Perfect order!! My Italian beef was dipped with peppers (which is the only and best way to eat it). It was wet but not sloppy. The fries taste just like I remember from my childhood. I will definitely be back at this location.

Good Italian beef. Better than Portillo's. Got it dry and loved the sauce on the side. 7/10. Didn't know it came with nothing on it so next time I'll probably add some spicy giardiniera. Service was great I ordered it for pickup and they were kind.

Place was popping and people were looking for something to warm up their bellies for that cold day in Chicago. I got the Italian Sausage with beef, extra dipped and fries. This was my first time trying one of these in Chicago and I must say, I'm glad I picked it. Super juicy, fries were perfectly crispy and crunchy. The dog combo extra dipped was out of this world ( from an Cali perspective haha), id definitely try it again. I also added the sweet peppers, nice touch

Recently stopped by Al's Beef on a late Friday night and had a great first experience. It wasn't too busy, which made for an easy visit. Since it was our first time, we used the self-serve kiosk to browse photos of the menu and decided on a dipped Italian beef with provolone and giardiniera, plus a side of chili cheese fries. The food came out quick and fresh. The Italian beef was the star! Juicy from the dip, loaded with tender, flavorful beef, and perfectly balanced with that slightly zesty, tangy kick from the giardiniera. Pro tip: eat it standing and leaning forward like the mural on the wall suggests, unless you want those delicious juices all over yourself. The chili cheese fries were generously loaded, though I wish the fries themselves were a bit crispier. Still satisfying, just not quite as crunchy as I expected. Overall, a solid spot for an authentic Italian beef and one I'd gladly come back to.

Great Italian beef sandwich, service was great and food came out quickly. Sandwich was kind of bland in my opinion but I think next time I'll get it dipped in gravy. Will definitely be back!

A lot of times you go to these iconic spots and they don't live up to the hype. This is not one of those spots. Krystal took our order with a smile, as she would with any tourist or regular. Our regular beef with hot and sweet peppers, soaked, sandwiches were ready in a few minutes and we scarfed them down immediately. The beef was hot and flavorful and the bread was wonderfully soft and damp. The first taste almost hits a bit salty, but your tastebuds reset with a few more bites and you get the layers of flavor from the juice and heat from the peppers. And I don't know how, but all that sloppy, juicy goodness never bleeds through the wrapper, onto the table. Brilliant!

First time on having chicago italian beef. Al's Beef had made my experience amazing with their clean environment, excellent beef, and outstanding customer service. Highly recommend Al's for anyone, this is a place I would visit more

If you're frequent on food tv channels, you'll likely have seen a show that's showcased Al's Beef. While waiting around for a spot at the bar at Bavette's which was nearly impossible for a Friday night, I noticed Al's was a few blocks. Figured while in town, might was well try this iconic eatery. Al's known for Italian beef which I've never had. Closest thing I've had is a French Dip. Had a big Italian beef sandwich and instantly became a fan. The thinly sliced beef has a lot of flavor since it's marinated in its jus. It's not too salty and I added provolone and sweet peppers. Came here twice while in town and second time around, I got the gravy on the side. The first time, the bread was soaked and the bread fell apart towards the end. Good quick eats. Worth a try.

Walked in the rain to get here and it was worth it! I got a beef sandwich and cheese fries and both were delicious! I'm used to portillos in California, and this blew it away! I considered trying the original portillos while I I was here visiting but didn't get the opportunity. Please open in California!

This location is nice. The other one I went to near the university was sort of dumpy. Not sure if this is new, but it's small inside and there was a line when we went. We ordered and waited for someone to leave and got their table. Maybe like a 5 minute wait on a Saturday afternoon. I got the regular beef, added the hot giardiniera and dipped it. It was good but super messy. Lots of beef. I like me a good beefy sandwich. Not a sandwich you can take to go, need to eat it hot and sit down since it gets messy.

Came to Al's Beef based on the recommendation of my friends from Chicago. After all, I can't come to Chicago and not get an Italian beef and a Chicago-style hot dog! Since I was visiting from out-of-town, no question that I was gonna get both a beef and a hot dog. Ordered a regular Beef & Sausage Combo and a Chicago Style Dog. The beef and sausage was...truly fantastic! Got it dipped and it was as meaty as I had hoped for. Very very tasty! The Chicago Style Dog was exactly what I expected. The pickle, tomatoes and mustard complement the beef really well. Staff here are great. They move really fast, which mattered as the line got super long after we got here. Food came out within 10 minutes. Super quick! Al's Beef really knows what it's doing! Ended up getting a Polish sausage to-go a few days later, and that didn't disappoint either! Super super good.

We were tourists but HOLY CRAP best Italian beef I've had out of the five or so I've eaten in my life. I was delighted. The wait was short. And the dipped version is FAR superior, trust me.

Fortunately Portillo's offers both and it was recommended by locals and previous travelers to make this my one restaurant to try both. I arrived on foot on a Saturday before 10pm and there was a long line to order on the kiosks and a security guard by the door. The restaurant has two floors of seating with dated decor all around, assumingly part of the intended vibe of the establishment. The first floor seating was all taken but there were plenty of tables available on the second floor. I was able to try Portillo's hot dog and Italian beef sandwich. The hot dog included mustard, relish, celery salt, freshly chopped onions, sliced tomatoes, pickle, and peppers on a poppy seed bun. The paper wrapper was strategically wrapped around the Chicago dog inside out, knowing that the logo would be clearly visible when people take pictures of the unwrapped hot dog. I ordered a regular hot dog but probably should've ordered a jumbo hot dog for a dollar more since then regular was tiny; for comparison it was definitely smaller than a Costco hot dog. Although the toppings complemented the hot dog well, the bun was soggy from being wrapped in the paper for only a few minutes. The standard big Italian beef sandwich (slightly wet) was much larger for more than double the price of the hot dog, with no Portillo's branding on that wrapper. I was a little too excited to order this that I forgot to add sweet and hot peppers, but the sandwich still tasted very good. After ordering I realized I probably should've ordered the gravy on the side so I can dip the sandwich more, but again it was still very good. For dessert I tried the lemon cake slice and strawberry shortcake. The lemon cake was a little dry and really sweet and the strawberry shortcake had a little too much mascarpone cheese whipped topping for my liking, but of course I didn't have to finish it all. Portillo's is a good option for casual fast food and for travelers to try. I definitely prefer the Italian beef sandwich over the Chicago dog, but that is my personal preference. For a sweet treat, the strawberry shortcake is a nice option if no other dessert places are nearby. To save time during peak hours, it may be a good idea to order ahead on the mobile app.

I tried to search 'best hot dogs in downtown Chicago' and the search brought up a lot of places…read morewhich would have been an expensive ride, several miles out of the city ... placed which had closed down ... or unrelated restaurants. Despite its 'tourist trap' reputation ... I figured, if they sell a lot of them, they must be good, right? Spoiler alert ... they sucked. Let's talk about the whole ordering system ... Chaotic, confusing, terrible instructions. This is all compounded by them hiring a cranky senior citizen who stands next to the kiosks and rudely scolds you when you aren't following the impossible to understand procedure. The restaurant is a pasta restaurant connected to a hot dog restaurant and looks a lot like the food court of a rest area off the highway, combined with a casino, including creepy mannequins on catwalks and lots of red and purple spotlights and neon. I opted for a regular Chicago dog (jumbo) ... and some sort of special spiced/smoked Chicago dog. It took nearly 20 minutes from order time to the time my bag arrived at the counter. The bottom level doesn't have nearly enough seating for everyone ... and of course no signs direct you to the upper levels, where tons of empty tables are. Filthy, empty tables. Just looking at the dirty tables was enough to give someone food poisoning. Both hot dogs were cold. It was clear they were probably sitting out being thrown into bags, assembly line style, because they didn't taste fresh (or hot). The bun wasn't toasted or buttered ... Just a cold white poppy seed bun for the 'special' dog and a plain white cold bun for the other. Beyond being lukewarm, the hot dogs were pretty bland and tasteless. I could barely taste the relish or mustard. All I could taste was the dill pickle spear resting on top or the odd little spicy peppers with their stem caps. I recommend ordering some dipping sauce, or cheese. I was very disappointed ... which was slightly offset by only wasting $5.50 per hot dog, which was about $5.00 too much but at least not approaching 'bad airport food pricing'. After trying these, I am all set with having another Chicago hot dog. Maybe it would have lived up to the reputation at a fresher place. This is clearly a mass-produced, assembly line kind of tourist trap. There were hundreds of people there at 2 p.m. For reference, my top hot dog spots ... Pink's in Los Angeles ... Ben's Chili Bowl in DC ... Olneyville System in Providence ... Coney Island in Worcester (probably more for nostalgia) ... so it's not like this is my first fancy hot dog experience. One last thing ... the milkshake was no different than McDonalds.

I really want to like them so much more than I do. If there were a continuum from hipster deli…read more(think Mile End) to traditional deli (Manny's, 2nd Avenue, etc) Schneider would on the hipster side of center. Two of us shared a half pound pastrami on rye with a side of hash browns. The rye was pretty decent but the pastrami was sliced far too thick and the meat was lean. That is not a good thing when it comes to pastrami and I attribute the lean meat to the deli catering to its hipster-ish audience. Although the flavor was decent, the sandwich was dry and difficult to eat. We disagreed on the generously sized pickle. One of us thought the flavor was just right, the other not so much. We both agreed on the hash browns. It's a no-go. They were well fried but entirely unseasoned. I understand the lack of schmaltz but there was no onion or salt or anything else. Waffle House has nothing to worry about. (IYKYK) Service was fast and polite. The space is tiny, but it works. Prices are okay for this area but if you want traditional deli in Chicago, go to Manny's.
