I lived in Chicago for almost 20 years, and the best and worst thing that ever happened to me was discovering Philly's Best when I lived up in Wrigleyville. It was one of the reasons my weight ballooned over years of eating this fine food when hungover, because this is by far the best cure for what ails you when that happens! They have so many appetizers, salads, desserts, pizza, and cheesesteaks on the menu that anyone can find something to enjoy. Sometimes you'll get a deal on one of their promotions, and sometimes you'll get as a loyal customer coupons to use after ten orders. The fact that they deliver is just added joy to my lazy butt. I was visiting in town and had to have this one more time prior to leaving. From years of getting deliveries, the person who always delivered to my condo remembered me- called ahead to make sure he was actually bringing this to a hotel instead of my old address. Super kind, and nice to be remembered. Awesome guy. I will tell you that I always get my cheese steak on garlic bread, with onions and extra white american cheese and extra meat...this way I can eat half and save half for later. Ask for the boss sauce (ketchup and mayo mix) on the side, it's good for dipping snacks into! It is super greasy, but good for what ails you when you're hungry or hung over. If you're into fries- they have so many options- curly, seasoned, with cheese, and they have Philly Fries which are thicker cut and seasoned liberally with Old Bay and comes with a side of a creamy/cheesy sauce. Make sure you get an extra side! The Philly Steak Roll is basically an egg roll with cheesesteak ingredients in it- genius idea! They are open late at this location so you can order until 2 AM! Also good for those drunken cravings...Basically it's good any time you are craving a taste from Philadelphia. read more

I've been a customer of phillys best dozens of times over the years. They are ver good at doing a classic, East coast style cheese steak. Tonight I drove 15 minutes to go to phillys Best to order. The website said they we're open to until ten. I checked it before I made the drive. I walked In at 9:50. Sadly I didn't call first to check the emotional temperature of the staff. Maybe they didn't feel like being open? My mistake. Went I went to order, the cashier told me they were closed. It didn't matter what the website said. It didn't matter what the sign on the door said. The kitchen wanted to close. Even thought the website and the sign on the door said differently. The cashier on duty tonight (1/5/2022 at 950pm). had no interest in trying to make a customer happy. Basically her attitude wAs a big FU. She just wanted me to go away. I'm fact while we were talking she literally walked away from me, pulled out her phone,and started texting. I would strongly recommend any Yelp reader not to even think about going to or ordering from Phillys Beet after 6 pm. Posted hours of operation clearly mean nothing to the staff or the owner. Customers who want to spend $ there are clearly an imposition. Read a few reviews about people saying the staff are/were rude. Personally never experienced that, but also could just be them trying to stay authentic to the Philadelphia experience. In the heart of Greektown is Philly's Best! I always have to stop here when I am in the area either for myself or for a friend of mine. The cheesesteak is good. Awesome cheesesteaks, pizza, and fries. If you're going for lunch and you're in a hurry, stick to the pizza since that's already made and it comes out immediately. Both the regular cheesesteak and the chicken cheesesteak are pretty great, but they're made to order, so if you don't have a ton of time, go w/the faster options. Also, don't be fooled into thinking the chicken cheesesteak has less flavor or is way healthier than the steak option - it's just as good if not better than the original. The plain cheese pizza and sausage are good options, but the gyro pizza is hands down the best. The philly cheesesteak pizza (at least when I had it) wasn't that fantastic...it just tasted like the regular cheese pizza with some extra noise inside. That said, though, the cheese pizza is pretty good, too. They have Pepsi there, but since they're connected to Gyro Mena, which has Coke, you can get your choice between the two, which is a bonus. read more

Took a little break from Yelp because I was noticing an overabundance of people rating restaurants extremely unfairly based on a single, its-bitsy, more-than-likely isolated incident. However, my experience with Philly's Best today forced my hand to jump back into the review game. COVID cases are surging, yet apparently Philly's Best doesn't care. No one had a mask on when I went in there (in spite of the sign on the door that said masks were required). Not the cashier. Not the cooks. Not even the schlub who waltzed in like he owned the place (maybe he did) who started to yell-talking (i.e. talking at an extremely loud volume so the entire restaurant could hear) with the various staff members while repeatedly dropping "f-bombs". They already lost their locations in Evanston and Logan Square, and combined with the fact that they're on a stretch of Jackson which is closed for construction, I don't see how this place is going to survive the latest round of indoor dining closures. In all honesty though, due to their completely disregard to their own employees' and customers' safety, maybe that's not really a bad thing. read more

Finally a place in the city for philly steak sandwiches. The menu has so much to offer from philly steak sandwiches, grinders and pizza. We chose 2 philly steaks. One on garlic bread with provolone cheese, grilled onions and giardiniera peppers. My sister said it was delicious. The seasoned fries were good but due to the way it was packed, by the time we got home it was soggy. I ordered the philly steak on regular roll with provolone cheese, grilled onions and grilled green peppers. I added a side of chipotle mayo. Dipping the fries in the mayo is addicting according to my sister. I ordered chicken tenders for my niece and they were breaded with a nice coat of bread crumbs. And she ate 3 out of 4. Now for the not so great points. The way they packaged it made things soggy and hard to pull out. The fries were in a small white paper bag and rolled tight so the tenders weren't too crunchy. The fries were packed the same way and was soggy. The sandwiches were wrapped nice and tight cut grease from the fries and tenders seeped through to the sandwiches. And everything was in a brown paper bag rolled and stapled closed. So all the heat made things warm. Overall the food was good. Next time to try the grinders. read more

Found Philly's best about 11pm after watching Joe Rogan's Stand-up Live. Wasn't sure what to expect not being from Chicago but it was open until 3 am. Come to find out it was some of the best food my friends and I have ever had. All together we got a large Philly Original, large chicken Philly Original, a small Philly Original with peppers and one big beautiful slice of hot wing pizza. I'm from Philly - born and raised - and have had more than my share of cheesesteaks, not to mention calzones, strombolis, hoagies, and pizzas. Having lived in other major North American cities as an adult - Boston, LA, DC, Toronto - I've grown accustomed to disappointment whenever a place calls itself authentically "Philly"...especially when it comes to cheesesteaks. Even the best cheesesteak I found in LA - which was made by a guy from Philly - didn't quite hit the mark. So, imagine how happy I was to try Philly's Best in Greektown and actually find what I would call an authentically Philly cheesesteak! I ordered a large steak wit and added mushrooms and extra cheese. The Amoroso's roll was like a blast from the past while the meat still tender and flavorful, despite being extra lean and cooked through. My only complaint was that the "extra cheese" was hard to find and the mushrooms, while delicious, were not cooked enough to render the moisture out of them...this lead to an incredibly soggy roll though, fortunately, only one half of the sandwich seemed to suffer. I also loved that the cook didn't overseason the sandwich - s/he let the onions (just the right amount) and steak do their thing. I also ordered a "stromboli" with mushrooms, ham, cheese and peppers. FYI - purists will tell you that what this place makes is a calzone, not a stromboli (the latter are rolled, and a calzone is like pizza folded in half and sealed, which is what this place makes). I requested extra mushrooms but didn't really seem to get many, but there were plenty of peppers in it. This thing was BIG (I ordered a 'medium') and packed, and cheese lovers will really enjoy it. I would have preferred there to be more sauce, ham, and mushrooms, with a little less cheese, but the crust was good - not too thick, not too thin, and sprinkled with a little bit of parmesan. If I order one of these again from here, I'll be specific next time on how I like them, but for a first try, this was good. Overall, this Philly boy was very happy to discover Philly's Best in Greektown. I ordered pick-up and was pleased to see they had things organized to make sure folks had space to distance comfortably, though they didn't seem to be enforcing the "masks required" signs posted all over (the other two people in the store picking up had their masks hanging off their chins...). Other than of course Pat's or Gino's. I walk into Philly's, after finding street parking. I order a small cheesesteak wiz, grilled onions, and ketchup, salt and pepper. They serve Amoroso buns too! I opt for the garlic version, cuz hey why not. Avoiding the Greek vampires that day. (I'm in Greektown). I go to use the bathroom. Updated and spotless. Love it. Huge kitchen in the back, and open, so I can catch a glimpse of the cook. Plenty of inside seating. My cheesesteak is ready in a timely fashion. I open it up, wow! I can't wait to dive in and so be it if my cholesterol goes thru the roof. I could die happy. The bun is soggy and falling apart, I can't figure out why??? I would like it soft on the inside and a bit of crust outside. No go. The flavor of the meat? Not so much. Granted the wiz and the grilled onions were on point, the meat lacked any juice. It was really dry. For supposedly being shaved ribeye meat, there is ZERO dripping meat factor. I have serious sad face. I think I would have liked the sandwich better had I come here drunk hungry. Truth be told, I came here only because they sold TastyKake. I saw a feature on Food Network some time ago and don't ask me why, but I was on a mission to try them. I'm glad I decided to grab a bite too because frankly I think I over-hyped TK, I found my chocolate "cupcakes" downright average. I've been to Philly's Best once before, the express outpost in Logan Square, and it was just ok; forgettable, if I'm being honest. It seemed like the menu at this location was much larger with more veggie friendly options than its sister location (but I could be wrong). I went with the "small" Veggie Works (aka 6") grinder and a small order of fries. The sandwich was good, but a I think adding some form of sauce or dressing would improve it. The grinder comes on an italian roll with mozzarella, cheddar, onion, tomato, green pepper, spinach, broccoli and mushrooms. It was really filling and there was no way I could've tackled the large version, as it was I couldn't finish the sandwich and fries. The entrance is a bit odd, once you walk in off the street and up a few steps you come to a solid metal door that looks like it might open up to a stairwell or even back out to the street. I'm guessing there was confusion since they put a handwritten sign on it so you don't stand there trying to figure out how to get in. Otherwise the inside is fine, nothing fancy, but they have a decent number of tables, should you choose to dine in. Be careful with your trash; they threaten to sic the basket police on you should you throw away your basket. Maybe if the hole for garbage was a bit bigger, baskets wouldn't get tossed so easily. Seriously, it's hard NOT to throw out the basket! This location seems to do a good business, there was a steady stream of people and deliveries going in and out late on a Saturday afternoon. It's a solid place to stop if you want a bite and want something other than Greek. read more

Philly's Best is a stretch of a name but it's not a bad place for food if you're up past your bedtime. There's lots of options including sandwiches, salads, pizza, and other gut rotting drunk food and for a pretty reasonable price tag. My advice? I'd skip the steak sandwich and go with a salad or hoagie or something. It wasn't very flavorful for a Philly and fell apart every time I tried to pick it up so it was basically like eating an unhealthy salad anyways.
