Peter's Inn is one of those places that you just might walk right by if you don't already know about it, or at least the owners would like to keep it that way. It's small, just a few tables outside on the sidewalk, a few more inside next to a bar that will hold a dozen maybe, and then an even smaller room near the back with a couple more tables. Needless to say, this place ain't where you bring your 21st birthday party. On busy nights, and that's most nights, it's crowded and service can be hard to come by, but the staff is, for the most part, very helpful and friendly. Peter's is the kind of restaurant that may have reached its capacity, but adding one square foot of space to it would probably ruin the vibe they've created. Bartender Colby, no relation to the cheese, is a bit of a conundrum, she's a good bartender (turned me on to a wonderful tequila when they didn't have my first choice), but doesn't suffer small talk with her customers or anyone from what I could tell. The physical plant is old school kitsch; sail fish strung with Christmas lights on the wall, hand written chalkboard menu that isn't always easy to read, rich woody, dark interior and lots of little art pieces jammed in where they can fit. They might as well just have a "locals only" sign on the door, cuz the local support is more than enough to keep the whole staff running on most nights. Come on down if you want, and I do recommend it if even for just drinks, just know that you're coming to Peter's party and not the other way round. read more

My favorite place in Baltimore. This was my first time back since they reopened. Great that they're now taking reservations for Friday/Saturday nights, as the long waits (or early meals) were my main reason for not coming more often. I split the trout pate with my family - delicious, and whimsically presented. I just had the french onion soup with short rib, rather than a full main course, but it was probably the best french onion I've ever had - rich and deeply savory. Service was perfect. I was very impressed. I came as a single person on a weekday night, and was seated immediately. The bartenders were engaging and friendly but not invasive. The food was outstanding on all counts. Details: Attaboy: Nice ginger/rum flavored cocktail with a prosecco topper. Well mixed, tasty, perfectly balanced. Beef short rib: Beautifully tender and full of flavor. Served with a fantastic and robust beef broth that only augmented the flavor. Topped off with lovely raclette toast to soak up all that broth. I savored every drop. Garlic bread: A single thick slice of baguette topped with garlic butter paste. Delicious, but not for the faint of heart; only get this if you really love garlic (and I do!). I wrote a perfectly lovely review that the app somehow lost. I will try again... We were on our way to Darbar, but took a detour across the street and decided to stay. Outdoors, on a great evening to be outdoors. The waiter lit a tealight that lasted a while. Kind of romantic. We had lobster risotto and petite filet with asparagus and scalloped potatoes. He the former, I the latter, and we switched at the halfway point. Everything was well-seasoned and perfectly-sized: delicious, and not too little or too much. I had a (overpoured) glass of some kind of white and he had an Oregon red. We tasted each. I am a lightweight, so I was quite toasted as we settled up and walked...home? His home, really, but I want to say it's starting to feel like our home? Sounds strange to my ears, but we're not quite there yet. At any rate, it was expensive, but worth every penny. The fancy red door of Peter's Inn drew me right in. This place is TINY; a row home turned into a restaurant with a big wooden bar and a handful of tables. This is definitely a locals spot and folks pile in. The staff is not showy. If anything they are kind of relaxed and laid back. I can't say this is a whole in the wall; the moment you open that door there is a ton of hustle and bustle. Even after 20 years, they don't take reservations; its first come, first seated. Or, you can send a friend over ahead of time to enjoy a few Manhattans and put your group's name on the list. Peter's Inn is not as fancy as the white table clothes would have you to believe. The silverware and napkins are handed out in those paper popcorn bags. It's obvious that the menu changes regularly, because it is hand written and then photocopied. No printed menu's here. It actually confused me a little; I found it hard to distinguish between descriptions of items vs entirely different items. And there isn't any separation between small plates or large entrées - well except the price :-). We shared a few apps to start. Our service was a little rocky. It took a while to order drinks and food and they were consistently out of the few wines we wanted. Everyone got a slice of garlic bread - worth it - huge, thick slices of bread slathered in garlic and herbs. It was definitely rich: salty, savory, buttery, and exactly what we all needed. Turns out they give you a bite of this if you check in on Facebook! Winner. Next, was a rillette and some toast points. As if the garlic bread wasn't enough - why not add a bowl of seasoned animal fat to the table. The creamy, meaty spread coated your mouth and definitely set up my palate for more. I would have liked to see this paired with a little more than just bread - maybe some cornichons or pickled shallots. Something to cut the fat and offer you a reason for a second bite. This was tasty, but seriously a bite or two will do it. Make sure you have a table full of folks if you plan on finishing this. The burrata was definitely the star of the app order. There were some spiced beans and tomatoes on toast with the creamy cheese. Finally, a balanced dish to come out of the kitchen. The cheese was velvety and the crunchy bread offered a nice texture complement. The spice of the toasts - maybe Harissa or cumin - made for a taste bud pick me up. We had some salads that were not memorable or even worth discussing - so I'll stop at that. The entrées were gorgeous! I had the scallops over black lentils. The black lentils seem to be hitting the food scene hard - maybe because they add intrigue to the plate with that luxurious and glistening look of caviar. I like a little sear on my scallops - there is something about that brown scorchy-ness that offers the slightest texture component and a little extra caramelization for something sweet. But, I'll take a properly cooked scallop without a sear over an overcooked rubbery one every day. I liked the lentils, but more for the look than the taste. I was hoping there would be something to bring the flavors all together. I definitely had some order envy over this tuna dish. Seared rare tuna over a bed of salad greens. So, I've always loved Peter's Inn. It's a cool restaurant, that always delivers amazing food. My business that I own, is being acquired by a company in Amsterdam and they flew over to Baltimore for meetings. I have three nights to host them at different bars and restaurants, and Peter's was one of my top choices. I called ahead, the staff were great and I was very excited for our dinner there this evening. Everything was fantastic until the end. The clients are European...where tipping is very different in terms of percentages. They left a 15% tip, because that is above standard for them in Amsterdam and felt they had good service. The extremely rude waiter with glasses then made a comment about how they needed the table, and how they would have let us sit there if not for the 15% tip. He said "If it would have been 20% we would have left you sit here, we need the table." HOW INCREDIBLY RUDE. I have worked in hospitality for 15 years and have NEVER had someone be so rude. This was so incredibly embarrassing for me as I am hosting these people from overseas. THEY DID NOT KNOW BETTER. And...EVEN IF THEY DID, That comment was so incredibly inappropriate. The worst part, and my clients made this apparent, was that there were LOTS of open tables available. So, this was just a way to SHAME us. I can't remember a time where I have been more upset with the comments made by a staff member at a restaurant. You have embarrassed me as a client with my business, as I was proud to showcase your restaurant to these people. Now, they have had a negative experience at their first Baltimore location. If I had known their tip, I would have slipped the waiter cash to makeup for the difference since again, THEY DID NOT KNOW. Now, I have no reason to visit your restaurant again, as you have really put me in a terrible spot as a loyal and happy customer. read more

Don't let the three star review put you off. This is a great little place to grab a drink and a bite it just isn't what I would consider excellent all things considered. As anticipated there was a wait when we arrived. This was our first time there and we instantly liked the atmosphere especially when the bartender greeted us as soon as we walked in. It is a very small space and there isn't a ton of room to wait for a table. Basically, you have to choose whose way you want to get in. We chose to stand in front of the men's bathroom to stay out of the way of the busy servers. We quickly grabbed a drink and soon, a space at the bar opened up where we waited another ten minutes or so before we were seated. Unfortunately, that was were the friendly and attentive service ended. Literally as soon as we sat down - like as soon as we were in our chairs taking off our jackets, the waitress came over and asked us if we were ready to order. The menus were still piled in the center of the table and we were missing a member of our party. Plus, she was a bit terse. This exchange would not have been a huge issue except that it happened once more before the other member of our party arrived and then as soon as he sat down. On the fourth visit, we were able to order. The table got jalapeno clams, buratta with roasted tomatoes, lamb shank, the scallops, risotto milanese, and the duck breast. The clams were definitely one of the stars of the meal. They were spicy and well cooked. Of the other dishes I tried, the duck was good but not properly rendered so the fattiness was a bit off putting. The cherry sauce and the polenta were a very nice compliment however. The risotto was super, super salty. One of my dining mates made a great point that it had probably been reducing throughout dinner service. It was really too bad as the texture and execution of the risotto itself was really done quite well. My dining companions with the lamb and the scallops seemed happy and enjoyed their meals. One of the key things I think that is worth mentioning is that the portion and the prices are very fair in my opinion. I am not sure what the other yelpers saw issue with as the portions were very standard for a nicer restaurant. If you are looking for TGIFriday type plates of food for $10, this isn't the place for you. The other element worth mentioning was that the server was really unnecessarily unpleasant. I am fine with efficiency and I don't need a server that is particularly chatty but I do like to feel like a welcomed guest and with the warm greeting when we arrived and the two checks on us by the manager, I would have expected a much better attitude from our server. read more

Garlic explosion! Don't get the salad or bread if you can't handle it (or if you're gonna be kissing later-- wink wink!) I had an excellent dining experience here and awesome service when I came in a group of six for a birthday, though (full disclosure) some of the people I was with are friends with the waitstaff here. Generally, I would not recommend coming with a large party. The scallops were definitely the high point of the night (though others enjoyed the tuna wontons, pork leg, and shrimp and grits thoroughly.) Wine and cocktails are pricey, but those bar tenders don't mess around. They know what they're doing. Can't wait to go back to try more. This is not the worst restaurant I've ever been to. It is probably the worst restaurant I've ever been to where I've paid such a premium for food. I'm really only writing this review because there have been so many good reviews - yet among myself and the people I know who have been here - the experience went something like this: Umm...I paid this, for THIS? The first time I came here, I felt the food was over priced and incredibly average. But I decided I had gotten the wrong thing, and wanted to give it another try. The warm, cozy, crowded atmosphere reminded me of restaurants I loved in NYC, - and I wanted to like it. Came here for the 2nd time with my boyfriend about a month ago. We sat at the bar, and yes, it was full, but even giving some slack for that factor - the service was very so-so. Took about 10-15 minutes to get another glass of wine - and again, I was at the bar. They hadn't bothered to fix their front door, which didn't close properly. Every single time someone left or entered, the door was left ajar, as it did not close on its own. Provided it hadn't been an extremely cold night, this might not have mattered - but it was. The patrons sitting at the table closest to the door, and I (sitting at the end of the bar, closest to the door), kept taking turns getting up and forcefully shutting the door. Finally, the food. My boyfriend ordered the $26 scallops with asparagus and some kind of puree (can't remember, maybe parsnip). I ordered the $18 beef ragu. My boyfriend received 4 small asparagus spears, on top of (literally) a dollop of puree, and 4 medium-sized scallops. The food was ok - but the serving size was ridiculous. It was a cliche. Honestly, it would have been an appetizer at any other restaurant, and for less than the price of an entree. As for my Ragu - it was under seasoned and the noodles were as cheap as you can get (egg noodles). I am not exaggerating when I say that I was highly suspicious it was actually a hamburger helper meal. Don't get me wrong, hamburger helper isn't terrible. However, I do not need to find parking in Fells on a Friday night, and pay a 900% premium to eat hamburger helper. I give it a star for atmosphere (plus Yelp requires it) - in every thing else, it was lacking. If the food quality matched its price, I would've given Peter's Inn 3 stars. Wow, I was blown away by the fried oysters over greens with mushrooms and a bacon vinaigrette. It was delicious. I tried a bite of each of my friends meals and they were both equally amazing (steak cooked to perfection with hints of butter and duck leg over some type of well flavored beans). Get an order of garlic bread it's soooo good, but be warned the garlic my linger on your breath for a day. I'm pretty sure we had food-gasams while sitting at the bar, but we definitely were in a food-coma by the time we left. Absolutely amazing. Glad we arrived there 20 minutes before the kitchen opened (You'll know it's open when the light is on) which was perfect because we enjoyed looking over the menu which changes weekly, conversation about how amazing everything on the menu sounds, and our drinks, oh and lets not forget a long wait for a table in the cold. As soon as the kitchen opened the place was packed and a 45 minute wait was on for those who arrived too late. I am pretty sure they do not take reservations, first come first serve and if you get out of line oh well you missed your chance. The inside of Peter's Inn is cozy and yet romantic but has random decor scattered around that will make you laugh or question it. Make sure you visit the restroom (if your a lady) to check out the art on the walls and the well stocked various personal goodies one might need in case of emergencies. I appreciate establishments that care about their customers. You can read about the history of Peter's Inn on one of the menus (I think the wine list) it's pretty interesting. If you are going in a group make sure it is a small group. I'd say 4 to 5 people tops, since it is a small establishment and once it's full people are bumping into you to get around the place. Very very disappointed in this place. I had done a lot of yelping and review reading to find somewhere new to go for when my dad came to town. We settled upon Peters Inn. The place gets 5 stars for the atmosphere, but 1-2 for everything else. The restaurant is very small and the place was packed. We got a table no problem and sat down. The hand written menu is tough to read as we needed clarification on what certain menu items were, not because we hadn't heard of it, but more because we couldn't make out what certain letters and words were. It took a while for the waitress to come to our table, and when she did, she took our order. My girlfriend wasn't sure about which wine she liked, so she let her sample the two she was debating. The waitress recommended the garlic bread as "it's a staple of theirs." We ordered two house salads with garlic bread. After 20+ minutes we still didn't have the salad, which was lettuce with balsamic dressing and a piece of garlic bread. I asked the waitress and she had a big attitude and resounded "we're busy and it's coming." It took an additional 10 minutes to get our salads. The salad was drenched in balsamic dressing and I couldn't eat it. I ordered the ribeye steak which was good, my girlfriend got a cheese plate, and my dad ordered the venison. The entrees were average. Let's just say that due to my experience with the service , I'm in 0 rush to go back. read more

Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Scratch that...it's absolutely one of my favorite restaurants, period. First off, I love that it's a tiny little hole in the wall, off the beaten path, that you obviously have to be a local to know about. Second, the food here is absolutely delicious, and very reasonably priced for what you get. In New York, you could charge twice as much for this food, and it would still be worth it. The menu changes on a weekly basis, though the steak & salad are always a staple. Third, Karin & Bud are great people. They really do seem to love running this place, and they seem to genuinely enjoy making a connection with the customers. Fourth, I absolutely love the space as well. It's tiny and feels like you're having dinner in someone's living room. Some of the artwork is from local photographer Sam Holden. Fifth, the rest of the staff are incredibly warm, friendly & inviting as well. I just can't say enough good things about this place. We read a lot of good reviews and heard through the grapevine that this was a really great place to go, but we ended up being unimpressed. One good thing I can say is that the atmosphere is tops. I love the way the restaurant looks. It's a funky, tiny former dive bar, and it just makes you smile to look around. I would come back for a drink here simply because it's a good looking place. There weren't many tables, but we were seated immediately. My first issue was with the menu itself. It was a handwritten sheet of paper. There was no organization to it, so I was unsure what was an appetizer and what was an entree. Now I assumed that anything $12 or less was an appetizer, but still. Customers shouldn't have to work so hard. Even if they change their menus frequently, at least print it out. The handwriting also caused a problem for my boyfriend. He thought the listing said, "Roasted BEEF Risotto with Goat Cheese," but it actually said "Roasted BEET..." The T looked like an F. So when he was corrected, he had figure out all over again what he wanted. The waitress immediately recommended that we order the garlic bread. Not wanting to miss out on any greens, my boyfriend and I ordered the garlic bread with a side salad (greens and balsamic vinaigrette). 10 minutes passed, 20 minutes passed, and still no bread and salads. When my boyfriend asked on the status, we got, "You know, the restaurant is really full right now and the kitchen is busy." Talk about an attitude. We did get some peanuts, but that wasn't what we were waiting for. When we finally got our orders, and the garlic bread was very good. The salad, however, was inedible. They must have emptied an entire jar of dressing on it because neither my boyfriend nor I could eat ours. We notified the waitress that the salad was far too overdressed, she apologized and took it away, and then did nothing else. They even charged us for it at the end of the night, which I think was very wrong. Dinner was fine. I ordered the burrata cheese platter, and it was tasty. I wish the cheese had, had a stronger flavor because it was extremely mild, therefore making it a bit uninteresting. I have seen dishes like these a thousand times before. My boyfriend and his Dad both ordered meat, and they said it was average. One thing I can rave about is the grits side. THAT was delicious. Overall, I was disappointed. I didn't appreciate the attitude of the server at all, which always has an impact on your experience. Ideally, I'd like to get the garlic bread for free considering the 1.5 hour wait for the table. How is this place that popular? Rockfish was served with a lobster, potato, bacon, "hash" - large pieces of undercooked potato, chewy off tasting lobster, and no bacon to be seen. The fish itself was in the neighborhood of 4 oz and obviously overcooked. Other dishes like the duck leg fared better, but were still small to the point of dissatisfaction. 1 star for the garlic bread, the other for the artwork in the can. read more

I think Peter's is probably the best neighborhood restaurant in Baltimore. The menu changes weekly, but the steak is always on the menu, as well as their signature salad and garlic bread. I usually come here when I am in the mood for a great steak. It's inexpensive, the portion is huge, the atmosphere is friendly and fun, and the food always tastes like what you would make at home, only better. Great, unpretentious joint. Warning: they do not take reservations and it's a small restaurant, so it fills up fast. I've waited over an hour for a table in the middle of the week. I absolutely love this place. It's a little away from the center of Fells Point. The decor in there is very quaint like an old English bar. But the food there is fantastic! We had the cheddar cheese grit that makes you want seconds. I had the salmon there (their menu changes weekly), and it was pretty darn good. The portion size was perfect. My wife and I live down the street from this place and I read lots of good reviews, so we made reservations for our anniversary dinner. BIG mistake. Although there was empty seating outside, they refused to allow us a table, which I asked for because sitting inside is so LOUD that I couldn't hear my wife across the table. Maybe some people like that, but it's not what we had in mind. But if the food and service were as good as advertised I could live with it. They weren't. The food was only ok - nothing special and small portions (neither of us are huge people or big eaters). We asked if we could order something additional from the menu and the server told us that wasn't allowed and it would take at least another hour if the chef relented. We ordered raw oysters and the came with no explanation about origin, etc., which you expect at a fine dining establishment. We went home unhappy and still hungry. Came back again, and was pleasantly surprised! Came around 6:30 on a Thursday evening and it was surprisingly empty -- I was able to find a seat at the bar without a problem and many of the tables were empty. Sitting at the bar was fun because we could watch them make our drinks and we kept eyeing the spread of fruit used for their drinks! They make their drinks strong! I got the vodka and kiwi + muddled blueberries and I think I might have preferred a bit more fruit to hide the taste of the vodka (I'm not a big vodka drinker...). My boyfriend ordered an old fashioned and they don't add any soda water to it! It's just pure whiskey! The food here takes a while to get to you, but I didn't mind, because I was nursing my drink and chatting with the bartender. Food: - Burrata + avocado: I do love their burrata, but maybe burrata + avocado toast is overkill? I think that I would have preferred the burrata with the harissa and plain bread, so I can taste more of the burrata. It was a bit overwhelming in both texture and taste with both burrata and avocado. - Lamb chop: delicious! Not gamey at all. The lamb was cooked to just the right tenderness. The cherry reduction was a nice touch. - NY Strip: also delicious! It had the perfect crust on the outside, yet was tender and still a little bit rare on the inside! Nicely marbled and oh so tender. Long beans aren't really my thing, but I did like that they were still crispy, not cooked down until they were mushy. - Pot du creme and mint chip gelato: omg, so good! Came here on a recommend from a friend and LOVED IT. We came on a Thursday night and it was pretty busy. There wasn't a wait for dinner but the entire bar was full and most tables were taken. It's a cute place, VERY small and close, but to me, a typical Baltimore-bar: a mix of people from all backgrounds and ages. Before eating here I would suggest looking at the menu online or signing up for the newsletter as it changes weekly. Food was also reasonably priced. We each had a drink and then split the cheese grits and shrimp cocktail. Then, my boyfriend had the mussels and I ate the beet salad. The bill was less than $50! Everything was really good but I wouldn't suggest the shrimp cocktail- no frills to it. The beet salad, however, was really really good and the bacon that came with it so think and delicious! I second the recommendation of the salad/garlic bread appetizers. Had the Fillet Oscar and the steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and the lump crab meat was fresh and tasty. The wife had the trout which also was cooked to perfection and enormous! Topped off the meal with very good coffee and chocolate mouse. We had really high hopes for Peter's Inn - and we were rooting for it all the way - but we left feeling food-slighted and disappointed. This place had so much potential with beautifully conceptualized dishes and a fun atmosphere but the execution just was not there. We started with the tuna nachos (C+) and the beet salad (A-). The beet salad was fresh and good but there was way too much fried cheese on the plate and not enough beet. The aioli was overpowering, there wasn't enough tartar, and the avocado (which was totally unripe) did not belong on the plate - SO disappointing for a $20 dish. I had their blood orange and cava cocktail which tasted like pure alcohol (something I don't love). For dinner I had the scallops with lobster ravioli (C) and my partner had the Filet Oscar (C+). It was immediately clear that my scallops were not cooked on a hot enough pan (the coloring was too light) and when I bit into them they were just chewy. The ravioli were delicious however which is the only saving grace of this dish. C'mon...that chef should NOT have put those scallops out. The fried green tomatoes with the filet were way too firm (go figure since they're not in season), the bernaise was not creamy and fell apart on the plate and was overpowered by the tasso. Also, there was not enough crab and the potatoes were not impressive and the filet was on the rare side of medium rare when it was asked to be prepared medium. Again...c'mon chef. We split the pot du creme (B) for desert and it was fine - the fruit was fresh and the chocolate was fine but it wasn't anything special. I'm not sure what happened since this place has gotten such good reviews but I am really really close to giving in 2 stars . I might try it again when the seasons and menu change but I think the kitchen has a ways to go to catch up to its menu. read more

Do NOT order drinks here! They are as expensive as anything on the menu. Food, meh, ok. One dish was ok, the other super bland. Service super super slow. But the waiter was nice. I very much enjoy Peter's Inn because the menu changes daily and always offers something unique and interesting. The atmostphere is intimate and the place has very soft, pleasant lighting. During the spring, summer and fall it's great to eat outside. Their happy hour wine specials are also worth stopping in for. While I do enjoy the intimacy, I have to agree with some posters that the space can feel cramped. The tables themselves are pretty close together and if you have four people at a four person table you will have to arrange your plates and glasses like puzzle pieces to make them all fit. Overall, I would suggest making Peter's Inn a date night destination for two. I have also experienced slow food service (45 mins + after ordering) on a few occasions. I don't mind waiting for a good meal, but a little communication and some appetizers would have gone a long way, especially when the entree portions are relatively small. read more

The food was good, However I was there for work and with a small group of colleagues and they were unable to split the bill and use separate credit cards. I finally went here with husband back in June and I wondered why it took us so long to go. He used to go with his motorcycle crew but that was a long time ago. We went on a Thursday for dinner and snagged two seats at the bar. Colby was our bartender/server and made delicious cocktails and provided stellar service. The food that Chef Bud prepares is nothing short of spectacular-beautifully presented, fresh, farm to table, and immensely satisfying. For starters I got the green gazpacho with lump crab and cucumber. I just love gazpacho in the summer it's refreshing and cools the palette. Flavorful and enough to tide me over until our mains, the soup was just perfect. My husband ordered the 13 oz NY Strip with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and vegetables, while I opted for my go to, scallops. The steak was cooked medium (because I shudder when he orders Medium Well) which he enjoyed thoroughly. The seared day boat scallops were accented by beluga black lentils, celery root, bacon, and sorrel sauce. You could totally walk by this place thinking it was another corner pub, but you would miss out on a true neighborhood gem. One thing I will say though is if you plan to come in for dinner (really all you can do because you won't find room at the bar, and there's no room to stand) then you need to come right as they open to grab a table, or be prepared to wait - without a good place to stand. Seriously, the kitchen opens at 6:30 and I walked in at 6:25 and over half the tables were already filled. Our server was very nice, but I can't say that we saw him too much other than rushing past our table. Not a problem though as we were taking our time and enjoying the night out. I had the shrimp and grits - grits were amazing and shrimp was good, but there were only 3 actual shrimps - then there was like 4 crawfish maybe? Maybe I just diidn't know how to eat them, but opening them all I found was exoskeleton - nothing that looked edible. I don't know, maybe I"m slow, but it was confusing. My date had the day boat scallops and lobster risotto - not a huge portion but very very good. The scallops were cooked PERFECT. Nothing worse than an overcooked scallop. For dessert we split some pot of creme chocolate thing. I'm a chocolate lover through and through, but it was only okay - seemed like it should have been served at a different temperature. And the ice cream was freezer burnt, so that's always disappointing. All in all, I might come back and give this place another try since it's close, but I'm not sure it lived up to the hype I was expecting.
