Some friends and I ventured out to this restaurant in the Wharf for a birthday celebration. It is on the end of the wharf where it's much quieter. It's a modern Chinese restaurant. It is known for family style servings. The classic dishes you love are served as appetizers and can fill up. I ordered the Creamsicle with a shot of tequila since it is a zero proof drink. For food, I ordered the wonton soup, chicken fried rice, and salt/pepper calamari. The wonton soup was flavorful, and it was filled with chicken wontons. They were soft and seasoned. The broth rounded out the flavor. The chicken fried rice was good. It comes in a small pot that can be shared, but I ate it as my main course. Now on to the calamari. This fell flat to me. It was very chewy, and in my opinion, the sauce served with it is so spicy that it's a mismatch with the calamari. The sauce is really thick, and the calamari was thickly cut, coated, and fried. I don't think I would order that again. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. The service was good overall. We had a large party and he pivoted nicely with the add on with guests. They are new! Opened in June, barely 2 months into business and very nice decor place. We didn't need any reservation, you can get full service at the bar, which is awesome. I always get consistently the same item in every restaurant, so it is easy to compare. The drinks are EXCELLENT! Old fashioned was one of the best tasting ones I have ever had. I wish they had cherry. Also, the ice is huge, so the actual amount of drink you get it smaller yet it is more expensive than every other place at its $20-22 range. Service was weird. She had such a looking-down on you attitude, not in a fun or playful way and dismissive. We were in a great mood so we were super nice to her and the attitude back was uncalled for. Decided to select from my ever increasing list of bookmarks when my friend was ready to honor our annual birthday tradition. We arrived a bit early on a Wednesday evening for our rezzie which gave me time to sit at the bar & check the vibe. The restaurant was bustling and moderately crowded. They have the aesthetics covered. It's a lovely restaurant & I was all smiles as we patiently waited. About 15 min later we were seated by the window and quickly ordered the grand walnut prawn app. Lawd it was delicious! I could've had that & a glass of wine and been just fine. For entreés, we ordered the Chilean sea bass, crispy duck, shrimp fried rice (no crab rice offered), & green beans. My friend's duck was delivered at least 20 min before my sea bass. The duck was under-seasoned & overcooked. I was hungry so I ate some with the brown sauce then felt bad about eating his food... the remaining food was delivered item by item. It was fresh & flavorful but we couldn't escape how disjointed the service was. Extremely disappointing & our server was not around to help! Two separate men tried to drop off fried rice & other items were missed. They also missed the fact that I was celebrating my birthday. We had to ask a couple servers for dessert offerings. All of this blew the mood. The GM stopped by and left his card but offered no real time assistance. The presentation of the baked Alaska was impressive but it was just late. This review is for summer restaurant week only, and does not represent the regular service/menu. Per the management's confession, everything broke down on the last day of restaurant week, aka Friday. We were seated timely with a reservation. Got our water, and then silence. While we got the enjoy the swanky decor and ambiance, our server was nowhere to be seen. We were surrounded by tables receiving preferential treatment, with the executive chef entertaining his friends, and a manager giving all sorts of comps to complaining guests. After what seemed to be eternity, listening to our growling came another manager. He was the only positive of the night, but still could not save the day. The overall dinner experience was close to 2.5 hours. I couldn't tell if we were given different portions due to restaurant week. But we tried the famous chicken satay (tasty, but not traditional, it has a very creamy sauce), the special prawns (very spicy), filet mignon with green beans (beans were tastier than the filet, the filet are tiny strips, but could be any cut with that msg taste), and vegetable fried rice (vegan, no eggs, the only thing that got me semi-full.) After another 40 min break came the half desserts. The tastiest thing I had all night was the coconuty, creamy lychee martini. Restaurant week is to try new places, and it is not an excuse to hide behind. The management took responsibility, and comp'ed the entire meal, so we ended up just tipping. I am surprised that such a trendy place in the middle of the Wharf would not have been better prepped to handle this type of service. read more

We had reservations for dinner to try restaurant week menu. No issues with getting our table, and we were a little early. The interior is very pretty, we liked the little panda chopstick rests, but it was VERY loud. It was very difficult to hold a conversation comfortably, the acoustics were bad. The tables seemed a little cramped..close to each other. Our server was fine and there were busboys and servers around to bring the food and take away plates promptly and fill our cups. We were able to try various items because of the restaurant week menu. For apps, we the chicken lettuce wraps and shrimp satay. The lettuce wraps were pretty good. The filling was tasty and the lettuce gave it a fresh take. The shrimp satay was good too. It had a sweet type of sauce on it and there were 4 jumbo shrimp. We got the fish and filet mignon with a side of vegetable fried rice and the green beans with black bean sauce. Filet was tender and served with some green beans. The fish was a pretty good portion. The eggplant was a little disappointing. The fried rice was a lackluster but the green beans were tasty. Desserts were what we expected of a chocolate cake and a red velvet cake. Came here a week ago for my anniversary and saw the Moët special online (which I wish they'd keep!). I didn't realize it had expired, but the manager answered the phone and still honored it -- amazing start to the night. Service was outstanding. Mya was warm, professional, and completely on top of everything -- my glass never went empty, our table stayed spotless, and she recommended great dishes while still giving us space to enjoy our evening. We had absolutely no wait for our table. As for the service...the hostess who answered the phone and the person who greeted me/answered my questions at the front was not the kindest. At the table, I would say they could do a better job picking up plates that are empty on the table, but overall the service still deserves 5 stars. The ambiance and vice was elegant and everything I wanted for that evening. The food...I liked the calamari the most. I was a bit disappointed the waitress didn't ask me how I wanted my steak and simply chose to bring it out medium rare. I've never eaten medium rare before. That is one reason I'm giving less than 5 stars. The gentleman who was hosting us is a regular, but the 3 of us have never been to the restaurant before. Our experience wasn't 5 stars, but I know the gentleman who we were with highly recommends this restaurant and overall the experience was decent. Exceptional experience! It was our first time at this restaurant. Our server was Andre and he was very helpful. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and walked us through everything with a perfect level of detail. We ordered the kung pao chicken, spicy prawns, and crispy duck. All were great choices. The spicy prawns were probably the favorite of everyone at about a 9.5 out of 10. For a full 10, there was not really any level of "hot" to the spice, so took that down a half point. Taste was on point though, similar to a sweet and sour. The kung pao was also very good, and a bit more savory and darker sauce than the prawns. The crispy duck was wonderful for the overall experience of building the meal was fun. The pancakes were really thin tortilla-type wraps, and the fixings were similar to a fajita experience. Throughout the meal, Andre and the team were super attentive and cleared plates immediately as soon as they were empty. Overall it was one of our favorite experiences in a while. We will definitely be back, and plan to have a bunch of their appetizers that sounded yummy! read more

Nina was the best!! My boyfriend and I went for his birthday and we were celebrating our four year anniversary she made sure we had a great experience there. I ordered the vegetable fried rice to go, and honestly it was delicious. The rice was perfectly cooked and the dish overall was well seasoned and had some good color to it. However, I'm disappointed that it didn't really have many veggies other than green onions and white onions (see attached picture). The rice did have some green beans in it, but it was a very small amount. They did include egg, but I wanted veggie fried rice, not egg fried rice. I was expecting some broccoli or carrots or any other veggies. The worst part is that it cost $17, double the cost of normal takeout. That price may have been fine if I was getting a fried rice with meat, but like I said, it barely even had veggies. I went to the restaurant physically to order the food to go. The servers were very nice and looked like they were working hard. However, the music was a bit too loud, so I wouldn't dine in here. read more

Had a cute date night on a Tuesday at Phillipe Chow and tried an assortment of items from both the standard dinner menu as well as the Tuesday night nine course lobster prefixe menu. We really enjoyed the nine courses for $95/ person and felt like it was an awesome way to explore the menu. Both the salt and pepper lobster and lobster in ginger scallion sauce were noteworthy as was the sleek ambiance of this location. Cocktail list looked pricey but hubby appeared to enjoy his old fashioned while I opted for sparkling water. Parking, of course is expensive but worth it on a Tuesday night to check out the imperial lobster feast here. read more

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. This was hands down the worst dining experience I've ever had -- and calling it "fine dining" is laughable. That label should be removed entirely. We visited during the Sakura Festival, so we expected it to be busy. However, we noticed several empty tables -- especially outside -- as we walked past the restaurant. When we asked for a table for five, we were told there would be a 2.5-hour wait. Fine. We accepted the wait time and showed up early, only to wait again. Meanwhile, the same tables we'd seen earlier were still empty. Once seated, we didn't see our waitress for 30 minutes. She eventually took our drink orders, but another 30 minutes passed and we still didn't have even the most basic items -- like a soda or a cup of ice. We ordered appetizers, and a few of us placed dinner orders at that time. The appetizers arrived before the cocktails -- which we had to remind the staff about. The calamari was rubbery and completely flavorless. No one checked in to take the rest of our entrée orders until we had completely finished the appetizers -- again, not because they were good, but because we were starving. A child at our table was growing increasingly restless, still waiting for food. One drink (a Sprite) and a simple glass of ice were never brought out until we reminded them again. When the entrées finally arrived, the quality was awful. The "crispy duck" was over-fried and flavorless -- half of it was inedible, like chewing on overcooked chicken. The so-called "fresh pancakes" were clearly frozen, with paper sheets between them -- a dead giveaway. To top it off, none of the dirty appetizer plates were ever cleared from the table. We interacted with our server several times, and yet the table remained cluttered the entire meal. No one offered us additional drinks or even asked how things were going. We ordered dessert -- the cheesecake that's heavily featured in their marketing photos -- but they forgot our order. After another long wait and another reminder, three pre-made cheesecakes were finally brought out -- still surrounded by the pile of dirty dishes. The server noticed our frustration and took the dessert off the bill. Even with that gesture, the total came out to nearly $300 for what I can only describe as an absolute disaster of a dining experience. I'm fasting for the month, so I stopped by Philippe Chow for a takeout order. I ordered the tofu stir fry at the bar, and specifically asked for brown rice (not eating white rice due to the fast). My order was brought out with white rice, however. I was told that the brown rice would be an additional $9.00, although I asked for brown rice initially. I let the bartender know that I was fasting, but it didn't matter to them. Not the best customer service, and I paid too much for tofu, vegetables...and white rice that I couldn't eat. Wonderful evening with dear friends who are also foodies in an elegant setting on the Wharf. Many Wharf offerings offer stunning ambience and average, overpriced food, Philippe Chow does its best to rebuke that generalization. We cozied up to the bar where the 4 of us ordered everything from a couple signature cocktails (overly sweet Old Fashioned, but I knew it was going to be) to neat whiskeys to start off. I kind of expected higher end liquor given the restaurant's upscale vibe, but it was probably the most disappointing aspect of our experience. The bartender was welcoming and great, but the drinks and selection were a collective "meh." We selected the $150, 16 course tasting menu, which may seem a little expensive until you start eating. It is definitely an appropriate amount of food for the price point. And think about it - here in the Nation's Capital, 150 a plate at the end of the night is not really a big deal. Familiar Chinese staples with some elevated execution. It could have come out in those delivery carton boxes and still have been quality. Taste? Very good to excellent. The highlights were the chicken satay, green prawns (universal crowd favorite) fried lobster, sea bass and the tableside carved Peking Duck. Though, almost all the starter shared plates were very good and the other entrees were tasty if not monumental. To be clear, there are delivery places that do this just as well, but as a fine dining experience, it was a nice departure to sit down to a filling meal that wasn't trying to impress with small portions of pretty food. All the notes were there with the dumplings, spring rolls, etc. The only truly middling thing was the fried rice which suffered from being next to everything else. The Duck was exquisite and some of the best I've ever had. I am a longtime consumer of Americanized Chinese food and do not want to step on any toes regarding authenticity, but I was impressed with the flavor profiles and preparation across-the-board. I am just saying it was good without any nuanced understanding if it is the real deal. Service was okay - they forgot to bring some things out and were generally courteous if not epically deferential. The entire town is suffering from hiring and keeping knowledgeable waitstaff and that is certainly the case with the sister restaurant's on the boardwalk. Not a dessert person, but the flambé was a bit over-the-top for what you wind up with, but fun! The other desserts were fine. Not the right person to ask. The wine list was decent but probably the lowest value touchstone for the evening. We had a couple Sancerre's that paired nicely with the meal and the sommelier was on point. Overall, very good food, great ambience and okay service. It was worth the tasting menu, I am telling you, but not quite an out-of-body experience that I'll be desperate to try again soon. But that's okay! Still a great, flavorful meal that scratched my itch for a sit-down, elegant (except we kept flinging sauce everywhere) Chinese meal which is hard to find in this town. Visited for the first time with a friend to try their brunch. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. The mimosas were also good too. Unfortunately, with the brunch service being new - I believe the kitchen staff was just trying to keep their head above water. One of the items were ordered never came until we asked about it twice. It then came out twice and ended up being the least favorite item of the day. The music and ambience was great. Our server, Daniel, was great. We ordered Peking Duck 24 hours in advance of our reservation. Shortly after we were seated, a chef came to our table to carefully sliced the bird and served it with plum sauce. The food was great the service was below average and the resturant was beautiful. Our initial waiter hardly came to take care of us. I believe it was her boss sadi , who came by and made sure everything was okay. He ended up taking our order as well as getting us refills when we had to ask a second time. Our waiter only came to our table three times our entire experience and the last time was for the check. The table next to us also complained about the service here stating that this was way worse than any other time they have been here. But again sadi to the rescue making sure they had their extra limes and making sure their food was here on time. He checked on everyone in our section as well as other tables just to make sure we were enjoying ourself. He really was amazing I almost ordered the same thing twice he broke the menu for us gave us some recommendations. He checked on us frequently , laughed with us and made the experience worth while. If he isn't the manager he needs to be promoted for going above and beyond to make sure that everyone had a great experience. Our initial waiter did come back once we found out they were short staffed and she was running a good chunk of the tables in the resturant on her own. She apologized and was very sweet towards us. We ended our night with a red velvet cake which you need to just take home because it was wowowow so amazing. Actually the best red velvet cake I ever had. My spouse hates red velvet cake and he was soooo amazed at how good this one was. The food saved the day ! The dumpling sampler came with a veggie, shrimp and o believe a chicken dumpling. They were all immaculate ! The spring rolls and the black sauce was amazing ! Everything was cooked to perfection and the sauce stole the show. We ordered the Beijing chicken which was absolutely amazing tender juicy well seasoned covered in a great sauce. The nine season shrimp actually isn't spicy but it was breaded so well and cooked and seasoned very well. If you ever need a cheat meal this is definitely the place to come to how amazing ! The fried rice was good and flavorful but the lo mein was subpar very bland and sadly came to us cold. Thanks to the sweet lady who always came back to us to give us new dish wear before we could even think of it. Five of us did the bucketlisters Moët & Satay on the Wharf: A Luxe Waterfront 4 course Dining & Champagne Experience at Philippe Chow DC. To start for every 2 people you are supposed to receive one bottle of Moët & Chandon Champagne and if it's an odd number of people 2 additional cocktails. However we didn't want champagne and they were gracious enough to substitute 2 drinks for each person instead. For the first two courses and the last course you get everything on the menu and for the 3rd course you pick your individual entree. I enjoyed almost everything that came out, ate all the edamame before I took the photo, and started taking photos after we started eating so sorry ‍. The only thing that wasn't my cup of tea was the chicken satay; it was well cooked and moist which isn't always the case with satay but the sauce tasted buttery and the chicken and sauce could've used more seasoning. For an entree I shared the sweet and sour chicken and spicy pepper mignon with one of my friends and they were delicious but I will admit I was extremely, happily, full by the time the entree came out even though the previous courses were small plates. The red velvet cake was delicious and moist and for my friend's birthday they did a baked Alaska presentation that was nice however the alcohol on the baked Alaska takes over the flavor and it ends up tasting like a shot of alcohol which if I wasn't full may not have been an issue but I will say if you would actually like to try baked Alaska this isn't the one to base your opinion of it on. I absolutly recommend. From the moment we walked in the ambiance and environment was saturated with high expectations and great service. We were seated quickly (all on time) with our reservation. We were met with an experienced waiter or was so great, he was training another gentlemen. They were both so helpful, Kind, and conversational. He explained the menu to us in detail with some added character, with recommendations. He realized we were there celebrating a promotion for a friend and zoned in on the attention. We enjoyed the lighting and even when the accomodated our HOT flashes (Table full of women). They allowed us to sing to her and we filled our bellies. The FOOD is PHENOMENAL!! First thing's first, if you can Uber here, do it lol. Parking at the Wharf in general is usually chaotic, and this was no exception. It took me 15 minutes to find a parking spot lol. I also recommend making a reservation here. Check-in was easy, and we didnt have a wait. Now the fun part! Daniel was our server, and he was great from beginning to the very end! All of his recommendations were a hit, and he was very efficient with closing us out when we were ready to head out! We came here for brunch ($75pp/$96ish after taxes and gratuity). It includes bottomless mimosas and apps. If you LOVE pulp, you will enjoy the original mimosa here. If you dont like pulp, pick something else the amount of pulp in the original mimosa is obnoxious lol. Daniel accidentally brought me the midori one, and I decided to try it because why not? It was surprisingly good! Honestly, we liked all of the mimosa options except the OJ one lol. For the apps we got the following: - shrimp spring rolls: delicious and they had a good amount of shrimp in them! - soup dumplings: DELICIOUS - crispy duck salad: the duck to salad ratio was annoying, but the duck was good lol. It's the only one I would not order again. - lobster pancake: my friends loved this! - Veggie lo mein: SO good For entrees we got the following: - Sweet and sour salmon: Delicious and perfectly cooked - Crispy beef: This was the best recommendation Daniel made all day. It is DELICIOUS. Not too heavy and perfectly cooked. Not too chewy at all. Came here mid week for dinner. The place was really loud and I didn't feel the vibe. Although the welcoming receptionist was nice. The bar was loud. The dining room was loud. When my friend arrived, they seated us in a more quiet back room and it was heaven. I personally hate the 2-top tables against a wall jammed inbetween other 2- tops. I was especially concerned because we tend to over order and a 4-top is needed. I mentioned it to the waiter but he said not to worry. Luckily the two tables on each side of us left before we got the duck and they pushed another table over. Note to self- request 4-top in reservation. The lychee martini was good. Since my friend had been there many times, he steered me toward the cilantro dumplings. Wow! They were good. We also ordered the pork ones. They were good but I wish I ate less and saved more room. Next course we got the yummy bok Choy Choi which were coooked perfectly and the Salt and pepper fish which was incredible. Would get both again! They served white rice in a beautiful silver lidded container. Then we got the duck which they carve table side. Awesome! The duck had so much meat!!! They offered to refill any pancakes and sauce upon request. I REALLY wanted the cotton candy baked Alaska. But there is a crazy story about a dinner guest from the fire dept who pointed out the size of the flame and now they are obtaining a permit. So disappointed! Oh well. Entree - orange chicken and filet mignon Dessert - chocolate cake and red velvet The portions were pretty decent. The food was okay , nothing special. Mixed dumpling appetizer was very doughy and mostly tasteless. Brown sauce was pungent and too vinegary. Nine seasons prawns were properly cooked with a very good sauce, but the prawns were breaded too heavily which greatly detracted from a potentially excellent dish. Special prawns were very tasty. However, it was ordered by someone who is sensitive to spicy foods. The sliced vegetables in the dish were scattered with slices of dried chilis which produced unwanted coughing fits. There was no indication this was a spicy dish. They do not have iced tea on the menu. However the bartender was able to make me some. Overall very expensive. I am a chef. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures. 2/5. There were some good elements but I will not be returning. We ordered the chicken satay, scallion pancakes, bok choy, and crispy duck. The chicken satay looked and tasted like candied chicken (in a very bad way), and the peanut sauce did not taste like peanut. The menu specified three pieces but they tried to give us two pieces, and looked confused when I asked where the third was. I shouldn't have said anything, we didn't even eat the third. Everyone around us had ordered it, and nobody had finished it. The scallion pancakes were good but the sauce was very disappointing. Scallion pancakes need to be served with either a sesame soy, a chili ginger or maybe a peanut sauce. What they gave us was a tasteless, clear sauce that went unidentified (the sauce as not listed on the menu). The bok choy was not completely cleaned and the sauce was slightly clumpy. It seemed like they used a sort of starch to thicken it but didn't fully cook it out. The crispy duck was good but far too underserved to be worth $40. It was served with house made pancakes which were also good, however each pancake was separated by a thin piece of silicon-lined parchment paper. One of the people in my party accidentally ate some of the paper, and the manager informed us that his customers OFTEN EAT THE PAPER..........you'd think they would have warned us, especially since I am sure that it is not food-grade. While the manager seemed to think it was funny, my friend was so disgusted that she was unable to continue eating. We didn't order the fortune cookie red velvet cake, which is probably a good thing since everyone around us had ordered it and had left leaving over half of the dessert behind. read more

This place has been on my list to check out, so we came here for my birthday. Loved the ambiance and our server was great. We tried the beef lettuce wraps for appetizer, they were pretty good. I tried their future version of an old fashion which was good. They also have us champagne since it was my birthday I got the lobster fried rice and king crab legs for my entree. My boyfriend got the spicy chicken. The crab was really good, the sauce really set it off. The lobster in the fried rice was cooked perfectly. The spicy chicken was flavorful and very tender. Definitely recommend this place for a special occasion or date night! read more

Our first time at Phillipe Chow and it was amazing. Nice clean restaurant. Good atmosphere. The food was incredible. The hot and sour soup was the best hot and sour soup I've ever had. It had a variety of spices in it - very flavorful. We also had duck spring rolls and calamari. For our entrees we ordered spicy lobster noodles (amazing!), pineapple fried rice and shrimp lo mein. Our waiter Julio was great and took good care of us. Julio - our server - was amazing and took care of us. He explained the menu well and asked to make sure we were ready for entrees to come out. And he kept checking back in to ask if we were enjoying our meals. He was very approachable and helpful. I wasn't sure initially which restaurant at the Wharf to go so I picked Philippe Chow on a whim. We definitely picked the right one with Philippe Chow! read more

Phillipe Chow, bravo. Went to celebrate a queen's 40th, and we had a birthday menu, family style. Lettuce wraps super flavorful. Spring rolls and chicken satay were cool as well. 2nd course- Thai chili shrimp, Beef and green beans, chicken (with walnuts), Chilean sea bass- YUM. Third was duck. And finished with a variety of cakes, ice cream, and sorbet like they thought there was any more room in my belly!!! How dare. But truly a great experience with great wait service and a beautiful venue. read more
