I like this place because they are very helpful, friendly, and informative. I have a pitbull with many food allergies. I've tried so many different dog-food brands and the outcome was always the same. Paw chewing and itchy ears. My first time in this store I was impressed by the staff. They really helped me understand what is in the food, and what's best for my dog breed. They really took the time to help me figure out what's best for my dog. I have been going to this pet store for supplies and grooming for ten years or better. Prices on the goods are reasonable. Grooming has always been a little spotty but today took the cake. I have two old dogs that I bring in when necessary and have for years. About a year ago I had a appointment showed up and was told "sorry your groomer called out sick, were too busy with our own appointments. She should have called you" today I appeared at 12:12 for what I thought was a 12:30 appt and was told "I can't take you now I'm too busy with my appointments and you're late" I said I'm early she informed me I was 15 min late. They don't take anyone who's 15 min late. I honestly thought she was kidding. Long story shortened after years of being loyal to Pets Plus Jess dismissed me. I said I want to talk to the manager and was directed to someone who said there was nothing she could do for me. Asked for the owners phone number and was given another stores number. Called gave them the story and they gave me another number. I called and asked for Mark (supposedly an owner) and had to leave a message. No sign posted about late arrivals. My dogs have had to wait a hour or more regularly for other dogs to get done. Jess was not even supposed to groom them I always have someone else do it because she has nicked their ears and the quick on their nails so I have been having someone else do it. I called several other grooming places and asked about a 15 min cut off and they laughed at turning down a long term paying customer. Read and do what you want with the info. Apparently Pets Plus doesn't care about their customers and allow their employees to turn away business. read more

AND I give it 2 stars because actually the Nutro (fancy schmanzy organic dog food brand) is actually a good $8 cheaper here than at Petsmart. I would never ever buy snacks or things of that nature, just the dog food and run. I also can never hate a place that has cute puppies to look at as you shop. read more

This store is not great, but it's not bad. The dogs and cats seemed in good health and all had water. Most puppies were playing with toys, which is always a good sign of being healthy and happy. Perhaps because of the few rabbits they have in the entrance, the store smells really strong, almost like being in a farm... I was there hunting for a good deal in the fish tank section and there again the smell was pretty strong. I saw a lot of dead fish being picked by an employee that seemed very knowledgeable and willing to help. In salt or fresh water, their fish selection is very good, and their prices were more interesting, if I compare with petsmart. Overall the store has a lot of choices on every category, but could use a good cleaning. read more

Went into the store earlier today to see if I could get some already established biological filters or something that would cycle my new fish tank faster. If you look at the freshwater fish, 80% of the tanks have dead fish, fish that are eating dead fish, fish that are eating alive fish or fish that shouldn't belong in another tank, also meaning there's rainbow sharks in with crabs and crabs barely need water. I love my fish and my fish have been well taken care of so far. It's sad to see them go through that since they aren't clearly cared for. Also, I got charged $14.99 for a rock that has moss on it? If you exit the building, be sure to watch out for dog poo on the carpet as you leave... smh. read more

If you want fish and fish supplies, this is the place to go! We have purchased an arowana, a flowerhorn and most recently pea puffer (dwarf puffer fish). The fish we healthy and clean, eyes clear, vibrant colors and good appetites! We wanted special fish and Mark ordered them for us, Wayne was very knowledgeable about what plants and substrate we needed and Eric and Tiffany are always awesome whenever we need anything from our 5 gallon to our 35, 50 or 200 gallon tanks. You will appreciate the knowledgeable and friendly service as well as the prices. We go no place else for any of our aquatic needs! They also give discounts to military, fire and police. We don't qualify for any of those, but nice to know that they support those who protect us. read more

First time checking out this store. If you are into fish, Mark is getting in some nice ones. It's rare to find nice Wild Discus but he had some. He also had a few other species that I've never seen offered before. Mark (the owner) was great to talk to and he knows his stuff when it comes to fish. I'll continue to watch his videos on YouTube and will come back when he gets some Wild Heckel Discus in stock. read more

I go to this store often for my dog, I used to honestly love this store, but now I'm second guessing whether I do. First off, when I entered the store I looked over at the Guinea pigs, and rabbit enclosures and the conditions were horrible, the Guinea pig's water was filled with paper from the bottom of the cage. The rabbits also didn't even have a water bowl, instead they use those bottle things with the metal, which dehydrates the rabbits. They also didn't even have hay, which is very important to a rabbits diet. Two of the workers didn't even know the gender of the rabbits when I asked them, which you can clearly tell when you pick the rabbits up. Which is honestly so disappointing, because none of the staff know anything about the rabbits. There was also a white male worker who seemed like he didn't want to sell a rabbit to me at all, and I believe it's because he assumed that I'm not qualified to own one, when I actually do already own a rabbit. I don't want to call him out because I don't want to waste my time on him, but the workers here need to do better. Why work in a pet store when you clearly don't even know much about the pets?!?! I also had a family member who went to Petsplus a 2-3 day after, because she needed to buy food for her dog and she told me that the same exact white man was talking with other people about the rabbits as if he wanted to sell them. I was very angry by this because he didn't even try talking to me about the rabbits, because when I first came up to speak to him, he didn't even look like he wanted to speak to me. Another thing is that the dog cages had smeared poop all over!!! I saw a worker pass many times and he didn't he try to look or at-least clean the cages. Clearly this store needs to be cleaner because of the conditions of the cages. I also read all of these old reviews under here, and I can clearly tell that none of these things have been fixed. A pet shop that sells puppies?! You don't see that anymore (at least, in central nj)! Pets Plus not only sells dogs, but a variety of other animals too. I mostly go to buy fish and they have great deals. For their anniversary, all fish were half off (plus they had soft pretzels and soda cans for free)! And I just got a coupon in the mail for buy one fish, get the second one for one cent! Definitely going this week to take advantage of that offer. read more

The grooming salon that is located in the Pets Plus in Lawrenceville, NJ is one place that i would not go to with any of my pets anymore due to their 'cash first, friendliness later' attitude. My dog has gone there for awhile and when he passed away in 2013, they never even sent a card, called my telephone number to offer their condolences on behalf of me being a great tipping customer and overall continued customer. That alone tells me that even though they smile in your face to get your money, they really don't care about you or your precious pets. The staff there is mostly her family members and often a 'student' who is doing work their helping out. They look at you as if you are an alien and are not very friendly when you are inside of the establishment. The owner also works as an real estate agent and when i went inside of her other establishment, she acted as if she didn't know me which again tells me that although business owners do business with minority customers, they would really not be bothered with them otherwise and that is sad. After hours behavior speaks a lot about people in general, when business owners aren't giving minorities their 'politician smile' after hours, it makes me not want to be bothered with them during business hours. Be yourself, if you dislike minorities, act like it and don't be phony because many of us can see the true person behind that planted smile and extended hand as long as money is being exchanged. read more

I wish they would stop selling animals from this store. People are looking now to adopt animals or to meet with reputable breeders. It is obvious that these animals are overpriced, and the conditions are not healthy. They have some good natural food items here, but overall, this store is a throwback to the pet stores in the malls in the 1980's. We know better now, so we should do better. read more

I wish they would hire people that had some sort of knowledge about the animals. The rabbits had NO hay , and where in a clear glass all together mixed genders. The ferrets glass stink , and had many flies inside of it with once again NO FOOD. I brought a rabbit from there and a week later she passed away. The employees doesn't know anything about the animals or breed. I asked one of the workers what kind of rabbit is this breed and he said " a regular basic rabbit " I smiled and calmly walked away as I knew it was a lion head Flemish mix. They don't know the age , or much about the pets. I would say save your money but I rather you spend your money and buy a rabbit and give it a loving home instead of this dump. I have been taking my dog here for 8 years for grooming. I made an appointment and showed up there where I was told they had no time for my dog after I had scheduled the appointment 3 days prior. I have stopped over a yr ago purchasing from pets plus, primarily because of a rainbow hair colored employee who is both rude, and inaccurate in her assessments of store inventory and one very important piece of Machinery, the reverse osmosis water machine. Aggravating to say the least, but when an employee purchases all of the most popular flavor of an expensive, and not carried by many stores product anyhow, it makes you not want to waste your time going, as they won't have the product anyway. When I told them about the problem and asked that they order more of the cat food the manager said he'd order more and CALL me when it arrived. Neither ever happened. The store has been disorganized for a long time, but the above mentioned employee's employment seems to correlate with even worse service and lack of inventory. I suggest you go to Dog's and Cat's Rule if you want to be sure the product you need will be available.. And you'll be treated with dignity and pleasantness. read more

Yeah, most pet stores don't sell puppies anymore because it is well known that most pet-store dogs come from puppy mills AND there are thousands of dogs waiting to be adopted. I was disgusted with this store and the way they kept these tiny puppies in small cages under bright lights all day. It was awful. I've asked the manager why they don't do adoption events rather than sell animals - he didn't have an answer, but it's obvious - they want to make money. Don't be a part of the problem by buying dogs from pet shops. There are hundreds of great rescues who will help you find the perfect dog/puppy for you. AND it's usually much more affordable than buying a dog. I like to buy from pet stores that support adoption. read more

First off. I adopted a puppy through pets plus, she is a loving adorable puppy who I felt I needed to save from there. I filled out the forms for the adoption, they spoke to my vet and landlord and got great reviews of me being a pet owner and they told me I was able to take her home in 2 weeks to get cleared by the vet and then she can come as long as she's not sick. Mind you! That I have a 9 year old dog already that they knew about. He's always been in great health because of the way I take care of my animals. So I go to pick up my pup and everything's fine until the first night when she starts coughing and gagging all night. Take her to the vet immediately, turns out she has kennel cough and a parasite called coccidia in her intestines. So therefore I spent, 450$ adopting her and then an additional almost 400$ in very bills in the first week of having her! My vets were horrified and told me that there isn't anyway that she could have gotten it other then from being in that store. Second, I went and called multiple times and even went in person all that week to speak to someone about getting my vet bills paid for because it was only 4 days of having her, and I was given the run around by this poor excuse of a staff, no one helped me at all. Promising me I would speak to someone who would never call until I literally flipped out and demanded that I speak to the manger that moment. Clearly the staff just doesn't give a hoot about the clients cause no one even made it clear to the manger there was an issue at all. Third, the only helpful and calming person in this situation who was great help and awesome in every way possible was JOHN the manger. He was reassuring and help me and my husband in every single way once I finally got in touch with him. He was the only commendable thing about this experience. John deserves a raise and a high position. And he got our vet bills paid for. And MARK was also extremely helpful only person who got me in touch with john finally. Basically if your gonna adopt a pet from this place make sure your wallets are fat cause it's gonna be more then just adopting a puppy, your gonna take a risk of them being sick and dealing with nonsense. I just have to say I'm so happy I got my puppy out of there so she can be happy and have a family who takes care of her. read more

So not happy with this establishment. New to the area and loving owner of more than one pet, I was excited about the convenient location. With regret, each time I visit there is sn issue with service,value, and price. Since my pets are adopted from a animal resue; I often agree to make a round up donation towards the rescue of other animals. The cashier rounded the transaction on a $14.00 product to $20.00. Unbelievable. I felt guilty by saying I didn't mean that much.:( During the recent renovation a particular item was $7.99. I learned during todays visit $12.99 is the current price. Unbelievable. Made me wonder if they sold old items and did not re-stock until renovation was complete like a fire sale.Today I chose to Google other pet stores in the area and purchased the $7.99 item at Precious Pets for $7.99. I'm willing to travel a little further to avoid the inconsistent practices. I hope this location gets better but buyers beware. read more

Adopted a dog last Saturday and the next day I saw worms in it's poop. Took a sample to the vet and find out my pup also has giardia. Supposedly , for an extra cost, the dog is examined by a vet and poop samples are checked before adoption. Either it was not done or I suspect incompetence. Now they refuse to help with all the vet and medication fees I am now subjected to. I have noticed the same posted for other pet plus stores so I think there is a problem Be cautious adopting here and there other locations. read more

I come here some times because it's convenient, but it's my least favorite pet shop. Literally ever. My main issue with the place is the condition of the animals. I've seen heavily soiled cages many times, and their rabbis and Guinea pigs are often injured. I've even seen animals with no food or water from time to time, I've also received sick feeder rats with scabby tails and cloudy eyes, and several people I know who frequently fed their snakes with this stores rats all had ill snakes a the same time, and don't even get me started on the puppies. If you think it's okay to buy a dog from here, you have NO BUSINESS owning a dog! On top of the issues with the animal conditions the prices are inconsistent, and you have to watch to make sure you're actually getting stuff for the listed price, especially if it's on sale. One thing good thing that I can say is that the staff is friendly and if you mention any issues they'll usually take care of them pretty quickly. read more

ALY G: The dog was in your care for less than one week and since we placed a deposit on the dog the day after it arrived, it was not allowed to be handled by customers for almost the entire week. Yes, two options were proposed and neither one of them were acted upon. As a matter of fact, after these two options were discussed, I couldn't even receive a call back to begin implementing a plan as promosed. I have texts to confirm this. The commitments were never honored. Further, I'm very happy the dog was fostered by a gentleman and seems well adjusted. For the record we returned the pup Tuesday evening and you wrote your response Thursday morning meaning the dog was in this person's care for about 24 hours. I adopted a puppy on 7/11/18. Prior to paying her adoption fee I was told see was fixed and up to date with vaccines. I paid the fee and went to finalize paperwork where I was then informed she was not fixed. I was told not to worry and that the store would call Dawn the adoption coordinator who would get me an appt with their vet for the puppy to be spayed at no expense to me as it is included in the adoption fee. It is now over a week later and every day I call the store, the vet, and the adoption coordinator and either get no answer or get told I will be called back later that day or the next day. It seems that tomorrow never comes. I can't help but feel I've been getting the run around. The web site clearly advertises that pets come fixed. While I love our new family member I can't help but feel like now that they have the money they aren't going to get her fixed through their vet. I have NEVER had to wait over a week to schedule a vet appointment. I've made well over 20 phone calls at this point and every time its the same story. "Well call you back." I have made a compliant to consumer affairs and have contacted the humane society and will be going to the dept of health and vet services and better business bureau next. It's unacceptable that it has taken over a week and I have yet to get a vet appointment. read more

They sold me a pregnant guinea pig! I am really really pissed off. The employee there had no clue about any of the animals there. She had 20 guinea pigs in one cage, didn't even know their ages and apparently mix genders. I figured since MOST pet stores separate the pigs by gender this one would too. I bought a tiny little guinea pig there she didn't look pregnant then. now 7 weeks later she is as huge as a basketball and my vet has informed me she is pregnant! I cannot believe they cant even tell the genders with their animals. Its easy to figure out. If it has balls its a boy, if not its a girl. They cant even figure that shit out. The reason this makes me pissed is because female guinea pigs and their babies have a 20% death rate in a pregnancy. I bought this animal for my children and now I gotta worry if she is gonna die in front of my kids cause the death rate is so high. not to mention that I have no experience in guinea pig birth. So now I have to care for pups and worry about their and mommys health as well. Not to mention the employee there stated guinea pigs shouldn't be in pairs. I went into a petsmart in pa and the employee there told me they do better in pairs! I researched this and its true! I used to work in a pet store. In my training they taught use animal care, and how to care for the animals, what to do, what not to do, what type of vitamins they need etc. Apparently pets plus DOES NOT train their employees in pet care which is awful! I should be able to ask an associate there about the animals and they should at least have a piece of knowledge. I guarantee u all those females in that cage at that store are now pregnant! im warning everyone out there that pets plus doesn't separate their guinea pigs by gender and u will walk out with a pregnant pig! This is gonna cost me a fortune in pet care! ultrasounds, possibly needing a C-section for her birth if theres complications, money to fork out in case mom has trouble nursing and I have to hand feed. I don't mind taking my pets to the vet in fact I do it with every pet I have, the reason I have a problem with this is because I walked in to get a NON pregnant guinea pig and walked out with a pregnant one. Not only did I not get what I asked for, but because they cant even get the guinea pigs genders right and separate them, I have all this crap I gotta deal with. Not to mention I wont be the only one with a pregnant pig! I guarantee theres a ton of females in their pregnant, and now when pet buyers take those females home they are gonna pay up the ass for vet bills in case of complications with birth, and all the other stuff they gotta get. fork out money for a bigger cage, possibly buy a milk supplement in case mom has trouble nursing, vet checks, not to mention having to find homes for all these poor pigs because I know that guinea pigs have a lot in a litter and no owner can keep up with all the babies. Im lucky my neighbor wants one, im keeping one, and the rest I gotta put them up for sale somewhere and if no one wants them, im gonna be stuck taking care all these guineas when I only want one in the first place. in addition doing animal adoptions now, they should be learning how to separate animals by gender so their customers don't walk out with a pregnant mom and future babies. if they care so much for their animals, then they should know that separating genders is a MUST in all animals. I will no longer be buying from this place. Petsmart seperates their pigs by gender. That's where I got my guinea pigs little friend. And yes she is a female. I double checked before buying her, so the only contact my pregnant female had with a male was the ones in that cage at pets plus! Her due date has confirmed this. She is 8 weeks along so she was a week pregnant when I got her. petsmart is good and I will be going to them from now on for my guinea pigs needs. NEVER AGAIN WILL I EVER BUY FROM PETS PLUS. We adopted our puppy now name Luna from this branch. Being pro rescue and part of the police/military family we thought it would be a perfect fit seeing as Pets Plus only dealt with rescue animals and gave benefits to police and military families.The employees and store manager were all very helpful and kind but our experience after was all downhill. We were assured that she was "vet-checked" which after 2 intestinal parasites and a skin disease later we found out that meant the vet just did a physical exam. We were put in contact with the adoption manager, Dawn Bateman, who apologized and even admitted that most of the animals will get coccidia and go on treatment as soon as they get there. However no one had informed us of this and there was no record that she was even given medication. After many emails back and forth, it seems like the only thing she wants me to do is sign up for their pet insurance which has many reviews of being a scam as well (https://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/24petwatch-pet-insurance.html). An employee there even admitted that she switched insurances shortly after getting her own dog there. The adoption prices are out of this world but I was okay with paying for them because I was thinking all the animals would be healthy and get the proper treatment. I went into the Pets Plus today after my boyfriend had previously looked at a new shipment of a litter of puppies the day before at this location. When I first asked to see one of the puppies, they said they were not able to bring the puppies out yet because they were rescues and still hadn't been seen by a veterinarian. I understood initially and then hung around to look at the conditions. One of the puppies was lying with its face in its own poop. Another one of the puppies looked like it had some sort of mange on its stomach and paws. And another puppy had an extremely runny nose and wasn't waking easily. I went to the cashier and said something about the puppies, letting them know about the dog lying face first in it's own feces and the mange. Instead of asking which puppies I was talking about, the girl said "No, they don't have mange. They're rescues. They still have to be checked by a vet." Again, I told her of the puppy lying in its own poop, and she said "the kennel girl's here and will check them out." There was absolutely no interest in their welfare. It had been well over 24 hours and these puppies looked EXTREMELY sick. I will be going in again tomorrow to check on them and will be trying to get a hold of someone if they're not checked out by a vet tomorrow. HORRIBLE and DISGUSTING conditions. If you're going to rescue puppies from down south, you get them checked by a vet immediately! You don't let them sit in a glass box in their own feces. read more

First and foremost if I could give this place no stars I'd definitely would. Me and my fiancé came in one afternoon since we are pet lovers and we were heart broken when we saw the cats and dogs. There cages were filthy and the dogs look like they were in terrible pain. We noticed that they were on grates, no bedding, no sheets which undoubtedly had to be uncomfortable on their paws. We brought it up to one of the associates and they said they were in the process of getting new kennels, and not having a washer or dryer to clean bedding, sheets etc. Although staff was friendly the dogs were over priced and undernourished. All the dogs seem sick and most of them had diarrhea. One dog in particular was lying down with tears in its eyes and shaking uncontrollably. All in all, the conditions were appauling for dogs to live in. To the owners, please improve the conditions these animals live in, they deserve better than that. read more

BUYER BEWARE - THEY KNOWINGLY SELL INFECTED FISH!!! My 3, 5, & 13 Year olds were very excited to get an aquarium from a neighbor that was moving. They already had some fish including 2 very beautiful and unique fish. We had the Aquarium for a few weeks first in order to get used to having it and then decided we were ready to add some more fish to the family. Pets Plus, being our local pet store, seemed the likely place to go. The kids excitedly picked out some fish they really liked... well within 2 - 3 days many of the fish started to have what looked like white worms growing out of their sides with small forks on the end... I called the store and spoke to their resident "Fish Expert" Mark who claimed he had never heard of anything like that before and needed to see pictures. Being a novice Aquarium owner I was at the time now aware that these were in fact "Anchor Worms" that are actually parasites that infect host fish before growing out of the host fish causing severe damage to them in the process (large bloody looking sores) and then spread eggs throughout your tank infecting other fish as they can. After doing some research and finding out out how common these can be I knew there was no way that a "Fish Expert" could not have known about them (Feel free to google "Anchor Worms"). Between the time I called and the next day when I stopped into the store two of our fish died from just being infested with these things including one of the really large beautiful ones that the kids loved. when I went to the store the next day I was told that Mark (The "Fish Expert") was away on field work or some such. I walked over to their fish section and saw fish in their tanks with the worms growing out of them. After taking pictures, I went to the manager on duty and explained the situation. He was clearly a shift manager and not someone of authority, but was very understanding. What I wanted was the medicine and water treatment products I could use to treat the issue in my tank and really felt that they should have given me those items (Totaling $15) since their negligence was the cause of my aquarium issues, dead fish, and now upset children. The manager tells me that he can't make that call, but would call the owner. After getting off of the phone with the store owner he tells me the owner said to tell me that he's "Sorry, but we can't give away free product". I was really frustrated with them at this point and even the associate at the counter thought it was ridiculous considering that it was clear that their fish infected my entire tank. I really thought I was giving them the benefit of the doubt and allowing them the opportunity to make things right. If that wasn't enough, and I really can't make this stuff up, another family comes in while I am at the counter arguing for the right to have the items for free to inquire about fish they just bought from their the other day... The woman says to the manager "...Yeah... They have these like white things coming out of them with prongs on the end..." My eyes widened... His head sank in a "Oh crap" kind of way... Ultimately I would not get the items for free and paid full price. Even after the associate suggested using a "20%" discount to which he replied that he was told "No." I came back in a couple days later to check their tanks and sure enough they were still selling infected fish. They simply don't care even after knowing they were infected and having multiple customers complain. In the end we lost 7 fish (including now the other really nice one we had) due to the worms, and ensuing treatments on the aquarium to try and get rid of these things. After speaking to someone who actually knows about fish, and the retail sales of fish I was told there was no way that anyone in the industry wouldn't know about the Anchor Worms and that they absolutely should have ceased sales until proper treatment could be administered.
