They carefully cleaned and inspected both fireplaces, recommended and replaced the ember wool for one of the units that was clearly deteriorated, and provided a detailed condition report. Last year we'd received a (paid) estimate from a different local sweep who suggested that the only real safe, viable solution to get our fireplace running safely was to have a custom metal liner manufactured by a company in Michigan, to the tune of something like $8500. Needless to say, we put those chimney repairs on hold. Fast-forward to last month. One of our cats decided that hanging out inside the fireplace was big fun! Besides our safety concerns, this resulted in little black paw prints on every surface in the house. It also prompted us to revisit the chimney, and I'm glad we went with Philbrick's! Logs were covered with soot & the home inspector noted unsealed gaps. Mike responded to a text message, and fit us into his schedule within 3 days. He & his son worked together to evaluate our unit. Mike is honest chimney repair vendor. That is the most important message here. Apparently this business is loaded with crooks and scammers. We are selling our house and the buyer hired a separate company to come and do an inpection of our two fireplaces (one is an enclosed firebox, about 5 yrs old, the other is a newly updated original fireplace with a gas insert). Both recently passed city inspection (as we had done a total rehab of the property. ) The buyer's inspection was clearly just looking for ways to gouge us for money (to them for repairs and to the buyer as a credit back). Apparently this happens quite a bit. Mike and his team had recently completed a full cleaning and fire-retardent coating of the inside flue of our DR fireplace, even though it was just gas-powered fire and not wood burning. The Buyer's inspector highlighted a few spots near the top of the chimney (a good 15 feet away from any heat or flame) as an "urgent matter to repair". Mike kindly came in and recoated a couple of spots at no charge. That is an honest guy. We have heard his name from a number of different fp experts that we called as a result of the ridiculous inspection by "the Chimney Doctor" who you should avoid at all costs. Pros: responsive, showed up on time, the work done was good Cons: made a mess in my front yard, mortar came down the chimney and splattering into my living room and the clean up was incomplete, some of the prices were high Overall I don't have a complaint about the work but they made a mess inside my house and in my front yard that I had to clean up, that is not acceptable. Why would they do the work inside the fireplace before repairing the chimney cap with new mortar? A lot of that mortar came down the chimney and made a mess. Don't hesitate to push back on the pricing, $85 to spray some lubricant on my damper was annoying. Will I hire them again? Probably not, there are a lot of options out there. read more

There is nothing worse than hearing scratching inside your chimney from a live unknown creature!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was freaking out! I reached out to Mike on a Sunday (Monday was a holiday) and he came over Tuesday morning at 9am. He was careful covering my hearth and the surrounding area with a moving blanket to keep everything clean and to provide a safe place to put his tools. It was a bird!!! Unfortunately a dead bird but a bird. Whew! Dodged the bullet on that one. More than once, Mike said, "poor little guy". Compassion for the bird that died which meant something to me since my yard has lots of birds. Mike and his assistant came on time and left no dirt on the floor outside the fireplace. Unfortunately the interior of the fireplace was still full of soot and ash when they left and they tried to up sell me a log set and burner for $810 dollars!!! Mike honored his quote of $239 for a chimney cleaning and inspection. It took about 30 minutes for them to complete the work. Mike's assistant sent a brush up the flue by hand, twisting it along the way. I saw soot coming down which was sucked up by the shop vac he had placed in the fireplace. He spent about 5 minutes dusting off the old logs but they were still filthy. He threw away the old embers that were in the fireplace but left the interior floor and walls of the fireplace full of caked on soot and ash. Mike then told me I needed a new gas burner and offered to replace it for $330 dollars and also offered me the above mentioned $810 dollar log and burner package. I was taken aback by the price and decided to do a little research on my own. I went online and found a log set package which included a single pipe gas burner like the one I had for $129, it was on sale marked down from $169. Lastly, they never inspected the exterior of the chimney or the chimney grate above the house. Mike did leave me a message though. He offered to sell me a used burner for $235 dollars. read more
