I thought it neat that PetSmart (PS) offered free Aquarium water testing so I checked it out! Arrived at PS with a bottle of my Aquarium water and attempted to buy some Red Minnows on Sept 29. The staff I encountered that night was friendly, and my water checked out, but in 1.5 days... half of the Minnows were dead due to a mysterious fungal growth. Luckily there's a 14 day guarantee on the health of fish bought at PS, so I returned that day (Oct 1) with the deceased fish in their PS bag. I was expecting the same customer service, but unfortunately I was helped by Melissa... She came off as being friendly enough, but as soon as I mentioned I was returning the infected Minnows, she went about being rude starting off with a "what did I expect" attitude. I don't know much about these Minnows, except that they can be part of a goldfish community, but she didn't have to be a total b**** about it! She went on, telling me that I should've done my research, and then I would've have known I was buying fish from a "feeder" tank. If I had done my research?! I have 6 Comets that were from a "feeder" tank and they've been living for 4 years! Regardless, I would never feed any fish an unhealthy "feeder." I also hated her take on the return policy! I understand that corporations want proof that you bought a product from their store, but believe it or not... there's other forms of proof of purchase than a receipt. I had the PS bag and my credit card statement at hand, but she went on saying that it didn't prove anything... now let's take a second to do the math here... On the PS bag we have the SKU (proof that these are the Minnows) and amount of fish bought... multiply that by their price, add the CA sales tax, and that equals the number reflected on my credit card statement. No reply from Melissa... then, "Can I help you with anything else?" That ticked me off! Yeah, you can help me by burying my Minnows! Oh wait... nevermind... to you, Mel, they're only "feeders." Rest in peace... I'm definitely not returning to this store, and I'm only going to shop local at "Trop - Aquarium." The family who runs Trop treat you well and knows they're ish about fish. I, and my 6 "feeder" Comets can LIVE WITHOUT free Aquarium water testing, Minnows, and definitely Melissa. read more

It was about 15 min before closing last week, and I ran in for crickets. I got them, and saw a orthopedic dog bed on sale, $90 on sale 30% off. I grabbed it and a few other things and the bill came to $175.... I questioned the large price and asked if they caught the 30% off the $90 bed. Turns out they didn't, but the reason I'm writing this is because it seemed like the end of the world when I mentioned it to the "manager". He wanted to close early, it was 5 til closing, I checked. He reluctantly put his override key in, and looked away like what a pain in the ass.... Fire the manager who looks like he hates it there. I'll get my pet stuff somewhere else. read more

Eeks is right. We had our first grooming appointment scheduled here. The customer service at the grooming counter was horrible and we arrived at 10:20 for a 10:30am appointment and the woman at the front desk actually said I have to 'come back' when my groomer arrives! "um....how about you take my dog and get me set-up and in the system?" so I had to go back to the car with our dog, wait 10 minutes..then when my partner went to walk him back in..they were rude to her and she turned around and brought the dog back in the car... it's all good tho - we are new to Santa Cruz...clearly Pets Smart customer service varies from store to store...I am learning that the local business owners are where it is at in Santa Cruz...bye bye corporate big guns...I'm sticking to the locals where they know how to do it right and treat customers appropriately the first time. read more

My toy poodle puppy Wanpo needed a nail trim and I decided to bring him here because I heard the grooming salon offered a puppy package for $15.99 which includes shampoo, condition, blow dry, nail trim, leg and facial hair trim as well as a belly and booty trim. That's a lot of bang for the buck so I called and scheduled an appointment. The Grooming representative was very friendly and helped me book an appointment. I had to re-schedule it twice because I kept having things come up, but they were very understanding and helped me reschedule to a better time that worked for me. Upon arriving, a very nice lady, whose name started with a K, went through the puppy package again and was very good at explaining what everything was since I have never had my puppy groomed prior to this. She was so gentle with Wanpo and his tail was wagging while she handled him. She gave me a time to come back and when I did, boy was I happy!! Wanpo was sooooooo fluffy and clean!! There was no longer any hair in his eyes and his little feet and legs were extra cute!! His fur was so soft and the blow out was fantastic! He looked like a marshmallow :3 When I brought him home, my boyfriend was shocked after I told him it only cost me $15.99. I am very very very happy with this grooming experience. read more

This is a review for the store: Ben was so helpful to me the other day when I went in. Before coming to Petsmart I went to a highly rated local store and didn't get any help with the problems I've been having with my leopard tortoise. When I walked into Petsmart, Ben approached me and asked me why I was in the store. He has tortoises of his own and gave great advise for taking care of my tortoise! He really helped me out and gave me even more advise on what to do later on when my tortoise is older as well. Petsmart employees really know what they're doing and I'm so thankful to them for helping me out with my first tortoise. read more

We went in the other day just to get a few things for our cats and we saw the fish on sale. We have been wondering if we could get a algae eater with our beta fish so we asked an associate, I think his name was Abram or Abraham, anyways he knew everything we had questions for and showed us to the perfect size fish for what we wanted. It was very refreshing to get that kind of help. If I have any fish questions I will ask him. To bad my cat killed the 2/3 of the algae eaters and scared our beta into suicide but at the very least our shopping experience was great. read more

I agree with so many of the posts I read. This place is definitely a hit or miss. For pet supplies, sure they're great. They have good prices and a good selection. I will never buy fish here! That fish story was very sad. I can't imagine and never really thought of the treatment the reptiles, birds and small rodents endure. I recently adopted a new cat (not from PetSmart!) and wanted her groomed. Not knowing the many other places in Santa Cruz, I inquired. They only have ONE person that does cats and her hours are very unaccommodating to say the least. You say late in the afternoon/evening because I work - does 4:00 work? Hello, didn't you just hear me??? She was also on the phone with a howling dog right next to her. It was such an annoying conversation and the fact that she couldn't have better hours (she claims she works her own hours) just sucks. The store is open late! I wanted to leave this review because based off reviews I was nervous to go here for grooming. BUT I was really happy with the service! I got my Maltipoo groomed here with Ashley and I can't recommend her enough! She asked me about preferences in length, showed examples, asked questions about behavior and health, and was extremely kind! This was the first groomer I took my rescue to and she was very reassuring about his behavior. Side note: We also take our standard poodle here and it's the only groomers he comes out of happy and not with his tail between his legs. BOOK WITH ASHLEY! Also they offer curbside pickup and drop off for your dog due to Covid and you can pay over the app. read more

I go here for my regular pet food/supplies needs and have never had an issue. The store is kept clean, the employees are attentive, and it's always easy to get in and out quickly. If you're looking to adopt a cat/kitten, they have AFRP on-site with plenty to choose from, and they have great volunteers to assist with it all--I got my little guy from here and I HIGHLY recommend going through AFRP; a really good organization. read more

Franchise pet store with good quality items and more expensive than usually mom and pops shop. Occasionally, I stroll down here to check out the fishes they have on the side wall. See what's on sale and make some purchases of tropical fish. I got guppies, snails, ghost shrimp etc... One time, I went there they had baby guppies in the tank and I inquire about it and the guy who work there gave me a good amount and some are growing up big and one or two died. Very nice friendly staff and knowledge about aquarium stuff. Make sure you get one those pet cards so you can get the discounts on the sale items. They also sell variety rodents haha. From hamsters, to these furry things I forgot what they call it. They have birds and I think they have school for dogs and a saloon for dogs. Overall, every kid in the world like going to a pet store and get to check out all the awesome pets in the store. Randomly, you always see other dogs walking around as the owners take the pets go shopping together and you can pet the dogs. The ladies do a good hair cut for a good price here. I just wish my dogs liked it. When I take them to get groomed here they are traumatized for the remainder of the day. I dont know if its how noisy the equipment they use. or the assembly line style or what but its obvious that they are scared to death of this place. after I calm them down they sleep for approx 24 hours following there grooming. I would rather pay a little more and even have lil choppier hair cut too not put my lil guys through that again. read more

I took my two dogs (Cavapoos) to the grooming department at PetSmart, with the specific request for a trim only, and they came back with buzzcuts. No joke, literally cut within a millimeter of their skin. I could have used my clippers at home if I wanted my dogs to look like Mr. Bigglesworth. (You know, the cat from Austin Powers...). One of my dogs in particular, might be the cutest animal walking the face of the planet - that is, until she got a haircut from PetSmart. I honestly thought they brought out the wrong dog from the back room. If she hadn't reacted to me as though I was her owner, I would have sent her back. Fortunately, hair grows back, but they should inform you that they simply provide buzzcuts, so that you can choose whether you want to go somewhere else for an actual grooming. Review regarding tropical fish: I have had planted tropical fish tanks as long as I can remember. My dad's tanks have been healthy and full of fish and plants for over 30 years, I have four tanks at the moment, all of witch have been healthy and beautiful for years too. Two weeks ago a light burned out on one of my tanks. Of course, this happened late, after the fish stores I usually go to were closed and I found myself heading to PetSmart (not so smart a choice as I was about to find out). I went in and checked out the fish on the ay to pick out the bulb. I found some community fish on sale for only $1 and I thought "How can I go wrong?!" But then I remembered my dad's warning about buying fish at pet smart, "they always get sick and die... and then the other (more expensive) fish in your tank may die." Being the frugal fish-lover that I am I bought the fish anyway, along with a bottle of Ich treatment, just in case. I walked out of the store with $5 in fish, and a new light. I went home feeling happy and excited about my new babies. I acclimated them to my water/tank, they got along very well with my other fish. Although they did not show signs of ich when I bought them, they were carrying it, my entire tank got it. I treated the tank as soon as I noticed symptoms, two of the new fish died with in days and 3 bottles of ich treatment later the ich seems to be gone. But the story does not end there, my parrot fish gashed his side itching and has a would and one of the new fish ripped its tail and has some sort of fungus. So now I must treat for that too. Long story short, my $5 in fish has cost me 3 bottles of ich treatment ($22), fungus treatment ($7) and the health of my tank/fish. (What you may not know about PetSmart is that all of the tanks share water and as a result all of the fish are exposed to any diseases carried by other fish there. They treat all the water but unfortunately that did not work. I will NEVER buy fish from PetSmart again.) read more

We have a new family member! I adopted a baby kitten, and was really surprised by the AWESOME selection of kitty supplies here. I have been here many times since I adopted my Havanese in 2009, and was underwhelmed at all things dog at this location of PetSmart. I have gone here anyway on occasion, thinking they had to have increased the stock of high quality dog treats, toys, food, waste bags, shampoo. The only thing I bought here was my dogs name tag for his collar. Well, I am a big fan now that I know how this store meets our needs for all things Cat! read more

Lynsey just did a great job grooming my 10-year-old curmudgeon of a Havanese. He's a rescue and hard to handle, but came out looking great and acting happy. The best part was curbside check-in and pick-up!! They obviously have given a great deal of thought into ensuring the safety of their customers, our pets, and the staff. These times of COVID are so hard for everyone, and I don't go anywhere unless I can do curbside - so thanks goodness Petsmart is perfect with their COVID procedures! I have been taking my Golden Retriever here since he was a puppy. He is 3 now. He has 3 legs and is hard for him to keep his balance without his prosthesis. They always take such good care of him. Had an dog grooming appointment for this morning booked a few weeks ago. Gave them a courtesy call on the way to the appointment to let them know that due to unexpected traffic, we would be a few minutes late. We were told that they were short staffed and overbooked so even if we showed up (even on time), they were going to cancel our appointment. This is a pathetic way to conduct business and is the opposite of great customer service. Petsmart has lost a customer. read more

My objection is not with Petsmart, but with their dysfunctional cat adoption process. We wanted to adopt a cat, so went in on a Saturday. We perused the available cats and found one that we resonated with. We were told we had to wait for the volunteer to arrive at 2:00. When she arrived she had a very proprietary attitude; was reluctant to open the kennel so we could meet the cat. When she finally did, I spent some time with her and we expressed our interest in adopting her. That's when we discovered that we had to show proof that we owned our own home. We didn't have the deed with us, so the volunteer told us we could return on Monday and adopt the cat; that she liked our interaction with her and would make a note that we would return to adopt her. Yesterday was Monday, so we returned with the deed to our house and a cat carrier. There was a long line of folks waiting to adopt, so we queued up at the end of the line and waited for the volunteer to arrive. She began processing applicants. When it was our turn, we told her we'd come to adopt the cat and she then informed us that someone else who'd been there on Saturday was adopting her, and tried to offer us another cat as a concession prize--as though she were selling used cars. Very unsavory experience, and definitely left us with a bad taste in our mouths. We may yet find another cat, but I assure you it won't be through Petsmart adoption services. read more

First off, let me say, that if I could give this location -10 stars, I would. I went in to buy my daughter a pet mouse. She was extremely excited about the idea! So, of course the first place I thought of was Pet Smart. I mean, even the name of the store screams "We're smart about pets" right? WRONG! I approached a woman, I think her name was Adria (sp?). Apparently, she's a manager. Manager?! From what I understand about PetSmart, they don't sell animals for feeding purposes. While I was being helped by this woman, a man approached and said he needed three mice to feed his snake and she had no problem 'dispensing live food' in front of my 5 year old. My daughter was HORRIFIED! I don't know who this woman is, nor did I end up buying a mouse, although I should have because it's probably being digested by something else right now. read more

Unfortunately we had a terrible experience with Carinna at the PetSmart Grooming Salon. She cut our dog's scrotum/private parts area too closely with the razor, resulting in a bleeding cut. This then caused his whole scrotum area to become red and inflamed. We had to take him to the doctor 3 days later for antibiotic cream to prevent a wider infection. Moreover, the grooming itself was poor - there were bald areas where she cut too close next to lighter areas where she left more hair. We will not be using their Pet Grooming services again. read more

We took our dog "Bennie" for grooming at PetsSmart on River St and had a horrible experience. They failed to rinse the soap out of his eyes and he severely ulcerated his pupils on the grate trying to rub the soap out. When I picked him up, both eyes were swollen shut, he was very, very stressed and crying in pain. I was in shock. PetSmart ended up paying over $400 worth of vet bills. Today I was helped by Crystal, who was extremely knowledgeable about the different products. She helped me pick out a healthy alternative for hard treats, as my poor older dog doesn't have many teeth left and can't chew most brands. She found me a raw freeze dried bites product (which my dog LOVES). What a great asset she is for this company and if I had a business I would hire her in an instant! 10/10 customer service, which is necessary in a large store with so many different options. read more

The groomers that work there have no idea what they're doing. Our Yorkies cut should be different from a poodle's cut, a Husky's cut will be different from a golden retrievers cut should be different from a Huskies cut, but all the cuts they're on every dog is always the same. look around there before you leave your dog there and you will see that every dog is getting the same basic cut. I was very disappointed and will not be going back there again. I wanted my dog to walk out of there like the commercial but instead I ended up holding her in my arms hiding her because I was embarrassed of her cut. read more

Ahoy! And let me start by saying we only go here if we didn't make it to Aptos Feed & Supply in time before they close. This store is not properly stocked and always looks like it's about to go out of business. But I digress from the REAL reason I felt moved to write this review... THE "MANAGER" named "Mark" should be FIRED. Period. We went in to buy cat food & litter. On an end cap we saw all these funny Halloween "cat hats" on sale for only $1.74! We giggled and thought of the photos we could post on Facebook with the pirate hat on our cat. Arrrrrr. And for only $1.74? Awesomeness. Let the Facebook antics begin! We check out and I start to walk away and see that we were actually charged $2.99 for this feline buccaneer millinery treat. I step back to the cashier and mention the mistake. She calls the "manager" MARK (I use quotations because his behavior is anything but managerial). He asks me to take him back to the end cap where all the Halloween cat hats were to show me where I got it. I point to the hook that has a label that actually says "Pirate Cat Hat - $1.74". He said, "Well, the SKU doesn't match, it's one number off." I say, "Ummmm, OK......but this is where I got it, and it even says it right here." He says to me, "People move and put items in the wrong areas all the time." I say INSIDE my head, "THOSE BASTARDS! How DARE they put a pirate cat hat on a hook with a tag that says PIRATE CAT HAT!" So I say to him, "Well, this is not a pirate cat hat, then?" He rudely says, "Well, I will do it for you THIS TIME...." This time? THIS TIME? I'm not asking a FAVOR, I'm not trying to SWINDLE you out of $1.25 for a effing PIRATE CAT HAT (this sounds more hilarious every time you say that phrase, BTW) I say to him, "This time? I just want what the tag says, so if this ISN'T the pirate cat hat, then direct me to the one that *IS* and is $1.74." Does he? No. Because he knows that WAS an effing PIRATE CAT HAT for $1.74. He rolls his eyes, let out a long sigh and acts all pissed off and goes back up to the register to give me my $1.25 for the PIRATE CAT HAT, very begrudgingly, making me feel very upset. It turned a pleasant evening into a "fight or flight" feeling in me that I did NOT appreciate. How ridiculous is this? Really, MARK? REALLY? How the Hell did YOU become a "manager" of anything? I am 40 years old and have been a manager myself for retail companies and shame on PetSmart for hiring such a horrid, rude, inexperienced person to deal with the public. We decided we would NEVER step foot in a PetSmart EVER again and I will be writing this review on as many sites as humanly possible, as well as to the company itself. All because of................ do NOT take your pet here to get groomed. Furthermore, do not give them any of your money. I took my healthy 8 month puppy there to be groomed. He came home disoriented. crying and yelping. Did not recognize me or my family. was confused. Kept running and hiding from us. He has never displayed any of this behavior. We took him to our vet. After spending an hour with him she said someone had hit him very hard in the face, and he is in shock. We have no idea how long the neurological effects will last. She ALSO did not charge us and instead sent the Bill to them. Do not risk it. My puppy is still very sick and it has been almost a week. read more

Always had a lovely experience at this store. The groomers do a great job. I have a Pomeranian whom we get cut like "Boo" and she always looks great. I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews on here about the grooming salon, they are fast, friendly, and I've always received quality cuts. =) read more

If I could give PetSmart zero stars, I would. This place is absolutely horrible. Their grooming is pathetic, and their lack of service horrible. I took my poor tiny toy poodle to get groomed and he was treated horribly. He has been groomed since he was very young and is very easy to handle (I brush him about 5 hours a week or more and he sits very still). This particular groomer apparently had been in trouble numerous times, and when I picked him up she kept apologizing and explaining that she was on medication! What?!? You're allowed to use shaving equipment on dogs while on serious medication?! I checked out my poor trembling baby and some of his nails were clipped super short while others weren't even clipped at all - his hair was a miserable patchy affair as well. When I complained to a store manager they took me aside and three people came to talk to me about how they were going to fire this lady and how they just wanted to make a report of the situation, etc. They refunded me the cost - but only on a PetSmart gift card!! (And I don't even buy my dog food there!) The next time I stopped at their groomers (I was going to see if there was someone decent to handle Moses as they assured me someone else could) the same lady was working the counter and complaining and yelling at people very loudly! I now take my baby to Meredith at Tailwagger's, and she does great! They do far more for my little pooch and cost less. They are also a local business and wonderful ladies to support! read more

Racoons punched a hole through our pretty new cat door we purchased from Petsmart. I will grant that they are body building beasts, but I feel like when I spend 60 bucks on a door for my foofies, it's gonna keep out a few hairy demons. We took it back for exchange and got no love. The manager who wears all the trashy eye makeup and has long dark hair must have some serious emotional issues. Not only did she dismiss our request immediately, but she was a total dick in the process. Don't know why I wasn't shopping local. Petsmart can suck it. read more
