optician here. I guess I will have to go somewhere else to have them adjusted to fit correctly. *MAKE SURE TO CALL AHEAD AND VERIFY YOUR ELIGIBILITY* I booked online via zocdoc for an annual eye exam. Everything checked out. The time, the insurance, and the appointment all matched. I arrived at 5pm to fill out the forms required for new patients. Note that they charge a $40 fee that's not covered by insurances for a "screening" - something that should be mentioned when booking an appointment. That alone made me want to leave as my normal eye doctor does not do this. I only booked here because I needed an immediate exam. After this, I waited 30 minutes before I was asked to sign for my insurance information. Another 15 minutes went by before someone else came out to tell me that they only accepted my insurance if you have a medical eye problem, not a simple exam. They are very "selective" in their insurance providers. I was then denied after driving 1.5 hours and waiting an hour. I'm frustrated with this practice because I should have been denied when I confirmed the appointment. No one called. If you're that selective, you need to be calling to make sure these patients can actually be seen at your office if you choose to use an online service. I should have been denied in the first few moments of sitting in that office, but the front desk girl left and another took over. I'm not sure if they didn't communicate or just didn't care that I was sitting there idly waiting with no knowledge of what was going on. Keep your patient in the loop! On top of that, I informed the doctor that I cannot see out of my left eye. You'd think after the hassle she'd be courteous enough to offer me a pair of sample contacts, which I've actually had happen in the past when I've had an appointment where the doctor asked if I could come back another day because he overbooked. Instead, she sent me on my merry way driving with only vision in one eye. Other notes: There are no prices on the eyeglasses that they have in the lobby. read more

Petelin Vision took over management of McCormic Eye Center. I have been going to McCormick Eye Center for years and have always been more than pleased with the service and the technicians and Doctor. Not so since Petelin has taken over. What a disaster. I had an issue with my eyes from eyelash extensions so saw the doctor at the Hayden Road location, said it was the start of blepharitis so use warm compresses and a very expensive prescription. That was the end of January Since then, my eyes have continued to get worse and I am unable to wear my contacts, my eyes and the entire orbital area is all broken out and red. I tried to get another appointment as an emergency to have them relooked at and was told there was no doctor available all week. The glasses I purchased from my annual checkup took weeks to arrive and it took me weeks to get a breakout on the over $600 charge. The glasses now fit because I happened to stop by on a Friday when NO ONE was in the office, including front desk staff, except one of McCormick's Eye Centers technician. He was able to get them to fit after I had made several visits to their on-site optical shop. The new staff in that section is totally unorganized, no idea what is going on with orders, when they are going to arrive and weeks to get glasses in. Then when they do arrive, the guy running that area (not Mark who was there previously and did a marvelous job) hasn't a clue how to get a correct fitting. It's tough to top all the compliments preceding my review, except to say I honestly believe they're well-deserved. When I began experiencing scary occurrences of blurred double-vision, based on the above I went to Dr. Luis Lu. This gentleman is a throwback from the "good old days" where doctors don't have a stopwatch in one hand & a credit card reader in the other. He carefully listens to your symptoms, then explains his diagnosis in language you needn't be a Mensa member to understand. Fortunately, Dr. Lu caught my torn retina just in time. So he immediately sent me to an excellent ophthalmologist specializing in these matters who thankfully saved the eye. But when my original problem persisted, Dr. Lu's further testing with advanced equipment revealed that my formerly remarkable/reliable eyes now had such a disparity in power that my brain was no longer able to selectively distinguish between the two vastly different images it was receiving (hence the optical confusion). Because of the uniquely challenging nature of this situation he amazingly discovered, Dr. Lu* referred me to another highly-regarded-by-peers specialist in that particular area who skillfully wielded his sophisticated Lasik tools to minimize the imbalance & restore my near-perfect eyesight! Praise to the entire team at this office -- especially optometrist son Andrew as well as administrative coordinator Yani & (super)receptionist Madelyne. All were educational/enjoyable to talk with. In my humble opinion there are many admirable, trustworthy eye doctors in the Phoenix area; though you'll never "SEE" a better one than Dr. Lu!! *A masterful surgeon himself according to numerous thrilled/grateful patients in the reviews, as well as an award-winning "Doctors' Doc" who lectures & writes respected reference books worldwide. read more

Always the slowest experience when coming in. Throughout all my visits, only once was I seen & paperwork was ready within a reasonable time but even then they did not have someone there to process my payment & upon my revisit I was greeted with another 35min wait in the empty office to run my payment & order new contacts. With my most recent visit the doctor gave me a pair of contacts that expired in Sep, 2017 (almost 3 years ago) & said it was okay to wear for about a week since they haven't ordered the strength I need in a while. Those burned my eyes & gave me an incredible headache for the 15 min I had them. Even though this office is conveniently near by my work & home, I do not ever plan to go in again. Safe yourself the time, and find another eye clinic if you have any self worth of your time. read more
