Haven't been back to UIC area in couple years and again, not surprised to see another new bar in university village. However, this is place looks like it can stay afloat. Beer selection is above average, good liquor selection, friendly staff, and a great patio / garden area where you can play bags / cornhole. Truly a shame I never even stepped into this bar during my 4.5 years of school at UIC. When I think of bars in this neighborhood, I instantly think of frat dudes and sorority chicks who can't handle their liquor and are so righteously belligerent that they'll disrupt anything that'll stand in their way. Thankfully, this place didn't seem like it was that type of bar. Granted, it's summer and school has been out for these UIC kids for well over a month, but it's still Saturday and students do still live in the vicinity of this area. This bar was pretty calm throughout the few hours I was here, thank God. Hella chill atmosphere there. Just some people relaxing, having nice conversation, watching various sports on the TVs, what more could anyone want in a bar? Plus their menu ain't half bad! Drinks were on point. Great neighborhood joint. Has an old school "dive bar" feel...but in a good way. Friendly staff and a GREAT outdoor patio area (tent during the winter months). Does not serve food but allows you to bring in your own or have it delivered. read more

Good pub in UIC campus and the staff is very friendly. It doesn't provide the food and you may buy food from the nearby pop eyes and pizza.

Had a pretty fun time here. Love the video games at the back. Such a fun time! Drinks could be better though. A bit on the weak side.

I've been to this bar a few times since it opened and I have to say, it's pretty cool! I love the lounge chairs in the patio, very comfortable and I like the fact that you can recline in them! I have seen the previous comments about the bar owners and I must say I disagree with those comments. I have had plenty of family parties at this bar and the owners are nothing but generous to us. They take care of the people they love and the people that respect their bar and other customers. I suggest coming to this bar and getting to know their staff. Ph.D is a neighborhood bar. It's not always crowded and the bartender rotation is always consistent. The bartenders there are always friendly and the patrons are usually from the neighborhood. Making for a very laid back atmosphere. read more

I wish this place existed when I was going to UIC, but when I started there nothing existed south of Roosevelt. Now there's tons to do. Morgan's is now closed, but this little pub is one of many newer bars that fills the gap well. I'm not a beer drinker (*gasp*), but the beer list here is extensive. They also have a beer flight where you can pick 4 from the list to try. The cocktails were tasty and served in a mason jar. Decently priced too. Drinks only for this place, but they have a pretty sweet deal with Connie's Pizza. You can get a discount on your food to have it delivered to the bar. I believe on Tuesdays there is free Connie's for all patrons too, which is like a holy grail deal for college students. There are plenty of places to sit, indoors or outdoors. The patio has a fire pit/smoker, there's a grill (maybe for grilling parties?), and a place to play bags. I came with a group of friends late at night, and service was ok. We were greeted by the waitress who decided to smoke and take our order at the same time (time warp to 1995?), but she was pleasant enough. Definitely a decent place to hang back and grab a drink though. read more

Really great spot in University Village near UIC campus! Decor is nice, staff is very friendly and drinks are great price. Also have a great selection of beers on tap and in bottle. Some really cool perks are that you can bring your own food and they sell cases and sixers of beer. They have Jenga available and darts for those who want to play some games too. Have got to know the bartender Ryan and he's a great guy and very helpful. Also a great patio. They have drink specials everyday which you can't beat. PHDs is pretty much perfect for what I want in a bar. Friendly bartenders, reasonably priced drinks, an excellent (and always changing) draft beer list, excellent patio, cornhole/bags outside, and a laid-back environment. To top it off, it's BYOFood and has a grill outside so you can cook too. This place is great. read more

Finally! An awesome bar right by UIC! It's by far the best one in University Village. I love how the location is right by JST, TBH and MRH. I would always have to walk so far to get to some "okay" bars down Taylor street in Little Italy, but Ph.D Pub has great selections, nice specials, big beer garden and the staff are very friendly. This is a awesome chill spot that has a great craft beer selection. There are plenty of stools to sit in the bar area. If that's not your thing because you have a larger group, they have a nice size sit down area as well as a lounge area in the back of the pub. They also have a great outdoor area where you can play bags. This spot is great whether you are here with a buddy to watch a game, need a place to hang out with friends, or just do some work on your laptop. I really love this place. I first visited for a party here early in the summer and thought it was awesome you could grill and chill on the patio. It definitely lets you create your own summer party atmosphere. So, I suggested to my friend that she have a her bday party here. One of the owners, Marc, was awesome to coordinate things with and we had a great time. Great service and drinks and the grills worked great. Any other day of the week, I'd give 5 stars easily due to the friendliness of the staff, but a recent visit made me bitter. Been here quite a few times and happened upon a waitress that acted more like a patron. While we sat with drinks empty, she made sure her glass was full with her favorite beverage and chatted away while eating her popcorn. We waited the better part of 25 minutes until she returned to ask if we needed anything at which point, I lost my urge to drink and was disappointed. Always had great service here with Alexis who is the bomb and always spunky and another dark curly haired waitress whose name I don't know. I hope management takes these reviews seriously because we've spent quite a bit of time and money there and turned alot of friends onto the bar. Giving this cool little place the review it deserves. Since posting the original review, the terrible waitress has since quit or been fired and unfortunately Alexis has left too, BUT, the waitress who I didn't know her name, it's Ruby and she is amazing. Live in the area so have come here a handful of times. Solid new bar that has a surprisingly local old school bar type vibe. The crowd is very diverse and ranges from college students to middle aged. They have drink specials all week and free Connie's Pizza every Friday for happy hour. There is no kitchen but you can bring in food from wherever you want. Staff has always been friendly and they have some outdoor space on the side. This was a much welcome addition to Maxwell St. area as previous bars seemed to avoid the friendly "local" bar vibe despite that area clearly not being a major Chicago nightlife destination other than people that live in the area. Been back here a few times. While I am happy to have it as a local bar I have also been served old skunked beer here as well. read more

The owner was mean and rude. He became angry when we put the tables together for our large group and when one of us asked for a redo on a drink, he slammed the drink down the sink and cursed he was f'ing tired of us.
