We have visited there before and LOVE the selection of animals they offer! (They also are one of the only "TRUE" pet shops still in Delaware, or even around close enough to go to)We weren't going to go there knowing we were walking out with a new pet or anything we just wanted to look and play with the animals (which btw someone said they weren't allowed to pet the Guinea pigs and got yelled at? I don't understand that because my daughter and I were allowed to pet them also ONLY PLACE I KNOW THAT OFFERS ANYTHING OTHER THAN COMMON ONES LIKE geckos and shit. As we're finishing our time up My heart just melted when I saw an Argentine black and white TEGU! So as we were there for 15 minutes a nice gentleman came over, named PHIL, and offered to take him out and look at him. I said really? Phil said absolutely we just started talking basics.I asked about his diet. He admitted he wasn't sure, and he thinks that he was probably fed rodents to get him so big. I myself, do not do or allow live rodent feedings. So that was concerning, However, he said, he wouldn't either and said he doesn't even really like frozen for reptiles (his knowledge is incredible) but since he thinks he was fed rodents he would show us and make SURE he in fact ate frozen at least because So he got a frozen rat defeosted brought it over and began the process of feeding him to assure us he was good.I told him I had to go to mall though, and he said that's great, why don't you talk it over. Well I went back there Phil was unfortunately gone like he said he would be. Was he a little bit more overpriced then what I could of gotten had I ordered one, yes! But they are a small business who want him to go to good home I know this because Phil was very pleased I was asking good questions I appreciated that so much that he wasn't looking to just "make a sale"I do understand some of the things the pet shop does that people complain and give one star about, such as, the "mice females, being with males for breeding. Well, yea of course they are those mice you see are feeder mice. And to make this price affordable but still profitable they have to do things like that to make the price good for customers. The mice are mistreated The fish tanks are good and clean. Some tanks may not look it but when you put live plants that happens but they also are pretty clean for having such a variety to choose from compared to others which have a small selection and can't even maintain them right. I am an animal lover and hate seeing puppies in a small cage as well. But I also know if they left them running around and such it could cause one getting injured, the cleanliness of the place would t be very good. There are always going to be some flaw with any company. For instance when getting Hades, they offered where you could buy the 40 gallon breeder tank, stand and tegu for $800. The stand and tank alone are worth at least idk a good $400. that enclosure was not wide enough for him really. He needs bigger. I understand having him in there to sell. The problem I had with the situation was that with that deal it allows people to believe it is "ok" for him to actually "live" in that enclosure and with that small heat setup. However, everything else I noticed was great. When I returned after the mall to retrieve him, Katie, another employee, asked if I was there to go ahead and get him. I said absolutely! Now, she didn't talk to me as much as Phil did, and her customer service wasn't as pleasurable. But she wasn't nasty or rude really. It was just different and straight point! But, I know this is long and I hope you made it to the end with an actual detailed review. No just some angry customer who went on yelp to leave a nasty review without knowing anything. Or someone who doesn't understand the true background to pet shops. I don't agree with everything but I learn to understand it. Like for the puppies, supposedly coming from puppy mills, maybe they do, maybe they don't idk personally because I didn't ask, I wasn't there for the puppies. They are cute don't get me wrong but not my gig. However, with that said I understand being mad at them about how they get them. But puppy mills are NOT going to stop EVER! And yes they may sell them for ridiculous amount of money but consider this if you buy a cheaper puppy, you will still have to get all the shots, the vet visits all the medicines as well on your dime. And first time visits for pups can run you like between 800 to 1,500 for the first time. Not even counting the meds they may need. Buying a puppy with them comes with a guarantee It also comes with your first vet visit and any meds.They also mention any possible problems or concerns about their animals. After searching for months in several stares for the perfect pup to bring home, I finally came across my little guy at Pet Kare II. They have a Facebook page that conveniently posts the animals they have available, which is awesome, especially if you're coming from out of town like myself. Long story short, I was able to pick him up and I was extremely impressed with how informative they are making sure you know everything that's going on with your pup. I had the pleasure of working with Amber, who was extremely helpful and super sweet! My little guy had kennel cough (very common) and a Molera (happens in 80-90% of chihuahuas), and she explained it to me in detail. The office stands by their pups, and I was shocked to see that they cover the first medical exam (with Dr. Spencer), along with ANY prescriptions that your animal needs. My vet visit was great and I felt very comfortable with the doctor they work with. He was very gentle with my baby and the whole staff loved him. Amber helped me get set up with everything I needed to go home and make sure my pup was taken care of. She is definitely a great asset to this business, as you can see she truly enjoys what she does and cares about the animals. Thank you Pet Kare! read more

There staff always makes you wait, they are quick to assume your up to no good, the dogs are over priced and look like they come from a puppy mill it's pretty ridiculous you have to pay to interact with them, so they have no socialization at all. Another small business to gratefully support. The variety of products they offer is impressive. Furthermore, I was shopping with one of my friends who has complete blindness. She has an Orcam device that can be attached to her glasses and verbally describe what is in front of her. However, the Orcam does not always produce reliable audio descriptions. When the Orcam didn't work, the staff was more than happy and capable to help my friend. This establishment deserves the $60 my friend paid for in purchases. read more

I used to work here a while ago. I worked as a grooming assistant. And how the groomers treated the dogs horrified me but I couldn't say anything cause I was scared of loosing my job. In the end I was fired anyways. They didn't tell me why either. Fast forward to months, almost a year later, I was getting myself some fancy rats. Love my girls to death, but the employee who got them for me aggressively picked them up by their tail, which no one should ever do. The last time I went in there was to grab my newest addition to the rat family, and mice were just eating their babies. It was overpopulated in the tank. No food, no water. I had the BEST experience. The staff was so friendly and helpful on the grooming side and in the store. Considering I went in with two dogs who were a handful, several members of the staff asked if I needed help finding anything. Not only did they carry the food to the register but also to my car. I've shopped at many pet stores and never had this level of service. Both dogs got their nails cut and had two staff members hold and trim their nails. They spoke to them making them feel relaxed and comfortable. I will definitely return even though it's a long drive!! read more

My wife and I stopped in to look at their fish selection, but noticed dogs for sale off to one side at the back of the store. It might be because I'm new to the US, but I've never seen pet store animals in such appalling conditions as the dogs for sale at this store. Wire bottomed cages, with squares big enough to make it difficult for a smaller-pawed breed to even walk on them, and no toys or socialization with other dogs. (During our visit we didn't see any towels for them either, unlike the one pictured). Sincere thanks to the Yelper who took the pictures: I wish I'd taken some too. We were so shocked that we honestly considered purchasing a dog just to rescue it - until we saw the price: $2000. This place (and the puppy mills they undoubtedly purchase from) is pure animal exploitation. The first thing I did when we got home was take a quick look at Delaware's animal cruelty web page. This sort of thing would never fly in Canada, the UK, or in states that have improved animal cruelty legislation (like MD). We shop at PET Kare II often, but our recent visit has me considering finding another location to shop our pets needs. Cashier was being rude screaming across the front end of the store at my disabled brother in law. He must have reached into the Guinea pig cage. I apologized and made a subtle suggestion they should put the bright yellow signs on the cages of live animals and he probably would have attempted to reach in the cage. She rudely Said " there is signs everywhere in that section". I explain to her that there was signs on all the cages That had no pets in them and The cages that were with no signs are low and inviting for people to want to reach in and pet the Guinea pigs and rabbits. So After my transaction she stomped away I requested a bag she sighed loudly and gave me a bag. I turned to my brother-in-law said "well she's pleasant", she felt the need to comment back and I approached her and asked her what her name was she ignored me, I asked her again I said "are you going to give me your name" she said "no". So I walked over to the managers office and spoke to them. The rude cashiers name is Amber, Amber will be the reason why small businesses don't make it. I spend thousands of dollars a year at Pet Kare II and have no problem going else where to take care of my pets needs. My husband and I do our best to support local small businesses. Picked out a dog and visited with him twice, fully aware he may be gone when we decided. But he wasn't .. my husband called this morning and asked if they could hold the dog we wanted.. that I could be there after work by 2pm. The girl agreed to hold him til 2:30. My husband offered to pay for him over the phone but she said they don't take phone payment. we were super happy and excited all day! I got to PetKare by 2pm, only to find out that girl sold the dog we had on hold! Apparently holding the dog is not their policy and she shouldn't have done that, BUT THEY DID! They put a hold sign on him and She should have kept her word! Especially since we had offered to pay! And she had the nerve to leave before I got there so the nice associate , Mark, had to make her excuses! the manager said they tried to call us but there are no calls or messages from them. Had bad luck ourselves. Purchased a kitten, came home with fleas. Took her to be de-flead and was told that she was underweight and under age. She would have to wait. Six weeks after bringing her home our perfectly healthy 11 year old tortoiseshell mysteriously died? We went back to complain about the kitten's health and was blown off entirely. Today on 1/1/20 I purchased a Male Yorkie puppy that I had on hold for 4 days. I had previously seen the puppy and he was some what playful. BUT after 3 hours of having the puppy home he was showing some concerning signs. Respiratory issues, vomiting/diarrhea. I immediately took him to the emergency veterinarian where I was told he had pneumonia AND parvovirus!! The vet told me she has never seen a puppy with both health issues, & that his chances of surviving where very slim. I was so heartbroken!! I had been waiting to give this fur baby a forever home. I initially paid almost 1,300$ for this puppy. When my boyfriend called back to the store the lady was very nasty & clearly did not care that she had sold me a sick dog let alone that this puppy had been neglected. In her own words "the puppy was not THAT sick when we left." She insisted that we should bring the puppy back because they were not going to pay for him to be admitted to the vet. Overall I did receive my money back but the real issue is these puppies are SICK! And if you are an animal lover like me you will have a hard time letting these puppies suffer. No compassion, as if I was being blamed for the puppies health issues. By the way the vibe in this pet store is SAD!!!!!! All of the animals look so unhappy. And the staff knows. I WILL be reporting this issue. Be the better change is this world and don't support places that are money hungry! Don't support shady breeders or PUPPY MILLS. Let me tell you about my experience at this store. I came here on a Friday afternoon after a long school week, excited to see a bunny that my friend had fallen in love with earlier. I walked in and immediately got a sketchy vibe. When I went to the animals, I was appalled. Bunnies, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice, and hedgehogs were just thrown into glass boxes with a bowl of food and water container. No toys, no treats, no exercise wheels, nothing that an animal needs to be enriched and happy. All the animals were just laying there. While I was petting a guinea pig, I witnessed an employee come and aggressively grab a rat, (or mouse, I am not positive), by the tail and throw it into a cardboard box to be sold. My heart broke for the little creature. I found out that there were dogs at the store and I became excited. I went to the back where they are kept and my heart broke even further. Each dog was kept in a tiny cage, so tiny that each animal had no room to do anything other than lay down. Again, no toys for the animals. Sadness was in every animal's eyes and you could tell that they were miserable. Now when we got to the register so my friend could purchase two items, the same employee who aggressively grabbed the rat rung us up. While she was ringing us up, she just continued to have a separate conversation with her coworker (rude!). In this conversation (while ringing us up) she said to him "I wish I could break your shins and shatter you" (uhhhhhh???). She then proceeded to not even put the two items that were purchased in a bag for my friend. They have a cool supply of fish, and good prices. I have a fish tank thats been up for a year. I went up and grabbed a few new fish. The fish i was given were not bad looking. I get home put them in (and i never use store water). After a few hours i saw a fish i just bought covered in ick. After 2 days my whole tank was infested. Some of the new fish died within days. The store just gave me advice on crazy was to cure it. I never was refunded or given new fish just told that its common and because the fish were young thats probably why. I had a positive experience at this store. I came in browsing and was impressed that they had a macaw parrot out for customers to feed if they desired to. Browsing around the store I ended up looking at the puppies in the back of the store. I was interested in a Siberian Husky puppy. They let me play with him in one of the the back rooms as I returned several times to see if he was the right fit for me and my 2 cats even putting a hold on it. The staff accommodated me by letting me bring in my cats to interact with the dog and they were very knowledgeable and professional at answering all of my questions. After careful thought I decided not to get the dog. Just then a breeder dropped off a Shetland Sheepdog puppy just 8 weeks old. I came back the next day and played with both dogs separately since I still liked to husky but concluded that the sheepdog fit in with my lifestyle of having cats better as a low prey breed. The following day I came in and luckily the Shetland Sheepdog had not been bought. They even held the dog for me as I went to my hair appointment that day. This was a few months ago and the dog and I are very happy together. He had been given some of his shots. Both the vets that have seen him afterwards said he's very healthy and is well like by all who meet him. He is super intelligent, a quick learner, eager to please and already knows all of the tricks I could possibly teach him at 15.5 weeks old. He's been with me 8 weeks and my little prodigy pup is my life! read more

We purchased a Blue Merle Pomsky puppy in December 2016. When we brought her home she had Kennel Cough and was testing positive with Giardia. Luckily, the vet was able to clear these two things up with a round of treatment. The other issue we have been having with her is uncontrollable diarrhea. We have spent over $1,000 trying to get an official diagnoses with no success to date. In addition, she is blind in one eye and has limited hearing. I really feel like we were mislead in buying a sick dog. The store has refused a refund of any kind to date. It's really disappointing. On another note, my ex-husband, also purchased a Blue Pitbull puppy at this store in December and recently has been diagnosed with a level 3 heart murmur. The dog is displaying signs of congestive heart failure and can only be saved by a $5,000 heart surgery. I regret ever purchasing a dog from this store. My kids are devastated that both of their dogs at our house and their Dad's house are deathly sick. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. The guinea pigs are kept in small cages or areas that have entirely too many guinea pigs to be considered safe for them. A dozen guinea pigs in a 2x2 area is not safe, and only 1 water bottle and 1 food bowl is not adequate, not to mention barely enough bedding in the bottom of the cage. The guinea pigs that I witnessed today were all fighting and a couple of them had boar glue all over its head, face and body. The staff member told me they were all males which is horrible in itself because males are extremely dominant and will fight in small spaces. They only seem to care about the money they make from the animals they sell and not the animals!!! Please know that animal control was called and they informed me that they have gone out to this pet store over 30 times due to complaints of animal abuse!!!!!! read more

I've seen very bad reviews because people are concerned about the animals conditions, in my experience we have had no problems but I can tell this store needs to be checked by something like a health inspector (I don't know if there are health inspectors for animals but if there isn't there needs to be) anyways, I believe they need to change their ways BUT there are good employees and bad ones. I used to go to this pet store pretty often when I lived in Delaware. They had a pretty nice selection of animals and they always looked to be healthy. They often receive some exotics pets too. My girlfriend bought a sugar glider from them which was healthy and is quite the handful. I have also seen a pot belly pig, chinchillas, and hedge hogs in stock from time to time. They also are one of the only places in the area to buy sugar glider food and they offer pretty competitive prices on most things. If you are looking for a nice alternative to Petco or Pets Smart I would recommend. read more

I haven't had a lot of trouble making them healthy again, but it is something to think about. They don't have a return policy for fish (they do for other animals) but, if you buy a fish and it dies within 7 days, bring it and a separated water sample from your tank; they will often let you exchange your fish if your water is clean. read more

I used to adore this pet store. The employees were so kind and knowledgeable, but over the course of the years, they have slowly introduced new workers who do not seem as passionate about their jobs. The dogs seem to be puppy mill dogs, and I've heard many stories of people NOT getting the breed of dog which they purchased. We purchased a dog from here who was very sick with pneumonia and kennel cough, and the veterinarian which they are associated with (in order to have vet bills covered) is a massive jerk. Our dog was so sweet and loving, however he most definitely had lived in a crate his entire puppy-hood and ended up dying of an unknown issue at only 2 years old. Definitely adopt or buy your dog elsewhere. read more

Was super surprised at the condition of this establishment and not in a good way. When you first walk in.... it was cool. But as soon as you walk in the back, you see the poor dogs. They don't seem comfortable, there are no blankets or toys. When they poop or pee the shit drops right to a bin at the bottom of the cage. Their prices for the dogs are outrageous. For a Chihuahua it was 2300 something. I asked if it was purebred the lady said yes. But damn i can go to lancaster and definitely get a better deal. She pulled one out by its neck cause the dog to cry out and then continued to almost drop it and catch it by its leg causing the dog to yelp even more! The condition was absolutely disgusting. They shove bunches of mice into cages without adequate care. I popped in after seeing bunnies by the window. I used to have a bunny and wanted to see some. They were not properly cared for. The bunnies should not be by the window as they are extremely temperature sensitive. They had no Timothy hay which is what 80 percent of their diet should be and there was a giant bowl overflowing with pellets. People eat should only be around 5 percent of a bunnies diet. They had no fresh veggies. One of the cages had three bunnies in it which is bad because two of them will bond and one will be completely lonely. If they bond and a person adopts one the bunnies will be devastated and could even die of loneliness. These conditions are absolutely tear jerking. As additionally all the cages are tiny and not adequate to he animals needs. The dogs should not be in a wire bottomed cage. It's bad for their paws and very uncomfortable. Not to mention the cages are tiny. This place needs to be closed down. read more
