Unfortunately I cannot recommend this business. My first experience with Love and Leashes was very good. I adopted a pup with the help of two very nice and helpful employees. My second experience was terrible. After my puppy was killed while with me on leash by a reckless driver, I later returned to L&L to look for a new baby. Different set of employees, and both my nephew and I were shocked that one of them seemed to blame me for my puppy being killed. He was rude, insensitive to the circumstance, and he did all he could to throw up roadblocks to helping me. He was an expressionless jerk who had zero empathy or professionalism. I contacted the manager about this, and though she three times promised to call me back, she never did. This is heartless behavior for a place that is supposed to be doing good. I will never go back to that place again. The only reason this is not a 1-star review is because my first experience with them was good. That appears to have been an anomaly. I adopted a pup from Best Friends West LA, which I cannot recommend enough. read more

We adopted our dog, Toto, from them back in August. They bring dogs from West LA shelter every morning, except Tuesday. The dogs stay at the healthy spot all day. The place is clean and inviting and the animals are in great care. Toto was a great fit for us, we fostered him for a few weeks until we decided to adopt him. Came to this place over the weekend. Finally into the "Get a dog mode" so had seen this place existed at the Westside Pavillions mall but when I showed up it was closed down. Luckily we kept searching and found out this is their new location. Showed up and were introduced to the doggies they have available for adoption right now. They didn't have much but its understandable being they had just moved in a month ago. However the store itself was a real nice size and they had so many animal supplies that looks like a great one-stop shop for items. I was told about their adoption plan and everything seems good. I would recommend this place for sure to everyone in the market to adopt. Looks like for now you need to keep up with their FB page to check on new arriving animals for adoption. My mother's little emotional support dog passed away just before Thanksgiving. COVID has made the isolation she's feeling very difficult so our search for a new companion began rather quickly. I saw a sweet little dog on Petharbor and contacted the West LA Animal Shelter and they referred me to LA Love and Leashes. I must say that the entire process of communicating with LA Love and Leashes was seamless. The website is very clear and they take the time to provide all the details of how they've adapted for COVID, as well as little bios for each animal. Check out their Instagram account. I was able to show my mother extra photos and even a video of the dog we wanted to meet. They got back to me very quickly after we submitted the application. We arranged a time to meet the dog and I brought my mother in. They require that you bring masks AND gloves so don't forget them! My mother fell in love with the dog and after finishing up some paperwork our search for a new companion for my mother ended. The entire experience was so positive. They really care about placing their animals with the right people. Their adoption fees are the same as the city which is 3 or sometimes 4 times less expensive than other shelters in the city who charge upwards of $400 for their fees. We decided to also give a donation on top of the regular fee because we saved so much money and had such an amazing experience. 5/5 would recommend to anyone searching for a new furry friend. read more

If you are reading this review, scan through the photos and check out my new sidekick Hen Wen. He is adorable and amazing and I never would have found him if not for LA Love and Leashes. The adoption process in general is overwhelming. Shelters are kind of sad places. Some organizations have waiting lists for dogs and really high adoption fees to cover their overhead (understandable, but still inconvenient). This business model, however, is perfect. It's all the comfort of a pet store, but all the reward of a shelter. The workers are knowledgeable, helpful and discerning. You don't even get to play with the dogs unless you plan on adopting that day. One of the best parts is that if you follow them on Facebook, they show which pets are available. That's how I found my Hen Wen. I had been thinking of adopting for a while, they posted his photo and I was like, "If he is there in 2 hours when I get off work, he's coming home with me." His adoption fee was $84, which included his vaccines, microchip, registration, a free vet checkup, and obedience classes. I had to buy a leash and collar too. So about 3 hours after seeing his photo, he is mine all mine and it's beautiful and amazing. So think twice before you hit a pet store. Help a dog in need and check out LA Love and Leashes. The kitten that they gave me to adopt was sick and before adoption I asked them about his eye but they said he is fine 100%. After a week I took him to doctor and he said my kitten has a harpes virus. I hate to do this but this business needs a bad review just so they can get their act together. A few days before Christmas, I went to this store with a group of children who were well behaved and just slightly excited to see cute dogs who need to be adopted. Needless to say the supposed manager literally yelled them out of the store. So rude and unacceptable. How exciting !!!! I had to buy shampoo just because of the greatness of this "store" . They bring the cats/ dogs from the shelters. What a concept !!!! They had so many breeds and special mixes to pick from. A data base at the door for searching others. Prices???? Thes best in the country ! Best adoption experience ever. These animals come from the West LA Shelter so they're all rescues. They usually have a rotating cast of characters but you can count on the same animals for a little while unless they get sick and the WLA Shelter holds them for the day. Karla was so sweet and the volunteers were great. It's a little store so you aren't overwhelmed and the volunteers are able to spend time with you and help you out. They're very knowledgeable and genuinely love all the animals. Of course they always have their favorites but they're very knowledgeable about their habits and preferences etc. I truly believe they're honest with you and wouldn't let you take a pet that will be a bad fit and leave you both miserable. The Animal Control woman who works with them and the West LA shelter is fantastic. The process was relatively easy and painless. I went during the tail end of the dog Olympics so it was still a little busy. 12 dogs were adopted that day and I took the only cat for a grand total of 13. The volunteers were really happy to see a cat get a home and seemed to genuinely like the cat I chose. I highly recommend them. read more

This 'shop' is a unique concept to pet adoption. They're a store front for the LA County Shelter and they bring in 3-4 dogs and 2-3 cats who are available for adoption and interaction while you're there. I really like their use of social media; posting pictures of the animals on facebook. It's a great way to spread the word. It's also how we found our addition to the family. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They can be a bit wary of people wanting to see a dog; they just want to make sure that you're interested in adopting and not just playing and getting an animal's hopes up. I think the concept is great having a store in an upscale mall to help out the shelter. I'll be back as we're looking for another addition to the family! read more

Love & Leashes (first floor) is a very unique place because they are showing and adopting out dogs a cats that are currently being held in LA Animal Shelters and desperately need forever homes to go to. The Westside Pavilion Mall is such an awesome location for a store like this because of the exposure and education people can receive by just walking by and stopping in. Puppy mills like Barkworks are Baaad, Love $ Leashes Gooood! Each dog bought from Bark Works (located on the 2nd floor) means a shelter dog axed. I have two beautiful cats from Love and Leashes. At 25 at the time of the first adoption, I expected to be scrutinized for being young, but the staff here are incredible. They still remember us and ask after our cats when we go in to visit. I feel like I got really lucky with my cats as they may not have stood out in a shelter, but were irresistible in a smaller environment. We adopted our dog from them a few months ago. They bring dogs from the west LA shelter to the Healthy Spot every morning. And they stay there all day. All the volunteers were so nice and the adoption process was so easy! We went to the Healthy spot to just check out the dogs and we were surprised to not only have found one but we could bring him home that day! They were all so sweet to both us and all of the dogs. You could truly tell they cared. All of the paperwork was easy to do and they take a picture of you with your new pup. It was a lot more affordable than other places around too! The only problem is KARLA FOX a very rude,unpolite woman that treats people so bad and has no respect to anyone...she makes people give up of adopting a dog,made a disable lady leave the store with her sweet maltese service dog,can you believe???she does not allow us to interact with the dogs,never smile or make you fell welcome at the store. Love & Leashes puts a whole new spin on Mall pet stores. You know how most pet stores are - you see the doggie in the window and even though you know that it came from a puppy mill, you're smitten with poor little Fido. Love & Leashes has capitalized on the high pedestrian volume at malls, but instead of luring you in with a dog that was shipped at 3 weeks from Missouri, L&L has shelter dogs on display. That's because these dogs come from the various LA City shelters, and are up for adoption! The storefront is small, but very clean. To the right is a makeshift dog-run - there are 3 compartments with a few shelter dogs running around and being supervised by a volunteer. There is a cat area in the back left portion of the store. There are signs of the dogs that are playing around, but there's also a computer on the left side of the store to link you to the LA Animal Service website so that you can browse even more dogs available. If you choose to take one home, you only have to pay the standard shelter fee which is less than $150 (and includes all shots + spay/neuter). I personally think it's great that they're bringing attention to the large shelter population and saving more dogs this way - there were so many families in the shop and the kids were as excited about a 4-year-old small breed dog as they would be over a puppy. If you already own a dog, there is an area where your dog can be introduced to a potential adoptee to check for compatibility. Plus, having a bunch of dogs hanging out together is great as you can see which dogs are more social than others. Additionally, this business model helps expand the dog rescue network beyond people who already know about shelter dogs, as it provides a bright, clean, cheery place to potentially pick out a dog, as opposed to the sterile and "depressing" environment that deters some people from adopting from a shelter. When I was there, I did notice that most of the dogs were small breeds, and predominantly chihuahuas, but I'm not sure if that just has to do with the day I visited. There are also some basic items for sale - crates, leashes & collars, food bowls, and toys - with all proceeds going back to animal shelters or groups that help rescue shelter dogs. The volunteers who were working on the day I visited were all very friendly and seemed to know a bit about each dog. There's so much positive energy brimming from this store. So now you can shop & adopt - and feel good about what you brought home from the mall! read more

This place denied me adoption of a CITY SHELTER animal which they were exhibiting during the day in their store. They made up their own adoption policy for animals that don't belong to them and would not allow me to adopt a full grown animal that nobody but me was interested in adopting. The person I talked to asked me all sorts of odd questions about my house, children and "how is your neighborhood?"!!!! She came to the conclusion that I lived in some boonies where coyotes were roaming around. I told her that it was not the case but this individual who has never been to my house and does not know anything about me at all tells me that yes that is how your neighborhood is. She knows my neighborhood better than I do even though I have lived there for 17 years. How about that!? I was really appalled by their bigoted judgemental and snotty attitude. I called the West LA shelter and told them about the treatment I received from this organization. They actually were really surprised that I was asked all that crap and that I was denied adoption of their animal. They let me adopt this animal with no questions asked. They said that the city shelter does not have this adoption policy under which this woman from Love & Leashes denied me adoption, and they don't ask people who want to adopt city shelter animals all those discriminatory and basically illegal questions. read more

I absolutely cannot say enough about how wonderful LA Love & Leashes is. LALAL brings dogs and cats currently living in LA city shelters back and forth daily to the Westside Century City Mall and they stay there for the day so they can get more exposure and experience the benefits of a serene environment, and find their forever homes. I recently adopted my 8 year old Doxie mix, Teddy, from them and I found the employees to be so compassionate, helpful and informative. Teddy was also so much more socialized than a dog with so many years of neglect like him would typically be. Because of their wonderful program and very compassionate & experienced employees, you could tell he was soothed, loved and able to decompress because he was in this serene everyday, so he was able to really shine when I met him. Plus, the staff knew so much about his temperament and behavior and this made a huge difference for me to decide whether I could offer him the best home. LALAL was so clean and it made the adoption process a happy experience. The city shelters can be so overwhelming and this was a much more upbeat process, and it made it so much easier for me to adopt a shelter pet. I could not say enough good things about them. This is such an innovative program and I hope they are able to expand to every city. A program like this could solve our pet overpopulation crisis. I love my Teddy so much and am so grateful to LALAL because they gave him the chance to find his forever home and truly saved his life. read more

Five stars for L.A. Love & Leashes and the personnel who work/volunteer there. Zero stars to those who claim to have had a bad experience there. I have been inside the store on several occasions, and not once have I heard or observed THE OWNER, or anyone else, speak rudely or act dismissively to a customer. What is most apparent is the care and concern for the dogs and cats that are brought to the store from the shelter, and how the staff tries to educate [potential] adopters concerning the commitment and responsibilities necessary to bring a pet into a family. Addressing Pete Q.'s review, first. What is missing is the other side of the story. Also missing was Pete's commitment and responsibility to seek vet care for the dog he adopted and claimed had "some kind of illness" after he had the dog for a few days. It could have been something minor, like adjusting to new food, anxiety to going into a new environment, or kennel cough, which many dogs contract either in the shelter or shortly after leaving. But the adoption agreement offers the option to return an unwanted pet in "exchange" for another. Mind you, Pete could have also opted to look out for the dog's well being. It would appear that Pete and others who see fit to "exchange," abandon, neglect, etc. a helpless animal are on their own "power trip," because the animals have no say in the matter. And if there are children in the home, what kind of lesson are they being taught? Pete brags about having been in customer service and not refusing service to anyone unless they were "unruly" or "life threatening." He talks as if exchanging a dog is no different than exchanging any type of 'store purchase.' One might wonder what Pete will do if the next dog he adopts shows signs of "some kind of illness" a month or two after taking the dog to his home. One thing anyone can bet on is that the dog Pete adopts now will be back in the shelter if it gets injured and, for sure, when it becomes a senior. After all, the shelters cannot refuse anyone who wants to dump their pet. That is what is really TERRIBLE! Addressing Romina F., who requested no comments. Sorry. It is doubtful that anyone in the store "gave" you a sick kitten to adopt. The shelter would not allow a sick animal to be put out in the general kennels, let alone go to a public store. Employees are not vets, so if the vet at the shelter feels an animal is well, then that info is what employees rely on. If you had concerns about the kitten's eye before finalizing the adoption, perhaps you should have adopted a different cat. Better yet, not adopting a pet until you are responsible enough and committed to caring for it. What everyone who wants to adopt a pet needs to know is that store employees and volunteers are often aware of the "existence" the helpless animals endured prior to ending up in a shelter. Their goal is finding the best possible home for them so they don't end up back in the shelter or abandoned in some park. It truly is a pity that shelters will adopt a pet to anyone who can afford the fee, because too many are irresponsible, will not be committed to the pet for its lifetime, and the innocent animal will be returned in worse condition than when it left the shelter. Too many people do not take into consideration the costs of having a pet after the meager adoption fee is paid -- vet care, grooming, shots, yearly license fee, nutritional food, etc. In other words, if you cannot afford a vet, don't get a pet. We had a great experience adopting our dog from these folks. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and down-to-earth, and we were very much at ease during the process. Some other reviewers apparently thought that the staff was too invasive with their questions and vetting potential adopters, we did not have that experience at all. I think they just want to make sure that the animals are matched well, which I think is pretty smart since the whole point is to get them into a "forever" home and avoid a return to the shelter. The store keeps about 5 dogs (and I think as many cats?) on hand, and when one is adopted, another one comes in to take his/her place. They have a nice FB page that features the animals, and lets you know when they have been adopted and by whom. Highly positive experience, definitely recommend. read more

How could I not have written a review for this place?!?! In December of 2013, we were doing some last minute shopping when I wanted to check out the dogs at this "pet store". Only until we walked in that we realized it was just a store front for the West LA shelter!!! What a great idea!! This nonprofit brings sheltered dogs who needs home to the public and makes them easily accessible to be adopted! This is when we s our - of - the - moment picked up our little girl (then Cupcake), now Lilo. She is the best thing that ever happened to us. About almost two years later, we adopted another one. Even though this is a "continuation" of the WestLA shelter which I'm verrrrrry unhappy with... the lovely ladies at Love and Leashes made up for their stupidness. After been rudely discarded from the shelter we found this little gem. My boyfriend and I, looking to adopt a cat, spent almost 45 minutes in their little cat room! We got to know each cat on a personal basis. They were amazing! And the volunteers were the sweetest. It was such a difference than being at the shelter. My boyfriend and I love this place. We got our cat from their old location over a year ago and have been following and donating ever since! We love what they stand for and all of the dogs and cats they have are so special. We visit every once in a while to say hello, make a donation and grab some treats and supplies.
