Was in the area again and lucky enough to get here in time for the LUGER burger..... AND WHAT A BURGER IT WAS!!!! Perfectly cooked as requested, with cheese and onions on the plate. I was able to remove the onions and enjoy. Got fries with it, and started with shrimp cocktail. Everything was awesome, I can't wait to go back and have another one. If you're looking for a nice place with great service for a quick lunch, don't overlook this spot. Yes they're mostly known for fancy and special dinners but they're also welcoming and friendly for lunch too. Check them out before 3:30pm, reservations recommended.

Full disclosure, my family almost never goes to steakhouses because we have access to really great meat and are used to just firing it up ourselves. But we are huge fans of the Peter Luger steak sauce & we had visitors, so why not visit this iconic steak house which is conveniently not located in NYC proper? We arrived a little early for dinner, so the restaurant wasn't crowded at all. They had us sit for a second at the bar lounge while a table was being assigned to us. The ambiance really plays up the heritage of the Peter Luger brand. We were seated towards the very back of the restaurant. I really liked the area since it was not too dimly lit. We started with the breads and wedge salad. I love carbs, and I liked that the breads were a little heavily seasoned. Caraway seeds are not for everyone, but they are for me. The butter was not very flavorful or soft, but I guess that's being too picky for free bread and butter before the meal. I chose the wedge salad because I knew I'd want crisp lettuce with my steak & also this salad comes topped with chopped bacon. The same thick bacon that people order on the side! It felt like a two-for-one dish. I enjoyed both the bacon and the lettuce smothered in blue cheese. The bacon really was nicely cured. We got the steak for two, which came on a sizzling plate precut. We did ask for medium-- not my preference-- because my guests didn't really enjoy eating meat not browned up all the way through. However, the steak came out closer to medium-rare. Initially, the plate was hot enough for us to try to sear the pieces. However, I found that the plate cooled much more quickly than I thought. The flavor of the meat was very prominent and the seasoning was well executed. Creamed spinach was a bit of a disappointment. It just didn't really taste like anything except a little muddy in aftertaste. The onion and tomato were nice, thick slices that helped cut through the richness of the steak. I did write on the reservation that my guests were celebrating a wedding anniversary, and they brought out some whipped cream and chocolate even though we declined dessert! Always such a lovely touch.

My boyfriend and I came back to celebrate his birthday on a Thursday night. We didn't make a reservation, but the wait wasn't long. We got a drink from the bar until they called us. We ordered a crab cake, a slice of bacon, a steak for two, hash browns, and creamed spinach. The crab cake was delicious and overall we enjoyed the meal. It was a lot of food, so we packed the leftovers. Then we ordered a hot fudge sundae and a key lime pie. I really like their whipped cream. It isn't overly sweet. We left full and happy. Of course, the service was great.

As expected Peter Lugers delivers again. Came to Lugers for the lunch only burger. Comes out hot and juicy -tastes incredible and a good price. The service is always great - and the servers are honest which I appreciate(giving actual recommendations). The ambiance is nice, can be dressed up or down which is nice.

Seating for 10 - no problem. Food was great. Everything cooked to perfect temps. Steaks at 3 temps. Black-blue, medium and medium rare. Enjoyed the Brocoli, baked potato, German fried potatoes and the wedge salad. Staff was friendly and attentive.

This restaurant is always busy, especially during the holiday season. Please note, they are cash only! We made a reservation for 2 on a Sunday evening and got seated a few mins after. They start you off with some bread, butter and their own house made sauce. We ordered the Steak for 2, Creamy Spinach, and 2 bacons. I didn't think the steak for 2 would be enough, but it was more than enough especially with other dishes and sides. The steak was cooked nicely to medium rare and was tender. For dessert, we ordered the Holy Cow which is vanilla ice cream with fudge and whipped cream. Their whipped cream is super heavy, so be sure to share this with everyone else! I would definitely come back and try their other dishes as well.

From start to finish, its all about the service. The greetings at the front door, the waiters shaking your hand, the appropriate sizes of the tables, the constant attention. The quality of the food, drinks and desserts. Luger's always stands out in the attentive staff. I have dined at most of the steakhouse in NY and the service is never top level as Luger's. Even if its been a while since you dined there, if the previous server sees you, he will come over to greet you and remind you where you sat and welcome you back!!!

Key Lime Pie with a mountain of schlag -- the perfect finish.

Classic Luger experience. The steak for two was perfect -- charred on the outside, juicy medium rare inside. Potatoes and mushrooms hit the spot. The Negroni isn't traditional here, but it worked for me. Went easy on the bread, and the famous steak sauce goes with everything except the steak. Finished strong with the Key Lime Pie and their massive bowl of schlag -- no regrets. Old-school vibe, straightforward service, and still one of the best steakhouses in New York.

Came here on a Friday night without a reservation. Waited about 1 hour for a table. It is cash only Got the steak for 2 and ordered it medium rare. However, that's rare. I feel like for a steakhouse in which steak is their specialty, it should be perfectly cooked according to your preference. The steak is tender but isn't fully seasoned all the way. Normally, I wouldn't care as much if it's a regular restaurant but I had high expectations coming here Also got the thick cut bacon and it tasted more like ham The creamed spinach was okay. I'm not sure how to really describe it but I didn't finish it Service was good and everyone was friendly Total bill with tax and tip came out to 250

Ok so I come here every Halloween. It's become tradition and to date they still got the best cooked steak. Is it expensive? Yes. But you won't find better anywhere. The crust/sear they put on the medium rare steak is the best. They will serve you up a few slices and then pour a bit of the oil drippings from the plate. A must. Who's watching their cholesterol anyways? I love their wedge salad too that comes with fresh blue cheese crumbles and their famous bacon cut up. Love the creamed spinach and the German potatoes. Still got room after? Must get the sundae and finish with a Luger golden chocolate coin. Roll me out of here!

My mom chose to come here for her birthday dinner last night so I had made us reservations. It was pretty busy. I think our server was named Francisco, he was great. The food was delicious and I think reasonably priced. Its definitely a nice place to go with your family. We had the bacon to start which was good. I think my favorite of the night was the creamed spinach, that was so good! We had the steak for two, which my mom and I could not finish. I appreciated the bread basket. My dad enjoyed his steak and french fries. We then had the homy cow sundae for dessert which was classic and delicious. Overall we left full and we definitely will come back! I want to try the onion rings next time. The table next to us got it and I was jealous haha. I definitely recommend bringing your family here for your next special occasion!

A classic and rightly so. The atmosphere is rustic, the steaks are perfect, the bacon YUM, the schlaggg dessert is insane and the rolls are great. Best steak house ever. Service is great.

Peter Luger Steak House Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Peter Luger Steak House

How is the service? I dislike paying good money for snobby attitude and being rushed out by waiters. I want an experience where I can sit down with my family and enjoy our meal.

I've heard the Brooklyn location is like that, but I always go to the Great Neck location. I always have a wonderful experience there. The waiters are friendly and willing to accommodate all your needs. If you make reservations for a weekend,…

No prices on the menu. How much cash do I need to bring for dinner for two on average?

maybe $500 for two. if you're over that (drinks), they will take one debit card per table.

Would order of steak for 2 and lamb chops good for 4 persons?

The waiter will guide you. Based on people sizes and ages. Prime rib for 2 and lamb chops for 2 will feed at least 5 to 6 people.

Does this restaurant provide any cooked steak n dessert deliveries to TX through any site?

    No no no

Do they charge "sharing fee" if we don't order the entree for each adults?

They charge $5.00 if you order a steak for one and two people eat it.

Does the Great Neck location require vaccination card to dine in?

No. It's not mandated on Long Island.

Are they still cash only ? Heading in tonight!

    yes

Has anyone tried the take out option? Do the steaks "travel well?" Do they just throw the steaks in a styrofoam container or is it more like Goldbelly where it is professionally packed/freeze dried with cooking instructions?

I have done the takeout and it travelled pretty well (about 25 min home). The bacon was not as good as in person and the steak cooled but it was still enjoyable. Served in normal take out containers.

    Do they deliver?

Yes, if you're within their delivery zone (you can find out via their website). Otherwise you can do pickup!

    Do they accept credit card?

Cash Debit or Peter Lugar credit card

Do they do anything special for birthdays?

They bring you a desert with a candle on it and they sing happy birthday as well . I pulled my waiter to the side and just asked him for the dessert with the candle , no singing he happily complied

    Is it wheelchair accessible?

I don't believe so. I'd call to ask whether there is a wheelchair entrance I don't know about though. Good luck.

Do i need to make a reservation even im tryin to visit by myself?

Absolutely! You definitely need a Reservation! Don't forget that they take Cash and Debit Card ONLY. No Credit cards! I hope this was helpful.

If we reserved for 5 but 1 is late. Will they not seat us? And If one out out 5 cant make it, how…

Typically no, they won't seat incomplete parties.

    Do they have Happy Hour?

No, but every hour spent at Luger's is a happy hour

    They don't serve filet mignons?

They don't have a separate filet mignon on the menu but the steak for 2, the porterhouse, includes a filet mignon. One side of the T-bone is filet mignon and the other side is a NY strip.

How is this location compared to BK?

The Queens location is more upscale and sophisticated. The Brooklyn location is "divey" and feels weird to dress up there. Both locations have excellent food, both are very pricey. Queens has better service. Brooklyn feels like the server hurries…

How do they do with large parties/private banquets?

    Not good, too expensive

I went in expecting to spend a lot of…read moremoney, and I have absolutely no problem doing that when the food and experience justify it. The problem is that this restaurant has such a huge reputation and people rave about it so much that my expectations were very high. Unfortunately, I left thinking, "That was good... but THAT'S what everyone is raving about?" The pros: We got the porterhouse for two, and to be fair, the steak was tender and juicy and cooked well. The home fries were crispy and delicious, and the fried zucchini was crunchy and delicious. There were also plenty of employees around, so we were never exactly wondering where our waiter was. But there were quite a few things that made me scratch my head: First impressions matter, and the valet situation was confusing. The valet station is right by the front entrance, and pulling in, it wasn't immediately clear where you were supposed to go. Then we sat down and got cold bread and butter that was basically a hockey puck. Seriously... how am I supposed to butter cold bread with butter that could probably break a window? I'm going to an expensive steakhouse, I intentionally didn't eat much all day, and one of the first things put in front of me is basically something inedible. It sounds like a small thing, but at this level of restaurant, those little details matter. Warm bread and spreadable butter is something the cheesecake factory can manage. How is this their norm? There were also employees EVERYWHERE. I appreciate being well staffed, but there were so many workers standing around and huddled together that it actually made the restaurant feel a little chaotic. At one point I felt like there were more employees than customers. I was also pretty surprised there was no drink menu. No beer menu. No cocktail menu. Apparently I'm just supposed to have the waiter verbally list every beer they carry and order a cocktail without knowing what it costs. My wife wanted a specialty cocktail, and there wasn't even a menu to look through. Her Tito's martini was $25. Again, $25 isn't necessarily shocking at a high-end steakhouse, but I would like to know that before I order it. And she ordered it extra dirty, yet somehow it came out really sweet. Not exactly what she was going for. Another head-scratcher: every single appetizer was seafood. I understand seafood is popular, but literally every appetizer? For someone who doesn't eat seafood, that's a pretty big disappointment. Now for the star of the show: the steak. We got the porterhouse for two. Tender? Yes. Juicy? Yes. Flavorful? Not really. This was probably my biggest food disappointment. The steak wasn't bad whatsoever, but it needed seasoning. For a steakhouse with this reputation, I expected that first bite to be a "holy crap, that's good" moment. Instead, I was reaching for the salt. Some garlic, seasoning, or something to give it more flavor would have gone a long way. $160 for the porterhouse. $16 for home fries. $16 for zucchini. $25 for a martini After tax and tip, we're basically at $300 for dinner for two, and we didn't even get an appetizer or a drink for myself. I'm not mad that it cost $300, I'm mad that it didn't feel like a $300 experience. If I went to a moderately priced steakhouse and had this meal, I'd probably be saying it was great. But when you're charging these prices and have people talking about you like you're one of the best steakhouses around, the standard is different. I'm willing to pay for exceptional. I just didn't get exceptional. Maybe I'm being overly critical, but if I'm paying $300+ for dinner, I'm going to be critical. If I had gone in knowing nothing about the restaurant, I'd probably give it 4 stars and say we had a good dinner. But after hearing all the hype and having such high expectations 3 is all they earned from me Good steak. Good sides. Nice atmosphere. Plenty of staff. But I walked out thinking, "That's it?" I wasn't disappointed enough to say I had a bad experience. I just wasn't nearly impressed enough to understand why everyone seems to rave about this place.
