I've been in the apartment rental business for over 30 years so, having good contractors at my side is a real necessity. Certainly, there are more than a few chimney sweeps in LA, but you can't go wrong with Philbrick's. Keep in mind that If you burn wood regularly in your fireplace, you need a sweep every year! Owner Mike Philbrick and his assistant were punctual, careful, prepared, and knowledgeable--all at a reasonable price. In my case, after cleaning the firebox and flue from ground level, he went on the roof to clean and inspect the chimney cap. His advice on how to use and care for my small fireplace going forward was worth every penny. I always prefer to deal with someone who owns there own business, someone you can deal with personally. Yesterday we had an issue that we never thought possible. Two small kittens somehow fell down into our chimney from the roof and after speaking with the owner, we determined they must have been stuck there for over two days. When we called Mike and told him about our emergency, he didn't even hesitate and was at my house within ten minutes. He knew exactly what to do and after dislodging the chimney flue and vacuuming nearly all of the soot that had collected through the years, he was able to retrieve both kittens. He successfully capped the top of the chimney, then cleaned my fireplace. He's a pro, was very considerate of my house and keeping everything clean, and can now add "kitten hero" to his resume. PS. To top things off, he only charged me for the chimney cap. I'm in real estate and will be sure to recommend Mike for all of my chimney inspections. Great work Mike. read more

Made an appointment and Mike was here 10 minutes early on the day work. He immediately began preparations for an installation of a chimney damper and screen cap including hardware needed in the fire box. This was a very efficient installation, kept inside the living room exceptionally clean and was finished in an hour's time. Mike came out to do a basic chimney sweep. Then proceeded to cancel an appt to do the other work. He had difficulty ordering simple products, claiming that it was going to take 6 weeks to order. Basically he just got busy and put other customer first. I was able to find those same products for around $60 from vendors online like Lowe's, Ace etc, when he was only offering a $200 + custom product, which I never asked for and a long 6 week wait. Basically, he got busy, canceling doing the work for me and then it just got more complicated ( I guess ordering basic product is complicated) more than he was willing to handle because he couldn't just throw up the product that he always does.". I wasn't asking for anything complicated and you obviously don't put the customer first. So continue being busy and I will go elsewhere, anywhere else. So after a $200 (approx) and $1500+ quote of repair and install ... I will go elsewhere for sure. And he wasted my time, making promises he couldn't/didn't keep. So frustrating and annoying. Buyer beware on this one, for sure. read more

What great service! So glad I called. Mike and his son cleaned and inspected two fireplaces. Recommended and made repairs to one that had probably never had any maintenance and had serious safety issues, and a minor repair to the other. No surprises, very transparent and honest work. And such pleasant guys, both of them. Helped me learn about artificial logs and gas burners, gave a catalog and ordering information, and discussed how much useable heat to expect. We'll be picking log sets for both fireplaces and having them back for the installation work. Very fair pricing for the work and quality of service, and not a speck of dust or ashes after they left. I found Philbrick's online. Mike arrived on the appointment day earlier than expected. At that time my gas fireplace set up was really pretty and heated the entire living room really well. It had been working great for 20 years. However, I needed general fireplace maintenance, a new grate, and new lava rock. Mike told me the gas fireplace burner needed replacing and that he had all the parts I needed in his truck. Unfortunately, I just went with his suggestion. I now have a gas fireplace that puts out very little heat. It is decorative, but beyond that it is useless. I played phone tag with Mike a couple of times, and continued to try and reach him, however ultimately he did not return my calls or texts. This mistake cost me over $600. read more

We were referred to Mike by a friend. We had recently bought a house in Gardena and realized that the chimney was badly in need of a sweep. Mike was easy to communicate with regarding scheduling, and he was very punctual. After sweeping the chimney, he found that it had never been properly maintained by the previous owners and had extensive damage that made it unsafe to use. He took pictures of everything and made the time to explain to us in detail what the problems were and what kind of work would be needed to repair it. We got back in touch later in the year and he came by and did the repairs. We now use the chimney regularly on cold nights and we have the peace of mind that it will be safe to use and structurally sound for many years to come. Overall, Mike is very professional and friendly, and he does excellent work.
