Recently got to try JP Graziano after searching google "whats the best sandwich in Chicago." lolol I came across a reddit forum and JP Graziano was at the top of everyones recommendations. My friends and I just want to enjoy our Chicago summer and decided to go to the beach so naturally my mind went to sandwiches and immediately thought "this is my opportunity to go to JP Graziano" Ordered the Italian and the Mr. G and it was seriously the perfect beach sandwich. Me and my sister split each one to try and genuinely the Mr G is something ive never had before in a sandwich and it was amazing. The Italian is also delicious and is giving your classic Italian sub sandwich. But the Mr. G is what Im ordering again! I heard the bread is supplied by Damatos Bakery so thats definitely a plus! The atmosphere inside is so cool. It is very Italian/chicago vibes. Long line but it goes by very quickly. The staff there is working hard and fast and the owner himself is very nice. We repeatedly get takeout from J.P. Graziano and always have had the best experience start to finish. We have ordered online and walk up and both are easy breezy. The sandwiches are so fresh, and each item is wrapped perfectly so by the time you get home they aren't soggy. We highly recommend the Mr. G and the Muffuletta. DeAna was awesome and told us the history of each item we ordered. Everyone that works at J.P. Graziano is fantastic. Had to come try this out after seeing it reviewed multiple times. The store itself is really cool. Very straight forward menu and the wait was shorter than expected with the line that was inside. I really wanted to love this sandwich, but really I thought it was just okay. Seems to be mostly bread with a little of everything else. It sufficed for a pool day. read more

I've been trying to come here for a while, but it's always packed. This time we showed up right when they opened, and yeah... worth it. Still busy, but manageable. I walked in and the incredible smell hit me, all the meats and bread on display, everything looks fresh. The crew behind the counter was top notch, super friendly and on it. Menu has a lot, but for my first time I went with the Italian. Hot capicola, Genoa salami, hard salami, mortadella, provolone, lettuce, tomato, red wine vinegar, oregano. First bite... everything just came together. The meats were layered perfectly, salty, a little spicy from the capicola, super flavorful. The provolone added that creamy, slightly sharp bite. Bread had a nice chew on the outside but soft inside, held everything without falling apart. The vinegar and oregano gave it that tang and freshness that cuts through all the richness. Nothing felt too heavy, just balanced. It's one of those sandwiches you don't wanna put down halfway through. I'll definitely be back to try more. read more

LOVED my roast beef sandwich here. And loved even more that the staff was friendly. You order at the counter, and then you go pay for your order at a little booth at the end of the restaurant. Our sandwiches came out quickly, and they allowed a lot of customizations on them. The bread was really fresh from The Publican, and the meat quality was really good. They also checked in on us as we were eating to make sure everything was good. I love the local versions of chips. They have, that was an awesome addition. The sandwich is enough to last you for two meals, it's huge! We were happy to share one. It's kind of a crowded deli, but they have outside seeing to help. read more

I'm honestly very confused as to why this place is as popular as it is. I've been here twice and both times I was VERY hungry so I should've found anything delicious. Both times I was so disappointed with the sandwich. It's barely toasted, so dry, and lacks any flavor. I got the Mr. G which is their house specialty. (Heavy sigh) Leave your handcuffs at home, I will walk to the stocks myself. J.P. Graziano's was praised up and down by a colleague as one of the best sub shops he's ever tried. I wanted to love it, for family owned and operated businesses are often some of the best, and I love money going somewhere local as opposed to the $4,000,000,000 Jersey Mike's. However, if you'd put two subs in front of me, as much as it pains me to say, I'd choose the Jersey Mike's. I'd ordered a Mr. G., and a Tomato Basil Soup. The soup hit just the right spot for a miserable, raw, rainy day that, while heralding the arrival of spring, doesn't become easily bearable. The soup had the perfect texture, rich tomato notes, and herbaceousness from the basil. Simple and uncomplicated, but just right. Also packaged perfectly to not spill on the way back to the office. The Mr. G. was... fine. The veggies and cheeses within were good. Now, while I am not typically a fan or artichoke, here they worked well, only they attempted a great escape from being eaten! There are two things, in my opinion, that I like more about JM's: balance and moisture. JM's, through using more of everything and their signature "juice" makes the sandwich less bread-heavy, and less dry. The service is fantastic. As someone else wrote, I would have expected it to be at least a little rough around the edges. Instead it was friendly, kind, and very efficient. Final verdict: Please don't get me wrong, for a locally owned and operated Sub Shop, J.P. Graziano is good. However, when I'd tasted something that has a not-so-secret secret sauce, I can't lie and pretend I don't like said place better. read more

I've worked in the area for awhile and have always wanted to go to Graziano's. I finally came in and I'm not sure why I was always intimidated by the longer lines. The line goes fast and the wait for your sandwhich isn't really long at all. While waiting for my order, I appreciated the no frills decor and character of the store. For my first time, I had the Mr. G. It was delicious and it was hitting all angles. Salty, tangy and carby! The sandwhich was plenty to share with someone, but I saved the other half for lunch the next day. I can't wait to get back to try other items on the menu. read more

Their sandwiches are TO DIE FOR, that is all, just go here. Get you a Hot Italian, from the Friendly Italians making the sandwiches. This place is old school, and just perfect. I've also tried the Muffaletta, and that one is savory and tasty as well. The Italian has my heart though - and these are BIG sandwiches, you could split one and be fine. But get one to eat and one to take home, great idea!!! They're good the next day too - I know this. The day we were in, there was a guy debuting his new brand of garlic hummus, and it was SO GOOD. I visited J.P. Graziano's pick up window and was so excited to try the sandwiches given the number of absolutely raving reviews. I ordered the turkey sandwich, and my husband went for the Italian. While both were fine, service was good and we appreciated being able to eat on their patio on a nice summer day, honestly, the sandwiches didn't quite live up to the hype for us. The flavors felt standard, and the sandwiches didn't have that wow factor we were waiting for. That said, the giardiniera was amazing, and I'd say my favorite in Chicago. I would go back just to buy that (they sell it!) Overall, it is a solid spot, but if you're expecting an unforgettable sandwich experience, I'd say keep an open mind and maybe come for the giardiniera first. read more

This's our first time coming to this place. We've been wanted to try it for a long time. You order from th front, and pay at the cashier in the back. They do have seatings available inside and small selection of Italian groceries. They do have a good amount of selection on their menu. We got the muffuletta and the Mr G sandwiches. They ran out of the bread for the muffuletta sandwich, so I just got it with the French bread. The sandwiches are good, but probably not something I would go out of my way to get it. It's almost like being around my Italian cousins out on the East Coast... We were fortunate enough to be having dinner at an Italian restaurant in the same block, and I saw that they were open until midnight. I decided to grab a grinder and a couple of cannoli after dinner to consume the next day for lunch. They utilize a walk-up window for their later hours. I believe I mentioned during ordering that we "do not get grinders like this in Cali" and they were kind enough to let us indoors (surely knowing this weather was nearly "Antarctic penguin cold" for us) while our order was being finished. I saw various jars of giardiniera and muffuletta and could not resist buying a couple. Our store associate kindly wrapped them well in plastic wrap to ensure safe travel back to Cali. Our sandwich maker was a cool guy as well and conversational with us. They even gave us some brief family history on the place. Unfortunately, without my knowledge the wife set us up with an Uber while waiting so we had to dash and run to make our next stop before their closing time. "Foodies are as foodies do"... The FOOD review: CANNOLI w/cherries: -- it appears they use Amarena Bologna cherries which are so much better tasting than the standard maraschino bright red ones. I prefer morello cherries or these when using them in cannoli pie or on Chicago style or ricotta cheesecake. -- cheese tastes of cow's milk ricotta and is well strained so not watery -- lightly sweet is appreciated as it should be...no fake Italian sugar bomb with chocolate sauce and whipped cream like they do in Cali sometimes -- smaller portion size but value is good -- smoother textured than grainy -- shell is light colored and pretty solid -- up to a moderate dusting of powdered sugar on exterior -- appears freshly filled as there is no soggy shell syndrome whatsoever, crunchy and firm (I ate one two days later and it still had a firm shell) -- I have about 8 different cannoli pie recipes I created and make for friends, family and colleagues now and then. I transitioned to pie ages ago because there are so many bad shells and a graham cracker crust is always legit and easy to find. -- IMHO this is a much better and truer cannoli rendition than what you will find at D'Amato's Bakery in Chicago RATING = A "MR. G SPECIALTY GRINDER": -- I briefly considered "The Italian" or asking for a combo of the two but this stood out so I stuck with it -- I requested it "wet" as I hate anything dry (bread, meat etc.) and prefer extra "juice" (red wine vinegar, EVO) -- bread is not thick nor thin but just right with great texture, taste and freshness -- loved all the flavors and additions -- not a moose overloaded grinder but just right for those out of their twenties who do not need "sandie leftovers for days" -- good value here too RATING = A+ They even sell some appealing looking BLOOD ORANGE (and other flavors) sorbet. I definitely recommend them for a super hospitable Italiano experience with great eats. They even made the "Top Sandwich joints" in America list by Food & Wine magazine per associate and a quick Internet search. read more

My favorite sandwich shop in Chicago, period! When you walk in you get the old school Chicago deli vibe, featuring a fantastic staff who makes you feel right at home every time. Not only will they fill your day with positive energy, they'll answer any questions you have with no hesitation and move quickly. People who complain about long wait times clearly have no patience, even during rush hour they're cranking out sandwiches efficiently. I've never waited more than 5-10 minutes. In terms of what to order, I always recommend the Mr. G as my first choice. It's packed with the best Italian meats and the truffle mustard adds the perfect finishing touch. They also make a great classic Italian sandwich but if you want something more unique I would go for the Muffuletta or Porchetta. And be sure to stop by during the summer for their night window where they're slinging Italian Beefs. They also sell their own spices and Giardiniera, so be sure to grab some on your way out. I have heard so much about this place I had to try it, even though these multi ingredient type sandwiched aren't really my thing. I was immediately struck by how friendly and helpful the staff/owners were. This type of service is hard to find these days! I ended up getting a plain roast beef sandwich, which was really good. I'm sure the rest of their sandwiches would be equally as good if you like that sort of thing. She gave me two top choices - this was one of them and I painstakingly went back and forth trying to decide which place to choose, before ultimately going with JP Graziano. I'm happy with my choice. I've been wanting to try JP Graziano for a while now, and I finally stopped by for lunch before a haircut. Coming from Jersey, I often miss the abundance of Italian delis, but walking into JP instantly made me feel at home! I ordered two sandwiches--one to eat there and one for the next day--and they were both ready in like under five minutes. I ate inside since there's plenty of seating, and I started with the Mr. G, which I've heard is their most popular sandwich. It did not disappoint! The combination of provolone, spicy soppressata, salami, and roasted artichokes was incredible, but the truffle mustard vinaigrette really took it to another level. For the next day, I grabbed the classic Italian, and I'm glad I did--it kept really well and was just as delicious. The staff was super friendly and checked in to see how everything was. I have been on a man hunt for a decent Italian sub since I've moved to Chicago. This was my last hope. While the service, efficiency, and ambiance were excellent, the actual sub itself was just meh. I tried the Mr. G. with added giardiniera. It was a tad bit salty to me... maybe it was addition of the salty Hot Giardiniera with the meats, artichokes, and mustard that exacerbated the salt factor and left it a little one noted (salt/acid). I'm not going say it's not tasty. It's just not Great! I'm just used to the meats being layered and the inside of the bread being soaked in an oil vinegar seasoning concoction. I shall return in November with my Chicago born offspring to get their on-take regarding this matter.. It could just be me; since I was born and raised in the northern east coast and we do our hoagies/subs a little different. read more

Excellent service from friendly staff, and I lucked out in getting one of the few indoor seats. (They offer plenty of outdoor seating.) I got the prosciutto and mozzarella sub, and both of those ingredients were top notch. My only issue was with the mild giardiniera, which was way too salty, as if the lid to the salt shaker popped off during preparation. I can't say if this was an aberration because I've been to J.P.
