She was given written and verbal confirmation of when the final date to pick up Cooper was. Went with my family to adopt a rabbit and was pet shamed for about 45 mins about why we were not good enough to adopt a rabbit. They were so passive aggressive about the whole thing. They are not there to help you adopt a pet. they only want you to donate so they can virtue signal about how great they are for rescuing rabbits. I'm heartbroken and angry. I rescued a tiny neonatal kitten who had been abandoned by her mother. She was fragile and barely hanging on. With round-the-clock care from me, she started to improve quickly. She was eating well, gaining strength, and a vet confirmed she was showing positive signs of healing. I already have two cats, and keeping up with bottle feeding around the clock on my own wasn't sustainable. I turned to this shelter for help, trusting they had the resources to support her care. This was my first time ever surrendering an animal to a shelter, and looking back, I feel so naive. I truly thought I was doing the right thing. I trusted them and now I wish I hadn't. That kitten would absolutely still be alive if I hadn't. Before surrendering her, I asked directly if they euthanize kittens. The two employees at the front desk looked at me like I was crazy for even asking and reassured me she would be fostered and then adopted. I left feeling so relieved and thankful. Instead, within just two days, they euthanized her!!!! I found out when I called to check in. The person on the phone could hear the shock in my voice--I'll never forget that moment. I replay it in my mind constantly. I was completely blindsided. That kitten was getting stronger every single day. She had a strong will to live, she fought hard, and she was winning. She deserved a chance at life. Her death wasn't just premature, it feels entirely unjustified. Since then, I've read other reviews from people with similar stories. This seems to be a recurring issue with this shelter, and I want others to BE AWARE!!!!! Stood in the receiving room for 20 minutes without being acknowledged. Wandered the kennels for an hour, went to ask about a dog, and no one was around. Two dogs ram loose in the walkway between kennels foe the entire time i waa there. A volunteer finally realized the breech, and every staff member in the place ran out to capture the dogs. Please don't bring small animals here! They will find all reasons to put them down so they don't have to do any work to treat them feed them and to take care of them! They put down the baby opossum, who was all healthy and active. I found a baby opossum inside a mother pouch who was hit by a car and died and I thought these people would take care of him. I was so wrong, I regret so much!! They didn't even give him water or put him in incubator, stayed in my box all night, but was still alive when they put him to sleep. Would not take an emergency My dog almost ripped off his nail off his paw . And they wouldn't see us . Been going there for so many years NEVER AGAIN and when you are seen they charge an arm and a leg .We took him to fabulous PET VET in Manhattan Beach. A little bit of a drive but well worth it. It takes a lot for me to write a bad review of any place, but after my experience today I just had to. Let me preface this by saying the VOLUNTEERS ARE AMAZING! Hillary, Rika, and everyone else, you are phenomenal and deserve the world. Aside from the volunteers, the staff in the front office are abusive, rude, and just truly awful. The "supervisor" in the front office (I don't know her name but I will find out) snatched a dog out of my arms today that DIDN'T belong to the shelter (a nice family found this dog and I offered to take it to a rescue that I know has space after West LA turned them down). As soon as the lady at the front saw them hand the dog over to me she came and quite literally snatched it from me. It was disgusting and I will be pressing charges. One of the worst experiences I've ever had - LA Animal Services you should be ashamed. I was there to pick up the foster dog I WAS APPROVED FOR and told to come get and left empty handed as that woman just refused to release the dog to me even though I was told to come pick it up. I left this afternoon bawling my eyes out. I have never experienced staff and unprofessional and abusive and the front office group at the West LA Animal Shelter. You people are disgusting and should reevaluate your decision to work at an ANIMAL RESCUE if you can't be kind to the people there to help. All volunteers I spoke to this morning and 5 other foster/adoption parents had similar experiences to mine when dealing with the front staff...not one person had a nice thing to say about them. Los Angeles Animal Service Shelter is on Pico Bl in West Los Angeles. This facility is organized and has a great staff of helpful people. I love animals and would like to help every animal in this facility find a forever home. Over two years ago, I lost my first furbabe and I was inconsolable and was depressed. Through urging of family, I searched every shelter's website in Los Angeles daily for months and missed out on already adopted pooches. And just when I almost surrendered my search efforts, the website for this animal shelter had just posted a new furbabe on a Sunday evening. It was love at first sight, a little baby angel, only a few months old. Monday morning, I made sure I was the first person at the shelter and started the adoption process. The puppy had been spayed, vaccinated and cleaned up. Before meeting the little baby angel, I asked the staff for a moment of bounding time. But when the doors opened, the baby angel ran towards me and jumped up to give me puppy licks...as if she already knew me! So no bounding time was needed, we found each other. The perfect little baby angel for me, who immediately responded to her name, Fendi ! Initially, I had a french name in mind, but in honor of my best friend, an Italian clothing designer, I named my furbabe Fendi. This WLA animal shelter was organized with a nice friendly helpful staff helped with the adoption process. Across the parking lot is the shelter clinic with a veterinarian and staff who administered vaccinations and necessary surgical procedures, at reasonable costs and is conveniently close. If you're interested in a furbabe companion, please consider adopting from this shelter or other shelters. I am lucky and blessed to have found my baby adorable angel here. There are many loving animals in this wonderful shelter waiting to be adopted and adore you. read more

WORST EXPERIENCE. No one should come here to adopt an animal since they're not in the business of adopting animals. The staff is completely unorganized. They told me to come pick up a cat today and when I arrived I was first in line. They then informed me that they were giving the cat to someone else who had arrived after me! This place is completely unethical. They need to be evaluated for staff training and also the ability to run an ethical business. They do not want to adopt out animals. Everyone should go elsewhere. Pinning people against each other to outbid for animals that need homes and could have been adopted by a family earlier is absolutely disgusting. read more

I received an administrative citation from this organization demanding a $300 fine payment. The citation stated that I was the dog owner and that the dog was not seen but only heard. Apparently, a dog was heard at a house I used to own in Venice and they wanted to verify that it was licensed and had appropriate vaccinations. Using outdated title records, they identified me as the pet owner and sent sent the notice to my attorney's office. It was very difficult to resolve this problem. Staffers, I spoke to were un-yielding and insisted that my only option was to pay the fine. I eventually had to pay the fine and request and administrative review. Given that I have not lived there for 3 years and that my dog is already licensed in Santa Monica, the review resulted in an immediate dismissal. Seems like a shakedown in an affluent neighborhood. Still waiting to get my $300 back. read more

The other reviews of this place are correct. It's really only one woman who's ruining the place. She is completely insensitive to the animals and how her demeanor affects them. She's impatient, she rushed me through each cage and it was obvious her vibe made every cat recoil to the back of the cage. She doesn't mistreat the animals per say, but she has zero interaction and even less compassion. Given her place of employment it's a sad and off putting experience. On line it says they had 47 cats, when I got there they had 5. Don't go here to adopt. I knowingly adopted an 8 week old kitten with ear mites to save him. They hadn't' treated him. When I got him home I thought he was ferrile. He acting insane. Now day 4 he is much calmer with some loving attention, good food and a warm bed. read more

We need change at 11361 W Pico Blvd shelter in Los Angeles. They gave my husband and I the run around on getting our beloved puppy out and home. He is a puppy who just got his kennel shots about 2 weeks ago and had his neuter apt set for next week. They told us we could get him out unless they neuter him, even though we had our vet talk to their vet services, to ensure them we had a care plan and apt ready. We just wanted him back. It was $125 for the shelter to neuter him and release him back to us, his parents, and we agreed. We left and they told us to be back tomorrow at 2 pm to pick him up. We showed back up today and they told us there was nothing in Blu's notes about the neuter plan and release, and nobody from the day before was there. We spent two hours at the shelter planning the entire neuter and pickup procedure, even though we really did not want to be without our boy for one more night. I even spoke to the supervisor again to confirm after my husband went to go see our boy in his cage. The next day when we went to the shelter, as informed at 2 pm, they told us they had not neutered him and it was not in the system notes. That is not our fault. That is their fault and their negliance. They told us yesterday we could also pay $300 to get him out same day if we got a breeders certificate. We agreed he'd stay over night and do the neuter as it was cheaper and we just were married on the 3rd and a lot of our funds went towards our wedding. We showed up today, as told to do so, and they told us he has not been neutered and he'd need to be picked up again the next day, meaning another whole night without him, even though it was their incompetence on not completing our neuter plan, which we spent two hours discussing with them the day prior. This was all because they said they failed to add it to his notes. Too bad they aren't even open on Monday's. (Yea, get a loud of that) The staff had no idea what they were doing or talking about, and we were past from pillar to post with each staff member giving us a different story. We ended up paying $450 to get him out today as we did not want him there at that awful facility one more night. He was outside, laying in his own pee, it was raining, freezing, he had no blanket, jacket, not even a cubby hole for shelter. Which my husband pointed out and their response was "oh we thought he had one", but still not action was taken, no blankets, no shelter, nothing as we returned the next day. I am attaching photos of him in his kennel, and side by side of him home and in the shelter. We showed the photo of our abused puppy to the customers waiting in the reception area, waiting to adopt, and about 4 of the waiting customers walked out in disgust with us. We are working on filing a report with the county. I'm hoping as a community we can work together and make sure our shelters are geared towards saving dogs lives, and giving them good homes, not for money scams, and not for money making schemes, and not animal cruelty. For anyone who has lost their beloved doggy friend, or for anyone who loves their doggy friend as much as we do, you can understand how traumatic this experience was, and sadly this sorry excuse for a shelter made our traumatic experience even more traumatic. We are so happy to have him home and I would love to help out with anyone else who is in need of finding their baby. I am now very fond of these groups and I pledge to be an active member and helpful servant, as I am so happy to have my baby back home. Xo all. I hate to say this but the staff here needs to be retrained in customer service. The city of L.A. needs to be more strict with their employees. It seems as if the staff here does as they please not as what its outlined in their job description. Most of the ppl working with animals do not have a passion for it and are just there for the check. If u do not like your job look for another. Theres plenty of animal lovers who would like to help these animals be adopted. I have encountered bad service through the phone and in person with the staff here before covid and during covid has been the worse. I recently found a dog who was extremely neglected. If I had not picked him up he would of died of dehydration. I helped the dog as much as I could and took it here because it was in their area. I was questioned with attitude and doubt about me finding the dog. I had to provide my driver license which I had nothing to hide so I did. Then I was told I had many addresses and animals under my name but they could not tell me any other information but that. I asked how can I correct those mistakes and instead I was dismissed and told its ok happens to many ppl. I do not want any problems with the city so I wanted to fix that but was denied. The stray dog was taken in but the staff member helping me if u can call that help was just so rude. The one star is earned due to the fact the dog was scanned for microchip in front of me and taken inside. Other than that this place should remain closed until the staff can be replaced or retrained. I bought the dog a bed and went the next day to drop it off. I was told they were not accepting any items due to covid. I wanted to keep track of the dog so I would check online and he was there. Then he was no longer listed. I called about 10times to try to get an update on him but the staff continued to transfer me and hung up while I was on hold. I finally was able to speak with someone and the dog was rescued yay. Hope the news is true. I can just imagine how hard it must be for ppl who want to adopt or foster to get through the phone line and actually get help properly. Everyone pays taxes and thanks to the ppl and the community theres actually jobs for the city. The staff should be grateful for their job and give great customer service and get these animals homes. Instead the staff makes u not want to come at all. The staff is also very negative about the animals under their supervision. The city needs to do something positive for the ppl and the animals. If you want an animal from here or if you want to foster dont let the rude staff stop you because at the end of the day you will be saving a life and it will turn out to be the best thing. Listen to your heart . I wanted to work at an animal shelter for the city for years and I volunteered a decade in many of them. The only way to get hired is by a connection other than that theres no chance. Very sad. My review is due to the experience and not the job opportunity. The people who work here and the volunteers are what make the shelter so great! I've been here a few times and notice how dedicated the volunteers are to the work that they do. They are truly doing it for the homeless dogs and cats who are looking for a forever home. I used to volunteer at a rescue shelter and know that working with animals requires patient, love and people skills. The employees and volunteers here are doing everything they can to get each dog socialized with other dogs or people. Socialization is the key when it comes to finding a forever home to a rescue pet. All the dogs here are clean, well fed, get medical treatment, and go outside at least once a day. The shelter is clean and organized. If you are interested in adopting or fostering a pet, they will give you as much information they can about the pet, and work with you, step by step, to find the right fit for you. I should mention that I was a walk-in and wasn't sure what to expect, so I'm grateful for the volunteer who assisted me that day, she helped me find the perfect addition to my family. She took her time talking to me about my preferences, walked me through the available kitties that she thought were a good fit based on my situation, and with her guidance I chose the most amazing cat. My kitty and I bonded quickly, she is thriving and I'm happy I could make a positive impact in her life by becoming her mama. After I completed adoption paperwork they did a routine checkup and then let me know she would be ready the next day after her spay. The main procedure and her vaccinations were fully covered, with some optional services at cost. They also gave me a voucher for a free follow-up vet visit which is a bonus. I've been looking for another dog. I was supposed to be called by the supervisor at West LA regarding the dog I was interested in because she was being transferred there in a few days. I did not receive a call so I called the shelter the day after the transfer. The woman I spoke to was rather rude but what shocked me the most was their adoption policy. I currently have a dog and wanted the two to meet to make sure they are compatible. I was told that not only is this not possible, even the humans aren't allowed to meet with the dog beforehand. "It's a blind adoption," she stated. So they want me to commit to adopting a dog based off one photograph online? I know they want to empty out the shelter as much as possible but they don't even attempt to make sure the dog will be a good fit for their supposed forever home. It would be horribly cruel to the poor animal to send her back to the shelter or even rehome her for a reason that could've easily been noticed with a simple meeting. Even if I did not have a dog already it's simply not worth the risk. I'm sure the dog will find a wonderful home because she is still a puppy, but I truly feel for the older dogs that people will not even consider because of their absurd "blind adoption" policy. read more

I was able to walk in today and take my new cat child home with me. They were very nice to me and helpful with all my questions. They even gave me a small cat carrier and I will be back to give them two big ones I have at home that are being unused. Apparently there is NO communication between them . I feel I let a dog down , but never was told the real situation about adopting an intact Doberman ! It's the only place to find your next best friend...cat or dog! However you do need some mental strength and will power to select the right companion for you. There are so many neglected and abandoned animals that need a home, and looking into their eyes is heartbreaking. You'll want to take them all home. Well the lucky recipient of our home and love was Lily (Soon to be renamed Chili)! A 2 year old Chihuahua that just so happens to get along with our 1st dog and so far is not a huge barker. We love her, and feel so good to have given an animal a loving home. That said, let me just add that I found the LAAS facility to be VERY CLEAN and staffed with friendly people at the customer service desk. For the most part we had wonderful experience and smooth transaction. Big ups to Travis and Debbie for helping us out. The only reason Im giving LAAS 4 out of 5 stars is because of the 1st person we ran into. We asked her for info on seeing some adoptees, she was a real a$$hole. She directed us to the green metal doors outside with a real crappy attitude (as if we should have known where to go already). I can only imagine that working in a place where a majority of the animals will be destroyed can get to you emotionally, but dont take it out on people like me (with my kids) who want to add on to our family and save a life. First off, the internet didn't say they had to have available space to drop off an animal and they are rude, at least the office staff are. Twill me why it was like "Orange is the New Black". Gloria in the office was hella rude and acting like I was trying to get over and the C.O.s were just as bad. I took the dog back where my brother said he got it from, I needed to surrender him because he has full blown cancer, I can't afford to help him. Then Gloria said she was going to take him and Euthanize him. Talk about Harsh. Then I was blacklisted for refusing to take him elsewhere. She acted like I am running around picking up random dogs and dropping them at shelters. After that experience, I don't think I would ever adopt a pet, they aren't nice and treat you like a villain. That dog was allowed to be adopted with Cancer. They didn't even disclose it. Shame on them. And someone should let them know, it doesn't matter if it came from County or City, there is no jurisdiction when people are trying to do the right thing and not abandon the animals but take them to a safe location. read more

MINUS 5: Disclaimer, this review is based on my first hand experience based on one phone call and later one visit. On both occasions of dealing with the city of Los Angeles animal shelter the protocol for nuisance barking is to write a letter, let your neighbors know who you are so they can harass you, and then and only then will an investigation go forward. They can't afford to send someone out to see if the dog is indeed barking which would be the proper thing to do in my opinion because that would be an unbiased third-party professional opinion. We pay plenty of taxes to the city, especially for all of our bags when we go to the store, parking tickets, etc. etc. etc. etc., yet, when I'm working from home I cannot sleep I cannot work because this little dog is being abused. I am in no way shape or form a person that doesn't like animals because I do. The dog that I'm speaking about was thrown on the balcony on several occasions during the day each and every day And then he barks even louder and you can hear it everywhere and I can't think straight. These people leave him alone at night and he barks and barks and barks in a dark apartment don't most people leave a television or some lights on or maybe some soothing classical music?
