This place and staff was AMAZING. I was looking for a specific conure color and I was 1 hour away. I called they told me they had it and so I drove there and they held it for me. If you're going to lie to customers, at least get all your staff on board with the same lie. Can only hope the turtles have been moved back to that larger tank along the wall. It was appalling seeing that the new owners had shoved them all into a much smaller tank in the middle of the store. It was super off-putting seeing the new owners bash the former ones on social media, after the former ones were so supportive of the new ones. It's equally off-putting seeing the new owners make snarky, passive-aggressive responses anytime someone leaves a negative review. It's really hard to believe their accusations that anyone who left a negative review must have confused their store with another one. We loved the lab-mix we bought here many years ago. He was loveable and was good with kids. He grew to the size of a cocker spaniel. As I remember, they'd taken in the whole litter out of which we picked this one. We noticed the place smelled like a zoo. That didn't bother us probably because we're zoo members. Yes, I know they don't sell dogs and cats anymore. A local ordinance prohibits dog and cat sales. However, one of their competitors hosts dog and cat adoptions from the Humane Society and the Shamrock Society. Pet's Palace is under new ownership, and I am impressed! Major cleaning and renovations have gone on and are still going on. They no longer sell puppies or kittens. Lots of new selection of livestock including frogs, reptiles, uncommon fish, plants/water plants, mudskippers, tarantulas, jumping spiders, centipedes/millipedes, isopods, springtails, feeders of all kinds (frozen rodents, flightless fruit flies, worms, etc.) Prices are VERY reasonable. I've found a lot of things much less expensive than they were. Highly recommend! read more

This place does not seem to know how to take care of animals, especially leopard geckos. My daughter and I went just to view snakes as that was to be our next pet. When we entered the store, the smell was immediately terrible. Leopard geckos were one of the first things we saw in a few enclosures. One poor gecko was missing its tail, had stuck shed, a wound on its head, and had an eye crusted shut with sand stuck in all its wounds. Not only was she in an enclosure with sand for substrate, but she also had crickets that were larger than her head. Crickets that large can bite and make wounds worse. Sand can also lead to obstruction. We have a leopard gecko at home that is treated very well so we are very familiar with leopard gecko care. My daughter and I end up deciding to bring the sweet gecko home. We ask the employee to get her for us and their response is "Are you sure you want her? She was attacked by the other geckos and we're pretty sure there's something wrong with her stomach and she's going to die." We said we still wanted her because we would rather have her die comfortably if she was going to die. They made us pay for her (not full price thank goodness). When we got her home, my daughter immediately put her in a warm bath and worked on cleaning her up. We got her warm and fed her a mealworm. She survived the first day and we decided to feed her notmallytake her to the vet to see if there was anything we could do to make her more comfortable. The vet said she looked perfect (except for the head wound and missing tail which was already growing back). Two and a half weeks later, she's healing and thriving- gained 5 grams. The vet expects her to live a long life. We are so thankful that we rescued her from a place that did not know how to properly care for her. read more

As of 7/1/24 they are under new managment. I stopped in after rescuing a leopard gecko and was very impressed and pleased with the woman who helped me!! She looked at the photos of the setup that came with my rescue and helped me get the extra items I needed. Very knowledgeable and didn't try to sell me crazy extras I didn't need. This place is horrifying, it should be shut down for animal cruelty. I cannot understand how it has so many five star reviews unless it's a scam! It smelled like death in here, there were flies everywhere and the animals were all horribly crowded. There were 14 adult hamsters in one cage with nowhere to hide/burrow, and they were all desperately trying to escape, clawing at the glass. There were birds chewing at the cage bars and frantically chirping. The fish tanks were absolutely filthy and I am sure I saw a few dead fish in the 10 minutes I was in here. They are being reported to the health dept but I am not sure that will do anything. Please do not patronize this place - even the big chains like PetCo and Feeders Supply treat animals more humanely. read more

I have been shopping at Pets Palace since its old location in the Bon Air Shopping Center. It has definitely underwent several changes throughout the years. The owners are fantastic people, and do what they can to help their customers. There have been many times that they have given discounts without asking. The recent turnover in staff as some moved away has definitely made a difference. The new staff are not nowhere near as knowledgeable and 1 of them is just flat rude and inconsiderate and i will walk out if I see them working. Through the years they have been key to helping me keep up with my many styles of fresh water and marine aquariums. As long as you get the right staff, it is a great place. I dont do many other animals but they do seem to have a good selection of others. Plus they have very unique things such as a huge albino pythons, giant turtles, peacocks, goats, and chickens. read more

I looked up recent reviews and decided to make a visit. Called ahead to make sure they had what I was looking for guy that answered was more than helpful and very courteous. Arrived around 7 pm. And was greeted with a may I help you from girl behind counter. She rounded up my fish for pond and took time and effort to select most colorful didn't just randomly dump in bag. Loved the old traditional feel and "smell "of store. Very pleased and thought it was worth countering some of the other reviews. Had been a customer since the early 90's. Understand the current situation with COVID and the issues Pet Palace has had with shoplifters. The owner has install a gate inside the front door that is uninviting. On my last two visits, the owner has been rude to the point I turned around and walked out the door. One visit was to purchase a new aquarium. It's okay Jay, I went to Greentree and spent $1500 there. My last visit / last shopping try was greeted by a "what do you want". Thankfully there are other locally owned fish stores I can spend my disposable income at. My advice to others would be to do the same! read more

I'm a little disappointed in Pet's Palace. I've been going there for a few years. We bought my daughter's snake there in 2013 and have been back every couple months to buy his food, frozen mice. Have picked up a few other things while there, dog treats, hay for the guinea pigs, and some fresh water fish. Well I bought an African frog the other day and he didn't transition well and died a day later. Took it back with receipt and they were very hesitant to even offer me anything but eventually offered for me to purchase another one for half price. I'm just not use to this poor of customer service and it doesn't reflect well for future transactions with this establishment. I will be going elsewhere for my animals needs. read more

I am really confused by the positive reviews. This place was cramped, hot, smelly, and depressing. Animals overcrowded in small containers, sad looking puppies, dusty merchandise piled to the ceiling... Both my kids were disturbed by our visit, to the point that one asked me to never take them to a pet store I haven't checked out on my own first, the other was practically in tears before we left. I've given them fish for free that they resell for profit but I bought a fish from them and it was dead less than 24 hrs after purchase and they would not guarantee their fish. I am all for supporting small/local businesses but this is not one of them. I have many pets ranging from a dog to a frog. I mainly need a cheap and safe option for my pets. Well first thing do NOT get anything live from here. Everything living in that building is on the brink of death. As well as there live mice and rats without a doubt have mites for I have given them 3 chances and each time my snakes have come up with mites. Next up, the staff is so under trained it is sad and they are unbearably rude and disrespectful. I bring my beardies everywhere with me and once I had a worker snatch one off my shoulder!! That is not ok in any situation. For a bit I went there for crickets and it was the same thing every time "100 small crickets" and every time I'd have a new price to pay for them. The seemly manager lady charged me $15 for them where as a young teen worker charged me $10. They need to get their stuff straightened up. This place is a hell hole for all animals. If you know anything about proper animal care, you would be able to walk in and see the issues immediately. The animals that are the worst off are the hamsters. 20+ hamsters are crammed into one 20 gallon tank, left with no stimulation, places to hide, or even a wheel. The hamsters are constantly fighting with each-other due to stress and them being solitary animals. Several hamsters were pregnant, most likely by their siblings/cage mates. Several hamsters were bitten, missing eyes, missing chunks of ear from being harassed by the other hamsters. Petco and Petsmart treats their animals better. My heart truly breaks for every animal there. read more

Wouldn't recommend going here unless you want to be treated poorly by the people working. They don't even know what type of plants they sell/ the prices for them. Definitely go to Sandy's Pet shop instead. Or even Feeder's Supply or Petco. A lot of people may mention the smell but this place is a real pet store it's not like petco or feeder supply meaning it's not for the looks this place has a wide variety of animal care products most of which you can't find at petco and other stores. I personally own a few reptiles and was very impressed with their inventory! Especially the terrariums they had available! Highly recommend if you need a new one. Not to bad of a place. From the outside you may think they don't have much but when you walk in it's like a jungle and rain forest with some puppies and kitties. Good place for snakes. A little pricy but not terrible seeing as in no other pet stores in the area have as much as they do. Staff is nice and knowledgeable. Pets palace does not take proper care of their animals and will tell you the wrong information. I bought from then a few days ago because i felt bad for an axolotl they had. They had him house in a tank FULL of goldfish which is so wrong. When i tried being nice to educate the manager, he told me that the axolotl was fine and they never had any trouble. Now that i have the axolotl, im still working to get him to eat proper food. I could tell when he pooped that he had some trouble in his belly. He was skinny and they even told me a few months ago when i was telling them about my other 4 axolotls that i was not taking proper care of them. They told me that they can climb out of the water so they need a basking area. WHAT? That is so incorrect and the girl obviously didn't know what an axolotl was or what they did then and still tried to educate me. In my opinion, this is the worst pet store you can buy from and i wont be buying from them again. read more

I recently purchased some supplies from this store for a snake I had not taken possession of yet. I ended up getting a different size cage and had to buy more supplies on Sunday when Pet's Palace is closed. On Monday I went to the store with my receipt and my UNUSED merchandise. I was told I could only get in store credit. No returns, even though everything was new and in the original packages. I stated that I would use the credit to buy feeders for my snake and then not shop there in the future. The owner pushed my receipt back at me & told me he was not even going to give me store credit because he didn't like my attitude. I handed him the receipt back, told him I need credit for my NEW items purchased three days ago and it is my perogitive to choose not to patronize a store that does not do returns. He made several more comments as to my attitude then said he would give me credit back to my card "since the relationship is over at this point". About this time his partner...boyfriend...walked up and began making nasty comments to me as well. He then proceeded to follow me to my car, telling me he was going to take down my license plate number...because ???. I told him he was ridiculous, what did he expect me to do? I would honestly NEVER return to his store again. And to be clear I am also gay...I had NO issue with their relationship. To the contrary, I would have been a frequent customer had I been treated with respect. But being treated like a nuisance...thief?...because I mistakenly bought $43 dollars of merchandise I could no longer use and requesting a credit to my card is absurd. They clearly do not understand that bad word of mouth is worth much more than $43. I did not shop around for cheaper products as they seem to think. I simply had to purchase different things in the haste of getting my tank set up to bring the snake home on Sunday. They acted like I was single handedly trying to bring about the demise of their store. How they have supposedly been in business for 50 years??? is beyond me.
