This review is only for late night bar hopping; I've never been to Happy Hour or a "calm" evening here. What I experienced one bitter January night was a long line down the street, only to be separated from my friends at the door (they got in, I had to wait) and then it took me about 10 minutes to find them through the hoards of drunk frat-boy types. One good thing is that they have two bars, the big one in the front and then a smaller one in the back, so if you get elbowed into the corner you can at least drink to your misery. To be fair, if you like being stared at as a piece of meat or worse, or if you enjoy feeling violated by the "accidental" shoving and touching, then this may be your cup of tea on the weekend. My problem with this place was really the people who frequent it, not necessarily the bar itself. read more

We usually go to phebe for wings on Wednesdays. The appetizers are the best and I would recommend the nacho and tarter tots before the wing special starts at 8. The wings are a miss at times. Sometimes it come out cold but most of the time its hot and juicy. The beer selection is not big but enough to satisfy everyone's taste buds. I actually come here a lot. Phebe's is one of the first places I ever started drinking years ago during college, and is still a go-to bar after work these days. Like many reviewers stated, Phebe's is pretty generic. It looks like any bar nearby with average service and average tasting food. The beers are oddly never cold enough. (The fries would be an exception. I think they're delicious.) However I find myself coming here pretty often because of it's happy hour value. Between the hours of 4pm and 8pm, the drinks and appetizers are available for a generously reduced price. It's also located in an area where my friends and I probably subconsciously relive our college youth! The bar is pretty spacious, so it fits our random gatherings nicely. When I come here between spring and early fall, the large windows out front lets in plenty of light and a warm breeze. It feels pretty nice to be there during that time. I can't give this place more than 3 stars and I'm not sure if I would recommend this place, but my friends and I will probably continue patronizing Phebe's for some time to come. read more

Phebes, what can I say about this place. Today was the first time I have ever been there. The burgers were great and it was even better because I bought one and got one free. How can you beat that, but you only get one side and tator tots are the way to go. The burgers were cooked perfectly and tator tots were hot crispy, salty and full of flavor. I would got there again. When they say 'discounted drinks' during happy hour until 8pm, it usually means a dollar or 2 at the most off of already over-priced not entirely great craft beers. And by craft, I'm talking about just an Abita Purple Haze or a Brooklyn Lager or a Magic Hat. You're better off just getting a well drink here. The food I have never tried but it also seems rather mediocre and of your standard chicken wings, quesadillas, burgers, etc. and their brunch only includes one complimentary beverage. I wouldn't stay here very long. It gets very over-crowded. An over-hyped bar that I could live without. read more

The drinks here are slightly better value than at B Bar and slightly higher quality. Just as crowded though and there's always a pretty long line to get in on the weekends. Why did my friends and I have to track her down multiple times when we were in the back of the restaurant near where they put in the food orders in the system and she was standing right there while my friend was calling her. Completely ignoring us. We order the Nachos which I do not ever recommend we could not taste the cheese nor was the cheese on top of the meat. She was telling us "Oh its underneath the meat" but there was barely any cheese. So we wanted it on top to be melted like you know if you were going to go an actually Mexican restaurant and order nachos or a freaking chipotle and they put cheese not just on the bottom but also on the top! Seems as she went to get her manager, who wasn't any nicer at all or understanding that we wanted some cheese on top of the nachos. He seemed annoyed that it had to be remade. We got the Nachos back remade and it still had cheese on the bottom so we ate some of it because we agreed "Well they added more cheese so we will just take it" Mean while some blonde girl with a green crop top came and ask if everything was okay but then she was looking at us like we didn't belong there, I don't want to make this race based but thats what the vibes were giving. Then after the blonde girl checks on us we never hear from Kayla in a long while. We are waiting for her to come back so we can ask for the check. Behind us is a group of people and my friend is trying to get her attention but she is busy seating people down who belong to the group so we wait till she is in our direction. She literally sits down next a lady who is apart of that group and she sits there and talks to her while my friend is calling for her attention so we can pay and leave. She finally hands us the bill and she walks away again. We decide to split the bill and then my other friend gets up to get her so we can split. She seemed annoyed multiple times and keeps walking away to go chit chat. Clearly we did not tip her because the service was horrible including the manager. read more

A friend and I went to see a play at the New York Theater Workshop (Okay, it was Othello with Daniel (freakin' James Bond) Craig, David Oyelowo, Dandy from AHS and more!). The play was awesome, but even more awesome was the meal we had before the show. While schmying around East Village and visiting hipster places like Enchantments and the dog park (neither of us owns a dog), we had worked up an appetite. The play wasn't going to begin for a few hours, but we had to pick up our tickets a mere two hours before the show. Enter Phebe's! This was a cool little bar that we hung out in before the show. We had a very tasty Pilsner- because I had recently visited the Czech Republic and had a hankering for the beer I tried there. The menu had a lot to offer two hungry NYC tourists- truly something for everyone. I got the Phebe's Blackjack Burger, which was out of this world. I don't love burgers, but I do crave one every once in a while and this burger sounded great. It was delicious- I would order a burger more often if they were all as terrific as this one. The sauce was pure perfection. I also got to order a side of salad instead of carby fries, which made this a great option for a dinner before a show. My friend got the bacon mac and cheese, which was also yummy. Our server was delightful and made sure we had everything we needed. When in the East Village, which unfortunately isn't very often, I plan to make Phebe's my go-to stop for a delicious meal. read more

Been here a lot the past few years for happy hour as it offers half price drinks and appetizers until 8pm, which is pretty hard to find in that area. Service is a hit or miss depending on how packed it is. Haven't been back here for awhile - it seems like word got out and this place is packed everytime we think about going here for happy hour since it's in such a convenient area. I guess we have moved on to find a different place for happy hour. TVs are a little too small to be coming here to enjoy some Knicks games anymore. I've been here a couple of times on weekends. Took a big group here to start our night on a Saturday. My advice is head straight for the backroom on a busier night, because there's a little more room to breathe. That being said, expect it to get crowded. The drink prices are standard NYC ($10 for a Captain and Coe). I'd say the average age veers towards 21-25 if that's your thing. There's a little bit of dance area in the back (definitley NOT my thing). But it's a pretty fun crowd, and if you don't mind not having to much personal space at peak hours. I'd certainly include this bar in my lexicon if I was with a group that wanted to party in a more upbeat environment. read more

There was a mistake on the check that we attempted to correct her about and instead we were met with attitude and she was very dismissive. I was charged an extra $11. What I'm trying to say is that it's your typical Pub style sports bar. TV's all over the place, plenty of hi-top tables, seating in back, 2 for 1 drink specials til 8. Great place to go grab a bite and watch a game. That said, the standard pub grub is a little below standard. I've eaten here during happy hour, as well as lunch and everything was just about average. Really cool vibe to this bar-restaurant! Good place to grab and drink and something to eat. I Got a playboy, which is a drink and it was surprisingly good! Normally the drinks are a hit or miss at new places but this one is great! I ordered a fried calamari, huge portion awesome sauces! Was not expecting the spicy avocado sauce! But was fantastic! My cousin got the fried mozzarella and it was really small, and very bland. Balls not sticks, they should include that in the menu! Lastly my fiancé got the Chicken Avocado Tomato Melt with sweet potato fries as a side! Presentation was awesome! The fries were super delicious and the chicken was tender. In all it was really good but she claimed there was a bit too much chicken, we are not used to the size of food here in the US. We really recommend the chicken avocado tomato melt and the fried calamari! The drinks are a definite also. The only downside is the service is super slow And they don't check on you very often. I'm pretty upset by this. I was walking around with my cousin and my fiancé looking for a bite to eat. We found phebes, as soon as we walked in we were bombarded by security asking if we had an ID, which was not expected and really an unpleasant experience. Phebe's is a dependable bar for solid food, decent beer selections, and viewing big sports events. The space is inviting especially with the amount of natural light in the main bar area. There's a second bar in the back area but the place quickly fills up on weekend nights so you need to get there early. Oh, special mention to the brunette hostess on Friday nights: you're a doll! As for the food, the wings are the standout although I've tried many of their selections ranging from their cheese nachos, burger sliders, and mushroom quesadillas. I'll usually order a Blue Moon since it's really tasty as beers go. They also offer Brooklyn lager, Yeungling, and an assortment of German brews. If a pitcher is shared with 4 people, it's a nice healthy serving with about 10 wings each, which will definitely satisfy hunger. Wings are of decent quality. Can go barbeque, mild, or hot. Evenly splitting the check at the end, ranges from 6-9 dollars, tax & tip included, generously. Service is pretty good. Waitress came back to check on us every 10-15 minutes. Really sweet. Be SMART: Beer & Chicken is usually a guy thing..and the channels are usually full of sports...and it's a bar...Don't complain when you wonder why there's so many middle aged guys or sausage.
