I have no complaints about the item I received or the workers at this location. My main concern is with the deplorable state of their fish. I went in to pick up an online order of salt today, and the workers were very overrun with customers (line 15 people deep) but were friendly and helpful when we got to the front. As my husband waited in line I walked around with my son and was astonished at the sheer number of dead fish in their tanks and obvious signs of uncleanness in the tanks. One tank seemed to have only 1/4 of the fish alive and other tanks were obvious with several fish in each tank laying dead on the grave, upside down and no gill movement. As a fish tank owner I would absolutely not trust that the fish are in any condition to be brought into a home tank, and I would worry that I would be introducing disease and illness into my tank if I purchased them. For supplies quick and fast, sure I will return. For live animals? No. read more

I just want everyone to know that Deborah and Geneva managers at Petsmart on River Street or really outstanding. I purchased a thunder shirt, and when I got home, the box was empty. Where do I begin...I got my dog a year ago and went here to get all her supplies. There have been so many different negative experiences, I don't even want to think about it. Lots of misinformation from employees. An example: The groomer said that if I get my dog's nails trimmed every two weeks for a while that it will retard nail growth, and I won't have to come in as often afterwards. Wow. I keep trying because it's so close to home, but it always takes much longer than planned, employees seem scarce, or are socializing with each other. Such a shame. read more

I love the energy there & the way the store is laid out...logicaĺly. Above everything it's the employees and staff that are always not only helpful but they know exactly where things are. If there is any kind of line which by the way moves along well, you can watch them groom dogs and to me that's a lot better than staring at the back of someone's head. Instead of fighting the traffic , and spending too much money why not browse around to see what new items they have for your pet. The manager is out on the floor & is impressively knowledgeable. I recently decided to have fish. Unfortunately, very few staff actually knew much about fish or how to care for them. I ended up going back 4 times to get help, return unnecessary merchandise. Be sure to do your research before you go in. They can help you find what you're looking for but will not be able to give you much advice when it comes to troubleshooting tank problems or treating sick fish. It's my humble opinion that there was quite a bit of guessing going on...more than educating. That made it a lot more expensive for me. Like I said, research ahead of time.. They seem to always be out of certain filters & rarely have live plants. PetSmart advertisement is misleading in that while they do have many, many things to choose from, the staff is not as knowledgeable as implied in the ads. All that said, I still stop there for my cats (& the poor remaining fish) several times a month. And I not only find what I need but I meet some pretty cool folks shopping. I always learn something from other shoppers. It's a real treat for me to meet so many other pets. Watching the activities in the dog training center are sometimes hilarious. Sometimes it seems the newcomers & young one's are the ones training their humans. Other times I can't help but wonder what's going on. If you care about your pet and time don't go here. I made an appointment for 9 am and clearly asked what time they would be done? The groomer said 10:30 am which seemed like a long time but I decided to stick around. At 10:30 they still hadn't started on our pet. When I told them I was leaving and taking my dog, they proceeded to get her and start on her puppy trim right away. Well they did and her hair cut was awful. Poor puppy, she can't even go out in public for at least 3-4 weeks until her hair grows. It was completely un-even every where. They only did her front face and nails. All that for $21. Even my wife said, poor dog as soon as I got back home with her. I guess you get what you gefor. Lesson learned, never going back again. read more

We took our little brown Havanese dog into the PetSmart Grooming in San Bernardino for 6 years. They were absolutely amazing there. Always very professional, highly skilled groomers, very friendly and upbeat. Three years ago when we moved to La Selva Beach we were excited to continue the relationship with PetSmart Grooming in Santa Cruz. We have been shocked at the difference in management. We have tried several times to make it work, only to meet one disaster after the next. First, the pricing was not even close to the same we were used to paying and we resigned to the fact we must have been getting some really good deals that we weren't going to get here in Santa Cruz. Second, the quality of the groomers didn't seem near as good. Third, we could never get the same groomer twice if we found one we liked. If we booked the same groomer again they would just switch on us the day of appointment. One day the groomer they switched us to was brand new and nicked her stomach so it was bleeding. We never once got the same groomer. At the other PetSmart we developed relationships with groomers that our dog loved and looked forward to seeing. Definitely not an option here in Santa Cruz. Finally after a couple years of trying to make it work with something going wrong almost every time we gave up on the PetSmart in Santa Cruz. We started taking our dog to other random Groomers in the area or when we visited friends in San Bernardino we would take her to the PetSmart there. That's still her favorite and they still have the same groomers working there. That says a lot!! Recently we decided to give the PetSmart in Santa Cruz one more try. I called them up and made an EXPRESS appointment because that's all she is allowed to have at PetSmart Grooming because she had a seizure about 8 years ago while being groomed. They said they were 6 weeks out because they were low on groomers. Our dog was already getting shaggy but we didn't have any other quick options so decided to go ahead and make the appointment. Two days before the dog's appointment (like only Santa Cruz PetSmart can do) they called with terrible apologies saying they were so low on groomers and would have to cancel our dogs appointment. They said they were canceling 30 dogs and the soonest they could reschedule would be in another month. It was very frustrating but I agreed and reminded the manager she was an EXPRESS and excepted the new appointment for a month later. Today was the day. Our little dog truly looks like a sheep dog her hair is so long. I rearranged my schedule to take her in, then got a flat tire and had to scramble to get that fixed. Anyway, I was there right on time at 2:30pm. I honestly, with fear and trembling, was wondering what could go wrong this time. I went in, told them I was there for Mochas appointment. And sure enough, April said, "That's me, I'll be right there." Hallelujah, I thought, she is finally going to get a hair cut! She came over and put a leash on her and took her behind the counter. I said, how long do you think it will be for the EXPRESS? April's eyes got BIG and she said, "She's not booked for an EXPRESS, and I need to take a break and I have another dog I have to do, I can't do her today!" And immediately hands her back to me. I totally lost it at this point. The manager comes over and says don't be upset because I'll do the dog myself. When I asked? I don't know she says, not today. Very unfriendly manager. I went to the store yesterday with my sister to purchase a fish and a tank. The manger was very rude towards us saying that two out the three fish we were getting would not have enough room to grow in a 40 gallon tank. ( keep in mind the fish was a gold fish and two guppies) she made us leave the two guppies and left with a gold fish. We came back again today to purchase one more gold fish. We asked her nicely if we could purchase one more gold fish. She came at us very rude saying that the fish wouldn't get along in a tank. (All these fish are clumped together in tiny 5 gallon tanks) it felt very rude when all we wanted was one more fish for our other fish. She refused our service after we asked her nicely. Unfortunately I don't recommend this place when management has a young lady here power tripping over the fish department.... Would give zero stars if I could. I love Petsmart. I like to take my huuuuge dog there because it's like Disneyland for him. We stroll around, ok, well here drags me around like a ragdoll, and I let him pick his own toy. He particularly loves terrorizing the parakeets. My daughter and I went in last weekend to adopt a kitten. A third party rescue has their kittens in there and they charge a $150 adoption fee. This includes neutering, first shots and a free check up. You have to either own your home or have a copy of your lease showing you can have pets. Some people balk at the cost, but it not only goes to their costs but also weed out people who adopt on a whim and then abandon the cats when they aren't kittens anymore. We fell in love with two kittens, but I couldn't afford the fees for both. It was really sad because we stayed in there for an hour trying to decide. When the lady who runs the shelter found out that one of the kittens we wanted was a black one, she let me adopt them both for one fee. I guess black kittens (and dogs) are hard to get adopted. She said they just stay there until they become cats and then they are almost impossible to get adopted. I now have a rescued black dog and a rescued black cat so I hope I'm balancing things a little. By the way, they are a no kill shelter so they really need that $150. read more

No explanation they were just closed.This is not the first time I've been disappointed by this Petsmart location. Rude employees, never answering the phone, they suggest to use curbside and when I did that waited for 30 min just for someone to answer the phone. Probably the most knowledgeable petsmart I've been to that know their fish... or maybe it was this one guy who works at the fish department who has like 2 55 gallon tanks in his house and genuinely loves fish. Sales items sells out... FAST. So get good deals if you see it. One of my favorite experiences here was when I was trying to buy bottom feeders and a snail. There was a little girl ahead of me super anxious and I just let her go ahead of me. After about 5-10 minutes of helping her get her fish, he came to help me get 3 ghost shrimps and a water snail. He only charged me for 2 ghost shrimps since I was nice :) That saved me a whole 33cents. yay! What a nice guy. People are very friendly here and I always feel welcome to buy random fish stuff or just browse around and look at the cute dogs. read more

I feel compelled to share my experience of the grooming salon at PetSmart in Santa Cruz as I am so disappointed with their service. I visited the salon on Christmas Eve (12/24/2019) to get my 7-month-old Bichon Frise puppy a nice trim for Christmas, in hopes of freshening up his look for meeting family and taking Christmas photos the next day. The PetSmart groomer (name withheld) ended up shaving my dog's entire body despite my request that she keep his fur long and not cut it too short. I left my puppy with her to run to the bank and during my errand run she called me, claiming that my dog had knots she needed to remove and that it would look uneven if she didn't trim the rest of his fur as well, to which I answered yes, she could trim him as needed to avoid a patchy appearance. However, upon returning to the store I realized there had been a misunderstanding and she had cut way too close to the skin. My dog had had a few small matted spots, but there are grooming tools for removing knots which isolate the knot and remove small discrete sections of fur so as to preserve the surrounding fur. I don't think this groomer knew how to cut long fur - it's easier to shave it all off than to trim/style long fur and shows a lack of skill, as well as laziness and/or overzealousness on her part. This all-over full body shave was totally unnecessary. I asked her to keep the length on his ears, where there were no knots, and she even shaved his ears too. The whole process took around 4 hours and she worked on him for so long that my 5.8-pound puppy was exhausted by the end. When we got home he went straight to the couch and fell asleep immediately, and would not eat or drink water till the next morning; I thought he might be sick and I might need to take him to the vet. I worry that the groomer was overly aggressive with him and hurt his sensitive skin. I had just wanted a light trim as he is still a baby - not for her to remove knots. I feel that this experience has altered my dog's mood and personality. Without his beautiful long fur he is anxious and timid, lost his confidence, and appears tiny, bald, weak and sickly. Now he needs to wear a sweater to stay warm. When visiting family for Christmas he did not interact with my brother's dog the way he used to, and he looked weird in our family Christmas photos. In short, he is not the same and I'm hoping his playful personality and high energy will return in a month or so when his fur grows back. I am so displeased with the grooming salon at PetSmart in Santa Cruz that I have ordered dog grooming supplies from Amazon so I can trim it myself next time. I will never go back. read more

I have been going to this store since we moved her about 8 years ago, and never had much to complain about. I found what I needed, and occasionally (when asking for help), I had a decent experience. Outstanding would be different, but it was okay. Since COVID started, I didn't even try to ask anyone any questions, because it's hard to find someone. And the lines have been getting longer and longer - I understand why a 1-line system is beneficial, as it helps getting everyone checked out the fastest, especially with multiple registers open. However, there usually always was only 1 register open at any time I visited, and last time, I waited in line ~45 minutes. The line went all the way to the very back of the store, and then wrapped around the last shelf. In times when being in enclosed spaces is encouraged to be kept at a minimum, it feels like not much effort on management's side to help move customer flow, and get people in and out fast. Sadly, there are not many pet stores in Santa Cruz that offer the choice PetSmart has - so will likely keep coming in. Please improve the wait-in-line time, it's not really a great customer experience the way it currently is! read more

A young man named Baruk did an outstanding job of grooming Rocky today. In August, Rocky had been unevenly shaved (by another groomer) so deeply that 3 months later the hair has not grown back in areas around his neck and legs. Baruk gave him a 1/2 inch cut all around. The unevenness on Rocky's neck in the photo shows where he still has bald areas. I am very pleased with the professionalism shown by Baruk. read more

April is the worst. She claimed my dog had "matted hair" and that unless I paid additional money for a FURminator shampoo she would not give my dog a bath. 1st of all my dog does not have matted hair, I brushed her the night before and brush her daily. 2nd of all she goes there often and there were other girls there that had bathed her (they said nothing). 3rd my dog has very sensitive skin and cannot use FURminator shampoo. April and PetSmart, we will never come back or buy anything from your store. You guys suck! read more

April is an amazing groomer!!! And her cuts on little dogs always come out amazing! The lady below doesn't know what she's talking about! (Gina B.) Some people like her are to cheap to get the service there dogs need. And I'm sure her dog was matted. and the night before she brushed it was probably the only time she had in awhile, as a last resort to make it appear she upkeeps her dog. Her dog having sensitive skin would be recommend a hypo shampoo (furmenator is hypoallergenic). The groomers at petsmart are very informative and work there because they love dogs and love what they do. They care about making sure your dog is healthy and looks great which is why they make recommendations. If your dog is matted they will let you know because without fixing the Matt's the dog will be in pain. Maybe Gina should have researched for a dog breed with less upkeep so she could be cheap, without it affecting the dog! read more

My pup is fearful of the groomers and the vet, and can be snippy, but in the 8 years I've had him, he's never been turned away for grooming. Perhaps PetSmart should hire people that know how to deal with dogs a little better. I took my 7-year old poodle mix (very curly difficult hair) to be groomed by Corinna yesterday and she did a great job! I'll post a photo to show the before and after of my dog to show her off. Service was great, my dog looks happy to be free of any tangles, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. She let me know that my dog had a bit of a bad reaction to one of her paws being touched and assured me that she inspected every part of her paw and leg to make sure she wasn't wounded. My dog really really REALLY hates having her paws touched most of the time and no vet has ever been able to find anything wrong with her. But it made me feel good to know that she was honest. I was looking at the posted prices on the shelf as I talked to a floor staff member, silently totaling the flea collar ($56) and a two-pack for the cat ($46). When I reached checkout, the total was nearly $180. I questioned the salesperson who told me the prices on the shelf reflected my costs IF I had their "Club Card", that my non-Club Card purchases were a bit higher... I was really in a hurry, paid and left - feeling quite grumpy. When I got home, I realized that the salesperson had sold me a four-pack for the kitty which had doubled the cost for that product. I got grumpy again, as I had specifically requested a two-pack on the floor, and got bait-n-switched at the register. I'm grumpy, did I tell you? read more

Do not ever get fish here! I made the mistake of getting a few tetras and added them in with my betta before I found out you have to quarantine new fish and my beta got severely infected with ich. Upon returning to the store to see their fish knowing what ich looked like, I realized nearly every fish had ich. When I complained to the manager of the fish department katzia she told me with the worst attitude that they're all actually being treated for ich. Later on speaking to the store manager I was given a $50 gift card, but when I came in to get it they were obviously still selling the infected fish. See those little white spots? Absolutely the worst pet store and management I have ever done business with in 25 years . We decided to add to our fish tank after 3 very successful years of having an aquarium . We had 10 fish at the time , some of which were three years old and all had been perfectly fine previous to our pet smart purchase last month. We purchased 7 new fish to add to our freshwater population and immediately the next day fish began dieing ! Even the fish we had for the three previous years. We returned to pet smart with the deceased fish in hand and the managers response was "You cant prove our fish caused this" . Very rude and unprofessional to say the least ????? I found his manner and behavior to be aggressive and defensive. I walked him over one of the tanks two of the purchased and now dead fish came out of the day before and I pointed out that tank now had now had two dead fish floating in it and the other fish in that tank also had a white "mold" or "fungus"on them just the fish they sold us did. It was clearly visible and evident even he admited he saw something growing on the fish in that tank,,,, His only resolve was to replace the deceased fish with more contaminated fish. Is that insane or what ????? Over the past month EVERY SINGLE FISH in our tank has now died there are no more left alive after three years it took one trip to pet smart to totally annihilate our family friends we have cared for for the past three years .. All in all we slowly watched 17 fish die in the past two weeks . All because we purchased 7 fish from pet smart!!!!!!!! There is no doubt in my mind that the fish from pet smart brought with them a terrible fungus and even though it was obvious the manager was still attempting to avoid responsibility and was completely rude and arrogant in avoiding responsibility that he as well as pet smart had in this horrible and sad situation. Corporate greed at its finest . I would encourage everybody to not patronize this store and perhaps by doing so you can save the lives of your current pets by not bring disease into your home . read more

Worst pet grooming place, EVER! We have taken our furry kids here multiple times since moving to Santa Cruz last year. Only time PetSmart Grooming did well was the VERY first time, which was 6 months ago--our furry kids get groomed every 7-8 weeks. Must have been a groomer who knew what he/she were doing because ever since has been a struggle. Always missing something or some excuse why this didn't get done or this couldn't be completed or blaming our furry kid for being "difficult" all the while our furry kids are normally sweet as pie. I will NEVER take our furry babies to PetSmart Grooming EVER again. Wasted money ($50 per dog) and our furry kids obviously hated every moment of being there because both cried, barking, begged to be picked up when we were trying to drop off, panicked with heavy panting because of anxiety, etc. Do yourself a favor--your furry kid deserves better. Your furry kid deserves competence. Your furry kid deserves ONE groomer only not being passed around like a bag of potatoes; & if you want only one groomer per dog, SURPRISE, you pay more! LOL complete ridiculousness when we have been going to pet groomers for 18 years now. You deserve professionalism. You deserve your furry kid not to have to smell cigarette smoking fingers in their faces (most these groomers smoke like freight trains, NO WONDER it takes forever to groom a dog because it's nonstop smoke break after smoke break). When a paying customer complains, groomer immediately gets a store manager (who has ZERO grooming experience) try to resolve the matter. Awesome! I thought it neat that PetSmart (PS) offered free Aquarium water testing so I checked it out! Arrived at PS with a bottle of my Aquarium water and attempted to buy some Red Minnows on Sept 29. The staff I encountered that night was friendly, and my water checked out, but in 1.5 days... half of the Minnows were dead due to a mysterious fungal growth. Luckily there's a 14 day guarantee on the health of fish bought at PS, so I returned that day (Oct 1) with the deceased fish in their PS bag. I was expecting the same customer service, but unfortunately I was helped by Melissa... She came off as being friendly enough, but as soon as I mentioned I was returning the infected Minnows, she went about being rude starting off with a "what did I expect" attitude. I don't know much about these Minnows, except that they can be part of a goldfish community, but she didn't have to be a total b**** about it! She went on, telling me that I should've done my research, and then I would've have known I was buying fish from a "feeder" tank. If I had done my research?! I have 6 Comets that were from a "feeder" tank and they've been living for 4 years! Regardless, I would never feed any fish an unhealthy "feeder." I also hated her take on the return policy! I understand that corporations want proof that you bought a product from their store, but believe it or not... there's other forms of proof of purchase than a receipt. I had the PS bag and my credit card statement at hand, but she went on saying that it didn't prove anything... now let's take a second to do the math here... On the PS bag we have the SKU (proof that these are the Minnows) and amount of fish bought... multiply that by their price, add the CA sales tax, and that equals the number reflected on my credit card statement. No reply from Melissa... then, "Can I help you with anything else?" That ticked me off! Yeah, you can help me by burying my Minnows! Oh wait... nevermind... to you, Mel, they're only "feeders." Rest in peace... I'm definitely not returning to this store, and I'm only going to shop local at "Trop - Aquarium." The family who runs Trop treat you well and knows they're ish about fish. I, and my 6 "feeder" Comets can LIVE WITHOUT free Aquarium water testing, Minnows, and definitely Melissa. read more

It was about 15 min before closing last week, and I ran in for crickets. I got them, and saw a orthopedic dog bed on sale, $90 on sale 30% off. I grabbed it and a few other things and the bill came to $175.... I questioned the large price and asked if they caught the 30% off the $90 bed. Turns out they didn't, but the reason I'm writing this is because it seemed like the end of the world when I mentioned it to the "manager". He wanted to close early, it was 5 til closing, I checked. I like PetSmart! My little dog never shakes when I walk through the door. That's a very good sign!

Our dog waited 4 hours for a shampoo. We always specify that he has allergies and to only use oatmeal non-scented products. We always say "no scents or fragrance of any kind." Our pup came home smelling like cheap disgusting cologne. The whole house smelled toxic and gave me a headache. I called the groomers and was told he was sprayed with something "Berry" which is evidently a dog cologne, the very thing we said NOT to use. We immediately took our dog outside and hosed him down. The scent is very stubborn to remove. We scrubbed him with oatmeal, baking soda and an unscented dog shampoo. He still stinks like grape Koolaid. The groomers are nice and good with dogs but I don't understand why they can't follow a simple request. I suggest that each customer be asked ahead at drop off if they want cologne. If the dog is freshly bathed why would you spray them with chemical fragrance? So frustrating. We won't be returning to Petsmart for grooming. We could have saved the money and our poor dog the 4 hour wait. read more
