Have been going to Pheasant Hollow Winery for over a decade, every time I drive down to southern Illinois. Wife and I stopped in one my last trip, thirsty and tired. Asked for a glass of water and the lady behind the bar went to the cooler and gave me and the wife a bottle of water, no charge. I knew what I wanted to drink ( a glass of Pink Catawba wine), my wife wanted to do a tasting ( taste 3 wines , no charge . The gentleman behind the bar gave her and additional 3 tastings). We both got a glass of pink Catawba - $5 a glass and relaxed outside, sitting in the woods. Bought 3 bottles of wine to take home. Friendly people, beautiful setting, excellent wines. read more

Beautiful winery with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. They have something for every palate from dry to sweet. Open 7 days a week and have live music on the weekend. We loved the vidal blanc and purchased a bottle. Some of the lowest prices on wine we've seen across the U.S. They don't charge for tastings and they have some specialty foods for purchase if you get the wine munchies. read more

We had an exceptional experience visiting Pheasant Hollow Winery. on top of having really good wine, we were driving back from a trip and we were able to bring our cats, who were traveling with us, inside of the joint. They were in their cat carriers. We called before leaving to ask and see if we could bring them in and it was encouraged. The staff were really nice and we had some really nice tasting wine. We bought 3 bottles before heading on our way. If you want to come and enjoy a glass of wine near an exit off the interstate, this is a place to visit. You will enjoy their offers and not to mention the prices of the wine is super reasonable for the quality that you get. Parking is not difficult either. read more

Stopped by with my mother bc we wanted to check out the Filipino food truck that was there today! Checked their wines out before getting our food and was pleasantly surprised at the variety and knowledge of staff. Also to note very warm and accommodating staff! The black and blue wine was amazing along with a few others we tried. Ended up buying 2 bottles along with our late lunch at the truck. A ton of shaded seating and a music was also going on outside! Absolutely love this place!! The guy that helped us was extremely sweet and was very knowledgeable on the wine that was offered! Being new to wine tasting he was able to help us pick out wines for our flight that we would like. We were able to sample 3 wines before picking out our flight wines. We sat outside on the cute little porch to enjoy them. It was also right off the highway which was nice since since we are on a road trip. Aside from the hours of operation, this is a pretty great place. It's situated in the middle of nowhere, so when you see signs for it, you're probably ready for a driving break anyway. What better than to relax with a tasting. Lots of shade outside, and a big tasting area inside if you're that type of person. Park wherever, it don't matter. The wines are all decent for the price, the tasting was informative (although the pours are small), and if they have any off-menu stuff you can probably try that gratis. Really, it's a don't miss stop if you're in the area and have the time. Skip getting gas at the station around the corner though, they're overpriced. read more

Stopped in quickly for a few drinks. No employees were wearing masks. All of our party was wearing masks. Staff seemed annoyed to see us. Bartender refused service to our 30 year old friend whose license had technically expired (but which was ironic because there's a state mask requirement and the Secretary of State has extended license validity throughout the covid -19 disaster; basically, it was illegal to not wear masks but it's not illegal to serve to someone whose valid license expires during the pandemic). We sampled a few wines, and only the fruity one was drinkable. Not a friendly place. Atmosphere was cold. Guy who helped us was knowledgeable but only answered questions we asked. Did not offer any more. We have been to Napa and been to smaller ones than Pheasant Hollow and they were always more than anxious to promote their product, procedures and friendly. Pheasant Hollow is but one of the many wineries located in and around Southern Illinois. PHW was my last stop on the Shawnee Wine Trail. It did not disappoint. They have a wide variety of wines and most of them are pleasing to the pallet. The gentleman working the counter knew his stuff. He was also pleasant and down to earth. No pretension here. The facilities are very nice. You can sit indoors or outside on the deck or the grounds. PHW also hosts a New Orleans themed fest. Check the website for details. I ended up purchasing several bottles of the Ring Neck Red. This is a basic table red but it goes down like kool-aid. Is that a bad thing? I think not. Make a point of stopping into PHW if you have the opportunity. read more

Spur of the moment detour and a very pleasant surprise. Not far from the highway nestled in a patch of woods. Fall is a fabulous time to visit. Vibrant fall foliage and the smell of a fireplace make it homey. All wines tried were pleasant and leaned towards the sweeter side. Left with four bottles to enjoy. The map icon is a little off. PHW is a great place to unwind with great wine! They are known for their sweet "Blue" wines-- Black & Blue, Red & Blue, and Orange & Blue. However, their other wines are equally fantastic: sweet, dry, and everything in between. My personal favorite is the semi-sweet Vignoles. For those hotter times, they have wine slushies on tap. The winery itself is a comfortable log building set off in the woods. The ample porch wraps around three sides with various forms of seating. The interior is open. Walk through the doors and the wide tasting bar is right in front of you. A large fireplace gives warmth and light in the winter months. Outside is a bandstand and small amphitheater for the many musical acts they have. In addition, they have murder mysteries once a month and special occasion entertainment throughout the year. PHW is so close to the Rend Lake (and the Rend Lake Golf Course) and I-57 that it's easy to find, but it's location makes you feel like you are in secluded woods. The staff is polite and friendly and KNOWLEDGEABLE. They know their wines and will help you find exactly the wine for you. I have been to PHW several times and will be back. I am unable to review the actual wine as was I wasn't served any. I arrived at 5:25 and the winery closes at 6:00. I noticed there were tables being set up and inquired with the staff to see if the winery was closed for a private party. She said no but an older woman yelled across the room, "We close at 6:00 just like the sign says!" It was the rudest I have ever been treated in all my experiences in visiting wineries. I will never return and I will happily spend my money supporting more friendly establishments. read more
