It's been a long time since I've been to this spot! I dropped in for brunch with my cousin on an early Saturday afternoon. Given my experience with DC and other parts of MD, I was determined to contact them ahead of time and make sure I would have a spot for brunch. But after some contact on IG, they said it's just walk-ins and I would most likely get a table with no effort or wait. I was concerned... but they were right! So we got settled immediately and started ordering. Our gracious server asked for drinks, which have a bottomless option during brunch. We could pick from mimosas, crushes, sangria and bloody marys. I tried everything but the bloody marys, and while they were good, whew there was a lot of ice in the mimosa... I'm not used to ice there, so it threw me off but it was still good! The REAL highlight was the food... the item I got changed my life: Crab. Cake. Eggrolls. They came with this amazing sweet chili sauce and were so filling and delicious! I also got chicken & waffle sliders to go that had a nice kick and the waffle texture was great! My cousin enjoyed his food as well. Brunch on a Saturday at the Charles is such a cute spot. The inside is 2 stories and has beautiful white brick walls. They have a bunch of TVs showing various sporting games and event a great playlist going. They do bottomless bloody mary's, orange crushes, or mimosas for just $15!! What a good deal! We got a bunch of appetizers. The old bay wings were so good and crunchy. Bang bang shrimp and the crab cake egg rolls which are a tie for my favorite. The egg rolls were AMAZING and if I could eat these every day I simply would. So crunchy and delicious. The bang bang shrimp were coated in the perfect amount of sauce. I LOVED these as well. I've actually been to The Charles a couple times but always at night, and it's usually a good time just for the crowd and energy. I came for brunch/lunch on a game day this past Sunday though with a group of people and I was kind of disappointed? The drinks were fine, a little sweet, but they have these gameday vodka mixed drinks that are $7 which is nice (no clue what type of vodka it is but you can't really taste the vodka anyways). We didn't realize that on game days you're ONLY allowed to get food off the game day menu, which probably would've been fine except that I felt like the food was just ok? The burger tasted kind of burnt (not in a good way), I got the bang bang shrimp which tasted fine but was a really small portion size, the fries were meh. On top of that, they charged me for an extra Pitt sandwich that no one ordered, which I didn't realize until after I had paid for the table and was sending out Venmo requests.. it's sort of on me to check the tab before paying, but after the disappointing food, the extra $15 just soured my mood a little more. I'll honestly probably be back at night some time but definitely won't be getting food or coming for a game. read more

I came here for brunch and ordered the croissant breakfast sandwich. While the food was tasty, it was over priced. My partner got a steak meal for breakfast, and his steak was very overcooked. The brunch menu is also not extensive. What made the experience better was the bottomless mimosas and sangria's. I highly recommend getting the mixed sangria. Went when they first opened, around 4pm. Our server, Madi was.. Thebomb.com. The layout is beautiful. There are booths/sections to the right, stand up tables in the middle, then a bar to the left with endless TV's. The major TV is right across from the sections upstairs (at night time at 10pm a DJ and bottle service us offered). The food was all amazing I rarely ever eat poultry meat but the chicken chipotle quesadillas... To die for. The best chipotle type food I've ever had.. So far. I love crab meat, would rate the egg rolls a 8/10. The bang bang shrimp was not your typical sauce but still good! Gives more Thai chili type of sauce.... The servings were so large for the pricing - 4 entrees for $60. Also a nice place to grab brunch. The shrimp and grits was on the smaller side portion-wise but it looked very pretty and was filling enough. Since it's on the smaller side, the 5 shrimp feel very generous and you should have enough for every bite of the grits. Overall a very satisfying dish after a night of drinking. I am conflicted about The Charles. I loved it during the yelp event and had great good during a menu tasting but it seems that outside of special events the menu doesnt hold up. Organized a bday dinner there because they have great open bar options that everyone should take advantage of. $30 will get you three hours of open bar and that is not rail options we are talking about so its a great deal! they have different levels of the open bar and its easy to set up its such a great idea. back to the food: the egg rolls were more roll than filling the mac and cheese had fried chicken that was superfluous and ended up just being mushy the burger was tasteless and over cooked the chicken wings were the best out of the bunch and even some of those were a little too on the salty side I had the Italian sausage and that was more bread that anything else The service however was great and attentive as always and the space itself was just redone so its cute, the dance floor upstairs is spacious and the DJ knows what he is doing. If you go to the Charles go for the atmosphere and the drinks and dont rely on them for food. Came for a private event. Was able to snag a booth that we shared with others. The space had high ceilings with a second level accessible by stairs. We were greeted with a complimentary champagne by pleasant hosts at the door. They passed around appetizers, which were tasty ( meatballs, buffalo cauliflower, Korean beef, crispy brussel sprouts, mini marshmallow dipped in chocolate, white chocolate covered strawberries with edible sparkle). They had holiday themed drinks at a reasonable price ($7). A martini named after the Grinch, which was green and had a red cherry at the bottom, sangria, hot cider and others. The bar ran the length of the wall and although the place was packed, I managed to get the attention of the bartenders and place drink orders twice during the event without having to wait a substantially long time. The restrooms were accessible via a winding ramp. We were lucky to park on the street, which has metered parking, but we only hlad to pay for one hour as the meters are active until 8pm. There are parking garages in the area, just Google them. They had a few photographers in the crowd capturing candid moments of the party goers, but one photographer in particular did not catch the diversity of the crowd, which was evident in the pictures posted on the business's IG account of the event. I took away one star because of it. Don't know if The Charles has any control of that, but mindfulness is key. I was introduced to The Charles through a Yelp event. I only had enough time to enjoy a tin man drink, take a picture and be on my way but I knew this would be a place I'd come back to. I told my BF about the bar/restaurant and he suggested us to go for brunch. And here we are. Comfortably tucked away in a booth in front of large screen TVs showing soccer games and highlights counting down to the super bowl. We were informed that some plates were tapas style and others were full portions. Everything on the menu looked amazing so we ordered damn near everything lol. Deviled eggs, scotch egg, breakfast burger, general tso chicken wings, chicken and waffle sliders and crab hummus. Oh and tin mans to wash it all down. No, we didn't just get off a year long fast. And no, we weren't even starving lol. We're just foodies and we like our options. My favorite dish was the chicken and waffle sliders. The waffles were made with cornbread and love and the chicken was perfectly fried. My BF favorite were the wings. Our least favorite were the deviled eggs, as they were too salty. It wasn't bad it's just something that we wouldn't order again. The service here is impeccable! Our table had our menus laid out before we arrived and our hostess was very attentive. The bartender brought over coupons for free sangria the next time we come in for brunch. The BF was also able to sample the sangria which he enjoyed. I'm glad I was able to experience The Charles for brunch. I will definitely be back. Nice for couples or a group of friends. I ventured to this establishment to share time with a special group a friends and it was a fantastic experience! When I first drove by to look for a parking space, it was so many ooooo's and aaaahhh's just from the appearance of front of the establishment. They have a beautiful and welcoming lobby area when you first enter w a host/ hostess immediately to your right to assist you with whatever you need is for the evening. Immediately left, is the well-lit and beautifully well stocked bar. It was Picture Perfect! A long well decorated bar area with plenty of seats for friends and family! Next, I ventured upstairs to go see where the party was at and that's when the yumminess began! My belly was able to partake in the House Burger Slider, Moroccan Cauliflower, Caprese Crostini, Tuna Tartar Tacos and Crab Hummus w Grilled Flatbread. Everything was well plated, presented and delicious! The burger was definitely my favorite! Well cooked through w the perfect sauce (French onion mayo) and potato sticks. Another favorite was the Moroccan Cauliflour... I ate at last 2 servings of that yumminess!! I quenched my thirst w the signature drink of the evening, "Tin Man" and a delicious Sangria. This establishment showed up and out w all the professionalism, kindness and consistency w ensuring guest were well fed and comfy. The upstairs open area was fit for cutting a rug and spacious. I got a chance to try pretty much everything on the menu thanks to a yelp event and dinner and i wasn't really disappointed in much. I'll start with the ambiance of the bar, the place is sexy! The booths around the edge of the bar are perfect for a quiet night with your boo or a fun girls night out. They have great music and a DJ, im not sure if the DJ is just on weekends and for special events but the live music is nice. The staff is also amazing! They go above and beyond and i dont think it was just because of the Yelp event. When i first arrived the night of the event our bartender and the manager went out of their way to make sure we were happy and on my second visit they were just as great. Special shout out to Lauren and Tyler who were just a part of that amazing staff. Now on to the good stuff drinks and food! So of all the drinks i tried will have to say they have some skilled bartenders behind the bar! The tin man is the perfect take on a whisky mule and is not too strong but too many of them will knock you on your tail. The Charles Martini is also pretty delicious but I will say they make a mean dirty martini as well. The way the menu is set up is that things are served in small plates. Since I basically tried everything i will only highlight my favorites. The BLT biscuits and chicken and waffle sliders were delicious. The chicken and waffle sliders were a little too spicy for me since i have the spice palate of a toddler but i still enjoyed the flavor. I also really enjoyed the grits under the scallops, they were the perfect consistency. The cauliflower bites and devil eggs were close seconds in the things i absolutely enjoyed. The only thing I could have done without was the steak oscar. The steak was a little over salted and the potatoes were overcooked. As far as dessert again delicious but the stand out for me was the red velvet cheesecake they had on special for valentines day and the spilt mike and cookies. Disclosure: I came here for a Yelp Elite event. The Charles really surprised me. It replaces Mad River and the layout is totally different. I really enjoyed the classy vibe of the venue despite being situated in Fed Hill (can be not so classy). Upstairs there's a neon sign that's a instagram op for many. Hopefully there's a DJ there on normal nights because I could see it being a really fun place to go. Food and drinks were great too. I had a cauliflower dish that was phenomenal. I tried the sliders which were juicy and flavorful. Apparently they also have some lobster rolls which I didnt get a chance to try. On to the drinks: the highlight of the night was the Tin Man. I have enjoyed coming here each time! It's such an unexpected surprise as it blends, discreetly, into the busy college life of Federal Hill bars. Although they serve mostly bar food, the food is delicious and the servers/bartenders are always so pleasant! The restaurant is set back a bit from the street as actually thought it was an apartment building as it had a tile foyer with name Charles written out. It was just a sign that place was an upscale sports bar with a neighborhood vibe. That neighborhood vibe is exemplified by the complementary donut wall covered with donuts from nearby Diablo. The service was good as staff more than willing to change one of the tvs to the game you want. I have been surprised at other places when that seems to be a problem with staff not knowing what channel say ESPNnews is. One comes to a bar for food and drink and both were good but not great. My Bloody Mary had okay amount of vodka, mix they use was okay and judge they put tobasco in it as asked if wanted It regular or spicy. My sangria also had that quickly mixed together instead of taste get wine fruit is soaked in wine. The donut was good and they had plenty of types. My chicken and biscuits more like sliders. Wish chicken could have been thinner and wider as prefer to have protein in every bite. Chicken itself did not have much flavor so needed the provided maple syrup or tobasco. Definitely good option for brunch and judge game day lunch food also good. I plan to return. I did return and the difference was why I do not like to give reviews after 1 visit or give lower stars as could not have been more different as likely would have given 2 stars if this was my first time and not returned. This was on Sunday before a home Game but this place though busy was not overcrowded and most people doing drinks. I ordered the basic egg platter. It took 40 minutes to arrive even though got told twice it would be right out. When it did arrive the potato's were undercooked as still hard and cold. Update 1/29/20: randomly came with my coworker after work Wednesday night. It happened to be the one year anniversary of drag bingo and I must say my experience was noteably better this time around. Service was great, we both had 15.00 bottomless sangrias me white, and her red. Delicious! The music selection was much better, random free shots, bingo was fun and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The queens ended the night lip syncing to Lady Marmalade and I liveddd. Came here for yesterday for Wednesday night drag bingo. Their specials were .50 cent wings and 15 bottomless rails, sangrias and mimosas. I ordered whiskey and ginger (a bit watered down), wings and their bang bang shrimp. The food and service was great especially considering the size of my party, the drinks KEPT coming.Bingo was cool, but the atmosphere honestly didn't feel as lively or welcoming as I hoped for. And the music, my goodness, I love Brittany Spears as much as the next person but I feel like that's all that was played, with the exception of a few Bey hits. To see The Charles grow the way it has in the last year has been absolutely incredible and they deserve it! Giving some of us in Federal Hill/Riverside area a place to go if we want a little more thought put into our meals/appetizers and cocktails as opposed to its previous life as a Sports Bar in Mad River. One of my favorite drinks in the city is their House Red Sangria that they always have on tap, make sure you ask for a glass when you get in. Fun tip if you Check-In on Yelp App you will receive a free glass of Sangria with your purchase, so make sure you take advantage and let them know what you think of it. Very nice looking inside but didn't turn out as expected. Went with my wife for drinks and dinner. Started off great with reasonably priced drinks and food but was mostly a disappointment. Ordered a beer I usually like (bells two hearted) and it tasted off (maybe an old keg, maybe dirty lines) didn't love it but it was cheap and I didn't want to make a fus so I just order a second drink. The "sangria" was... odd. Kinda tasted like something you would get at a frat party. Speaking of frat parties, that is kinda what it felt like in there. Around the time our food arrived, so did the "bros." It quickly became more crowded with frat-type guys and we realized that is what this place is for. Food was fine but we kinda just shoveled it down and headed out. I would go back again for a quick drink, or if I wanted to get wasted and party I'm sure it's a good time, just not really for me. Wow! This was my first time at The Charles and my overall impression: excellent service, atmosphere, drinks, and food. I came here for brunch at 11am on a Saturday, and there was a good number of people there. It's modern and clean inside, and there's an upstairs as well. The music was loud and fun, people were chatty, the big TVs were on behind the bar, and the door was open to some beautiful weather. On Saturdays, they apparently have FREE Diablo Donuts during brunch (as informed by our waitress). For that alone, I'd come back! Those donuts were incredible, and they had really great flavors like maple bacon, blueberry basil, and lemon poppyseed available. The donuts are hung up on a wall for customers to take; such a cute idea. They were nice enough to let me take one home for my boyfriend. $15 for bottomless brunch drinks is a great deal if you plan on knocking quite a few drinks back. My friend and I got mimosas and orange crushes, both of which were sweet, light, and just right. We both got the brunch burger, which was incredibly delicious. This burger and the shrimp & grits are the most expensive brunch items at $16, but the rest seems reasonably priced. The combination of the thick slice of melted American cheese, oozing egg, and tender burger made the whole dish so good from the first bite. I asked for my burger to be cooked medium rare -- it was juicy and had great flavor. It was a bit on the rarer side for both me and my friend (she ordered medium), but I had no problem with this because it tasted fantastic and I happen to like rarer beef. I would just tell your server if you are particular about having the burger more well-done, and I'm sure the chef would be accommodating. The crispy potatoes that came on the side were well-seasoned and came in a good portion. I personally asked for mayo on the side and then mixed it up with some of the sriracha that they have on the tables to make a dip. The potatoes don't need anything, but I just like it better that way. We also had their avocado toast. What an impressive presentation. It was served on a tall slice of toast that was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were generous with the avocado and topped it with almond slivers, fruits, and some other flavors and garnishes. I personally enjoy more savory avocado toast, but this toast was still a winner for me. The servers came in and checked on us multiple times (the chef came once as well). They were kind and attentive. All in all, a great experience here, and I will be back! Disclaimer: The restaurant invited my friend to come back to try their food again because she wasn't impressed with the food at her last experience here, so our meal was compensated for other than gratuity. Brunch was decent and if you're getting the bottomless I suggest the white sangria. They will let you mix and match but I preferred the white sangria over the Bloody Mary and mimosas. I had the cornbread waffle and it was really good. I added a chicken breast but I wouldn't suggest it. Just get the regular breakfast meats. read more

The Charles is a great location to be among professionals and fun-loving people. I really enjoyed my time there for a holiday party. The views from the loft are amazing. The venue has great acoustics - so consider your self lucky if the DJ is pumping that night. There is a bar upstairs and downstairs. Don't forget to check in for a free Sangria, which is delicious. There were some small bites which were passed around, that arrived to us a bit cold. However, the saucy meatball and buffalo cauliflower bites were good to help sop up the Sangria. If you're the type that likes to sit down, there are several booths upstairs which give you a view of the large televisions that were tuned into a sports news sessions. The Charles is a funny place because catch it on a gamely of any kind and it is loud and crazy and raucous but then on an off day without any games to lure in a crowd it becomes this upscale quiet nook for good food. Really a funny place when it comes to the ambiance. We went with a large part on a Tuesday and it was easy to find seating and order a ton of delicious food. Overall their weakest point was their margaritas, there was a deal for $5 margs and $2 tacos. The tacos were delicious, we had the firecracker (a spicy chicken taco) and the breakfast taco. Both really well done! The wings were awesome, crispy and not bathed in sauce with lovely spices. Another thing that was suprisingly great was the pizza wontons-- easy to share and appeals to those picky eaters out there. read more

I love the Charles as a venue for events although when it comes to seating arrangements for a bunch of guests, there are very limited seats but there is an ample amount of space for shaking that tail feather. The food that was catered during the events are left to be desired. The music during the Charles nightlife is not for my taste. It doesn't matter about that, it's about the people you're with. No, it's about the music. Overall, the space is clean and one of the spots you should stop by during your bar crawl through fed hill. O M G. After looking for the perfect place to celebrate being alive for three decades, I found The Charles and new it was a perfect fit. I could not have asked for a more responsive and awesome crew to work with while planning this out. Andrew and Lauren were magnificent, they were able to find a way to make everything happen. DAY OF: My husband went down early to decorate the space and when I arrived I couldn't believe how beautiful everything was! My guests and I felt like royalty and had an amazing time. NICK is the best bartender in Baltimore. People could not get over how great he was! Plenty of great beers on tap, wine was chilled perfectly, sangria was poppin' and the drinks were killer. You know I am about that food life, so we decided to order some food and again, my guests were in love. The talk of the night was definitely the Nashville Hot Avocado. LAWD. YES. The fries were the perfect munchie munch, the spice and dipping sauces added such a little zaz. I cannot recommend this place enough. Swung by there for brunch after hearing rave reviews about the space. it is indeed gorgeous. Baltimore is indeed stepping up its aesthetic pleasing aspects of restaurants. Now, Food and Drinks my favorite part. Its tapas style so I decided to indulge. I had the breakfast burger that was delicious, had the scotch egg-decent, chicken wings-delicious, deviled eggs-way too salty, crab humus-humus was too thick. By way of drinks I had 3 Tin man, delicious but not strong enough wish they added more whisky. I tasted their sangria-way too sweet. All in all I like the ambiance, the restaurant is gorgeous and the food is above average to warrant some repeat visits. Awesome spot! Went here for the help elite party. The drinks were awesome and so was the food. Tried the lobster ragoons and the spinach artichoke Mac and cheese during the party. Both were delicious, great flavors. The cocktails were great too. All the bartenders were super friendly as well. After the party I sat at the bar downstairs and tried some other foods off the menu. I tried the Nashville avocado, fries and chicken wings. I wasnt a fan of the avocado, I just ate the pickles off and left it. But the fries had this amazing caramelized onions dipping sauce that was to die for. I had to ask for extra. Also the general two chicken wings were the bomb! They were charred and the sauce was good. They came with broccoli on the side which was just as delious as the wings. Will def be back! read more

The Tin Man drinks were spot on! Super refreshing and went down very easy. The fried lobster raviolis with house made duck-sauce were killer. They were definitely a 2-big bites portions! The Moroccan cauliflower was unique and flavorful - loved the little charred bits! The hummus and pita, caprese crostinis, tuna tartar taco, and sliders were tasty. Mhmm! The venue was amazing. It was classy and sophisticated - but welcoming too! Definitely not your average Federal Hill bar/pub. I look forward to visiting this place again with my girlfriends! read more

The security here knows what they're doing is wrong but chooses to continue to make a quick buck. I came in with two other girls, admittedly one was under 21. Her ID was confiscated by a bouncer (fair) no issues with that he's just doing his job, but we were approached by a secondary bouncer asking if we had cash app. When I asked for what he said we could pay him to get her ID back. I said I don't have cash app but I had physical cash on me and went to hand it to him while in the front of the establishment. He suspiciously looked around for a camera and then said not here. He urged us to follow him outside to the edge of the business and then complete our transaction. He moved off premise because he knew his actions were wrong. After giving him the money we started to leave but then he allowed all 3 of us in knowing that the one girl was underage. In the moment I didn't think about how strange this was but looking back this feels really wrong and I wanted to let management know so that he can be perhaps held responsible. As someone who is genuinely of age I will not be coming back to the Charles based on this predatory experience. Not a safe place for young women! read more

Considering its relatively new status, The Charles had my interest as soon as I discovered it online. I booked a table here for Valentines night and was pleasantly surprised to find an upscale, classy bar upon arrival. You're surrounded by a warm, intimate atmosphere on the first floor with booth and hightop seating by the bar. This is in stark contrast to the second floor, where it's obviously meant for dancing and parties. All in all, this is a classy bar ideal for anything from happy hours to group dinners to dinner dates. One quirk however is that the bathroom is located upstairs (why no bathroom downstairs?). The food was great-- expect a tapas style menu with relatively small plates. While I was a bit disappointed that the food took some time to come out on a night not all that busy, I was ecstatic when it did. My favorite aspect of this bar has got to be the drinks-- the cocktails are phenomenal. See below for my thoughts on everything I had: Things I Liked: Nashville Hot Avocado - You've essentially got fried avocado dabbled in hot sauce (it's not that hot) alongside zucchini pickles. I really liked this unique dish-- the creaminess of the avocado is perfect against the fried breading. 4/5 Curry Gnocchi - Gnocchi is one of my favorite dishes--full stop. This is a very unique taste, with Indo-inspired spices and chickpeas infusing flavor into the gnocchi. The crisp apples, though seemingly strange, actually work well with this dish. My only issues was that the gnocchi was just a bit too tough for me; gnocchi should melt in one's mouth. 4/5 Chicken & Waffle Sliders - The cornbread waffles are very good; however, I wish the chicken was more crisp and that it eschewed more buffalo spice. This dish has a ton of potential-- but it was a bit lacking for me. 3/5 Tin Man - This has got to be the signature cocktail here. You're served Tin Cup whiskey with cranberry, lemon, and refreshingly crisp ginger beer. It's very drinkable and goes down easy. The rosemary garnish is the cherry on top. 5/5 The Charles Martini - Another great cocktail that is brought together with its lychee vodka and coconut water. 4/5 Things I Disliked: Tuna Tartar Tacos - These weren't bad, but they just didn't have much flavor. All in all, it was an average dish and was the only one I wouldn't order again. 2/5 The Charles has solidified itself as one of my favorite up-and-coming bars in Baltimore. So I was here last night for my friend birthday and I was impressed. It was my first time here. The lighting and the ambience alone was really nice. The Customer service was superb! I think Customer Service is a BIG thing for me knowing that I have a management background. They were pretty crowded because there was a college football game on. The bartenders apologized for the long wait but they were still respectful and pretty swift with making sure everyone was happy. The kitchen closes at 10 so make sure you get your order in. I had the Thai wings with broccoli and it was awesome. The other patrons there were very nice, I made a few friends while I was there. The DJ was on point. it was just a good atmosphere with great energy. I have nothing bad to say about this place. I found a new hang out spot. read more
