A great local spot for dinner and drinks. Hi energy, good service, warm atmosphere and delicious food. The bar is always busy, and there tends to be enough tables for service which is good because they do not take reservations. My typical meal that I get is the Schouts Bay Burger, but last night I wasn't too hungry so I enjoyed the special soup - roasted tomato - and a side of Brussel sprouts. Best burger in Manhasset area (from Queens to Jericho). Ignore all the "best burger lists" (pay to play usually) and the clueless grinning content creators (influencing who? lol, beat it kids & take your selfies with you), I proclaim: SBT Burger is the best burger in a 10 mile radius. Period. Great bun, flame grilled perfection, tavern sauce so good no need for ketchup - I skip the pickled green tomato & add an egg over medium to the top. Ditch the lettuce too. Perfect beef to cheddar to bacon ratio. The rich gooey egg catapults it over the top. Every bite a decadent American delight. Add a frosty Wartsteiner on tap & revel in the joy. Bar vibe excellent. Staff friendly. Competent and timely service. Just don't overcrowd my little corner of the bar when I'm looking for my perch. The funny thing is, as great as the burger is, it's not even the best thing on the menu. SBT is a hidden secret door to great food. You're welcome. read more

Not a bad place but the bar gets busy on Thursday and Friday early evenings....and loud, very loud. The tables in the back are on top of each other so you get to meet new people. :) The food is ok. I ordered the fish special which was halibut, and was then given sea bass and not told why. That wasn't great. It was flavorful but not very hot (actually none of the food served was hot). You won't get very large portion sizes either. The flat bread was pepperoni and mozzarella. That was unmemorable but fine I suppose. For the cost, this place wasn't ideal and I won't be back but it's close to the LIRR, and has good beer options. There's also a nice bakery across the street. read more

This place is good if you and your entire family are terrible cooks. Otherwise, this is beyond mediocre. We walked in and got seated straight away, but there were only 2 people working there. We ordered two burgers, one medium one medium rare, and a pork chop. After waiting literally 1 hour with no check in while watching the 2 people working there chatting and laughing behind the bar, we asked when our food would be done. Our food was done when they checked the back - who knows how long it was sitting there. Burgers were average and super messy. Both came out rare. Pork chop was meant to have "peach salsa" which was quite literally an underripe peach cubed with a tiny bit of pure peach juice. To top of off, they must think their food is good enough to not offer sides, so we paid extra for the broccoli which tasted like it was covered in siracha mayo. Will not return. read more

We arrived around 7:30 on a Friday night. There were already two couples ahead of us and we doubted we would be waiting less than an hour. But the manager told us 20 minutes and we were seated in about 10. The restaurant is a bit tight and reminded me of our days in Manhattan. The servers are bouncing table to table, somehow managing not to collide with the patron-filled chairs jutting out into the main walkway. I don't believe they take reservations, but I saw how quickly they would turn over tables once customers left, explaining our quick seating. For cocktails we had an Air Mail and Maple syrup Old Fashioned, tasty enough. What stood out for us was the food. My Spanish octopus was perfect, complimented by the feta and what I think were Gigante beans and a jazzed up sofrito. My husband had the Steak and quite enjoyed it. Highly recommend the fried green tomatoes and the wok fired spinach. I have no idea what they did with spinach, shallots, & mushrooms, but it shines. The noise fluctuated a bit, as quieter patrons left and louder ones replaced them, but nothing outrageous for a Friday night. I saw well-behaved kids there. Would not bring kids who need to wander. Again, reminded me of a West Village restaurant. Look forward to returning here and trying the rest of the menu. read more

Food was okay; mediocre at best. The fish tacos were surprisingly well seasoned. The street corn needed some salt. The grilled octopus was grilled well but overly acidic due to the sauce. Plus, it was a small portion for a main versus other mains I've had from other restaurants I had a spicy margarita with no hint of spice The staff was cordial but you can tell we were not wanted there. Our server barely checked in on us. One of the servers even made a recommendation to my husband for chicken then laughed it off with a fellow employee. Needless to say, we won't be back. Schout Bay Tavern was a pleasant surprise! How great to know that such good American food exists right around the corner from my house. The service was sophisticated and made me feel like I was in the city. Atmosphere was cool. It's dark, spacious, and has both tables and bar stools. It's a bar for older people though, so don't expect it to be poppin with 20-somethings. Lots of cougars! We ordered the fish tacos and the Aussie lamb skewers. Everything were great. The fish tacos were just small filet of fried fish (cod, I think), and didn't have much more in them besides that, but left me satisfied. The lamb skewers were lovely. Okay, gang..,my wife and I have been searching for a quality burger on the north shore of Ling Island for eons. Sometimes we find good quality, only to be disappointed by the fact that ordering med-rare or medium only gets us a well-done burger. Our search is over! SBT, as Schout Bay Tavern is known 'round these parts, is everything we've been looking for. First, the quality of the beef is spot on, but the difference does not end there. Perfectly cooked, and generously portioned, with a house sauce that is wonderful, and perfectly crisp smoked bacon, and thinly sliced raw onion, shredded green leaf lettuce and the piece de resistance, genius!--a slice of yellow pickled tomato, all served on a buttery brioche bun. The fries are nicely salted, crisp on the outside and superbly pillowy inside. They don't accompany the burger as is the case with many other pubs and restaurants but somehow you don't mind the $7.50 extra fare for them. I don't know whether they're fried in duck fat or beef tallow but they do have the distinct flavor and depth that either of those two fats would normally impart. A single order is far more than one diner can probably finish. In fact, two of us shared a single order and left at least 3/4 of them untouched. The small amount that we did consume was sublimely satisfying, and anyway, we're laying off the carbs these days for the most part. The bar seems most friendly and chocked full of regulars, so it's certainly a tavern one would want to frequent, with two large screen TVs and the obligatory 'game' to watch. Service is beyond affable and extremely efficient, and the booth-like seating is tres comfortable. Incidentally, there is a brief but full menu, which sounds inviting, as well as specials but I cannot possibly review SBT on the basis of their other entrees and sides because, as this critique suggests, we were here for the burgers. Don't simply amble over to SBT when you're Jonesing for a burger. Instead, put pedal to the metal and run! I promise you will not be disappointed. Go. Why are you just sitting there? Go... Came here recently for dinner on a Friday night. We didn't make reservations so we had to wait about 30 minutes to get a seated. You can grab a drink while you wait but there's not much room to stand and wait. The bar was packed so we just stood by the entrance. We got seated at one of the booths across from the bar which was nice and roomy. The staff is very efficient here. They brought our water and menus over immediately after we got seated. We had looked over the menu while we were waiting so we were ready to order. Our drinks took less than 5 minutes to arrive which was nice. My husband and I decided to share the burger, duck confit tacos, pei mussels and fries. The burger was pretty good, cooked well and was flavorful. The duck confit tacos were a good choice too. They came with 3 and had a good amount of duck meat I in each taco. My husband liked the mussels but I thought the sauce had too much wine flavor in it. Also it didn't come with bread to dip in the sauce. Overall this place was pretty good. This might be a local spot because everyone seemed to know each other. read more

Schout Bay Tavern is one of the best restaurants in Manhasset. They have wonderful food and the employees are just great people. Adam is one of the best bartenders, Patrick is one of the best servers, Kristina and Max are awesome. I didn't mention everyone but they are all wonderful to spend time with while enjoying a delicious meal. Pete, the manager, is a good man. The best thing about this restaurant is their food options. Yes, you have to order a burger and then order fries on the side so it's more on the expensive side but that doesn't matter because everything is so delicious. Their vegetable dishes are phenomenal and my mother loves their fish dishes. I always love the steak dishes and their burger is top notch on Plandome Road. They change their menu seasonally. Everything is fresh. The chef is cool and gets the job done, as he should. Another good man. I go to this restaurant at least once a week and will continue to do that for the foreseeable future. I had high hopes, but was so disappointed. We ordered 3 appetizers: BBQ Ribs, Duck Tacos, and the Daily Flat Bread Pizza. Both the ribs and the duck meat tasted like they were reheated from 3 days ago. The flat bread was small. You could have hidden it under a sheet of paper. It was about as thin as well. We ordered the SBT Burger and a side of the Rice and Beans: the burger was great. Exactly how I make it at home. Big, juicy, and nicely cooked. It doesn't come with fries or anything. The rice and beans was supposed to have Andouille sausage in it. I have added a picture of the insulting lack of sausage that was in the dish. What a joke! It wasn't a good dish anyway. We ordered a beer, wine, and martini: the Brooklyn craft Pilsner was $8. The Napa Sauvignon Blanc was $14!!! The martini was $10. My wife asked if they could make an espresso martini. My dad and I came here for dinner one Friday. They were able to accommodate us although we didn't have a reservation. We were seated in the back, the decor was very interesting and I liked it. Where we were seated there was a direct blow of cold air which was annoying during our dinner. Our waitress came to take our order, she was very nice and bubbly. We started with the tuna carpaccio special, which was very good but more of a tartare then a carpaccio. The tuna tasted very fresh. My dad and I shared the swordfish special and the lamb for our entree. The swordfish was cooked well and the flavors of the dish were mellow but it worked. The lamb was very good, it was not chewy at all and the olives in the salad underneath it were a nice addition. We also got the kung pao broccoli as a side. It was okay, I would've liked it better if the peanut flavor was more pronounced. After that we were finished. Overall I really enjoyed this restaurant! The food is phenomenal (as evidenced by their Top 100 Restaurants on Long Island award), the staff is friendly & excellent, and the prices are reasonable. There's not a single "racist" bone in that place. This is Manhasset. But it's a small boutique restaurant. Hey, I can drink heavily with the best of them - I've lived in both New Orleans and San Antonio. But if you have a group of 9 boisterous drinkers carrying on like it's Mardi Gras on a quiet Friday night when couples are trying to have a nice quiet date night, you're obviously going to be politely asked to keep it down so that people can enjoy their meals. This isn't a TGI Fridays on a football game night. So, playing the race card about that is ludicrous. This is casual fine dining. If you're looking for a loud bar with buffalo wings, maybe choose another establishment? I know that server (who is also a 5 star dessert chef) and I also know her sister - for YEARS. And asking customers to be responsible drinkers and respectful of other patrons in a small, quaint, upscale restaurant is certainly not racist. It's appropriate. Casting aspersions about a local business like this is completely reprehensible. They all work their butts off to serve EVERYBODY, maintain a beautiful ambiance, and create amazing culinary delights that I normally don't encounter outside of expensive NYC restaurants. Playing the race card when being politely and quietly admonished for being MUCH too loud in a small, date-type restaurant is both unfair and hurts a really wonderful new small business that only obtains more and more accolades as they grow organically to a fantastic, "diamond in the rough" restaurant. I personally GUARANTEE that the food and service at this location is superb. But if you're just looking for a rowdy bar to carry on at, join me at Lennon's Pub in Port Washington, as opposed to labeling an up and coming small business "racist". BEWARE: Racist and downright RUDE behavior from staff. Long story short: STAY AWAY from this place unless you enjoy being served with an attitude. Our diverse group came to this location last night (January 17, 2018) for an office happy hour. For a Wednesday night, the place was packed and people were enjoying their drinks and food all across the establishment. We were enjoying the evening as well, until the waitress (a young woman) approached four of us (out of our much larger group) to ask us to "quiet down." She said she's been "getting complaints" about our group and how "loud" we were. Keep in mind, this is a BAR that was absolutely PACKED. Why did she single our table out? We are professionals at a large academic medical center in the area and we all know how to behave in a public setting. We come from all corners of this world, and we all agreed that none of us had ever been approached for being unruly in a public space. This begs the question, why us? Why did the waitress single out the only black woman in our group and tell her to quiet down? Why not make an announcement at the head of the table? Why single out the four of us, with there being only one white individual in the group? You never truly know what is in someone's heart, but we all walked away feeling that we were singled out - in a restaurant full of white people - wrongly. This waitress unfortunately did not stop there, and her astoundingly bad attitude continued when we (had the *nerve*) to pay with three different credit cards. She did not say thank you or good night; she did not acknowledge the hundreds of dollars we spent in this place at all. It was absolutely embarrassing how bad this service was. I've had the pleasure of dining out in fine establishments all over the world. Unfortunately, Schout Bay, in my own backyard, is a place that I felt unwelcome at. As a resident of the Gold Coast, I am acutely aware of the lack of diversity in our area. It saddens me that an office happy hour is another reflection of that lack of diversity. I will not be back, and I do not think my colleagues will return either. We will be sure to share this story with the rest of our colleagues across the Health System that we are employed at. I would never want another group of diverse, talented and intelligent people to be treated this way again. read more

Came here to celebrate a birthday dinner - 4 guests in our party. Same day reservations only, but that wasn't an issue since we arrived 7pm on a Saturday and there was no one in the restaurant. Staff was wearing masks, so safety precautions were taken. Service was sub-par, nothing to rave about nor complain. Just a bit lacking. The specials were read to us and drinks brought out, but no follow up on refills, even the alcoholic beverages, so we had to ask ourselves for a refill of coffee/water, which seems somewhat a common courtesy when in a restaurant to me. Food was good - portions average, not too big or small. We had the flatbread for an appetizer and that was relatively small, mini pieces, 6 in total so I don't think it's worth it to nor should be deemed an appetizer. If so, make it larger since appetizers are meant to be shared. Menu was a simple selection, which made it easy to make a choice, however it's a la carte so you need to add a side if you want anything in addition to whatever you order, which wasn't that appealing to me. $19 for Salmon - with no side? I'll pass on adding anything - same thing with steak, etc. so you have to add anything on. Quality of food was 3.5 - we had the lobster roll, ahi tuna tacos, soup of the day, mussels, mac & chz, steak and the flatbread of the day - all average....however it did take 45 mins for us to get our food, which seemed like a while since we were the only people in the place. I also noticed a party came after us - 3 people and they got their food before us. No one came to check in on how we liked our food, which once again was a turn-off to me. At least ask how everything tastes or if we needed anything. There were 2 serves and 1 gentleman working - the guy seemed to care a bit more than the 2 girls who were on their phones the whole time, perhaps why we were never asked how anything was, etc. Just had higher hopes for this place. read more

Schout Bay Tavern is a fancy-pants, new-age, ambitious, restaurant and bar. To be completely honest; I'm not crazy about it. The food and drinks, however, were quite good and so I cannot in good faith give them a poor review. Damn you, moral compass and sense of culinary justice! Anyways, I'll give you fine Yelp folks the long and short of what I did and didn't like. THE GOOD: The food is really great. The menu is diverse and clearly well-inspired. All of the options offer great flavor combinations and fresh takes on old classics (see: my photos). We all found ourselves equally attracted to several items on the menu and when that's the hardest choice you have to make at a restaurant, you're usually in a good spot. Besides that, the drinks are good and plenty. The place itself, including the bathroom, was very clean and the service was friendly, swift, and attentive. THE OPINION: First off, the prices are just too high for what i'm looking to pay when I hit up a "Tavern." Most of the items on the menu are a-la-carte; also known as, you buy your sides separately; also known as, when you order the burger you just get the burger--no chips or fries or anything. Now, the burger I ordered was, with the egg on top, $15. But I just get the burger and the egg at that price. If I want fries with that, I've got to spend another $7 for the fries. So we're talking at least $22 for a burger and fries. We haven't gotten to the obligatory drinks, tax, and tips yet. At the end of the day we're looking at some $40 for just myself. And that's too much for me when I hit the Tavern for lunch. Do I feel like the food was worth it and the place was nice? Yes. But I wasn't looking for inspired dishes, square plates, tuscan eggs, ahi tuna, modern-industrial decor, and a menu devoid of capital letters! On a Friday night with my Wife? Maybe. But not on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. I just wanted to throw back beers and burgers in a warm and homey environment with minimal harm to my finances! Schout Bay is so modern and trendy and rich-hipster...it's just not my kind of Tavern. I can hear you all now: "But Jordan, you said the food was great." "But Jordan, you gave it 4 stars." But Jordan, the place was clean and the staff was nice." I KNOW THAT OK. SHUT UP. I GAVE IT 4 STARS, DIDN'T I?! Internal crisis aside, I came here because it was called a Tavern, and I felt it deviated a bit too far from my definition of that word. The sub-definition of "Tavern" on Dictionary.com is "a public house for travelers and others; inn." None of that feel made it over to Schout Bay. When I think "Tavern" (and I've been to a hefty amount of them across the USA, UK, Netherlands, Germany, etc.) I'm thinking decent food with more than decent portions, huge ice cold drafts that wont make my wallet cry if I order 4 of them, a dim and rustic interior decor that welcomes you to kick back with your feet up after Battlefield: Life, and Gandalf manning the bar imparting me his sage wisdom. Now, I realize this is stupid, but the environment of this place just didn't do it for me. It felt more like an upscale-ish restaurant than a Tavern. The decor is extremely modern, minimalist, and sterile. The place itself felt reserved, and polite? Can polite be negative? I don't know. It just felt stuffy to me. It didn't give me that rest-for-the-weary-traveler vibe that I'm hoping for when I set foot in a Tavern. Whatever. You get what I'm saying here. We've come here four times in the last month. SBT distinguishes itself as a gastropub. We've tried a number of different items from the menu and have been happy with each selection. Personally, I think that the burger is as good as any that I've had anywhere else. The place can get crowded on Friday or Saturday night so give yourself some time because SBT doesn't take reservations. The staff is also very friendly and welcoming. We'll be back again soon! Excellent gastropub in a town that is really very lucky to have it. Charming decor on the inside of this bar/restaurant. The entire front area feels like a bar with a small area in the back has more of a dining room feel however it's just as loud as the front. Creative menu that gives this place a unique vibe. They have wonderful tomato soup that comes with melted cheese over the top. Delicious and fresh burrito bruschetta, really tender Cornish chicken and excellent sides. The Mac and Cheese could maybe use more of and thicker pieces of pork belly in here. It was almost hard to taste the pieces of pork were so small. The broccoli & sweet potato mash were both excellent. I'm gonna cut right to the chase here. This place isn't really that great. Was really hoping to love it cause of the branding, menu, and the nod to old Manhasset but our experience here fell reaaaaaal short. Came here for brunch (only on Sundays!) and initially, it seemed promising. I ordered the stuffed french toast, while my two other friends got (I think) huevos rancheros. First off, please never plate a tortilla on top of warm (STEAMY) black beans, then pile other (STEAMY) shit on top of said tortilla. If you do, please at least crisp the tortilla up in a skillet or in the oven so that the tortilla can withstand some of the steam of the black beans. Unless the intention was to have the customer just eat a really soggy tortilla in a swamp of black beans with eggs? Just really bad and poor plating that honestly ruined the huevos for us. My stuffed french toast was super soggy, as if it barely had any time in a pan to caramelize and get that nice crispness. I'm reluctant to come back to try dinner service since brunch was pretty awful but it's gotta be a bit better since I keep scrolling past rave reviews, right? Someday, maybe. read more

One of the top restaurants on Long Island. Great environment and feels at Schout Bay. Brunch, dinner or just drinks, this is my go to spot. My favorite way to start dinner is the Kale Salad with a fried egg. Delicious! Their SBT Burger is second to none, and by far my favorite. A must try! Brussel sprouts, acorn squash rings, Mac and Cheese and the White bean salad are all amazing! Their specials are always on point too! Had an amazing piece of swordfish with tomato basil salad this past Saturday. Last but not least, the owner is very welcoming and a great guy! You must try Schout Bay! read more

Great local spot for a delicious bite to eat or drink. Owner is friendly. Staff great. Menu creative and food prepared with care. Ambiance & decor is crisp, clean, & up to date yet reflecting a respect for the long time tradition the town of Manhasset holds. Bar is comfortable with great tv's, people are warm all around & smiling. There is a welcoming feel. Sunday brunch is great. My kids enjoy it too which is always a bonus ! read more

Likely one of the few actual restaurants on Manhasset's main drag and actually quite delicious. Duck tacos were well seasoned. Their mac and cheese is made with real ingredients, meaning real cheese, real cream, etc. The kung pao broccoli was actually broccoli rabe but tasted right out of an Asian market. The toasted sishito peppers were seasonal and on point (though I would have expected a roasted red pepper sauce to go with it. House fries are Cajun seasoned. Burgers were cooked exactly as ordered and are quite possibly the best in town. We ordered a bottle of the Rioja to go with the meal which was decently priced and full bodied enough to stand up to this meal. For dessert we had the banana pudding which was wonderful, a great texture and not over the top with ingredients it didn't need. Coffee was okay, better than most places. As for service, the kitchen was surprisingly slow. We seemed to sit down just as a bunch of families with young children arrived so I gather they prioritized those tables ahead of us (especially since we told them we didn't mind the wait). Our waitress Zena was very friendly and helpful as well as attentive. All in all, we'll be back! read more
