I recently purchased a car from Phat's (yes, its spelled/pronounced like the early 2000s slang word, so getting all the immature laughing out of the way now) Auto Group. Having recently committed to a 180 mile round trip daily commute I needed a cheap car that gets gas mileage and would be dependable enough to get me to work every day. Prior to search lots I first needed to figure out what kind of car I wanted. I did a lot of online research and spoke with a co-worker who confessed he always wanted to be a car purchaser and decided on a used Toyota Prius C. Cheap, great gas mileage and the dependability of a Toyota. Just what I was looking for. With the car make and model selected I now needed to find the perfect car. I did exhaustive online search of lots stretching from Chula Vista up to Santa Clarita. I found lots of options and started visiting dealerships. I found some cars that were acceptable in both miles and price but at each dealership I visited the sales team treated me like a number and sale to add to their monthly quota, not a customer with a need. Enter Phat....and his auto group. I found the Prius C that Phat was selling on a third party website. I checked Phat's web site to see if it was listed on there, and it was! So far, so good. Knowing nothing about the dealership, I was impressed by the professional look of the website so I did what you are doing right now. I read Yelp reviews. I was suspicious of all the positive reviews and felt that they must have been Russian trolls or bots but none of them jumped out at me as being overtly fraudulently. Maybe Phat is just that good? Next, I called to make sure the car was still on the website and Emily informed me it was. When I asked about the car I could tell Emily was actually checking to make sure the car was still available. Most shady dealerships will tell you they have the car just to get you to come to the lot and then sell you something different. Not here, if they don't have the car they will let you know. When I got to the lot, I was a little skeptical. To be blunt, Phat's Auto Group is the type of lot I would drive past and think, "Who would ever buy a car from that lot?" It's just a typical used car lot. The lot itself is in Covina and when compared to large manufacture dealerships is on the smaller size. They make the most of the space and regularly perform an efficient ballet of moving cars. Emily welcomed me to the lot and after a little small talk showed me the car I had come to see. No car Tetris needed, she already had it up front and waiting for me. We did a quick walk around, did the obligatory checks and tire kicks and took it on a test drive. Nothing exciting here, it's a Prius. Emily agreed to have the vehicle inspected by a third party mechanic. The mechanic found a couple of minor issues with the car but an hour later I had put a deposit on the car and told them I would be back to finish the deal in a few days. So how did I, a used car lot snob, go from doing hours of research to buying a car from a random lot in Covina that had a few issues? Because Phats Auto Group is awesome, that's why. Phat isn't just the owner of the lot, he is the car buyer and mechanic. Prior to starting his own dealership Phat was a Master Mechanic at Toyota for over a decade. All of the vehicles on Phat's lot are purchased at auction by Phat. He inspects them himself and then buys the ones that pass his standards. He then brings them back to the lot where he has a full bay to work on them. He will fix any issues he finds before they are even put on sale. What other used car lot has its own bay and Master Mechanic? I've never seen any. Oh, and Emily? Her and Phat are married. It's a family business! How awesome is that. Even better than that, they treat you like family. I never once felt like I was being taken advantage of. Emily never tried to sell me a different car or tell me that the issues the mechanic found didn't matter. Instead she called Phat, on his vacation mind you, and told him everything that the mechanic found. Phat said, no problem he would fix it. I could tell that Emily and Phat are proud of their business and proud of their product. I knew buying from them was the correct decision. I put the deposit down on the spot and went back a few days later to finalize the sale. Phat was back from his vacation and when talking to him in person I knew I made the right decision. After I got the car home I noticed another issue with the car. I called Phat back up and he offered to fix it for me for free! Imagine buying a car from another used car lot, do you think they will fix something for you after you drive it off the lot? Not a chance. So if you are looking for a used car do yourself a favor and go here. Phat and Emily are better than any dealership you will find. Trust me I'm not a bot or paid for this review. You can tell Phat puts in a lot of time and care in acquiring and servicing his inventory and I know the value in that as a buyer who doesn't want to buy a problem even though it's got more than 150K miles. Phat happens to be a great mechanic. No leaks. Drives good. No weird sounds. Body panels look right. Frame good. Tires match and good. Pre-sales and post-sales experience has been fantastic, considering most dealerships don't have a post-sales experience at all unless it's bad. On August 9, my husband had to call it quits on his 1993 Toyota Pickup Truck (he bought it when it was new now well over 400,000 miles) and it now required a part that was obsolete. We could not afford a new truck and my husband, who isn't tech savvy, wanted another small Toyota pickup truck. And so, the hunt was on. I searched the Carfax site (I wanted the history of the vehicles) for a suitable candidate for 4 hours and came up with 6 possible trucks. We live in Rialto and I searched for several cities away as far as Long Beach. Next came the reviews of the dealerships which offered the 6 trucks. All of the dealerships were one-star reviews on Yelp with the exception of Phat's Auto Group which carried 5-star reviews. Upon further research, I learned the Phat was a Master Mechanic from Longo Toyota and, from a previous review, basically had a Toyota lot. All of the cars on the lot are Carfax and after a detailed look at the inventory (more than once), all of the cars were clean, well kept and loved by previous owners. It was obvious Phat hand picked them and he took pride in his inventory. Looking at the photos of the truck, they left nothing to hide as the website featured every angle in the exterior and interior of the truck (2000 Tacoma). The truck was perfect, small, basic technology, clean with the right price. The only drawback (according to my husband), it was white. He didn't want or like a white truck. Thursday, I called the dealership to confirm the truck was still there and Emily answered the phone and confirmed it was, however, others were interested in it. I convinced my husband to look at the truck and the inventory on the lot. We were met by a friendly and smiling Phat. He escorted us to the truck with the announcement that he was awaiting a part for the air conditioner which he found a leak in and it would not be ready for a few days if we were to buy it. REALLY!!! Did this used car lot owner tell us that the vehicle needed a repair and that he will fix it BEFORE it rolls off of the LOT! OMG! An honest used car dealer! My husband and I went to a clean, obviously loved, better than it looked in the photos, perfect Toyota pickup truck with a liner in the back. He was in love. He didn't even test drive it. He ended up buying it. They do not finance the car loans, but work with two finance companies and, of course, the terms are based on your credit history/rating. Emily took us through the steps with skillful expertise. At no point we were confused on the terms or process. One week later, unexpectedly, my Honda Civic, blew the radiator at 257,000 miles. And after two weeks of thought I threw in the towel, jumped the Honda ship (I had only had Honda Civics) and went online to Phats website. I wanted to buy from no other place. I ended up with a used Lexus ES 350. My first luxury car! I cannot say enough for this family-owned business. Phat and Emily know the inventory intimately. Phat not only knows his cars, but is a no BS, honest man. The inventory is clean, in good shape for the miles on the car, and the prices are fair for the vehicles on the lot.
