We loved Pigeon Mountain, so Petunia's Silver Jalpeno was a welcome sight today. They've been open since mid-2024. Pulled pork has a wonderful smoked flavor. Warm and personable staff. Simple and reasonably-priced sandwiches. Tasty dessert. Wonderful ambience. The chef is acclaimed. I almost asked for a job application, just so I could eat there every day. It's worth the drive. So I fly into Chattanooga and it's my first time ever in Tennessee. My friend (who is in grad school) tells me "I know just the place to take you for your first meal" The Silver Jalapeno. Really? Really? It's an old Winnebago trailer (sorry, not familiar with RV type stuff) and it's sitting on the side of the road. It's been there a while, and you order through a side window. Talk about cool and being local. I ordered the smoked butt BBQ pork sandwich and my friend David W. orders the fish tacos. It was everything you would imagine from a Southern BBQ place... in other words my sandwich was dripping with sauce (and also the drool from my mouth because it was so good). Also, you'd think fish tacos would be odd coming from a place like this, but it too is absolutely to die for. They come with chips and queso dip which, yep, you guessed it, is delish too. I would recommend anyone visiting Chattanooga to stop by here, because from what it seems it's a truly locals place. Petunia herself is really friendly, and of course I had to commend her for the best first Tennessee meal a California boy could ask for. Minus 1 star because of the seating and parking... there isn't really anywhere to sit besides 2 picnic tables under shade, and damn was I not used to the humidity and heat. OK, everybody, THIS is why we have yelp! First a little back story...My family and I always drive to Montgomery, AL during the holidays, and instead of driving all the way down in one day, we stop in the charming city of Chattanooga, TN for a night. So we're about an hour out and I tell my wife to look up someplace to eat on yelp! using my iPhone. It came down to Petunia's and Lamar's (we'll check out your cool wallpaper next year, Lamar!) and Petunia's was closer to our hotel. Let me tell you, unbelievable. I had no idea what to expect as we drove up to, literally, a silver Airstream trailer surrounded by picnic tables and hanging flowers, with a great 70s classic rock soundtrack and drool-inducing smells emanating out of it. As we walked up to the counter (no inside seating) on this unseasonably cold Tennessee night, we were just blown away by the epitome of Southern hospitality that greeted us. Petunia and the girls are just top-notch Southern belles. Always ready with welcoming smiles and laughs no matter where you're from, even a bunch of Yankees from Ohio. Now on to the food...First, the pork butt. WOW! So tender and full of flavor. One of the best, if not THE BEST, I have ever tasted. Then I find out the lady who made it, get this, attended the NY Culinary Institute. Well honey, the cost of tuition paid off because you obviously know what you're doing. We decided to go full throttle and ordered just about everything on the menu. I got the casserole with the pork butt, baked beans, coleslaw, jalapeno corn cake and pickles piled on top of each other. I scarfed this concoction down in about 5 minutes flat. The flavors really blend well together and the jalapneo cake and pickles were a great touch. My son got the bbq wings, and they must've been good, because, even though I told him I would like to sample one, they were gone by the time I got around to them. My wife got the fish tacos, of which I was only allowed one bite. The fish was tender and spiced perfectly, and topped off with a very good sauce and some black beans and cabbage. Finishing off this bountiful feast was a slice of homemade pumpkin pie and a slice of brownie pie, both which were incredible. You got a great thing going on there, ladies! Because Petunia's also offers magnificent southwestern cuisine (the fish tacos and the veggie quesadilla are my favorites), I forget that their BBQ is top of the line. I got a very welcome reminder when we ordered several pounds of smoked pork butt and chicken for my husband's birthday party. Both were excellent, but oh, man. That pork. Like all proper BBQ, it needs no sauce because the flavor is in every slightly sweet and super savory bite. Not only is this the best BBQ in Chattanooga, it is fantastic by any standard. No, they don't do ribs. Doesn't matter. The best ribs in town are nothing compared to this. They offer excellent service, too. We called to order the food just a few days before the party. The owner happened to be on vacation but still bothered to answer her phone and make all the arrangements in a pleasant and speedy fashion. We paid about $6 a head (with baked beans and slaw to boot - both delicious) and had tons of leftovers. Now I remember why the Silver Jalapeno is our must-eat destination for out-of-town visitors. Tried Petunia's in Warehouse Row for lunch. The service was relatively quick and the fish tacos, especially this far from Southern California were excellent. The tacos were grilled nicely with all of the normal fixings. The corn tortillas could have been less thick - I prefer a thinner Baja style corn tortilla - but at least they did not fall apart. The queso and chips were an added bonus. Overall, an excellent spot for lunch if you are downtown. read more

Great cobb salad. The chicken was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The balsamic dressing appears to be homemade and is very good. One small gripe - I wish it had more avacado on the salad, but I get it, there's an avacado shortage right now so they're pricey. read more

This has been one of my favorite spots in town for about ten years, and I'm excited that they're now within walking distance of all the great Southside amenities like the dog park and the Jefferson Heights neighborhood. I wanted to love Petunia's Silver Jalapeno. I really did... I love fish tacos, queso, kitschy-cool decor, and Petunia's has all of those. After all of the yelp reviews and several weeks of bugging my SO to take me here, we finally went. Two orders of fish tacos, one of salsa and chips.... Ick! Fish tacos were absolutely gross. They were cold and slimy (sushi is about the only way I enjoy fish cold), and had some kind of sweet sauce on them. No crispy fish, no yummy fresh pico. The only exciting part of the meal was the free queso and chips that came with the tacos. All in all, we won't be going back. read more

The trailer was closed but a nice lady next door at Raceway sent us to the Warehouse Row downtown where Petunia's has another location. The chile bowls that 3 of us had were great! Meat had a good, smoky flavor and was very tender. The baked beans were slightly sweet with a rich flavor and went great with the other items in the bowl. Cornbread could stand to have been thicker. The slaw in it was creamy and not overpowering with vinegar as a lot of the barbecue places serve. Bring your own soft drinks - their bottle Cokes were the little ones. Tea was refillable though. The one dissenting person in our group who drops it to 4 stars thought his burger was "OK and average" and that their menu was too limited. read more
