    Santa Monica Animal Shelter

This is one of the most friendly shelter staff I've ever come across to be honest. Animal Care…read morewears a person out so it's understandable but the staff was more than willing to show me around and tell me about the shelter. It's an extension of the PD so their campus isn't huge, and they have one building of dogs and a room (plus a quarantine room) for cats. They're half police and half animal control essentially so they have to respond to field calls as well as keep up the facility. For all that work they still have welcoming attitudes. That's one of the biggest complaints I hear working at the shelter is no one cares and staff is unsympathetic. Not so here. Not when I came on a Saturday eve anyway. As I said it's a small spot for a small city. Santa Monica has better government than LA, not in small part due to the land area they cover, quantity wise and demographic wise. My biggest gripe about LA is it's too big which is why gov is so inefficient. It needs to be broken up into more smaller cities. Right now we just have SaMo, culver city, and WeHo with proper municipal status basically. This whole city is like 10 more cities to me. But I digress. Good shelter, as good as one can be given how low a priority it is at city hall.

But despite this and the recent negative reviews, I went anyway. There needs to be more oversight with this particular facility. The people there clearly do not know what they're doing, are very unprofessional, unorganized, and rude. I adopted a kitten who was still quite sick, despite being reassured several times that she had recovered. They adopted me out a cat was too small to get spayed, and did not have her first round of shots. I have had to make several appointments with them, missing work in the progress, all because of their lack of organization, communication, and professionalism. It's tough writing a review like this because I understand that it might affect other people visiting this humane shelter and adopting out beautiful animals that deserve a home, so I hope this reaches someone in charge and they rethink who is running this facility.

And again, Linzi helped us with Ellie! She matched our family perfectly! We can not thank Linzi and the foundation enough. They do amazing work and care deeply for the welfare of their dogs. We rescued our wonderful mini doodle 'teddy' almost nine moths ago, and we could not be happier. We were well informed on Teddy's life up until we rescued him, and felt we were in great hands. This rescue foundation is thorough, diligent and very mindful about finding every dog a forever home. As a family with a baby and toddlers in mind, we felt reassured that we were rescuing from a reputable place with not only our family in mind- but the utmost care and love for the dog being rescued. Gina, who fostered Teddy (aka Max) for the first few months of his life, was so friendly, helpful and completely upfront from day one. Teddy was absolutely adorable, and yet she let us know all his flaws right off the bat. Gina was amazing and even took the time to personally come to our house to ensure all was safe and secure for our potential rescue pup. Nine months later and Teddy has become a valued and adored member of our family! We are so grateful!! We highly recommend the forgotten Dog foundation- they are passionate and fantastic at what they do!

I will begin with the positive: This is one of the cleanest shelters I have visited. As my review…read morehistory suggests, I rarely leave negative reviews, and only do so when the conduct is indefensible. Our experience matched the dozens of other negative reviews perfectly. We are a family of color. I pay close attention to tone, body language, and how staff choose to speak to us. The difference was obvious the moment we arrived. We came to look at cats. Before we were allowed to even view the cages, an older woman with a Russian accent immediately began firing off intrusive qualifying questions. The final one was, "Well are you even ready to adopt now?" I chuckled and replied that it all depended on how the visit went. She followed up by counting our children out loud. "Well I see you got one, two, three kids." I explained politely that not all of them were ours (I am the headmaster of a school serving autistic children). She responded by clapping me on the back twice without permission and saying, "I see you already got enough." This is often used to 'shame' people of color. At age 50, I only have two children of my own and the income to support them; I think perhaps I should get parenting advice from a more qualified source. Do not touch people without consent. Do not talk down to them. Do not try to establish superiority through sarcasm or volume. I walked away while this gross weirdo continued prattling on. We stayed close to an hour. No one asked if we wanted to meet any animals. No one offered information. No one showed interest in helping us adopt. When my wife asked a male staff member about the likely size of a litter of very young puppies, his response was irritation and "I have no idea." Size matters when adopting a dog. Acting annoyed by a basic question reflects poorly on the staff and on the organization. This shelter looks good on the surface, however the staff needs to understand that their behavior makes them look like buffoons and makes the organization that employs them look tacky. The treatment we received did not match the mission they advertised. Clean facility. Unacceptable conduct. We'll stick to our regular shelter.

Then they stayed with us for all the big and little questions. Our pup came to us with everything he needed for a soft landing, especially great advice! On top of that, you can feel good about this group. The work they do for shelter and homeless animals in the community goes above and beyond. By adopting our little guy, we got a love match, but also cleared a space for Wags and Walks to rescue someone else. Win win!

My husband and I genuinely love fostering dogs and helping animals in need, which is why this…read moreexperience was so disappointing. We've foster failed a couple dogs, helped place another through our online community, and poured a lot of time, care, and emotional energy into helping these animals. Despite that, we were repeatedly met with rude, dismissive, and condescending communication from staff, coordinators, and even veterinary partners both via email and when we would take the foster in for appointments. What was most frustrating was seeing the urgency around training and behavioral support suddenly disappear once they learned we were moving forward with adoption. The concern for the dog's behavioral needs no longer seemed to matter in the same way. Given the adoption fee of $500, we also expected a much higher level of communication, support, and behavioral follow-through than what was ultimately provided. Rescue work should be rooted in compassion for both the animals and the people volunteering to help them. Unfortunately, the way we were treated made it clear we will not be fostering with this organization again, and I would encourage others to think carefully before fostering, supporting, or adopting through them.

My second experience was terrible. After my puppy was killed while with me on leash by a reckless driver, I later returned to L&L to look for a new baby. Different set of employees, and both my nephew and I were shocked that one of them seemed to blame me for my puppy being killed. He was rude, insensitive to the circumstance, and he did all he could to throw up roadblocks to helping me. He was an expressionless jerk who had zero empathy or professionalism. I contacted the manager about this, and though she three times promised to call me back, she never did. This is heartless behavior for a place that is supposed to be doing good. I will never go back to that place again. The only reason this is not a 1-star review is because my first experience with them was good. That appears to have been an anomaly.
