The customer service is poor and unfriendly, the waiting room and bathroom was the cleanest I've ever seen at auto shop so they get props for that, they kept my spare I had to call them to get it back, so all in all I can't say if I feel good about going back. read more

I went to Phil's auto clinic for help with my car. I paid for them to diagnose a problem which was incomplete in my opinion. They did not tell me the cause of the main issue, only the possibilities. Recently, my 2001 Honda Insight (hybrid) went completely haywire and was not sure that I wanted to put the money into saving my little gas miser. I finally decided to have it taken to Phil's Auto Clinic in Hemet (which was 60 miles from my location); what a blessing it was! The service was incredible! As soon as the car was delivered (by tow truck) they were right on it and had diagnosed and priced in a short time. I was extremely pleased with the price of the installed, rebuilt (hybrid) battery and had additional repairs done while it was there. When I went to pick up my Honda, I was very pleased to find a shop that was as clean and professional as any dealer that I have been to. I took about 15 minutes of Phil and Bryan's time asking questions about my hybrid; to which, they answered and were extremely cordial. I would have no hesitation about bringing any of my cars to Phil's Auto Clinic; I just wish they were closer to where I live, but in spite of that, I will be back. I feel that the service I received from Phil's does not match the standards normally expected from auto repair shops in our community. The clutch pedal stopped working on my car and I had the car towed to Phil's for diagnosis. They said the clutch was bad; it was old and I agreed it needed replacement. The estimate for installation of a new clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing was $972. I then called PepBoys and received an estimate of $672 for the same job, and around $730 with a 15 month warranty. Like the review above, Phil's price was very high. The estimate included $302 for a NAPA clutch set. I went down to NAPA in Hemet and was told the list price for the clutch set was $206 and their over-the-counter price to me if I bought it at that time (February, 2014) was $123.76. Phil's had marked up the cost by 144%! I talked to Brian, the service manager, about the high charges and he gave me a ten percent discount on parts, either a senior discount or AAA discount, I can't remember. He also reduced the high $75 charge for turning the flywheel to $50. Still the final estimate was over $900. Phil's had estimated a few days to complete the repair so I rented a car for that period. After three days they called to say they discovered a broken pin that needed to be replaced and would need to order it from the dealership. I used to be an auto mechanic so I went down to look at it. I discovered the pin was responsible for the original problem, namely, the clutch pedal not working. It appeared to me that they were just routinely replacing the clutch assembly and had not looked for what was causing the pedal to be non-functional which in most shops would be the first order of business. It took a few more days to finally receive the part which cost me more for the rental car. My main complaint is that when I got the car I found that the clutch pedal would vibrate against my foot when I shifted gears between 4,000 and 5,000 RPM. The engine redline is 7,000 RPM so the symptom is right in the middle of the RPM range. It would also make a big moaning sound at the same time. I did not have this symptom before taking it in. I wondered what the heck was going on. I took the car back and Phil drove it and experienced the vibration and moaning. He told me he didn't know what it was but assured me that he felt it was totally unimportant and not to worry. I thought how could someone say it was not important when he didn't know what the problem was. I asked Phil would he fix the issue and cover it in his two year warranty for this job and he said no. I said well I'm uncertain about this and am I supposed to worry over the next years if this is going to break or not? Phil said to take it to another shop if I wanted to find out what it is. And don't worry because if anything goes wrong I'm covered by his two year warranty. I would have liked Phil to say, "Hey, something is definitely going on here, let me talk around with some of my industry contacts and get back to you." But that was not to be. I've taken it to other shops and was told that something is out of balance - either a defective part or an installation issue - people have come across this problem before. I paid a premium price at Phil's which was not justified, considering the poor quality of the job and the unwillingness of Phil's to stand behind their work. I do not recommend this shop. read more

Took our van to Phil's for a coolant leak. Were quoted almost $1000.00 were called back later that day and were surprised to find out it would only be less than $300.00 what a refreshing change to find an honest car repair place thanks and we will be going here to get things done in the future. read more

My pregnant wife went there to fix her radiator and A/C. They fixed the Radiator and bumbled the A/C when we took it back the next day for the A/C they wanted more money to diagnose it!! My father in law even found a knife in the engine compartment. And Im not talking pocket knife it was at least a six inch rusty rambo knife! So we took our car to Nissan dealer and they fixed our A/C by charging the system and plugging it in, Thanks Phil!! Total cost $40.00 for the A/C charge! Now the radiator $350 at phils to install and purchase it, two years later I took my car in and the radiator had a un fixable leak that was caused by metal fatigue by either the manufacturer or by the mechanic over tightening it. Yeah Phil's was cheap and it was awesome to find it that cheap but now I know why! When I called Phil's the answered the phone while they were talking to a customer didn't greet me and finally after 30 sec said yeah what can I do for you? I asked to speak to the manager and he said yeah what do you want!!! Really???? I told him my problem with the radiator and he snickered and said its been two years the warranty has expired what do you want me to do? I told him what the dealership told me and he said ok what do you want? I just was curious about the warranty if any because the dealership said after market radiators usually have a 5 year to total replacement warranty. I guess not at Phil's it was only two years. So now I payed a little more for a new radiator with a lifetime warranty parts and labor included. My suggestion to you is go to phil's if you want a cheap quick fix but know they will not be friendly when you return for warranty issues unless your willing to pay more! Save your money and go spend a little more at a dealership or a garage with a little more class and dignity. read more

I live in apple valley, california. It was hard to find any place close by that works on prius vehicles, my wife found Phil's on the internet. I thought Sure, I'll try Phil's auto clnic & see. I took my 2006 toyota prius to Phil's auto clinic. This was regarding my hybrid battery. I wanted the Original Prius Battery fixed, Phil's told me they would replace the bad cells on my battery. Instead they replaced my original battery with a generic battery, they had at their shop. Which I was not informed this was done. A few months later, my wife & I went to John Elway toyota dealership in Ontario, California. This was to repair a few things on the car. The Tech from toyota, told me that the battery was having issues, & I would need to get it fixed, before any work could be done on the car. I, then said that I went to Phil's Auto Clinic in Hemet & the battery was replaced. Next, the toyota Tech said "That's to bad, if you had the original battery it is still under warranty & we could replace it for free". I suspect I was charged $3,500 for the battery, but Phil's traded in the battery to toyota for $3,000. When you first to go to Phil's they are very kind & friendly. When I then asked them issues regarding my prius, they should have known, but they had no idea what they were talking about. I would not go back to Phil's for anything. read more

I have been going to Phil's for just over a year they service both my cars. It is nice having an alternate to Toyota to work on my Prius. Brought it in on a Friday for a quick diagnostic review they handed me a quote and performed a semi major repair and I was back on the road for a few bucks less that the estimate. They were even kind enough to wait around on a Saturday (bike ride took a bit longer then expected) for me to pick up my other car that was there getting smog and oil change performed. I will return and recommend those needing Prius work in the Valley to at least give them a shot! read more

Phil's Auto is great!! These other two reviewers are stupid about cars. My husband and I have had Phil's Auto Clinic do all of our cars and our kid's cars. We have never had a problem, but them again we drive our cars for ever and keep them well maintained....thanks to Phil's. When our children visit from Colorado....they always want appointments to get things done because they want it done right the first time.....and any work they do is guaranteed. They had funky problems with my AC and kept after it (free) until it was solved. Great place if you are the type of person who takes care of your car. read more

Update: I returned to Phil's to buy a new battery due to corrosion pointed out at my oil change and bought a new Napa battery based upon the owner's recommendation of that brand being superior to the brand I previously had (which was almost five years old). After the battery installation I experienced a few days of difficulty in starting my 2006 Scion, an issue I had never had before that in the history of the car. I alerted the owner to the details of my issue and he suggested that they replace the new battery in case it was a lemon which they did at no charge. Unfortunately the problems continued (right through a time when I was moving in June and really needed my car to be reliable, very stressful) so I doubt that it was the battery itself being bad, and told this to the owner who asked me to keep him posted. Perhaps adjusting to the new efficient battery had overloaded the other older components - not sure. A mechanically-inclined neighbor said he thought the issue was some sort of "vapor lock". Oddly enough a few days later the problem resolved itself as suddenly as it began and has not happened again. The owner Bryan was very responsive and I would not hesitate to go back to this facility again. read more

Phil's ROCKS!!! I have had unbelievably good luck! I own two 2002 Toyota Prius. Battery 2 years ago went out on one Prius, had it rebuilt for $2000. My other Prius battery just went bad, and Phils was able to get me a Gen 1 battery BRAND NEW and installed for $2800 including taxes. The Toy Dealer in Poway, CA wanted about $4500 for a battery, a huge markup. Also, the electric motor windings on one of my prius's went bad, limited electric motor power. The dealer was going to replace the entire transaxle at a HUGE cost. Phil's was able to disassemble the transaxle and replace only the bad part (motor), again saving me thousands. They can get the part from the dealer, but the dealer seems to replace everything in the path rather than only the actual part that is the cause of the problem. For major hybrid repairs, I always do the long road trip from San Diego to Hemet, it as been well worth it for me. Too bad they are not in San Diego, I would have gotten all my other work done there as well. Best regards, Eric read more
