Really looking forward to the day that Salami Mammi opens and beats every "Italian" sandwich shop in this town into a bloody pulp. Monkey's has apparently been around a while and does enough of the basic things right that a friend thought it would be a good idea if I went over and gave it a shot. Since my family moved out here from back east, and I followed a few years later, I've been horrified by what passes as a sub in Oregon and infuriated by the places that put out Italian flag colors, say they have "Italian" subs, then hand you something on leftover pizza crust with unshredded lettuce, mayo, mustard, and turkey that you aren't supposed to question or curse at them about (you know who you are). Monkey's faceplants into this trap by saying they do things "old school." As I've learned out here, if something dates back to the '90s and was here when the mall was an airport and the current staff's homes were farmland, it's "old school." In Monkey's case, "old school" dates ALL THE WAY back to 2000 and, for some reason, involves adding mayo and mustard to subs when oil and vinegar already exists on them. Hey buddy, let me clue you in since nobody's been kind enough to tell you for 26 years: The oil and vinegar are already doing the job that you think the mayo's doing. If Jessup McOveralls comes in and tells you your really decent sub rolls are "too dry" without mayo, it means you aren't adding enough oil and vinegar to the equation. Those condiments should not only serve as dressing for the (shredded) lettuce and (sliced) onions and tomatoes, but should soften up the bread a bit and enhance the flavor of the entire sandwich--especially when blessed with a bit of oregano. Monkeys not only blows through that fairly basic recipe, but commits sacrilege aginst its ham, cotto, and provolone by burdening them with mortadella (Italy's answer to bologna) and CHEDDAR cheese. What, did this "Italian" sub make a side trip to Dublin or Wisconsin? Who the hell puts cheddar on an Italian sub and deems that an appropriate use of everyone's time? And because it's Lesser Beaverton (Aloha), there just has to be a version of this "Italian" sandwich that throws turkey and roast beef into the equation. At least we found some use for that mayo/mustard combo. The "old school" subs dispense with the cheese and slather the mayo and mustard on some combination of ham, salami, and pepperoni. Beyond that, the menu is replete with bacon, turkey, tuna, roast beef, french dip and a bunch of other nods to some of the worst sandwich chains this nation has shoved toward Middle America. I give the place two extra stars for the bread and the staff who was pleasant enough (even if they blew through my "no mayo or mustard" request), but Monkey's can leave the "East Coast touch" out of its motto. These are West Coast subs that went though a Midwest wringer, and whoever is comparing them to Jersey Mike's needs to realize that Covid likely knocked out whatever sense of taste or texture they once had. read more

I had high hopes, but I was shocked by how dirty this location was. Tables were not wiped, and the floor was gross. To make matters worse, the young woman working the register (colored hair) was EXTREMELY rude to me. She was dismissive and acted like I was bothering her. I did not feel comfortable ordering food in such a filthy environment and walked out. Truly terrible management. Save your money and go to a better sandwich shop nearby in Aloha. read more

What can I say, I have been coming here since I was 16, that is almost 24 years ago. Over the years the flavor has changed just a bit and so has the portions but they style and the way they build it is still the same. Just be sure to order enough to kill the sandwich the same time you eat it. My appetite has changed over the years and when I have leftovers of my foot long the next day, the bread was hard as a rock, which is not what I remembered from times before. But overall, order enough for your meal without a doggy bad and you will be set! read more

Cozy space that delivers fresh subs with fast service and great employees. Was greeted by all employees walking in and when I was leaving too. Walked in with two subs in mind, the employee recommended the turkey bacon avocado which was a great choice. Subs come on choice of white or wheat bread, and standard toppings of mayo, mustard, tomatoes, lettuce, red onion, oil, and vinegar. Even with the oil and vinegar, the taste wasn't over powered by these flavors. The bread was crisp and crunchy and the turkey was thin and plentiful as the meat is cut to order. This makes me sad, but this place has fallen off, big time. What was once my favorite sub shop on the West side is now a shell of its former self. I think they're simply employing people who don't care about making good sandwiches. The last few times we've gotten them, they've been very mediocre. Last night was the last straw. I ordered my favorite sub from Monkey's, the turkey bacon avocado. There was barely anything in it. It had a couple pieces of turkey, a little bacon, and some onion. I never even tasted avocado. It was 95% bread, and on top of that, the bread seemed old. It was extraordinarily chewy. I've never had a sandwich make my jaw hurt before. So unfortunately, I'm done with Monkey's. Hopefully they turn it around and hire some people that can make a good sub, but I am not wasting my money ($15 for a footlong!!!!) when I can spend far less at Jersey Mike's and get a much better sandwich. read more

Their Philly Dip is amazing. It's a French Dip... but better! Has Swiss cheese, green peppers and onions. The bread they use is so fresh. The overall sandwich itself is juicy and very delicious and leaves your mouth watering for more! I order this every time our work orders lunch in from Monkey Subs! RAW BACON I used to like this place. I wish I could rank them 0 stars.The last 3 times, we have ordered, they added unwanted items (that were requested "not" to be on it) to the sandwich. Tonight 3 of the 4 subs had so much mustard scraping it off didn't make a difference- It was beyond saving. What I DID find on 3 of the 4 sandwiches was URENDERED RAW bacon! Absolutely disgusting. Fun local place to grab a sandwich. I am bothered by the fact that there are any negative reviews because I have been with Monkey Subs since the beginning. They have always financially supported local kids (sports teams/ events) and advertised as such. The vibe is always a fun 80's Hip Hop theme and everyone who works there is super cool. I have met the owner several times and he has made my sandwich several times! I feel if people want a "chain" experience they can choose that, but personally I am a fan of supporting local people who employ local young folks, and makes a good sandwich. read more

It's in a strip mall, an unassuming little spot that turns out to be warm and welcoming when you go in. I got a 6" veggie that was satisfying, fresh and just what I needed for my day. In the last 2 years eating here, portions are smaller and we found out the ingredients aren't as fresh OR local as we had be told. Getting confirmation from employees and mgmt at the big store next door, we decided we just can't spend another $9 on a small sub, when we can literally get a 2-foot sub (same ingredients) next door for $5. Nothing worse then brown lettuce. Yuck. Got a 6" Monkey wrench ...got home looked and there was brown lettuce which is just wrong. Why would you build a sandwich with brown lettuce, guessing left over from the weekend. Definitely not fresh. Called them back and they said to come back and they would make another one. Yum, and yum. The only place in the area that does a solid sub with quality ingredients. Costs a teeny bit more than all the crappy chains, but soooooo worth it! The full size sub is bigger than 12", the meat is freshly sliced (sliced for every order!). All ingredients are super-fresh, staff is very nice, quick, and always accommodate my complicated orders. Keep up the good work guys! I only wish there was a location in Hillsboro, and that the inside was a little bigger... Line is out the door sometimes during lunch. read more

Monkey's was a definite "go to" before last week. Pre-ordered 2 sandwiches for the Superbowl Saturday night from the Aloha store. My better half enjoys veggies and cheese, no meat. I made this clear in the comment section of my order. Picked up the sandwiches Sunday, discovered hers had turkey/bacon when I got home. Called, they graciously offered to remake. No problem. I drove back down, picked up the sandwich, got home excited to enjoy (my hot? pastrami was lukewarm by now) only to find the remake was also incorrect. Missing the avocado this time. Didn't bother calling again, frustrated....put an avocado we had on her sandwich. It's unfortunate, we really like Aloha Monkey.
