I had good luck with them several years ago paying a claim for a different dog. This time, it is stall, stall, stall. They ask for the same material they've already been sent, it's been ridiculous. OK so we've had pet plan for many many years. We have it on our dog and cat. I canceled both policies today. They doubled the premium on our dog insurance from one year to the next. It went from 70 something dollars to 140 something dollars. We have been loyal customers of Petplan for many years and while they had been paying claims other things bothered us too. Seemed like every year they went up on our premiums. Now that our pets are old enough to actually need the insurance we can't afford to have it. What sense does that make. Django has had PetPlan insurance for 13 years and for the first 10 years all we did was pay premiums faithfully and never made a claim. In the last year, he started having some issues. He's recovered and is doing great, but he had a lot of claims. As a result, PetPlan increased his premium by more than $100/month, reduced his coverage dramatically, and urged us by phone to cancel or reduce coverage even more because "he is old". That's how much they care. Audrey is 10 and has had Petplan insurance since she was 12 weeks old. Despite having had almost no claims for the past 10 years and ZERO claims in the past year, Petplan increased her premiums by more than $25 a month for the next year. At renewal, there was a problem on their end processing my payment that I confirmed was corrected the next day, yet 10 days later I received a threatening non-renewal letter saying that if I didn't pay them they would cancel and Audrey would never be able to get insurance from any company for her pre-existing conditions. In August 2015, soon after returning from a wonderful family vacation in Lake Tahoe, Monty injured his spine while playing with our neighbor dog. It killed me to hear his cries...we went to the vet the following day, and he was started on medication...and then he started hemorrhaging under his skin, and then vomited blood. We went through many tests trying to determine what was causing his condition. We saw an internal medicine specialist, and then a neurosurgeon, who fortunately determined that Monty did not need spine surgery. He slowly got better, began playing again and enjoyed going on packwalks. In January of 2016 we adopted a little 'brother' for him, Westin. They bonded immediately and spent hours wrestling and then, snuggling. And then in March, the vomiting started again. He had to be hospitalized, and over the course of weeks and months, we struggled to determine the cause, doing countless tests, trying new food, administering medications. Monty was finally diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He had to be hospitalized again because his nausea could not be controlled at home. He didn't play like he used to, and his walks were shorter, but we did see his condition stabilize. He was on 7 different medications, and a very restricted diet. But since his last hospitalization in late August, we started seeing a tremendous improvement in Monty. He is on a new medication to aid digestion, and we are doing acupuncture...and the chemo therapy has had time to kick in. We have also started to taper the steroids he is on. We are so grateful to have our boy 'back'. He now enjoys an occasional snuggle with Westin, going for walks, and we all recently enjoyed a vacation on the beach with friends. During our September visit to Advanced Veterinary Internal Medicine, our doctor shared with me that if Monty had been any one else's dog, he probably wouldn't still be alive. I told her how grateful we are for her help, but that if we didn't have Pet Plan, I don't know what we would have done. We've incurred more than $15,000 in medical expenses with Monty in the past 15 months, and nearly 80% of that has been reimbursed by Pet Plan. Been with them over 9 years...about a year before covid hit their service began getting bad: long hold times, no call backs, long processing times. This is a long review So the first issue I had with them is that they state they're the most comprehensive insurance out there (they're really really not) then in that same section in their TERMS AND CONDITIONS (I spent the time to read through them ALL) they state that ANY CURABLE PREEXISTING issue (so one would think if this is an issue that can be fixed with one type of treatment one off, they will fix it.. (because that's what curable means) anyways, by that sentence they really mean allergies only???? But no where at all states that "any curable preexisting issue" means "allergies only". THEN also in their terms and conditions, they state that if anything happens during your waiting period (15days) they will cover that too depending what it is (so like emergencies and such would be but a preexisting heart issue wouldn't be... naturally of course this makes sense). But that's also false. Okay so you're probably being super skeptic and hateful rn because who am I to say this. I called them, on multiple occasions and asked exactly what they meant by all of these statements in their very own terms and conditions and the people I worked with said to me "well by that we only mean....." and I'm like.. what??? The vet said he needed surgery, perfect I trust them to know what's up. We have even had a couple in the middle of the night - triggered by like drywall dust or something stupid. Anyways, OBVIOUSLY that's going to stress Taco out, he's always been high strung and with the move I could only imagine what he's thinking. (Btw we moved AFTER I had the insurance so either way this should be no problem). So here we are, new place, new job(I work at an animal hospital now) and so I decide to get taco checked out to try to help him with his anxiety after learning that there's medications for this type of thing. We decide to put him on some medication to help ease his stress. I go to file my claim, thinking no way they will fight with us on this, this JUST started being an issue and there's nothing like this in his history. Anyways it's now been a month since he started the meds and they just emailed me saying they're missing history for him. which, they are not. Do not download the app. It crashes repetitively and definitely don't try to enter a claim on it because it is so poorly designed. If you go online to their website they have a link that says "live chat" but when you complete it, the only button you have as a selection to submit is "send email" and then after submitting there is a message that basically says "we'll get back to you in a few days." How is this a live chat??? The technology and communications with this company is so poor it doesn't even deserve one star. I called their 855-619-1646 and got a Spanish speaking answering service. I was a big fan of Petplan insurance (been a customer for 4 years) until I moved to a new apartment, one town over from my last and changed my address. I was told because of my address change the rate may change - when they calculated my rate change i had a $200 increase in the plan. This was on top of the annual rate increase of $120. I can see a small adjustment but this amount is ridiculous. In the four years I've been a customer I have only had one claim that was paid and that was for about $100. I'm blessed that my pups are healthy but i feel like I'm being ripped off on the price of this plan. read more

I signed all 3 of my pets (dog and 2 cats) up for petplan coverage when they were babies. My male cat had a urinary blockage requiring surgery. It was an expensive surgery and a relief to have it covered. A year later he was diagnosed with large cell lymphoma. The diagnosis and treatment were very costly. It was a relief to have all of his care and medications covered. I received payments often in a few days. I was thankful to have this coverage during an otherwise trying time. I've had PetPlan for a very long time. Over 12 years. I am paying outrageous premiums of $2000 per year. I have a 10 yr old GS and he has arthritis. Recently I sent in a claim for several of his treatments. It was denied not because my deductible isn't paid, not because it isn't a covered treatment not because I haven't paid my premium. Nope! Because I did not send in the claim within 90 days. It was within 6 mos. So, tell me why I'm paying these outrageous premiums AND all of the vet bills for an older dog to have them denied for new reasons every year. It has been my experience with this company, who has gotten worse over time, that they often have their "reasons" for not paying anything. If I were to put that outrageous premium in a savings account I would be so much farther ahead of this game. It's what I recommend you do. I'm cancelling tomorrow as it would be throwing good money after bad to pay anymore premium. I have two other dogs on different insurance. So far it is better but I fear it will also go downhill. For many years, I paid $30, then $40, and eventually $50 a month for this insurance. All the while I thought I should stop it. It seemed like a waste of money, as my cat was very healthy and happy, and I had no intention of prolonging her life unnaturally should she get ill. Then, last month, my beloved cat of almost 14 years suddenly had kidney issues. She stopped eating then drinking and was losing weight. It was heartbreaking to hear this condition would take her life sooner or later. Because I had this insurance, I decided to give her the best treatment possible, including a 3-day hospital stay. I was able to keep her alive only another month, but it was a month I will never forget. I spent every minute giving her the most love and tenderness I could. She know in my heart I gave her the best chance at a longer life. And when I knew it the fight was over, i was able to have her pass in her home, laying on my chest, her favorite place in the world. Madison was euthanized and passed peacefully purring with a smile on her face as I petted her. i wish I could say PetPlan covered everything, but they did not cover the home-visit euthanasia or some of the food, and even excluded some old the blood work due to a previous condition. Still out of a whopping $5315 it cost to give Madison the best chance at life and most comfortable passing possible, they paid $3056, pretty quickly too. In the end, they probably paid back all the premiums they collected, so it was likely a break-even for them. But from my end, the last month with Madison was well worth the $2000 out of pocket and the years of premiums. PetPlan took the brunt of it off. A more lingering condition could have cost upwards of $10,000 - in which case, they would have quickly gone beyond the money they collected. This may sound like a mixed review, but it is not. If you love your pet, you may very well find yourself in the same situation as I, or worse. Pet care is extremely expensive when you are trying to save their life. if you are afraid you will not be able to bear that cost, and want the best for your pet, then it is worth the monthly payments to have the security in knowing you can make the best choices possible - with only your pet's needs in mind. read more

If you're thinking about using Petplan...STEER CLEAR. If your experience is anything like mine, you'll faithfully pay your premiums only to be denied when you submit your claim. Here's my story: My dog had surgery, which was around $1,000. I told Petplan before the surgery the name of the clinic and the date that my dog (Champ) was having surgery. After about a month, I didn't hear anything from Petplan, so I called them to see what was going on. They told me that I needed to contact the clinic and request the records. I thought it was strange that they didn't do that themselves or inform me that they need additional information. So I thought, no big deal. Maybe it was an oversight. So, I called the clinic and asked them to send the records to Petplan. When I called Petplan back to ensure that they had received Champ's surgery records, I was then told that they would need his medical records for the past two years. Once again, that was something I felt Petplan should be requesting, not me. So I had to take more time out of my schedule to call the clinic again and request the additional records. I made sure that the clinic had sent the records to Petplan. After going several days without hearing anything from Petplan, I called them again. At that point, I learned that Petplan had denied my claim because of "pre-existing" conditions. I looked through the records and the "pre-existing" conditions that they claim were not anywhere to be found. The reason I purchased the policy was to protect Champ from any medical issues that might arise. However, the exact opposite happened. Petplan has not only asserted that they will not cover Champ's surgery, but they have also given me the run-around throughout the process. I wasted my time following up and collecting medical records. And I wasted my money by paying premiums, only to be denied. So I have a $1,000 surgery that not covered and I'm further in the hole for the hundreds of dollars I paid to Petplan. I cancelled my Petplan "insurance policy" that day. I worked for a veterinarian many years and recommended Petplan. After purchasing this for my own dog, I now regret giving them a good referral. My now 3 year old dog had a physical just after I adopted him at the age of 1. At that time the doctor noted that he had MINIMAL dental calculus. Because of this note, his recent dental/tooth extraction claim was denied due to it being a preexisting condition. According to the representatives, if the word calculus shows up in the record prior to getting the insurance, the mouth will not be covered ever. WOW!! 2 1/2 stars!! I wish I did my HW and took look at the YELP reviews!!! I would stay away from this pet insurance company! My claim went in on November 6th for my dog's ear infection. It clearly says if there are any documents we need, you will be notified. Today nearly a month later, I called for the third time regarding my claim and asked why the status hasn't changed. It was assigned to someone weeks ago. The manager, who was not accommodating at all, said that's because they needed two years of his vert medical records. Most of it was actually listed on one of the forms I sent has his paperwork dating back to 2018, when we got the puppy. It would have been fine if they needed this paperwork, but how about the person assigned to ask for it??? I called today to complain, and that's how I found out. In the meantime, I have a friend with a different pet insurance company who was reimbursed within 14 days for any claim she has ever made. One claim was for emergency spleen surgery, and she was reimbursed $3000 in 14 days. An ear infection isn't rocket science and should by no means take this long. They are a typical scamming insurance company; they will take your money every month, and when you file one little claim, they take forever or will ask for every kind of paperwork to hopefully not pay. We are getting a new puppy this week, so I canceled my insurance today and absolutely don't want their money for the claim at this point!! They can keep their money! We have multiple pets and PetPlan has covered the various emergencies that have popped up over the years. I am also part of a pet rescue, and I generally recommend them to new adopters. My advice is to read through the policy thoroughly- there are things they will cover and there are things that are not covered (e.g. pre-existing conditions). It's not as confusing as human insurance, and if you pay attention to the policy details, you won't be hit with any surprises. It's really easy to submit claims- they have a phone app so you can just take a picture of your receipts. You will need to submit vet records with any claim, but often your vet does this for you, if PetPlan asks them to send records. You can also just ask your vet for a copy of the records when you check out, and take photos and submit them with the receipt using the app. PetPlan most recently helped me pay for a major emergency surgery for one of my dogs who has a liver condition. We would not have been able to afford to treat him without the security of having PetPlan's financial backing. His vet bills have totaled more than my car is worth and would have financially destroyed me. Other things they've covered for us include treating my cat's stroke, a diabetes diagnostic test for the same animal, the ongoing costs of caring for my dog's malformed liver, all the investigative work that led to that diagnosis: multiple, expensive lab tests, ultrasounds, an exploratory surgery following an emergency room visit, 10 days of hospitalization, another ER trip after being home for a day... the list goes on for this poor guy, but he has managed to pull through and is a happy-go-lucky goofy guy these days. I've only rarely had a claim denied- and the oversight was always mine. Last time I was denied, I had submitted something that was a pre-existing condition for one of my cats. Overall, I've had good experiences with PetPlan, and think they're a pretty good idea if you're worried about the costs of a potential pet emergency. read more

I've had petplan insurance for my cat since 2010, with a premium that started at $237.71/year for my 8 year old cat. The premium has increased each year, which I can understand given that my cat is getting older. This week I received a letter telling me that Petplan has changed underwriters and that they have a plan they recommend for me that costs $1740.60/year, for less coverage and a higher deductible. This is double what we were paying last year. With a cat that just turned 15 I am extremely disappointed. I paid into their system for so long with hardly a claim -- 1 for minor surgery related to a tail wound. And now it is going to be very hard to find alternate insurance. (I did find one though, and they charge $88/ month for the same coverage that Petplan would charge me $145/month for. I would be very wary of a company that does not give importance to long time clients. Looking at internet posts they changed underwriters middle of last year, and if they told me then that would have given me more options for insurance because my cat would have been 14 and not 15 years old. These people are horrible. What else is there to say? I wish I had found out about them before I bought the insurance. Do not buy insurance from this company! I didn't consult Yelp or I would have NEVER bought from them. They have raised my dog's insurance from 400$ to $3,200! Scammers! The I used to be able to call them any time of the day or night. Would have been much easier and no headaches dealing with rude incompetent idiots. This company has gone downhill so much it should be reported to the better business bureau. What scam artists these guys are! My dog has been with this company for ten years and every year I cringe at what the increase in premium will be. Use your money more wisely. You would have more luck either setting fire to it or going to a casino and gambling it away. They have cut so far back in customer service but they are VERY happy to take your money! Once you sign up with them it is almost impossible to switch to another company. This is the ONLY reason I have stayed with them as they are holding me hostage. I WAS happy with Pet Plan but the premium has nearly doubled in over a year. This is terrible! Puppy turned 6 and now the premium went from under 700 to $1300. Not sure how this is legal. Also, you can't switch insurance easily. Keep that in mind. because most places will not pay for "pre-existing" conditions. read more

I originally went to petplan Insurance because they said it didn't matter what the dog's condition was, how many claims you put in a year, there were no limits on any condition so all I had to worry about was one deductible per year. Apparently there are new Underwriters and every condition must meet a deductible, and just imagine what it's like trying to prove that a dog's condition is the same after months of treatment. As far as I'm concerned the only thing that works well with this company is the way they managed to collect their premium every month. You would think after 6 years with a company I wouldn't have to send in the last two years of any dogs vet history especially since they've had no claims in 6 years. I could go on and on but the way I feel right now is I'm paying the premium every month and I don't feel that my dogs are covered well enough and at that point it seems like they're really not covered at all. Overall I am very unhappy with them and I feel like all my payments were for nothing. I am going to get a new insurance and pay a little bit more comforted knowing that my dog's illnesses are not going to be completely out of my pocket. I am going to find a company that has one annual deductible that is unconditional and not worry about having to tie one Veterinary visit to another and hope that something's covered, because if they find one reason not to cover you then it's up to you to prove your case and I'm not a lawyer read more

I have absolutely no complaints about petplan. I've had it for 4 years for my Pom/Chi ( who just recently passed). During the past five months she was hospitalized three times for several days had 2 ultrasounds, a transfusion and multiple blood panel re-checks run, numerous medications and just 2 weeks ago lost her battle. Throughout this entire experience I never once had to pick up the phone and call them regarding any of my submissions. There was a total of 9 claims and I was reimbursed for 80% of all of them. Each claim was also processed in a timely fashion. I would say the key to all of this is to have all your documentation submitted and complete from the get-go which allowed them to process the claim much more quickly. Petplan has been has been pretty amazing with my claims. I have a frenchie who has been insured with them since she was a puppy. Thankfully I didn't have to use it until she turned 7. She got a horrible case of pneumonia and they reimbursed me a very large sum of money and did it incredibly fast. Hopefully they keep this up. In addition i had an amazing experience with their customer service. His name was byron guinyard. He stayed on the phone with me for about an hour going over all my options and was incredibly knowledgable and helpful. Just bought PetPlan for my two rescues. By there very nature runaway rescues have NO previous medical history. My rescue of 3 months needed help for back injury. Right as i filed my first claim a red notice popped up..MUST HAVE 2 YEARS Medical history to file claim! I called "customer service" inquiring about this and they tried to blow me off saying it was up to "underwriting" to decide. I said I will be cancelling because this was not in any of the marketing materials AND its ridiculous because it EXCLUDES most if not ALL rescues. Then i started hearing about preexisting conditions totally excluded! The agent just kept going in circles and not answering me. I have this HORRIBLE treatment with my own healthcare. STAY FAR AWAY...this company is part of the EVIL EMPIRE that is the insurance business! Im cancelling ASAP. read more
