I am looking for a dog and was recommended to Petfinder by a local pet store and I've had a horrible experience. NONE of the rescue organizations have responded to emails and/or applications. The applications are long, intrusive, and judgmental. Why do they need to know where I work or where my husband works? Regardless, I refuse to use them--in my opinion, they are just as bad as puppy-mill breeders. read more

Petfinder does not care about helping pets find homes nor small rescues. Petfinder makes it difficult to impossible to list a foster animal. They make the process so difficult that they frustrate small rescues that are overwhelmed and just trying to help home rescues. We applied and sent every document they required. They take days to respond and then tell you something else you have to do for the process. We gave them our application for adoption which meets all of their requirements and they sent us an email saying our spay neuter policy wasn't good enough. When we replied in frustration and quoted our policy and asked them why they take so long to reply and make the process so difficult, this was their response: "We have determined that your group is not eligible for Petfinder membership at this time. Our Terms of Service state that eligibility for membership is determined at the sole discretion of Petfinder." We expected this response because we finally looked up their reviews which were mostly very bad, because it was such a horrible process for us. read more

They need to really check their rescue people. We wanted to adopt from Barbie Ferro in NJ and East Texas. She brought us 2 very skinny puppies with worms and wouldn't let us bring them to the vet. Then took them from us over a month later under false pretence. At that point, we had already dewormed them and they both were an awesome weight. They weren't the amasiated puppies we had gotten in the beginning. We also had them trained to go outside, walk on a leash and sit & stay. She is discussing and shouldn't be rescuing any animals. I like the idea of the website, so I gave them two stars. It provides a centralize list of animals up for adoption. Instead of me having to check on Google for an animal rescue center for each city in a 50 mile radius. I am just not too sure about some of the animal rescue centers that are listed on Petfinder however. I had a couple of places that wouldn't even take the time to email back an answer to a question I had about one of their dogs. I have filled out applications and submitted the $20 to $25 application fee. Then I never heard back from them. After the application process, one place told me that many of their dogs they had listed have been in kennels for a long time and they were not well trained or use to human contact. Since my wife and I are over 55, one place wanted us to have an pre-approved back-up dog owner. read more

I find it finders a great place I was able to adopt my cat Tucker who brought joy to our family he was already neutered and microchipped. I find them very organized they were able to provide a small orientation on his care needs and before I took him home. read more

I have found matches on the website, send inquiries to try to adopt the dog(s) and never hear back from ANYONE! Petfinder is nothing but Scam. As for actual application for adoption, I contacted rescue shelters directly and didn't rely on their services. I was happy with tons of listing they have. I used KittyKaretakers on Petfinder and they recommended me an animal hoarder. Petfinder doesn't check organization registries (https://agriculture.ny.gov/animals/shelter-and-rescue-registration) before adopting from agencies like this. I'm not sure how they do their background check as they claim but it's clearly not as thorough as they claim. KittyKaretakers is not registered with the IRS as a charity, non-profit, or tax-exempt organization, has not appeared on the IRS Business Master File for months, and had their tax-exempt status revoked for failure of filing proper tax forms for 3 consecutive years already. THEY'RE STILL ACTIVE ON PETFINDER. I reached out to them two years ago and they were called "Kitty Karetakers" and now they've removed the space: "KittyKaretakers". I'm not sure if that changes their history or track record but it's all-around shady and Petfinder is just as guilty in giving them a platform. Please go to official rescues/organizations for adopting a pet. Even if it takes longer, at least you know the animal and you are in good hands. Please don't support illegitimate animal organizations or the sites that enable their illegal business. read more

Have emailed this place numerous times restarting a 2 animals I had found that I was interested in. I have not received a single word back from anyone and it's been over a few months. It's like they don't want to adopt the animals out to have better lives at all. They don't give a flying fuck honestly. You'd have better luck going to an actual shelter. You find a pet that you want. You fill out their application and submit it. They email you to tell you that they have forwarded your application to the party that has the pet. But they don't. After a week I contacted the party to find out they never received the application or any information from Petfinder. I then went to Petfinder.com and advised them of the problem, that they tell you that they forward your application without actually doing it. I got a nonsensical reply. I tried to explain again what the problem was and got an cheerful but idiotic reply. Man, Petfinder sucks! read more

If I could list it as less than 1 star I would. I want to adopt a dog and give it a forever home, so I went to Petfinder to find a dog that needs a home. Found one and filled out an application and sent it to Adopt-a-doggie through Petfinder. I was contacted by someone who works with Adopt-a-doggie in California. Petfinder is listing many animals from the organization Adopt-a-doggie and they are based in Taiwan. All their dogs come from Taiwan and in my case I would have to meet the dog at San Francisco International Airport. WTH?? We have too many dogs in California/United States that need homes, why bring dogs from a foreign country instead of promoting them. I will never use Petfinder again, there are other organizations/rescue groups that offer the same service but are providing dogs from California/United State. read more

Petfinder don't care about dogs.They are in for the $$$$. The Sellers are are not check. Some sellers go to local animal shelters, Adopt the dogs for under $100 & put it on sale on Petfinders for $300 to $500. They are price gouging. We got a puppy from Petfinders Seller, Brought it home not even 24 hours, the puppy ended up in emergency with Parovirus Call seller, she didn't believe us.Seller came & met us at the Vet, she finally ended up paying me back my $$$$ but we had to pay for the Vet. Worst, the Vet told her,if she take the puppy now,it may die during its journey because the puppy was very sick. The Seller didn't care. We call that abuse of animal!!! These people are super coordinated and up front about everything. I'm looking for a new kitty or maybe two kitties to fill the Siamese sized hole in my cold Grinch heart and found them on Craigslist. They're not a shelter and they're a group of volunteers trying to save the animals from being euthanized. I'm down with that. There's pictures and bios of all the animals and the website is so organized! I'm in techno geeky love here. If you forget which little furry ball of love you just recently looked at 'cause there are so many you're going to click on anyhow, they show you on the bottom of the screen. They narrow down breeds, ages, sizes, restrictions. Oh my goodness, it's like I'm ordering a car, but instead a 2 ton piece of steel, I'm looking for a cuddly buddy to wake up to and come between me and the boyfriend. Ha ha! They all come spayed/neutered (thank you Bob Barker), with shots, vet visit included and a strict screening process for applicants. That's what I'm talking about people! Spoke with someone named LJ, very rude and unprofessional! Asked me if I had done research on potty training and I said no, but that my husband had experience because all of his child hood and adult life he owned dogs. I repeated that to her plenty of times, told her we had 2 daughters one is 14months, she said she didn't think we could handle it. Who are you? They are the reason more people don't adopt, clearly they don't want people to. After spending a long time searching, filling out applications, and emailing foster owners, I finally got a chance to meet some of the litters of puppies. I would drive for up to 3 hours to see them hoping to take one home, just to be told I have to fill out more applications. Never got a call or email like they promised me. I made sure I met every one of their ridiculous criteria and still nothing. I know they want the dogs to go to good homes, I grew up with dogs all my life. I think this site is wonderful. It's the match.com for animal lovers. It is basically a resource for all the smaller rescue groups to post their available pets for adoption. Before you go looking in the paper for an expensive breed, I suggest you have a peek at this site. Not only do they have lovely mutts they have a lot of purebreeds. We went online in Campbell Ca to find a new dog We had to put our 2 15yr old dogs down at Christmas I filled out a application online Thursday & again on Friday Finally we got a list of questions back to anwser plus we Had to send pictures of our house and yard. it's Monday Afternoon and Still not a word !! Pet Finder is actually a really great service, and I love it because it lists all the Shelters in your area, but I would beware that I think some unscrupulous breeders are using this site to make $$ from their home puppy mills. I had a friend who got her "rescued" dog from someone she found on Petfinder, (turned out to be pregnant and sick!!) But she still kept her after an enormous amount of money. I love the mission of Petfinder - connecting people with pets. It's a great idea, but the site falls short. Often complicating, rather than easing the search. Without petfinder, I think more shelters would have their own sites, and the ones that still do are usually a joy to navigate compared to petfinder. Petfinder gives the appearance of letting the user sort on all fronts, but excludes key filters to promote pets at rescue groups. Previous reviewers have taken issue with rescue groups, and with good reason. These groups typically charge many times what shelters charge and appear to cherry-pick desired breeds. But petfinder provides no means for users to simply and easily exclude search results from rescues (or shelters, for that matter). I can search by breed, sex, and age, but not by the type of organization? And yes, yes, I know I can look up shelters near me, then look at their pet lists. One by one. And once I'm in their pet lists I can't filter - there's no way to say, of the 78 pets at this shelter I'm only interested in the dogs. Not the cats. Not the rabbits. Not the birds. The site is clearly able to sort by animal species, breed, and so on, yet mysteriously unable to do so once you're on the pet list for a specific group? This site would get full stars if they'd allow people to search by organization type - is it a rescue or a shelter, or even by keyword - does rescue appear in the organization name? What about humane or SPCA? And once on a group's adoptable pet list, by all that's fluffy, users should still be able to filter by animal species, sex, and age. read more

Have used Petfinder for years to locate many perfect rescues between Richmond Hill and west of Stratford for my cat-oriented home in Ontario. I am extremely close to my rescues, spend most of my retired hours with them, and treat them as well as family. Unfortunately for me, PETFINDER SERVICES IS REDUNDANT due to the fact that the rescue organizations they showcase refuse to adopt outside their own local area - no how dedicated a cat-mom you are. I understand that this is due to wanting the cats to receive follow-up care/neutering at their own designated vet, but to deny adoption to someone who can provide a solid history of medical care is restrictive to me and insensitive to the "adoptees" who should have the chance to belong to a true "family". I am very discouraged to have my months of Petfinder search thwarted repeatedly. PETFINDER IS OUTDATED NOW. For years I have adopted only rescues, but this fall I am going to contact breeders to find my next family member. Sorry to all the homeless cats I will never take in, but rescue policy has refused to put you into my hands. read more

Did a search on Petfinder.com for a pet within a 25mi radius of my zip code. Found a match, filled out the invasive 5 page application, endured the home inspection only to find out the pet was being fostered 100 miles away in another state. When I question the rescue owner, she became defensive and abusive. I emailed Petfinder.com 3 times and never received a response. Currently waiting on a response from corporate@ Nestle-Purina who owns this "non-profit." I feel I was misled & urge others not to use this service, but to adopt locally. read more

Petfinder is the worst organization I have ever had to deal with. I run a Non-profit animal shelter, and I began my restristration process in July of 2017. It is DECEMBER 2017 and I still cannot get Petfinder to complete my account. They refuse to respond to my multiple emails. They will not call me. They are the absolute worst company I've ever needed to deal with. I will not recommend them to any other fellow dog rescuers, shelters, sanctuaries or any other animal organizations and I firmly will not recommend them to any adopters.
