This time around it was awful. I have been here a few times and the first time (when it opened), it was great. The second time good. This time awful. I never seen any place go downhill that fast. I went on a Friday night for my birthday. It was EMPTY. The service was awful. Our waiter was in the air and forgetful and disappeared a lot. They add gratuity so they don't even try to be good. I sat down prior to the rest of the party. I waited about 25 mins for the others to find parking. The waiter did not come to my table the whole time to ask me for anything. The drinks always take forever. The food was awful. I have no idea what happened. The crispy beef was soggy and saucy. It has no flavor. The dumplings and spring rolls use to be great and they were not this time around. Everything was soggy and did not taste fresh. The fried rice was bland. I asked for a cup of pineapple juice and they gave me hot pineapple juice. The bill took forever to come. We literally sat there for like 30 mins. Then when we were ready to give payment, he disappeared again for another 20 mins and we had to go find him. When we found him, he was startled like he totally forgot he had to be a waiter, we should not have to pay at the hostess stand because our waiter was no where to be found. Did you know on Tuesdays there is a 9 course lobster menu? There is, but you have to ask up front. We found out via TikTok and made a reservation. The restaurant is in the wharf and parking was easy enough in the garage. There is actually one right next to to the restaurant. The restaurant was packed at 7pm on a Tuesday during the week in between Christmas and New Years. Lots of birthday celebrations and family gatherings. The restaurant is very pretty and intimate. We ordered our lobster menu and was served with the first course within minutes. I'm telling you, this isn't just lobster taste, there are huge chunks of lobster in every course. If you have done many tasting menus in the district you typically truly only get a little bit of each course. Not here. It was so great to walk out with some leftovers (in their comically huge bags). My first experience in Philippe Chow DC was absolutely amazing. The food is so delicious, I highly recommend trying the Spicy pepper Mignon & Chicken Lettuce Wraps. While the food is great, the drinks are even better, the lychee martini might be my favorite of all time. The service was excellent as well. The manager, Sadi, was very welcoming to begin with, and he consistently checked in to ensure everything was going well. The best server, Daniel, recommended a delicious wine for the table that was top tier. I found the staff to be very friendly and sweet. Beautiful ambiance. Philippe Chow makes the best peking duck I've had in DC and that alone is 5 star worthy! I also had soup dumplings, bok choy, and Mr. Cheng's noodles (a delicious dish that was like Chinese-style jiajiangmien) and would reorder every single item. We had a bit of a roller coaster dinner. Menu looked great and service and appetizers were quick, hot and scrumptious. Then service slowed down as they had some staffing issues. The duck took almost twice as long as listed. Then dinner came and it was excellent and worth the wait. And the dessert was a fun show! I recommend this restaurant as long as you are not in a hurry. Also, it was warm on the patio and they could not turn off the fire feature which was making us uncomfortable. So maybe avoid those seats during the day. read more

Last night was my first visit to Philippe Chow on the SW wharf. It's got a great upscale and modern ambiance. Julio was our server, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that he was the most professional, attentive, and accommodating server I've had in the last 15 to 20 years, just a class act. Then I mentioned that it was also my birthday, and I feel like they really rolled out the red carpet. The best dish was the spicy pepper mignon, which was absolutely delicious, and the cotton candy baked Alaska was quite the flaming show for dessert. If you are a fan of champagne, a bottle of Veuve is only $90, which is barely more than you pay in some stores. The rest of the staff was also top notch. I will be returning to Philippe Chow, and I will most definitely be requesting Julio as my server once more. read more

We pre-paid for a "Valentine's dinner experience" at 7:30. We had to wait 90 minutes at the bar to be seated. The lychee martini that was being ordered all around ran out by 8pm. The entrance and bar became packed and couples were outside in the cold due to the extreme delays for pre-paid tables. We were finally called up to get our table at 9pm. I heard the hostess telling new arrivals that it was going to be "awhile" because people were "staying at their tables for three hours". This turned out to be sort of true, my husband and I did indeed have to wait at our table for 3 hours for all dishes and the check to come out. The restaurant was dramatically overbooked and the hostess blamed the wait on its patrons. Our tiny table was less than a foot away from the tiny tables on the left and right of us. We all joked that we were going to get to know each other very well. It was loud so you had to speak up to be heard over the music. Everyone was on top of each other. Not a romantic vibe. The menu was brought and we said we were there for the Valentine's experience (prepaid $300+). Turns out you just order from the regular menu and you get a champagne in a plastic cup. I anticipated maybe a 4 course meal of tiny platters- something special from a renowned chef. Instead, we got unsalted bok choy, dehydrated eggplant, scallion pancakes with no hint of scallion, truffle soup dumplings that had split open pouring out all their soup, crispy beef that had almost no beef (99% fried dough) and a fish that was good but not great. We also ordered the duck and it took ages. By then the bok choy was ice cold but we'd kept it for when the duck would arrive so we didn't have to eat duck by itself. The duck was forgettable, the skin was soggy instead of very crispy. No flavor, thick plum sauce. The duck was served on a plate with giant spoons, no fork. It was worse than Chinese takeout and it all lacked the flavor and spice I've come to know from good Chinese food. I am far from picky when it comes to restaurants but this place could not convince me to come back at any price point. Overall, for over $400 I was expecting an amazing meal and great space. To be so let down but such bad food was painful and the extreme wait and tight quarters killed the romance. My husband and I made a long drive and planned a fun night but it turned out to be memorable for all the wrong reasons. To top it all off, I woke up a few hours later violently ill and cannot bring myself to even look at the leftovers in the fridge. I'm sad to write such a sorry review for them but so much went wrong beyond a mere scheduling failure, and at such a high price point and on a special night. We came here for dinner last night. We ordered a bottle of white wine. The wine was alright, but it wasn't chilled. I wish I had tried one of the cocktails instead. One of my favorite foods is Peking Duck, so we came here specifically to try Philippe's Peking Duck. It isn't the best duck I've ever had, but it is delicious! The duck was carved table-side, and was served with paper-thin pancakes, plum sauce, green onions, and cucumber. The duck was very fatty, since the fat hadn't completely rendered. Obviously, this is an upscale restaurant, reserved for special occasions. The decor is beautiful, though the tables are pretty close together. The service was good; there was a period of time when our server didn't come to check on us, but it had gotten busier. Overall, it was a nice dinner in a beautiful restaurant. read more

The sits are too close together it makes it hard for you to enjoy your meal if you order multiple plates and it's no privacy between conversation. The presentation of the food was immaculate but not so much in taste. The rice was the most flavorful. I had the ribs which lacked so much flavor, seemed like they just threw some sticky sauce over and served them. The filet and strings beans were ok, a lil too salty. The chicken was good. The word that comes to mind when I think of Philippe Chow is.. ambitious. And while I get the vision, they didn't quite hit the mark on all aspects of the experience. The feel of the restaurant is very sophisticated and mature, with dark coloured furniture and accents of gold (e.g the lamps that are found on every table, that add to the intimacy of the setting). However the bathroom was so small that a "line" of one person waiting for a stall and two extra people by the sink resulted in said person getting hit by the door upon my attempted entry. Additionally it was inadequately lit. While I am a sucker for style and pizzaz, utility shouldn't be sacrificed for such things; as I could barely see my reflection in the mirror. The service wasn't exactly exceptional either. There was a pretty long wait before we were greeted by our server and there were notable laps of his presence in between ordering our drinks and food, despite being around and surveying the tables from time to time. I also couldn't help but notice the stain of what I could only presume was food on his white overcoat; neither here nor there for me but it did catch my attention. Nevertheless he was pretty genial, and was attentive when there was a mix up with our order. The food was the highlight, and the créme de la créme of all reviews, so let's get to it shall we: it should be noted that my family and I visited for restaurant week and opted for that menu. Among us we had the Lo Mein, Shrimp Satay, Branzino, Garlic Broccoli, Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Vegetable Fried Rice. The VFR was extremely tasty and it was the consensus that it was the best tasting dish brought to the table. Every other item listed got thumbs up from my family except for the Branzino which was unfortunately described as "bland" and "in need of some love" from people in my party that had it. Would I attend again? Yes. Would I recommend to someone? Sure. However, if you're striving for excellence then you need to do it wholeheartedly and I can say pretty confidently that they are not there yet. read more

Location is key when it comes to restaurants, at least in my book, and the revamped DC waterfront is fresh and new, which makes for a better experience. I've heard of Philippe Chow, but have never had the occasion or desire to try it out. My wife was excited when she heard they were opening up a location in DC. I confess to being ambivalent about it - if I want Chinese, there's a few options that I happen to like. I wasn't expecting anything really when we first went. The restaurant itself is a gorgeous thing - lots of light let in by big windows, dark wood elements but instead of chrome, there's a lot of gold tones. There's indoor and outdoor seating, both make good use of the limited space; it can get a bit tight when its full, but it stops just shy of being uncomfortable. Enough about that though, the food is what really made this place get that 4th star out of me. If I had to sum it up succinctly, I would say that this is carryout fare taken to a much higher level. From the presentation to the flavors, its a cut above any Chinese you've had that caters to American tastes. Nothing frozen or canned, you can taste the freshness of the ingredients and it is all prepared very, very well. They have an extensive drink menu too - if you've never had it, I suggest trying the French 75. Its refreshing, thirst quenching and tasty, but be careful - it has a bit of a punch and you'll go through them like the best summer drink you've ever had. Philippe Chow himself came out to greet all the diners; that was unexpected, but pleasant. I can't recall the last time the chef came out to greet the dining crowd, its a nice touch. Of course he's not always going to be there, he has other PCs that I'm sure he visits from time to time. We tried out a few of the menu entrees just to get a feel for what to expect; we had the House Mignon, which I found to be a bit salty; the scallion pancakes were not what I expected - they were more like a deep fried naan bread with scallions folded in and a lightly sweet sauce to dip it in, but the Kung Pao chicken was exceptional. Lightly fried and adorned with a tasty, spicy red sauce, the chicken was slightly crisply as well as tender and juicy and the taste buds just perked right on up! We ordered garlic broccoli just to get some veg on the table. The fried rice is also excellent - I believe its the quality of the ingredients that sets this food apart from your usual carryout fare. The portions are generously sized. It had better be the case too - the price to dine is high. Don't come here looking to eat on a budget, you're going to spend some money! We were looking for an upscale dining experience. The website portrays this to be so with all the language about dress code and how management will enforce it, etc. We got there, and it was kind of like the old high school prank where your invitation says it's a costume party, but it really isn't, so the joke is on you. Baseball caps, t-shirts, and shorts were in the house at 7pm on a Thursday evening. In addition, you are also blasted with loud disco/techno music the minute you step inside. Ambience was nowhere to be found. Despite the disconnect over the ambience, we held out hope for the food. How can I put this kindly? My local Chinese carryout has better food. My SO ordered the hot and sour soup as the starter. It was good but not much different than what a local carryout provides. And, as a starter, the portion was simply too large. The bowl would be sufficient if you were having that as your meal. I ordered the steamed vegetable dumplings. They were crying for some garlic and/or ginger. They could not stand on their own merit without some sauce. The mains were even more baffling. My SO ordered the crispy duck. I think at some point before it arrived at our table, it was crispy, perhaps around lunchtime? It was literally sliced, dry, lukewarm duck on a white, blank plate. In a separate steamer were the pancakes, and in another small dish was a stack of sliced scallion. A dab of plum sauce was in another small dish. It was boring to look at and just sad. My meal fared no better. I ordered Kung Pao chicken. The best part of it was the peanuts and the side of white rice. Several hours later, I'm still thinking about it and trying to figure out how in the heck, they managed to ruin the chicken! It had this weird, processed like texture to it. As if maybe it had been in a brine for days that then changed the texture to this alien life form. If it had been a blind taste test, not a person in the world would have guessed the substance was chicken. I'm not even joking, it was incredibly bad. I never thought a McDonald's chicken nugget would be voted superior over anything..but..... On a positive note, our server was lovely. Unfortunately, she also had several tables, and we didn't see much of her. This mess of a meal wasn't worth calling the manager over for. Nothing they could do would have fixed this. The problems here are systemic to the entire operation. Save your money and skip this place. It just did not live up to any level of excellence or creativity. There was nothing innovative about the food we ordered (although, to be fair, the table next to us had a cotton candy dessert they flamed - so that was innovative) and the luxury and indulgence they say they provide is MIA. read more

A disappointing experience on my first visit to Philippe Chow at the Wharf, not because of the food but because of the service. At the restaurant's prompting (via OpenTable) we had pre-ordered a Peking Duck for our pre-theatre dinner at 6:30 (we had an 8pm curtain across the street at Arena Stage). We told the waiter this when he sat us at 6:30 -- but the duck didn't come until 7:35, giving us essentially 15 minutes to eat our (quite expensive) entree. The waiter had apologized earlier for the delay and said a dessert would "be on me" but we didn't even have time to receive it. And since we were going directly to the theatre we really couldn't box up the significant leftovers to take home. The duck was very good, but bolting it down so fast, we barely had time to notice. By the way, I would have sent this note directly to the restaurant rather than posting it on Yelp, but the website provides no way to email the restaurant directly. Another disappointment. read more

Our server was amazing and very helpful attentive to our large party. The ambience was nice indoors as well as being by the wharf. Parking can be tricky and my glass of wine was over $30. On the rare occasions that I write a review less than 4 stars I'd like the business managers to check out my others reviews to note that Spencer H is in the praise business and not the complaint business. My friend was stuck on where she wanted to go for her birthday dinner when I remembered that the hot new DC waterfront restaurant Philippe Chow had recently opened. She was all in because she also bookmarked Philippe and had heard all the buzz. Somewhat surprised they had an open 7:45 slot available, we jumped all over it. We arrived a little early for our reservation and the place was poppin! We started off at the bar for a couple pre-dinner drinks and to do a little people watching. Philippe Chow is gorgeous. They have done an excellent job designing this DC hot spot and it fits in nicely with the other surrounding high end restaurants adorning the revamped Wharf. It's kind of hidden to the naked eye, so just look for Hell's Kitchen and Philippe is right beside it. The host came and got us once our table was ready and we were escorted to our window seats. Nothing like looking at cool boats while dining. We orded the prawns as our appetizer and they were outstanding. Up to this point, Philippe was a big fat 5! I'm a Duck lover and although Philippe has a very nice menu, I was stuck on the roasted duck. My friend decided on one of the three Seabass options. We paired our meals with the suggested string beans and shrimp fried rice. My BIGGEST pet peeve, even when dining at a "hole in the wall", is when my entrées come out staggered. I'm even more agitated when I'm spending a lot of money and you expect a certain level of service. My meal came out at least 8-10 minutes before my friend's. I'm not stingy so we both ate off my plate and could have easily finished off that poor duck before her Seabass showed up but we forced ourselves to stop.. Smh! We witnessed the exact same thing happen to the patrons next to us, funny thing is, they ordered the exact same meal!! LOL My duck was not at all what I expected. It was shaved duck and overcooked. They give you thinly sliced pita bread so I ate them like a fajita WTH?!? It didn't have any flavor so thank goodness the brown sauce on the side saved the day. My friend's Chilean Seabass was good but I've definitely had better.. IJS!. Our server told us he was new but he seemed like he was new to the industry. We rarely saw him and when I asked our secondary server for my customary dinner beer, it never showed up...oh well, probably didn't need it anyway.. Lol. Philippe has a cool outdoor setup and we were surprised that no one was dining out there on such a mild August evening. Everyone wants to check out the "new kid on the block", so I'm glad we got that out of the way.. Lol! This is an extremely rare occasion where I'm giving a place 2 stars and I'll consider coming back, but in reality, if I want dynamite Asian cuisine with the service to match, I'll just go to Shoto.. Ambiance is fantastic, high ceilings and warm wood. Location at the Wharf insures competition. The food is most important of course. I was solo at the bar and not too hungry. The bak Choy was just perfect. The honey barbecue ribs were very stringy, more suited for steaming (It is without the traditional sauce but maybe this is the fusion style). The scallion pancakes were deep fried and somewhat crisp, another new style not to my taste. All the dishes were generous. I had a Laphroig scotch to start and continued because there wasn't a red wine to my taste. Two staff members raised this review by at least one star. 1) The bartender noticed the way I ate and credited me for a dish. 2) It was a bitter cold dark evening. Newly opened DC restaurants always get a bad reputation. I thought this place was going to not be that great because they sat us 20 minutes after my reservation time and the server took 20 additional minutes to come over and give us water. Once we got our water, everything went fine! Started off with the vegetable spring rolls, which were delicious. The calamari tasted fresh, but we did not enjoy the sauce that came with the calamari, it was extremely salty. We ordered the baby greens salad, sweet & sour chicken, and steak with green beans. Honestly everything came out hot and fresh, everything was shareable which was my favorite because we got to try a little bit of everything. The drinks were made well and the staff was extremely attentive. The major con is that it was so crowded, the tables were so close together, that caused the restaurant to be very loud since everyone was talking over each other, but it got quieter as people left. I would go back and hang out at the bar possibly. I think this is a great setting for a small group dinner or date night. They are newly opened and extremely busy so just keep that in mind! read more

I have been looking forward to trying Philippe since it opened so we decided to make reservations for our next girl night. The ambiance was very nice and the hosted greeted us immediately. We were sat immediately and given the option to sit indoor or outdoor. We opted for indoor. Our server was Terrence and he was knowledgeable and prompt. Our friend was running behind and he was very patient and made cocktail suggestions while talking through the cocktail menu. We started with a Casamigos Lemon Drop and it was perfect. To start we ordered the Salt & Pepper Calamari, Wok Fried Pork Dumplings and Shrimp Dumplings. The pork dumplings were packed with flavor and my favorite. The calamari was good but the sauce is where all the flavor was. The shrimp dumplings weren't for us. We didn't like the texture of the shrimp inside and had zero flavor. We also ordered the Split King and it was bomb. Next, we ordered the Nine Seasons Spicy Prawns, Sweet And Sour Chicken, Vegetable Lo Mein and Broccoli. The sweet and sour chicken was my favorite. I loved the depth of flavors. The lo mein was very good as well. The drinks, sweet and sour chicken, lo mein and fried pork dumplings were the stars of the show for me. I plan to come back for a date night and I would recommend dining here. I deducted one star from my review because the women's bathroom was disgusting in my opinion. It was also too dark and I suggest brighter lighting. Also, I noticed their website says 20% gratuity added to parties of 5 or more but we were a party of 3. Drinks were good though their version of a lychee martini was way too coconut-y for me. The dumplings were average. Ordered fried dumplings and they tasted at if they were steamed then fried. The prawns were very fresh but were bland underneath the sauce. Crunchy beef was good but it's breaded, fried, and sauced and you could taste the oil they were fried in. The shrimp fried rice tasted old and like it was from the spot on the corner. The crab. The crab was terrible. I have never in my life not finished crab legs. These were $100. Like what? New restaurant at the wharf. This is the second location the other is in NYC. I really enjoyed the fried rice both the veggie and shrimp. I wish the shrimp were a little bigger, but they were great. I didn't love the salt and pepper cod. I wish it was a little less salty. We sat at the bar and they were nice enough to lower the bar to handicap height so my wife could sit comfortably. The bartenders were so nice. Mya made me a hugo which she hadn't heard of before it was super tasty. They serve the full menu at the bar, so if there is a wait you may be able to have a nice meal there. read more

Old guard Chinese a La Peking Gourmet with Wharf views and ambiance. This is a beautiful restaurant where most of the seats I saw had a view of the wharf and water. And that's why we are here right? Phillipe by Phillipe Chow (not to be confused with Mr Chow's) is the latest upscale, big city offering to hit DC. I'm very critical of some cuisines because we have very good international fare in the area. My favorite is the aforementioned in Falls Church. Our server had a wonderful knowledge for such a new restaurant and gave wonderful recommendations and was able to guide us through selections when we were indecisive. We dined small plate style with a selection of the prawns they are known for, dumplings, a veggie, and both crispy and grilled beef. All of these were great. We also got the chicken satay and... not so great for my texture sensitive palette. It was thinly sliced and it seemed coated but it was mushy and drenched in what was called a creamy peanut sauce but the peanut got lost in the sauce. With the bad out of the way I can say I enjoyed every thoughtful part of my dinner. Every other texture was great from the flaky prawn breading, the tender dumpling, the the crisp bok choy and green bean, the tender filet, the sweet and sticky crispy beef-- finely slivered for perfect proportion of each flavor. I will return because I want to try the Peking duck (or chicken) and many other traditional options on the menu. read more

My first visit was for restaurant week. I'm honestly not sure I'd go without the deal because the prices are outlandish on the regular menu. The atmosphere and service are impeccable. The food is good but I do believe overpriced. My party overall was happy though. The cocktails are also overpriced but ARE very good. For me honestly it's kind of absurd but the chocolate peanut butter cake is the main thing I want to go back for!!!!! I didn't expect such an outstanding dessert at an Asian restaurant. If you like peanut butter and chocolate, it's a must. The shrimp satay was also excellent. Fried rice was too dry and sweet and sour "special prawns" were only ok. We were recommended by a friend who knows we love good food. We ordered the salt and pepper calamari and beef dumplings for our appetizer. Then we both got the sea bass ( Chilean) it was thinly sliced half had bean purée and the other had garlic and ginger. Delicious!!!! I had brown rice and hubby had white rice. We both had a ole fashion smoked. All in all we give it a 10/10! Nahim our waiter was nice and knowledgeable. The decor was beautiful. The food was amazing ... the service was okay, but lacking the pizazz of the New York location. Simple things such as clearing the table after appetizers has to be addressed. The ambiance was reflective of the original location and the waiters uniforms were clean and pressed. read more

The perfect spot for my birthday dinner. This was my first time here and I was very pleased. The service was very good with our waitress who was very friendly, helpful, attentive. They have a super efficient system of clearing finished plates and flatware so your table is less cluttered. I appreciated that. The food was good, served hot and timely. Our birthday party of 6 received outstanding service from Sebastian and Sadi, making our birthday girl feel so celebrated & providing a great space for a fun celebration. I will certainly be back to try more of the menu and for the great vibes in this place. I genuinely recommend every dish we got- but ultimate favorites were the sweet & sour chicken, black bean prawns, and the crispy cauliflower (with the most amazing spicy red sauce) which our server, Sebastian, recommended. Food for the most part is pretty good, with the exception of a few dishes. The crispy duck spring rolls are delicious, as is the crispy fried tofu and nine spices prawns. No surprise, the prices are exorbitant for the quantities - eye boggling. The crispy duck we were so excited for was dry and almost flossy. The bronzino plating was the most ugly thing ever - someone just gave up. Our main waiter Terrance was great - knew the menu well, made recommendations, and was friendly and professional. The kitchen service staff actually delivering/serving the food requires an immense amount of help/training. Hot sour soup almost careened out onto one of us. One person chopped up Mr. Cheng's noodles in the most inelegant way possible - the dish looked so unappetizing after. The lid to the rice urn was dropped and almost hit another person's leg. You would expect 5* service for the arm and leg they charge, the service was embarrassing and lost most of the star rating here. First I would like to say the food was magnificent. We had the duck and other side and appetizers everything was delicious. The restaurant was and is an upscale restaurant, however even tough the food was delicious the area we sat in the back had to large parties. One party kept the conversations as not to disturb the other patrons and the party of around 15 thought they were at a bar or a sporting event. The manager on Saturday evening (around 6ish) knew the folks and as far as I could see only acknowledged that party and felt no need to either offer to move us or ask them to lower the noise. When my sister spoke to him he was very non chala about it. The group started with maybe 6 people but kept growing until they reached about 15. The manaher kept adding tables and chairs to accommodate them which was not a problem however we were not in a stadium nor were they sitting at the bar. The area was too small for the amount of noise being created by the group. It was very rude. That is why I rated a 3 star. read more
