It is a staple of the I-10 corridor and Don's Seafood is a Lafayette standard now expanded to multiple locations. The Gonzalez, LA location is full of Cajun and traditional southern charm with a modern feel. I sat at the bar and got my Abita beer (my New Orleans go to) and a heaping plate of crawfish (standard 3lb order with corn and potato sides). Takes me back to growing up down south and well seasoned, not too salty or lip burningly spicy. Excellent size for early March as well (if you want mini lobster big, visit in early May). My husband and I went for lunch Saturday. We asked for the bread and butter. It was very good. Usually doesn't have much butter on it but this time it was floating in butter. We ordered a new thing on the menu. We bought wanted to try the Stuff Red Snapper with green beans and stuff potato. I was disappointed. Guess we should have said something but we didn't want to wait for another entrée . The fish was very dry. They over cooked it and the green beans were not hot. The stuff potato was good and hot. The staff is awesome. Loved the zydeco shrimp as appetizer. Main entree was quite the opposite and I almost fell out my seat when it came to the table. I ordered fried shrimp/ fried catfish platter. I have never been disappointed with ordering this platter anywhere in town until now. I had more plate space and I was in total shock on the size of the catfish strips. Really was just a little bigger than calamari. I could see more of the plate than the platter. I am sure the menu has some good things on it but not the catfish/shrimp platter. I went to Don's tonight and got a to go order and the service was very good. Soon as you get in your parking spot, you can call and they will come to your car. I called in boiled crawfish, (3 pounds) with corn potatoes and I was very disappointed. The crawfish was very salty still spicy but very salty. Last year when I went to get crawfish from Don's, it was seasoned very well and not salty but this year's batch was very salty. Not sure if it was just a batch that I got but overall, I rate Don's crawfish tonight a six out of 10. read more

After a previous not-so-great experience at the bar, I received a call from Jason, the General Manager at Don's Seafood in Gonzales, who personally reached out to apologize and invited me to come back so he could take care of us. He said, "Next time you're in Gonzales, please stop by -- I'd love to meet you." So this past Sunday, Parker and I went in for brunch -- same time of day as before -- but this time we sat in the dining room, and the experience was completely different and absolutely wonderful. From the moment I walked in, Ava at the host stand smiled and said, "Oh, you're back!" and that right there is what I love about great front-of-house teams -- you feel remembered and welcomed. I asked if Jason was there, and it turns out Sunday is normally his day off, but he came in just to see us. That alone meant so much. He was warm, fun, genuinely hospitable, and made us feel truly cared for. And then Connor came by -- now sporting a mustache that somehow makes him look five years older -- but he recognized me right away and gave me a big hug. That kind of genuine connection says everything about the people who work here. Our server, Aaliyah, was phenomenal -- friendly, attentive, and always offering great recommendations with the best attitude. We started with Bloody Marys (which we loved), then ordered 3 pounds of crawfish, which also comes with corn and potatoes. It's early in the season, so they were lightly salty, but still absolutely delicious and perfect with the local draft beer we ordered (I believe it was from Parish Brewing). Such a great pairing. Parker ordered the half grilled shrimp with chicken gumbo, and I had the fried oyster po'boy with seafood gumbo -- mine was fantastic. His gumbo leaned a little salty, but overall everything was flavorful and satisfying. And then... Jason surprised us with king cake, just in time for Mardi Gras. He recommended strawberry and I also went with a classic because I'm a traditionalist when it comes to king cake -- and it was perfect. What really made the experience special was the atmosphere: families, couples, friends -- you could feel that this is a true community spot that people love. It was lively, warm, and full of good energy. Thank you, Jason, for going out of your way and turning a bad experience into an unforgettable one. (I also like that the door handles are alligators hehe) I got crawfish étouffée (which comes with white rice) and a side of sweet corn grits and they were both fantastic. The grits had a bunch of melted butter on top. My grandmother got the half and half with the shrimp poboy and seafood gumbo. She said the gumbo was pretty thin and the flavor wasn't as good as other places she's been, but the fried shrimp on the poboy were perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. The bread was a little hard though. They also give free sliced bread with a butter drizzle. I would definitely come here again and I would order the same thing as last time. read more

I gave Don's 5 stars because they were the best restaurant I experienced on my trip to Louisiana. I went close to closing time, the food came out really quick. The Boudin Balls and the dipping sauce left a mark on my taste buds. I tried other places boudin on my trip and Don's Boudin balls and sauce are unmatched. I didn't try any Seafood because I don't eat seafood, thankfully they had other options to choose from. The sweet tea made me appreciate being in the south. This was my first and last time at Don's. The food was horrible...boiled shrimp were not seasoned. Just scaled in water for color. The fries were cold, hush puppies hard as a rock. The catfish was thin as a pancake(and, I ordered regular not thin catfish). The service was subpar...but, we did get greeted when walking into the establishment. The environment here is really nice. Cajun decor everywhere but it looks nice. It's not a swamp shack with tin siding bars and beads everywhere. Staff is Very Friendly. I've been here quite a few times. The Cowboy Ribeye was cooked perfectly and was very good. When I order a steak at a restaurant, I expect to experience something better than what I can prepare at home. I had hoped for better but it was still a good steak. The jacked up shrimp are savory and pair very well with buttered toast. I don't order these oysters anymore though because while they are delicious, the oysters (I presume due to cooking on the grill) are about the size of a quarter. I don't think the price is justified. I recently ordered the Cajun Ravioli and even though it was decent, it is so far my least favorite menu item. With all that said, I am sometimes a little too critical but I definitely recommend this place. The food is good and the atmosphere is great. read more

Great place located off I-10 in Gonzales, Louisiana. My group and I went here for lunch. The service was amazing and the food was delicious. When you can taste fried food, for me, that speaks to the chef's preparation and the temperature used throughout the cook. You can taste the seasoning in the batter and the seafood was not over cooked. We all ate the shrimp and fries with a side of cole slaw. EVERYTHING was cooked to order. This place is a must visit if you are a seafood lover. Now the ambiance was nothing to write home to mother about. There were quiet a few ceiling tiles that showed signs of a roof leak throughout the establishment. It almost caused me to leave, because it gave off a mildew smell. The menu items were not cheap and this was a weekday lunch, so I can imagine the prices for dinner. With that said, you would think, the tiles and roof could be repaired and replaced. We plan to revisit in June to see if that problem has been fixed or if this type of maintenance is not essential to the owner(s). read more
