Very few and far between do I find a really great burger place...and this is one of them! I've only been once, and it was right before they closed (so there wasn't a line or long wait). Located in the "Austinville" center of 78750 off 183 (look for the iFly and Amy's Ice Cream before Anderson Mill. Take the McNeil exit if heading north on 183, same if heading south). They have a really big menu, painted on the wall so they must be committed to keeping this level of items. All burgers are named after parts of Austin, I ordered the Rosedale (because it was a place I used to live, and I also like BBQ ). This was a great BBQ burger. The buns are really good too! Not crumbling or anything cheap. You can also get your fries mixed (sweet potato and regular), which are also really high quality. The staff is really cool and very nice. The place is clean and open. Meh. The missus wanted a gourmet burger... checked the menu and said "Lets Go!" (Maine Root gets me errytime!) Sunday - during the game. Not crowded at all. Ordered my food (bacon burger grilled onions fries) paid and sat down. My burger was - overcooked. That was TOTALLY my fault. I like em med/rare and didn't request it (Darnit!). - missing aforementioned grilled onions (da' fuq??) - fries weren't fresh - which @ the Scottish restaurant I've been known to frequent (Hey Golden Arches) it's kinda okay; I mean for a 1.19 burger and 1.00 fries you can shut it!... but when I am paying a premium AND have to wait for the burger anyway.... party foul! Tasty burgers and nice variety of options. Yummy sweet potato fries and onion rings as well. Portions are great if you're super hungry or big enough to share. Great playground outside for the kiddos and plenty of seating both inside and out. Kids burgers are a bit pricey IMO but it's worth it for a fun spot. read more

Here's the skinny about Phil's Icehouse: The sourdough burger buns are great. The burgers/fixings/prep/presentation need major work -- kitchen staff seems to rush it out. They loaded on the mayo (gross) burger was undercooked, almost medium rare when they said it would be medium well (gross). Giant slabs of lettuce - it was not consumable, had to remove it. The burger disintegrated before I could finish it into a giant pile of mushy stuff. This place is super popular with the families because of the playscape - it's insane. At 7pm here, there must be 200+ people with kids running around, it's loud. Love the Maine soft drinks, those are good. Fries/onion rings were ok but not great. Place just needs work, they rush it too much, turns out wrong. read more

Finally made it to Phil's. It was delicious. They make their burgers with that yummy chargrilled taste! It was also massive, esp for the price. I can't fathom why anyone ever chooses fast food burgers when places like Phil's are around. It was really awesome that you are able to do a mix of sweet potato and regular fries for no extra charge. I can never decide which I want so this was a fun surprise. They also had a great selection of beer available. The place was super clean, the staff was "Austin" friendly and overall just a really pleasant experience. I don't have children but this would be a great place to bring your kiddos. I'd been enjoying coming to this Phil's location since last summer but my family and I have decided we won't be going back anymore. I would say that the last half dozen times we've gone our order has come out wrong, or food was burned/improperly cooked. Also, whoever the male cashier has been in our last couple of visits has been extremely rude and his bad attitude really makes dining there an uncomfortable experience. I was running an errand for someone and they told me they wanted food from this restaurant. I honestly didn't know it existed since it's well hidden next to Main Event and ifly. But the service I received there was so welcoming. Specifically, a really nice employee, Bri, was so kind and helpful to me. She was real personable and an overall lively person. First of all, I need to commend the manager, Christian, for reaching out to us and asking us to give Phil's another chance. Knowing that it was a recent opening and they were still working out kinks, we were happy to oblige. I have to tell you, this was a completely different experience than the first time. The place was crowded and running like a well oiled machine. All three of us really enjoyed our meals. I had the mini burger sampler and both sweet potato and regular fries and it was YUMMY. Everything was hot and fresh. My husband had a double burger and fries, which he enjoyed very much and my little one devoured her corn dog before running off to play with friends we just happened to see there. Overall, a great experience and fun place to go on a nice day. We will definitely be back, which is so nice because it's so close to us. Please don't come for the food. Phil's is a great place for families due to the playscape and sharing a building with Amy's Ice Cream, but the food leaves a lot to be desired. The first visit we came, the sweet potato fries had a weird bitter flavor on them similar to chemical bug repellant and my child's hot dog was just awful. The hot dog had the consistency of a convenience store hot dog rotisserie or hot dogs that have been floating in a hot water bath all day long. I also had a chicken sandwich that quickly fell apart from a high level of sogginess. The second time we came, the hot dog was given a second chance, but was exactly the same. In addition, I ordered a Frito pie that was so cold that the cheese didn't melt. Despite the serious undesirability of the food, the playscape is well maintained and a fun break for kids. Also, Amy's is great and helps you forget about the food next door. Have dinner elsewhere and then come for dessert and playing. read more

Hello Phil's Ice House Manager or Owner, Love your restaurant. Rosedale Burger is the best. FYI. Something you might want to look into: This location has a "phone off hook" problem. Ex: Last Friday called Phil's Icehouse at 9:15 PM, busy signal. 9:20 PM, busy signal. 9:25 PM, busy signal etc. Upon arriving at 9:45pm, I asked "Where is the phone that rings when someone calls the restaurant?" Answer- "We don't take phone orders after 930.". What about at 9:15? "It's really easy to not hang up the phone correctly. I'll fix it. " That could certainly be the case. However, I have worked in restaurant operations at a large chain. 100% of the time, Phone off hook complaints from customers were caused by employees who took the phone off the receiver so that they would not have to take calls or orders, especially near end of shift. Employee still gets paid the same amount, but they have less work to do. I realize that restaurant profits in general are thin and very sensitive to Theseoperations issues.I know that these lost orders could mean the difference between breaking even or losing money in a given day. So I thought you might want to know. Suggestion-ask all your night staff what problems they have had with hanging up the phone correctly. Tell them your policy. Then, periodically audit. For small chain you could even enlist your favorite business minded teenager to periodically call and keep a log of phone off hook records for all your stores at various times during the day, but especially near closing time, for a two week period at different times during the quarter. read more

They have definitely increased their consistency since opening, and we've been back several times (and will likely be back more so in the future). I would caution, though - stick with the fries. The onion rings have never been good. the last order we received was a wad of onion with a pile of breading on it. Two of us at Phil's Icehouse on a Sunday around 11:45 AM. Phil's is clean and well lit. Music was upbeat and at a moderate volume and televisions were tuned to sports and iFly. The cashier greeted quickly and in a neutral manner. I ordered mixed fries and a soda and asked that my burger be cooked medium instead of medium well. My friend ordered the same. I do not recommend the Maine Root diet soda. It was flavorless and/or the mix had way too much carbonated water on this particular day. My friend enjoyed the Maine Root Root Beer. The burgers... oh, the burgers. They were not awful, but compared to Hopdoddy or even Moonie's Burgers (not the one at Anderson Mill, yuck... but the one up the road @ Park Street in Cedar Park)... or have you tried Liberty Burger in Dallas(?)... we just drew a blank with our Phil's Icehouse burgers. The meat on both burgers was very thin and had not much flavor at all. Neither burger was cooked medium, but with patties that thin, it's probably hard to cook them other than medium-well or more. My friend liked the flavor of the egg and bacon on his Jollyville burger (the egg was cooked well, just a bit runny), but otherwise the burger was ordinary, the meat patty was thin and flavorless, and the sourdough toast "bun" was so hot and soggy on the bottom, it was very hard to eat the burger. My Violet Crown burger was nothing out of the ordinary either. If I got a jalapeno cheese bun with my burger, I am not sure what the difference between this bun and a plain sourdough bun would be. I neither saw nor tasted jalapeno, and I was looking forward to a little "zing." Also, I tend to like a sharper, saltier bleu cheese, and my burger had a small mound of muddled-tasting cheese placed in the middle of the burger patty. My burger patty was also thin (way more bun than meat), pretty tasteless, and cooked through.... not medium. We each ordered the mixed traditional French Fries and Sweet Potato Fries. Neither order of our fries was particularly hot or crisp. My friend's fries were lightly salted, but I think someone completely missed the "salt step" on mine. Of course, you can add salt at the table, but I prefer my fries hot, crispy and somewhat salty from the get go. We both liked the Sweet Potato Fries better than the traditional fries. Partway through our meal, a very friendly woman came over, smiled and said "hello," and asked us if our meal was alright. Toward the end of our meal a young man came over and quickly checked on us as well. He offered to take our trays and as we were getting up to leave, he smiled and thanked us for coming in. We really appreciated these efforts from Phil's staff. I might try Phil's again because the staff was friendly, it was clean and pleasant, and perhaps we were just there on an "off day" for the food. We would both definitely try different burgers though, and I'll just order water. Their only choice of soda is Maine Root, so if Maine Root is not your thing, don't order a fountain soda. I'd like to give Phil's three stars, but for interesting burger places around Austin, two stars here means "Meh. I've experienced better." While we appreciated the service efforts at Phil's, the food was a let down. read more

I love Phil's! They had my had my heart at vegan burger. Yesterday I ordered two vegan burgers to-go but accidentally got the vegetarian patties (contains eggs or dairy). One of my favorite burgers in town. This location is far more comfy than the original and I daresay the food is hotter and fresher as well! My old standby is the 78704 burger but I've really fallen in love with the Holy Fuego lately, it has great toppings yet they are not overpowering the burgery goodness beneath. The burgers are well sized, so beware of that if you're not too hungry! If you want a smaller meal, I recommend the mini burger half basket. I'm pretty sure you can get two different burgers in it if you want to, too. read more

I like Phils and like this location. Nice big open eating area. The burgers at Phil's are consistently good. They sometimes have some technical errors but the flavor and consistency is spot on. Only gripe I have is buns. Sometimes there are bun failures do to them not being sliced or grilled properly. Sometimes the buns are too big. Sometimes too small. I walked in Saturday night at 8:30. There were four people in front of me. They were experiencing issues with the register and the line started to get a little longer after me. The manager called in another person to work the second register. Once the issue she was fixing was clear, she walked off. Soon, both cashiers had problems with taking the next orders and had to page their manager multiple times. When she finally came back, she started to complain to both cashiers that the issue was because using both registers messes up their internet connection. Remember, the manager called on the second cashier to start taking orders, and now, she is complaining that because they both followed her orders, the internet was messing up. She repeated these complaints multiple times. I could see the frustration on both cashiers' faces. I decided to leave because I had enough. The cashiers were both very nice and I have absolutely nothing bad to say about them. I was looking forward to trying this place for the first time, but I don't think I'm ever going back which is a shame because the menu looked pretty good. read more

I'm glad I found this gem. We went with a group for lunch one day. Everyone loved their burgers. I did a build your own with sweet potato fries. The service was great, we didn't have to wait long and all of orders were correct. The buns are very tasty and they have a wide selection of burgers. I'm going to be completely honest- I go out of my way to steer clear of restaurants that cater to families. Kids usually have the run of a place like that, climbing over chairs, crying, racing around the tables, etc. I put the blame for this behavior squarely on parents, who somehow forget about basic manners when their kids are in their orbit. They not only let their children behave like animals, they are obnoxious themselves. I can't tell you how many times I have encountered a parent who was in their own world as they watched over their little one. Hey dad, how about having the decency to hold the door open for other people, as well as your kid? How about putting the smartphone down so you can tell your kid to quit bothering the poor lady that's trying to eat her meal? You will see all of these things and more at Phil's Icehouse. On any given weekday night, you will see at least two children running around tables, repeatedly going in and out of the side door that leads to the playground, hogging the bathrooms, etc. So why the four star review? Because the food really is that good. The cheeseburgers are as good as any you will find in north Austin, and the fries are actually good the next day. Unbelievable, right? But it's true, and it actually makes me forget about the fact that this is a place that caters to a clientele that I typically avoid. Now granted, I will get my food to go depending on how crowded it is, but there are definitely moments when the restaurant quiets down and you can enjoy a really great meal that is prepared by an incredibly friendly staff. Don't get me wrong- I know full well that I am injecting my bias into this review, and I understand that this atmosphere appeals to a VERY large segment of the population. North Austin is the suburbs, after all. So if you are looking for a family restaurant that has great amenities for your kids, along with great food, then this is definitely right up your alley. Just TRY to mind your kids (as well as your own manners) when you get here, ok? It will make a great restaurant even better. read more

I hate writing this because I love Phils, but Friday night (1/27/17) we came in at 8:56 and we're told the register had been closed. While I know from working in restaurants that I hate the 5-minutes-to-close customers, but as a manager of restaurants and having integrity and care about my customers, I've kept my doors open an extra hour to feed baseball teams, etc.. What is normally a great place to take the kids and have a great time... was offensively terrible today. Apparently Amy's ice cream management allowed a family to set up an extremely loud karaoke at the edge of the playground. Majority of kids were holding their ears as they walked by while the family's daughter belted our song after song. We tried to get the father to reduce the volume... he refused. Tried to get management from Phil's or Amy's to help intervene and they acted powerless. Not sure what this was all about. But perhaps this is going to be a regular thing for this location. I would strongly suggest going to a different outdoor/patio style restaurant with your kids. These guys have lost control over their private establishment. read more

On a whim, I frequented Phil's for lunch recently. When in Austin, I feel a need to try most every place. I ordered a chicken sandwich on wheat, and the significant other ordered the "78704" burger. I cannot tell you how much I loved the bread. Ok, I can, but it's hard to put into words. I'll just say I liked the bread so much, that I was in a pure state of bread-happiness. Looking for a place with children entertainment? This is the place to be because of the playground set the have. It does get pretty busy since there aren't that many restaurants with play area around town. I like how there's food and dessert for adults and kids, so everyone is happy. The burgers are good, but I've had better. You get half sweet potato fries and regular fries with your burger meal but not so much.. It's like a taste sampler if you get the half and half fries. I mainly come here so my son can have some fun. Although he likes his nuggets and fries here so that is a plus! The staff here are friendly so that is a plus also! read more

Recently we had an extremely busy week and ordered take out here twice in one week. Their food was great, but they missed extras we ordered, and paid for. The first time we just figured it happens sometimes. We ordered online and perhaps they just didn't notice the jalapeños and franks hot sauce on the order. But 2 days later when the exact thing happened again we called and let the manager know. Maybe there was an issue in translation with their computer or something, who knows. Anyway he was extremely nice and apologetic and promised there would be a free burger correctly made the next time we came in. And there was, both of them! The buns are a little sweet, meat is good sized and well proportioned to bun. Everything is really fresh and good. Their onion rings are better than Top Notch! Fries are also good, they're the thicker standard variety not usually particularly crispy but also not soggy. The prices are good, especially for the abundance of food you get. The kids meal fries are the regular sized fries, too. The playscape is pretty awesome, but I wish it were entirely enclosed for the younger kids. All in all a great place with good food and employees who own their mistakes and fix the problems. read more
