Small 50/50 platter: fried catfish & oysters, hush puppies & lima beans with shrimp
    Mike C.

Had it not been for Yelp, I would have never known about Philay's. We happened to be in the area, as we had just finished shopping at the Tanger Outlet Mall, and we were looking for a place to eat. I had never heard of Philay's Catfish N' More, but the Yelp reviews were so good, that we decided to venture another 8.5 miles westward to try it out. It was very crowded upon our arrival, but this was a good sign that the food was worth the wait. We were seated fairly quickly and our server was Colby. Although crowded, the ambiance was inviting, albeit as little noisy. It definitely was a family clientele. My son got the Jumbeaux burger with fries and I can honestly say it was legit, as he allowed me to sample it. My wife got the small 50/50 platter with grilled fish, gilled shrimp and rice "pilaf". Again, I was afforded a sample of her platter and can say it too was legit. I also got the small 50/50 platter but with fried fish, fried oysters & MiMi's lima beans with shrimp. The fish was deliciously seasoned as were the oysters, but the oysters were entirely too small. I would have happily paid extra money for larger oysters, but perhaps they were not readily available or near being out of season. For dessert, we decided to try an order of Grammy's Banana pudding, with 3 spoons. I can honestly say that this was the best banana pudding I've ever eaten. The "Nilla" wafers were broken into smaller pieces, but there was something a little different, but very special, that made this pudding so darned good. It's a secret recipe, but I am guessing that it contained, cream cheese double cream or creme fraiche. Whatever it was, it was subtle enough that it still tasted like the "standard" banana pudding most of us know, but just different enough to make it very special. You have got to try it if you ever go.

Everything we ate was delicious! The service by our waitress and the personal attention by the owner was amazing! I highly recommend the banana pudding.

Fresh soft bread makes the difference with their fried shrimp Poboy plus the shrimp & corn soup was amazing!

This place has some really good seafood. The catfish and shrimp are seasoned well and have a light crispy taste. I didn't like the crabcake it had a strange taste so they subbed it out for more shrimp. Their redbeans were awesome as was the service. This will definitely be one of my spots when I visit Louisiana.

Friends Night out!! We had the works!! Apps: Crab claws marinated in butter green as suggested by our Waitress Denise and it did not disappoint! Crab cake creole and gumbo was okay. Gumbo was more like an etouffee and I can appreciate that the crab cake was made from real crab stuffing. The Cajun clusters and crab and shrimp queso was our favorite appetizers. Moving on to Entrees: The 50-50 platter with blackened fish and shrimp was good. The whole catfish platter and the big Easy were the star dishes of the night. The steak was cooked to perfection but they were skimpy on the sauce for the pasta dish. Overall great restaurant to socialize with friends and Denise keep the drinking coming!! Drinks: try the strawberry martini and Cajun punch.

Ate here last night. I am from California so when i come to LA I am always looking for great food. This place did not disappoint. I had the crawfish baked potato and it was delicious! Smothered in crawfish ettoufee with fried crawfish on top!! Delish!! Also had the crawfish balls which were amazing!! Tasted like they were fried in fried chicken batter on the outside. Delicious!! My hubby had one of the fried platters which he also enjoyed. Would definitely visit again.

    Cajun clusters--oh yeah!!!!!

After a previous not-so-great experience at the bar, I received a call from Jason, the General…read moreManager at Don's Seafood in Gonzales, who personally reached out to apologize and invited me to come back so he could take care of us. He said, "Next time you're in Gonzales, please stop by -- I'd love to meet you." So this past Sunday, Parker and I went in for brunch -- same time of day as before -- but this time we sat in the dining room, and the experience was completely different and absolutely wonderful. From the moment I walked in, Ava at the host stand smiled and said, "Oh, you're back!" and that right there is what I love about great front-of-house teams -- you feel remembered and welcomed. I asked if Jason was there, and it turns out Sunday is normally his day off, but he came in just to see us. That alone meant so much. He was warm, fun, genuinely hospitable, and made us feel truly cared for. And then Connor came by -- now sporting a mustache that somehow makes him look five years older -- but he recognized me right away and gave me a big hug. That kind of genuine connection says everything about the people who work here. Our server, Aaliyah, was phenomenal -- friendly, attentive, and always offering great recommendations with the best attitude. We started with Bloody Marys (which we loved), then ordered 3 pounds of crawfish, which also comes with corn and potatoes. It's early in the season, so they were lightly salty, but still absolutely delicious and perfect with the local draft beer we ordered (I believe it was from Parish Brewing). Such a great pairing. Parker ordered the half grilled shrimp with chicken gumbo, and I had the fried oyster po'boy with seafood gumbo -- mine was fantastic. His gumbo leaned a little salty, but overall everything was flavorful and satisfying. And then... Jason surprised us with king cake, just in time for Mardi Gras. He recommended strawberry and I also went with a classic because I'm a traditionalist when it comes to king cake -- and it was perfect. What really made the experience special was the atmosphere: families, couples, friends -- you could feel that this is a true community spot that people love. It was lively, warm, and full of good energy. Thank you, Jason, for going out of your way and turning a bad experience into an unforgettable one. Thank you, Aaliyah, for being such a wonderful server. And thank you, Connor (and that mustache ) for the hug and the warm welcome back. And thank you, Don's Seafood, for reminding me why this place is such a Gonzales staple. We'll definitely be back.

It is a staple of the I-10 corridor and Don's Seafood is a Lafayette standard now expanded to multiple locations. The Gonzalez, LA location is full of Cajun and traditional southern charm with a modern feel. I sat at the bar and got my Abita beer (my New Orleans go to) and a heaping plate of crawfish (standard 3lb order with corn and potato sides). Takes me back to growing up down south and well seasoned, not too salty or lip burningly spicy. Excellent size for early March as well (if you want mini lobster big, visit in early May). The bartender stayed attentive and made sure to get me the second Abita to wash it all down. Can't wait for my next trip!
