Stay away from the meat dishes! My wife ordered the Steak Frites with New York strip steak ($32) and I ordered the Beef Bourguignon ($27). Both of our meats were tough and lacking flavor. We asked a server what grade of meat we were eating and were told that we were eating "Select"-grade meat. You know, the kind that's below "Prime" and "Choice" on the meat grade chart. I was unfortunately disappointed with my lunch experience. I ordered the Salade Maison with mixed greens, grape tomatoes, carrots, and Dijon vinaigrette, and added chicken for an additional $10. The greens did not taste very fresh, and the salad overall was quite dry and lacking in flavor. There was barely any dressing, and the chicken was very plain but surprisingly salty. Given the price, I expected fresher ingredients and more attention to flavor and seasoning. I'm sharing this as constructive feedback because I think the dish could be improved significantly with fresher greens, a proper amount of dressing, and better-seasoned chicken. I was hoping to start my weekend with a great lunch, so this experience was particularly disappointing. Very cute place in old town. We just returned from a trip to Paris, so I was hesitant to try Colorado French cuisine. Very glad I did, and you will be, as well. Strive was excellent. Our server knew every detail of every menu choice and had solid pairing recommendations. The food stands out. Im a French Onion soup afficiando, and the had the best flavor profile of any I've tried--clear winner. It could have used a touch less salt, but the herbs made up for it. My wife had the eggs with smikes salmon and it was perfectly done. I had the Nicoise salad which was a risk since I have a big appetite. I was full, and the taste was awesome. We were here for lunch and definitely intend to try dinner here to see if it's just as good. No reason to believe it won't be. Joie de vivre!!! read more

Normally I love this restaurant. I tried messaging directly and it impossible. I do not like the menu change. All my favorites are gone. We loved the mushroom mouse/pate, ratatouille, and salmon dinner with fresh vegetables. All are gone and should be staples. The salmon was replaced with a small piece of salmon and then orecchiette pasta with pesto and smoked salmon. It's salmon overload, heavy and I was told it's a summer menu. Disappointing. I'll keep an eye on the menu and wait for a change. This was one of my favorite restaurants in Fort Collins. read more

We visited this cute French bistro for dinner. The service was very friendly and prompt, and the atmosphere is very nice. It wasn't too loud and was nice for a calm dinner. Two of us had the bouillabaisse, which had a decent amount of seafood (one piece of cod, three mussels, and two shrimp) but was lacking in any real flavor. The bread with rouille spread was the best part of the meal. I would suggest ordering something else. The steak frites was the other dish we ordered, and the steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The sauce and fries were both good. We did not order dessert, but nearby tables seemed to enjoy them. Overall, worth a visit, but some entrees may be better than others. read more

We decided to try a new to us restaurant for our anniversary and we had not had any French cuisine for quite some time, so Philippe seemed like a good choice! The good... our server was attentive and prompt and friendly. The duck was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. The steak was also prepared to my husband's liking. The hazelnut mousse was quite a lovely treat. The not so good... with the exception of the duck and the mousse, nothing was very flavorful. I was very excited to have escargot, but was quite disappointed in the extreme lack of flavor. My husband said his steak was cooked perfectly, but lacked imagination in the seasoning. (He did say his fries were very good). With the exception of the duck, my entire meal was bland and my potato haystack was very overcooked. As for the ambience, it has a cheery (albeit noisy), friendly atmosphere that is very welcoming. I was hoping for a new favorite spot, but I do not think that Philippe qualifies. read more

This was the perfect way to start Easter Sunday. My brother and I decided to try this place for brunch since I've been meaning to go here for a while. Wife N and I are in town visiting from Portland OR for an extended weekend, just a little time together for a few days. Found Philippe French Bistro and decided to swing in at opening time on a Saturday morning. Got right in---apparently unlike Portland breakfast bistros, people don't proverbially line up here three hours early to get a seat. It was pretty empty, though I'm told things pick up over the next hour or two and they did. Started with a Latte and an Espresso. Coffee was lovely, smooth, no bite. We ordered a small plate of beignets to start. These were different than the more cajun style we're used to, more like a doughnut with a raspberry filling. They were delicious. Mains arrived. I ordered their Omelette Parisienne (french ham, gruyere, pearl onions and spinach), and she the Croque Madame (think high-falutin hoity-toity fried stuffed grilled ham and cheese with bechamel sauce all over it, and an egg on top because that's the Madame for you.). Omelette: LOVED it! I finally found a French bistro that can cook an actual FRENCH omelette instead of the half-moon shaped American variety! I just had to travel halfway across the US to eat it. The eggs were perfect, fluffy but absolutely perfectly golden yellow and not a hint of browning. The interior was just barely to the "cooked" mark and wonderfully flavorful. Fabulous! The Croque Madame was....massive. Oh yeah, the fat lady sung on my wife at about the halfway point, and (having already downed my omelette) I was mostly useless at assisting her in consuming any further. Huge. Two light/average eaters could easily share one. Service was great. Cost was about average for the area. I glanced at their dinner menu and we may return for dinner while we're here. read more

I had the absolute pleasure to dine at Philippe for dinner tonight. When writing a review, Yelp asks you to talk about the food, service, and ambiance. Well I'm happy to say that on these three categories Philippe hit a trifecta. Let's start with the ambiance. Located in the heart of Old Town in an historic building, as you approach Philippe the charm of what awaits you inside becomes apparent. Upon entering, the restaurant host greeted us with a smile and showed us to our table. being my first time for dinner I took a loom around and the restaurant simply exudes French charm. Our server came by promptly for our beverage order. When it came time to order, while my dinner companions knew what they wanted, I had narrowed it down to three menu items. I asked the server for his recommendation and that ended up being the Coq Au Vin. After tasting it, I am glad he did. My dinner companions had the Saumon A L'Harissa and the Moules Frites Vin Blanc. When the food arrived the presentation was fabulous. I eagerly took my first bite of the Coq Au Vin and the deep rich flavor of the red wine along with the tender chicken was amazing. My companion who ordered the Moules Frites said they were delicious but she seemed to enjoy dipping the frites in the white wine sauce even more. The Saumon was perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. The ambience, the service, and the food all came together to make our dinner at Philippe a perfect evening. We came in on a Wednesday evening and were seated immediately as the dining area was maybe only half full. Ambience was good, dining area was relatively quiet since it wasn't super busy. Service was prompt, we got our drinks almost as soon as we ordered them. We ordered the beef bourguignon and the coq a vin, dishes that were highly rated based on other reviews. The beef was incredibly dry, like it hadn't been cooked long enough or was cooked at too high of heat. I had to use a knife...bad sign for stew. Flavor lacked depth, which could be because it wasn't cooked low and slow enough. Portion wasn't huge, but it still was hard to finish. The fries were fine. The coq a vin was bland. Our plate has white and dark meat. The white meat was very dry, dark meat was better, but still lacked flavor. You could tell the chicken has been braised with wine, and was better than the beef, but marginally. The gratin potatoes were the best part of the coq a vin. We were really excited to try this place, but were pretty disappointed with the food. Maybe it was an off night. read more

This was truly a 10 out of 10 experience at Philippe French Bistro. From the moment we walked in, the service was warm and attentive, the space was quaint, spotless, and beautifully decorated, and the owners were present and personally stopped by each table -- which made the evening feel extra special. We ordered the Coq Au Vin, Steak Frites, and the mussels, and every dish was absolutely outstanding -- rich, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, dessert arrived. The crème brûlée was excellent (you could see the real vanilla bean specks -- always a great sign), and the Louis XIV was incredible, with the lace cookie being my husband's favorite part. The food is foremost your priority to come here. It was very good both times I went this year. The restaurant owners are a French chef and his wife, and their son. All three of them work there. Call it a mom and pop shop, it's quite endearing. I suggest a weekday meal, that's when you can recieve the most service. Ambiance is quaint. They put thought into it. It felt like a fine dining experience and yet they didn't interpret that on the nose with decor. It's down to earth like a cute French kitchen, yet it's romantic.
