I've been going there for over 6 years now and their philly cheese steak with work is the bomb. Thier steak fries is very delicious as well. Too much onion and not enough meat,cheese or anything else. I was hoping the place would be better, but Jersey Mike's has them beat by a mile, and they're only so-so. When it comes to flavor of the meat, the amount of onion, the amount of cheese, I admit I was disappointed. I got the large, so I admit, I expected more from a place that is supposed to be built on this sandwich. My suggestion would be to ditch the lettuce,mayo and tomato and stuck to meat and cheese with onions and peppers on the side. read more

Absolutely love this establishment! Very cordial customer service. Limited parking, but the food makes up for it big time! Every time we come in, there's no one there, which is a plus or minus, depending on you. It's a plus for us as we don't need to wait in line and wait longer for our food to be cooked. Easily one of the best kept secrets in all of San Diego. The cheesteaks are massive and reasonably priced, and there's a nice selection of meats.They recently expanded and the shop has more than enough seating, both indoor and outdoor. They have Wise chips (which is sold on the East Coast only) and variations of the Philly cheesesteaks, including the original. It was not exactly like a Philly cheesesteak sub, but it came close. The flavor was old grill that wasn't cleaned, there was absolutely as little meat as possible, we do not use provolone cheese in our steaks and if that was a large size in CA, that would be a baby in Philly. We've been there many times over the years and it seems that the quantity has gone down while pricing goes up to keep up with rising product and employee costs. Parking is good and inside the atmosphere is nice and friendly. A little warm during the summer heat, so crank up the a/c for your customers. Really good place in El Cajon! Went here with a co-worker a few months ago and am glad I did! I found this place back in the 80's and loved it, then moved out of the area. I am back now and can tell you going here for a meal is one thing I look forward to. Each sub is made to order. Portions are plentiful. Taste is beyond good. A large sub can easily feed two normal eating people but do not be surprised if you get a large, you alone will find a way to eat it all. We heard about this place from a coworker and since my husband loves Pastrami we had to try it. This is the best in San Diego. We've eaten all sorts of sandwiches, including Jersey Mike, Grab and Go, Submarina, etc. This is tops and worth the drive (we drove 30 minutes). Jersey Mikes is #2 and Grab and Go #3. We have even eaten that new NY one from downtown San Diego. This is by far the best. There is plenty of meat on the sandwiches. We had the Pastrami and the Philly Cheesesteak. Both were made fresh. One note, parking is tough but we got there early (10 a.m.) so was not a problem. The owner was super cool and made our daughter french fries for no charge. We we definitely not forget that, although he might get grumpy if everyone ask for it. Really glad we found this place. Price is cheaper that Jersey Mike, a little more than Grab and Go, but totally worth it. Just incredible and we are big time food critics, just look at our other reviews. No B.S. here. read more

My Son highly recommended this place so I went right over today June 14 and waited over 45 minutes for my sandwich. The real cincher was 12 people who came in well behind me all got their food before me. I went up to check on the status of my order and was told my order was on the grill. That wasn't true. It was another 25 minutes. I went back up. It was obviously a lost ticket. I was asked what my order was and my name. He grabbed a sandwich that had been sitting there and said here it is. This place was reccommended by a friend and it was the best food reccomendation Ive ever gotten. I went in at 8 pm and the cook had atleast 15-20 to go orders waiting and the phone was still ringing.I knew right away it must be good. So came in for a lunch to check and see if the place lived up to the name here's the thing I'm from philly this ain't a authentic Philly cheesesteak but I knew that would be the case it's so hard to replicate out here however it was very good. I had heard good reviews on this place. Obviously from people who never had a good cheesesteak. My son and I went in on a weekday about 8pm. It took a 1/2 hour to get our steaks. My son ordered the works and I ordered the works with avocado on the side. I never got my avocado on the side and I think they forgot to put the steak in. I moved to SD and went to CVJH in 1980. Philly Cheese Steak was a great sandwich shop back then and has been for many years of my life. Although the tiny shop has really grown, just a teeny bit, and has remained one of my all time favorite home food places; I have recently very reluctantly crossed it off my list. Is it under new ownership now? I do not know. What I do know is the guy behind the counter is like none that have been before him. He has the personality of a doorknob and is kind of a borderline jerk. Not good for any business I would say. To top that, which I could have gotten over for my favorite comfort food, the everything sandwich, the sandwich went from love it to lump it all on the same day. WHAT HAPPENED TO MY SANDWICH? The flavor was completely GONE!!!!! The peppers onions and mushrooms where completely tasteless and bland, as was the meat. I could not believe it was the same place. This is not the same sandwich at all! The table was more than the usual sticky, it was old sticky. The place was empty after the guys next to us left but no one ever came to clean that table and so we sat next to their dirty table and left behind cups looking at the extremely dirty door glass and adjacent window, drinking our soda with about half the syrup in it. Did they turn it down to save money or did they not bother to check to see if there was enough? Do you know how yuck half syrup soda tastes alongside the sandwich that suddenly lost its taste? It's not good. Lastly, I earned three free items by spending my hard earned money there. I was a little excited by that when I brought my assistant to lunch (for her birthday lunch, which sucked thanks to the food). Yet, that was a bit stifled when the pleasant (NOT) guy who took our order deflated my elation by informing me that he would only honor one free item at a time, so I had to choose one. Hmmmm, go ahead and keep the other two. I won't be back. Thanks for last 40 years of great food anyways. It'll be missed. read more
