Last time I was there was about two years ago and on my last appointment Shay was rude and mentioned that he was not taking my insurance any longer and the appointment seemed rushed. I think he got the message from my insurance where he was charging me way too much for my annual cleaning when it was a certain amount and I had notified my insurance about it. Before you go to any appointment be aware of your benefits and copay if not people like this will try and swindle you for your money and scam the insurance. read more

I new dr Shay for over a decade he was my dentist , he is very nice and was more easy going and flexible with with time and price , this was before his wife started to work for him .. she is very snippy aggressive and speaks for dr Shay as she makes decisions for him that I don't believe dr Shay would be okay with , she is a liar and she is deceiving , I believe dr Shay would be doing his business / dental office a great service if he fired her ! read more

I am fortunate to have never had dental issues and only see my dentist for standard cleaning, but have been very happy as a patient of Dr. Shay for 8 years. He has seen me on each and every appointment and is always kind and gentle. His hygienists are pleasant and give you information and advice without being preachy. After a very very very very very long time (not sure if I used enough verys) of not seeing a dentist, one would assume the fear/anxiety level would be off the charts, hence me. I finally built up the courage to schedule an appointment and I am oh so very glad that I found Dr. Shay and his staff! From beginning to end, everyone could not of been any nicer! Started by making an online request for an appointment. Early next business day they called me for my dental insurance information and the basics. I am terrible with names, but the receptionist/office manager could not be any sweeter on the phone, huge plus! After deciding on an appointment, I was then called a week before because it needed to be rescheduled, which once again was done with such accommodating and pleasant demeanor. Ok, fast forward to the day of my visit. I arrived about 20 minutes early since I figured I would need to fill out some extra info, being a new patient, and try to give myself enough time with early morning NYC traffic. Filled out the necessary stuff and waited to be seen. The hygienist, I am so sorry I forgot your name!, was so kind and gentle and really put my nerves at ease. We started with taking some x-rays which were super fancy and digital. I was nervous because I have a nostril and septum piercing, but thankfully they did not effect the x-rays. After about 45min to an hour cleaning my teeth, it all didn't seem too terrible! the hygienist was so nice, playing music to help distract me while she was cleaning my teeth. She kindly gave me a few breaks as it was a long time having my mouth open. None the less she did such an amazing job! Dr. Shay himself was just as kind and gentle. He asked me lots of questions, and did a complete exam of my mouth and explained issues that needed to be addressed and costs. Overall, after not going for such a long time, the experience definitely made me feel so comfortable and took away a lot of the fear I had. This place is great and I highly recommend it! read more

He's been my dentist for several years now, giving me a root canal and a few crowns (because I really needed it). He has also been my general dentist, administering cleanings twice a year and has whitened my teeth (Brite Smile) right before my wedding. Very bad Invisalign treatment. The doctor was impatient with my questions. He didn't take my concerns seriously. At the end he removed the Invisalign attachments in a very sloppy way that damaged my enamel. My treatment wasn't fully complete and I never heard from him again not even for regular cleaning. Don't go for Invisalign - big mistake!! I would not trust someone like that with my teeth. read more

I'm not one to write reviews (positive or negative) but you can be the judge and determine if this is the care you are looking for. I screwed up and showed up for my 11A appt at 10A. I had a sitter at home for my 9 month old and would not be able to come back do to childcare. I said that I was upset with myself for making the mistake and that I would just pick up my mouth guard and have to reschedule my cleaning. Carrie (the receptionist/office manager) said OK. Five minutes later she proceeded to tell me that they would have to charge me $25 for my missed appt. Really folks? Really? I've heard this receptionist be very curt on the phone with other patients, but it was never directed at me before. We got into a disagreement and she ended it by saying she would email my X-rays as they don't wish to have patients like me and then she walked out of the room. I don't care to have unprofessional healthcare providers like this office clearly has on staff. For the record the office had to remold for my bit guard as the first one didn't fit. Dr Shay is professional, straightforward, thorough, and nice. The office manager is also super nice and cool. The dental hygenists (I had Zeena) are also super friendly and thorough. Big plus - he takes insurance, including mine, Guardian Dental through Aetna. I had some bonding replaced with veneers and Dr Shay did the procedure very comfortably and took his time to get a good match in color and shape. He has amazing software and equipment in his office. While Dr Shay looks and acts in a very straitlaced manner, he played reggae music while the procedure was taking place, which puts one in a mellow and cheeful mood. I had been apprehensive about the steps of the 2 hour process of making and affixing the veneers. Instead, I closed my eyes and thought about those three little birds on my doorstep. read more

I am a City Employee with Healthplex who needed to find a new dentist after some real horror stories including really painful unnecessary work that was done poorly to the tune of thousands. After reviewing over 100 dentists on Healthplex against their Yelp reviews I chose Dr. Shay. Thank you Yelpers for your reviews! The office is modern with new digital equipment. After having some pretty painful cleanings, Zeena the dental hygienist gave me the best cleaning of my life. She was careful, gentle, attentive and took her time. Dr. Shay is as attentive and honest as all the other reviews say. Despite the dentist from much horror stories saying I needed thousands in dental work, Dr. Shay gave me a clean bill of health. After extensively searching for a dentist on yelp that someone had given a GOOD review of AND took my insurance (1199), I yielded exactly 1 dentist - Phil Shay (yeah, 1199 is just a LITTLE restrictive!) So I went today to the office, which was way out of my way, however I'm glad I made the trip because I had read 2 horrible reviews of the place I was going to go (West Side Dental on the Upper West Side) on citysearch... Everyone in the office was very friendly. The receptionist greeted me warmly and didn't make me fill out 500 million forms; I just gave her a copy of my insurance card and filled out my medical history. The hygienist was thorough without being overly painful. The x-rays were quick and they used an instrument that was much easier to tolerate than those plastic bite guards. The dentist seemed nice - my only criticism is that he looked at the x-rays for 1 minute, exclaimed that I had no cavities and everything looked fine, and left the room. He spent very little time with me and did not do any "clinical" exam outside of looking at the x-rays - I'm not a dentist and maybe this is okay - who knows. Anyway, compared to past traumatic and horrible experiences I've had with other dentist offices - this was easy, painless, quick (in and out under 40 minutes on my first appointment - and was able to squeeze in on the same day I called for an appointment!) and they didn't try to sell me a bunch of stuff that I didn't need! I'll definitely be returning and suggesting him to others! read more

I've never provided feedback on Yelp, and regret that my first review is dismal. However, I must warn you, that despite the other glowing reviews, Dr. Shay defrauded my insurance company. Following completion of a root canal therapy, he charged/received payment for a crown that was never applied. After the pulpotomy, and subsequent removal of the root tissue, I returned for a follow-up appointment with Dr. Shay in order to apply the crown. I received the novocaine injection, and Dr. Shay diligently worked on the treated tooth for an extended period of time. Dr. Shay then leaned over the exam chair, and explained, "Your tooth is structurally intact, therefore, I don't think it will be necessary to apply a crown. Instead, I've installed a titanium rod, and have applied a filling. But, Oh! by the way...I intend to bill your insurance for the CROWN anyway, and perhaps we may decide to apply the crown at a later time..." I was shocked, and although tempted to insist that the crown be applied, I immediately decided that it was time to make a hasty exit; Dr. Shay would not be providing any further dental treatments. (I was also aware that a crown is required in order to prevent irreparable damage to the remaining tooth structure; a previous tooth "fractured" following root canal therapy, having not completed the crown) I promptly contacted my insurance company, and was informed that they had not yet been billed for the crown. However, two months later I called, and was told that a payment for the crown had been paid to Dr. Shay. In the meantime, my insurance company's "fraud department" has failed to respond to my written, as well as telephone messages. I visited another dentist a few months after leaving Dr. Shay. The dentist was unable to obtain pre-authorization from my insurance, in order to crown the tooth (which otherwise had already been paid). According to recent X-rays, the roots of the treated tooth have since fractured (likely due to the lack of a crown). May dentist explained, that the tooth will eventually begin to shift, and will need to be extracted. That's too bad, because at the moment, I can't afford an extraction, or an implant... so hopefully it stays where it is! Bottom line...stay away from this unethical, crooked dentist! read more

I hate going to the dentist-but Dr.Shay is great. He remembers me even though I only see him twice a year for cleanings. The receptionist also remembers me and is super sweet--after the cleaning I fill out a quick postcard reminder for myself and I'm out the door. Dr Phil shay is the best dentist in this entire world. And may I just say coming from some one like me, with major dental anxiety I have had a panic attack even before sitting on the patient chair. Ms. Carrie the office manager/ front desk is half the reason I have the strength to show up for my visits, she is the most amazing understanding warm and loving women any human can come across. I moved to Nyc two years ago and have a list of different dentists I have seen not only in New York but outside this country as well since I am international, no one ever got me to visit them twice except for dr. Shay. With dr shay - I have had a root canal, impacted wisdom tooth extraction, cleaning fillings etc u name it, everything one can imagine ( serious anxiety - cry at the sight of needles), and him and his staff have made sure I am taken care of, been there for me during weekends and accommodated my time schedule. Ms. Carrie not only understands when it is an emergency but also makes sure to accommodate me with my crazy time schedule and follows up to check up on me as to how I am doing after the treatment. She is half the reason I go there, specially for some one like me new to Nyc. Words don't do justice to how amazing dr shay and Carrie are and they make a wonderful team. Also I work at a medical practice, and I understand as well as know it is not only respectful to the doctor but also his staff and other patients to keep your appointment or show up on time. I have had multiple occasions where I was running late ( Mta, Nyc traffic, clocking out of work) however Carrie has always been super duper understanding and never have I not been seen. A doctors appointment time should be respected as some other patient could have used that time for their treatment. It's not about the money but about patient care and health.. read more

DONT'T GO THERE!!!! I had a couple fillings done recently and was promised repeatedly that the procedure would be covered by my insurance. Guess what, I ended up paying $2000 out of pocket! He used super expensive fillings and "proactively" fixed something which was not necessary. He did it anyway so to maximum his charge. Therefore the insurance refused to pay for it. He is NOT gentle. Some ceramic got stuck in between my teeth because he used too much of it. He drilled and knocked for half an hour and my head was going to explode because of the force. And his drill BURNT my lips by accident. What a NIGHTMARE! On top of all that, they messed up my X-rays (submitting the wrong X-rays to the insurance company) TWICE. read more

I've meant to write a review for a while & today Dr. Shay really needs a big thank you. I saw the same dentist for 20 years - don't really like going to the dentist so when you find one you trust... However, he didn't take insurance & as his practice got fancier he charged a fortune. And then I lost my job - but luckily had COBRA dental insurance. My best friend insisted I go to Dr. Shay - she'd been seeing him for years & loved him. I had a horrible toothache & so bit the bullet (or not) and went. He was so patient as he went through the x-rays with me, showed the gray area of my infection & pulled my wisdom tooth. That sounds easy - but not when you have a very panicky patient who keeps asking if we can just put it off a few days... Pulled the tooth - no pain - and gave me explicit instructions and medication. Of course, being a panicky patient I showed up a few days later worried it wasn't healing enough - but he again patiently reassured me it was doing well. It healed up completely :-) Went back a month later for a regular check up & still liked him. And oh yes - the insurance only required a copay both times! Now fast forward to today. In London & not going to return to the States for a few months. Bad toothache - actually quite a few of them hurt. Go to a dentist in London who tells me I need to wait for it to evolve so we can identify which tooth needs a root canal. Really? Called Dr. Shay today & explained the situation & that I didn't know this dentist & was this right? He immediately got on the phone & talked me off the ledge. Went through it with me & reassured me. I love Dr. Shay! I had to go in because a filling was broken from another dentist. He was so gentle, I literally almost fell asleep through the root canal to fix it. He definitely waits long enough for the novacaine to work before giving shots too. Also, I love how friendly his office manager is. Jackie (I hope I'm spelling it right) is so wonderful. She remembers you by name and she's so down to earth. She's direct and understanding even about canceling appointments. Even the technician that does the cleanings is outstanding. I can't say enough about this place. The last time there was a snow, Dr. Shay himself called to see if I needed to cancel, and because I still had to go to work (down the street), he came into the city for our appointment. I'm a big fan of Dr. Shay! He is very kind and gentle. As a graduate student with dental insurance that only pays for preventative care (Emblem Health Preferred), I pay for fillings out of pocket. Even though Dr. Shay uses all the latest technology, he charges a very fair price that I can afford. I'm very pleased with the work he's done for me, including a onlay (it's like a partial crown, so it's strong, but it's tooth colored, so you'd never know) that he created by making a 3D model of my mouth - pretty cool. I get anxious, so part of why I chose him was because he offers nitrous oxide, but I felt very comfortable with Dr. Shay and have never actually needed to use the nitrous. Also, his wife runs the office, and she is great about getting back to you right away (like within the hour) with any questions about your insurance. I highly recommend Dr. Shay! read more

It's seven years later and I can't imagine going anywhere else. Five different people from my work ended up going to them on my recommendation and ALL are happy. I am on furlough and have government insurance, which isn't covered at the office, but Dr. Shay and Carrie have very reasonable out-of-pocket prices. I truly adore this team. Carrie's bright, pretty, smiling face and laughter is a joy. Dr. Shay's mindful, peaceful, and detailed energy is pure dentistry perfection. His dental hygienists are always top-notch. I have never been charged for anything crazy or pitched anything crazy because this team just wants you to enjoy your smile and wants you to obtain excellent teeth-health. I get terrific cleanings and cancer screenings and treated so well, it's a God-send, whether we're in the bleak times of COVID or anything else. He is patient with my anxiety, and is always sure to make sure I know what all of my options are before making any major decisions. He makes sure I am as comfortable as I can be before starting any intense dental work - which I really appreciate. Since being a patient, I've had an emergency molar extraction, and broke a tooth that was a huge complication to fix, and Dr Shay was amazing through both procedures! I've been with Dr. Shay now for a year. I've been wandering among Cigna dentists who simply do not want to do any work since the Cigna insurance pay is not great. But Dr. Shay !!!!! WOW!! Dr. Shay began immediately, pulled out several bad teeth and then built me a beautiful set of 2 partial dentures that fit perfectly and look great. Here is a dentist who loves his work and wants so much to help his patients regardless of whether he is making gobs of money on them!!! The office is totally a pleasant experience. I have Cigna HMO and have dealt with a couple of really low-down dentists. But when I found Dr. Shay, the sun came out again. He's a talented dentist, a kind, caring and sweet guy who answers every little question you have, who explains exactly what your procedure entails, whose office is spotless and fresh, whose staff is friendly and accommodating, and for that matter who is as gentle as possible if you're having real work done. My procedure, after two site injections, was painless. If you think they don't make dentists like this anymore, it's not true. The location is very convenient, too.
