Can't believe I haven't tried this place until now, but the hours are weird and I guess the location of it isn't ideal but hell, the burger is damn good. Easily the best tasting burger here in oxford and the atmosphere of the restaurant is fantastic. Had dinner here this evening with our children, 12 and 7. "Gentleman" behind the counter taking orders felt the need to pound his fist on the counter shouting (this is not exaggerating, he was shouting) to another customer that they had "the best F***ing Philly in the world" four times. We pointed out we had small kids. He said sorry... and then continued to do it. It is really a shame because we eat here every time we are in Oxford, but will not be back to this classless restaurant run by a classless individual. If you've got some time, and an urge for some great local southern food in Oxford this is the place. I especially like going there on Fridays for their fried catfish. This is a genuine for-local-by-locals place with a very friendly, casual atmosphere and great service, but as the city of Oxford expands (and the University grows) it's become busier. Consequently it usually takes a while to get your food - so be prepared to converse with whoever you came with and/ or watch the Ole Miss game on the TV until they're able to bring it to your table. read more

Amazing! Stopped in after surgery this morning. Normally you order at counter then find a seat. Rachel was our server and just had us sit since I was on crutches and took our order from the table to make it a easier on me. I thought that's was the sweetest thing to go above and beyond to help out. Definitely not something she had to do. Very attentive and pleasant. Drinks never went low, hamburgers were hot, fast and delicious. Sweet potato fries were on point and didn't even need to be dipped in any sauces. Everything was delicious but what really made the day was the service, especially in this time. Rachel made us feel so welcomed and cared for. I can't wait to go back on my next visit to Oxford. Got the Smokehouse burger, a little of everything on it, very good. The regular hamburger, good. The hand cut fries were hot and good. The sweet potato fries were hot and okay, a little greasy. Their food is definitely 5 stars however their service can be lacking. If they're busy they won't even answer the phone so you might as well show up. We just moved into town and keep trying new spots. This one is pretty close to where we're living and we liked the vibe of it. The atmosphere is cute, the front porch is nice for dining (if it's cooler out), and the inside has tons of quirky funny stuff on the walls. Overall, the location, decor, and friendly staff are a huge plus. The food is just OKAY. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but I also wouldn't object if someone really wanted to go. I may bring out of town guests here because it has a sort of charm you just don't see in other parts of the country. I had a burger, fries, and some fried mushrooms (as an appetizer). The burger was okay, the fries fresh cut (big plus), but they weren't seasoned. The fried mushrooms were a big NO. Fried mushrooms sound sort of interesting in theory, but they don't do well in practice. Mushrooms are slimy to begin with so when you fry them you get a greasy slime ball that just tastes like a barrel of corn oil down your gullet. Yuck. Any-who... if you are in the mood for a fun vibe and like hamburgers, this may be the spot for you. That being said, you could also go to 5 Guys for less money and have better food (but then you miss out on the atmosphere). read more

Three types of cheese and some ham served on top. Oh my how delicious. The fries are definitely a let down though. A high quality burger deserves a high quality side to complement the burger. They do serve nice sweet tea and the atmosphere is like that of an old school homey place. The dinner is quite different than the lunch here. Dinner is a bit nicer. Philips Grocery has a unique selection of burgers and they are delicious too. The Philly cheese steak burger has sautéed onions, bell peppers, chopped philly cheese steak meat and melted provolone cheese on top. It was the perfect burger if you can't decide between a classic philly cheese steak and a burger! The Phil-ups burger is a classic bacon cheese burger, but with a slice of ham and two different cheeses! The fries were good, but could have been a little more seasoned and crispy. As we pulled in, I saw a sign stating: "#1 Cheeseburger in the United States!" I would probably have given this joint a 3 but I feel they need to get real and remove the slogan! Was the burger pretty good? Yes, it was good and fresh but it was small and the toppings were mediocre- we ordered 5 1/4 pound cheeseburger dressed like they normally do with mayonnaise and mustard and all the vegetables. I love raw onion on my cheeseburger, but it had so little I could hardly see it. The thin, wilted piece of green leaf on my burger was brown around the edges and missed that crunch you would expect on a good cheeseburger! The biggest problem I see is that even though they 3-5 servers working, I was told I would need to come to the counter and order, make my own drinks and then take a seat wherever I like and they would bring enough food out! After I made five drinks and made two trips to the table- I thought, "I sure hope they aren't expecting a tip!" We ordered one order of seasoned fries and an order of onion rings to split! Both tasted good but the french fries were barely enough for one person, much less shareable like a normal order of fries would be at a non-chain restaurant! I could tell that they cut their own fries in-house- but the portion size seem dictated by the guy who had to cut the fries and was rationing them to a fault! Was the burger worth the $4-$5 dollars? Phillips is just one of the best places you can go in Oxford. Although it doesn't occupy a coveted spot on the Square, it is the perfect lunch spot for anyone. Football season is made complete with Phillips. Their patio is perfect for dining in the fall after a morning game. My boyfriend loves the Phil-Up burger, but I just love all of their sides. Their fried pickles and corn nuggets being some of my absolute favorites. It is a little gem in Oxford, and the perfect example of a Southern mom-and-pop restaurant. read more

Easy Place for lunch!... If you're at the Baptist Hospital it is a short walk but crossing the road will take a little work. No sidewalk from the Hospital so you get hit by a car you are close to medical care! Hamburgers were good nothing but not over the top. I always get a hamburger well done it brings out the flavor in the meet. Try it. The location is a mix of all kinds of furniture and cool stuff on the wall. The pie rack is next to the door if you want a pie. Sorry I don't do pie but it looked good. This is a place you need to come take a rest and eat good food... If you have an extra hour and a half or two and like food that's decent at best then go for it! Waited for 20 minutes before so much as a drink order was taken. This and the fact that they weren't even taking appetizer orders should have been our first clue. Took an hour and a half to finally get food. Not even a "sorry this took so long". During this time we had to result to refilling our own drinks multiple times (you would think a waitress would only allow this to happen once at most). Overall incredibly unimpressed and really wouldn't recommend going here when Oxford has so many options that taste better and come with MUCH better service. read more
