I visited Phil's subs last Saturday evening to enjoy a sandwich. I ordered a pastrami with Swiss. It took 15 minutes for my order to be prepared.. and the sandwich came out tasting lackluster at best. Luckily I only ordered a 6" sandwich for 7.95 the sandwich didn't come with any sides or a drink. While I was at the counter waiting for my sandwich I looked across at the grill, underneath I could see that it was disgusting and filthy. Don't waste your time going here if you want a good pastrami sandwich, you will only be disappointed. The ingredients are super fresh, the prices are fair, the payment option is a joke (Cash only? You can get a free card reader from any number of companies). Since my first review, the service has gotten better and better, but the food has gotten worse and worse. Fresh ingredients will get you far with a sandwich, but they're not enough in their own when faced with sandwich composition whose only goal seems to be fitting as much mass on the bread as it will support. The sandwiches always come out soggy, and even the lighter offerings are a gut bomb. I can't recommend coming here unless your only criteria is sandwich, and as much sandwich as possible. read more

Phil's 1500 Subs is a quaint sub shop in Forest Grove Oregon that not many people know about. Well not many people on my side of the river. It's a bit out of the way. BUT!....if you're heading out to the coast on 26 West, get off at exit 57 and head in to the Grove. Pick up a "warhead" and chow down. You wont regret it. Go a few miles out of your way and eat something that's yummy. The shop itself is pretty small. Has a few arcade machines and a TV that's usually on some sports channel. Pictures of little leagues that they sponsor are all over the walls as are a few news articles. It's a wonderful place to frequent if you're in the area or if you're simply looking to explore a new spot. This is hands down the best sub shop in the area! I've been in a few times, and they've got the best customization there is. One of the guys that works there, Rob, makes the absolute best hot subs! Regarding the Cash only/ATM fee, truthfully it's really not too bad of a thing. I understand that a mom and pop type shop would want to avoid external companies taking fee's out of income. Today was our first time grabbing a sub here. Let me just say we were blown away. The subs were prepared quickly, to our specifications and the taste was amazing. I love TOGO's and my sandwich was just as good. My boyfriend is from NY and is a diva when it comes to amazing food. His sandwich eclipsed anything he's had since leaving NY 6 years ago. My Mom and I stopped by last Wednesday afternoon around 1PM. We were greeted right away & given the time, it was perfect to stop in at this time. Clean, spread out & I loved that there is a small area for children to play at the front (to left when you walk in) - family friendly! We ordered the #600 (large for $10.50) with numerous meats, cheeses & loaded with veggies. I highly recommend it if you like your sanwiches loaded. Mom and I split it, we were so satisfied. This place I have missed heavily for quite many, many months. I used to get my fill from Phil's at least once a week when I still worked in F.G. at Ace. The Warhead is not to be passed up. AMAZING it is!! Phil's bread is fantastic -- not too heavy, not to light...Perfect and I especially like the finely shredded lettuce. I'm sure this is still the case, but when I was a regular there years ago, Phil's family employed a lot of college students from Pacific University. This is great. I earned a degree at Oregon State University, but can appreciate the ability to make some cash while flooded with study. I work in McMinnville now and almost every day at lunch I wish Phil's was around the corner as it used to be for me when I was in Forest Grove. Phil's is a great sandwich shop. The owners, Phil and Maryl, are daily involved behind the counter, and are clearly interested in a quality product. They have daily specials such as Double Punch day (for your Phil's card), or Thirsty Thursdays (when you get a free drink with your sub). There is also a Business Person's Special that includes a mini sub, a drink, and a bowl of soup or chili. Ah yes, Phil's Three Alarm Chili. Good stuff, Maynard. Try some. And I am a sucker for their soups. Especially the ones they make with "cheesy" or "creamy" in the name. The cheesy creamy bacon potato soup is the ultimate. Be sure to order some extra grilled garlic bread for dipping. There is only one minor complaint I have, and that is they do not accept debit/credit cards. But I simply pop over to the Safeway next door and buy a pack of gum or something and get cash back. read more

I had been wanting to try it for a while so I agreed that Phil's would be a good choice. The atmosphere was pleasant, nothing too fancy. The decor is nothing to get excited about but they do have some old arcade games near the door. It was clean and they had several boards listing monthly and weekly specials. The guys behind the counter know sandwiches! They were extremely nice and helpful guiding us through the menu and assisting us with our selection. They were patient too, as I was having a hard time pinning down exactly what I wanted. The wait time was appropriate and the price was right. The large sandwich that my guy got was less than $10 and it was a lot of sandwich. They only take cash so make sure you come prepared. They brought our sandwiches out to our table and we promptly dug in. There were a lot to these sandwiches. You definitely get your moneys worth at Phil's. I only got a small sandwich and it was more than enough. Their lettuce isn't my favorite but next time I think I will see if I can substitute sprouts. My fiance got a Cajun meatloaf sub and it was very well executed. They use a chipotle mayo and grill onions and peppers and it comes together very nicely. They offer a punch card here as many monthly and weekly specials. (My favorite special was the Friday special: "Wildcard" - if you were wearing shorts you got $1 off your sub!) I'm a sandwich guy, and very particular about what I like; Phil's is the best sandwich shop I've ever been to. Okay, granted, it's in my hometown, so there's some bias there. But still -- any sub I have, anywhere in the country, I hold up against Phil's -- and always find the others lacking in comparison. In high-school, my friends and I would always cary a single paper check in our wallets -- our "Phil's Check" -- so we could always stop in for a sandwich without needing to swing by the grocery next door to get cash. These guys make some great sandwiches. Its normally the quality of food that draws me to a restaurant and this one keeps bringing me back. They have been doing it for a while so its no surprise that their food is great. Don't be fooled by the modest building and seating what the atmosphere lacks is made up for ten fold by the food. This place sort of brings me back to when food was still new and exciting to me. I typically eat meat with my meals but the Serento is my favorite sandwich here and its completely vegetarian. Haven't been here for a year. Still the same great sub shop it always has been. Used to get lunch here three times a week when I lived and worked in FG. They don't take plastic but they do offer great service and quality. I almost always get the French Dip sandwich. Lots of roast beef and melted cheese and the au jus hot and tasty. Ohh Emm Gee! They finally have an ATM! :) I get the same sandwich every time I go in, the bread is delicious, they pile on the meat, and despite it being weird, they also slather on the cream cheese, just they way I like it! If I want a single meal I get a super small, if I want two, I go with the small. These subs are packed and quite large! Soup and salads are always fantastic! The grilled meat always makes me want to try a different sandwich... Because it smells soooo yummy! Love the fam & friend photo collages on the wall.. Phil, Maryl, and the kids are great and super friendly! Nothing bad to say about the place! Oh, and they have a lil play kitchen and lots of lil toys for kids to play with! I took my daughter here for lunch and we had a really good experience... The subs were grubbin and they're not those cookie cutter subs you get at Subway or one of those guys... It's like the classic sub sandwich that you would get in the 90's. Great bread, great toppings, made by a single person behind the counter and not on an assembly line of people throwing toppings on.
