Disclaimer: I only tasted their veggie burger. I put only healthy stuff on it so my experience may have been influenced by my poor judgement. It was ok after I added a lot of ketchup. With friends who were willing to wait more than an hour for their food last night (Friday). Only one cashier & one other person running between clearing off but not cleaning tables & distributing the food once it was done. Such an inefficient system. My burger was tasty although it was not served in the sour dough bun listed on the menu. I suppose they ran out & substituted. The onion rings were very good. My friends loved their food. Ok, so I've seen this place listed in a number of Austin's Top Burger lists but never bothered to go because the pictures that I've seen have been kinda 'meh.' Presentation, after all, is a big part of the dining experience (especially in today's IG/social media-centric world), so if something isn't particularly eye catching, chances are I'm just going to try something else. It just so happened that a local food delivery app offered free delivery today so I gave Phil's a shot since I wanted to try something new. Wow, am I glad I did. I ordered a Phil-a-buster which was an absolute monster. Yes it's big, fat, ugly, and messy. I didn't even bother taking a pic because it was a mess by the time it had arrived at my door, but dear lord was it delicious. The patties were incredibly flavorful and the side of onion rings definitely hit the spot. I also usually don't care too much about the bun, but the Jalapeño bun added a nice touch of sweetness to the burger which was a nice surprise. This is a serious burger folks - you're gonna need both hands and a stack of napkins ready. Shout out to Phil for making a burger that's substance over style! read more

Decided to take a little drive and try something new... Being this was my first time finding the place, it was a little hectic with the traffic from the highway service road. It's tucked away in the same building as Amy's Icecream. So follow the signs for Amy's icecream if you can't see the "Phil's Icehouse" sign from the highway. Phil's icehouse will be "Suite P" in this building. The atmosphere is extremely casual and family friendly with long picnic and regular tables inside (some are closed for social distancing). The location appears to share a playground with Amy's Icecream next door, which seemed very popular. The staff was friendly with great recommendations and were masked up. They have quite a good menu with both burger and non-burger (hotdogs and chicken) items. My burger was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. I liked the fact they offer the mixed regular and sweet potato fries as a side item (sometimes you just want a sampling of both). I ordered a "Moocha Milkshake" for a desert and it was delicious. Will I come back? Absolutely. Give this place a try if you're tired of the same old burger places. read more

Oddly enough I have not broadcast my thoughts on this place yet! We've been a billion times as evidenced by the boatload of Phil's plastic cups that I have cluttering my cabinets. The Good: Kid friendly. If you don't have kids, ehhhh maybe don't go, you'll just get annoyed. I LOVE the mini burger basket. I get two totally different things and you're not stuffed to the gills and feeling gross. The buns are great, soft and sweet . . . am I still talking about hamburgers here? I love the Violet Crown and the 78704. I had the Balcones chicken sandwich once and it was deeeelicious! No weird chicken bits that have normally put me off of chicken sandwiches here. The fries have never been anything all that exciting so if they could improve that would be something to consider. Usually the burgers are cooked medium well ish - though there have been a couple of times that you get something that resembles a hockey puck and THAT is disappointing. All in all it's a great place to take the kiddos, because they have the fenced in play area and ice cream at Amy's attached. The Bad: It's loud, sometimes a little sticky and 1/5 times your burger will be overcooked and the fries will be lackluster, but let's get real - it's better than most places that you can take your kids to. read more

Ambience - This place is tucked away behind/beside iFLY and doesnt really have any signage to know its there. It is directly connected to an Amy's Ice Cream store and has a huge playground in the back. Interior is kinda old fashion and country, got picnic tables and lots of wooden paneling and warm colored painted walls. The menu board is painted onto the back wall with is kinda cool. When i got there this place was balling out of control, lots of guests and surprising to me, was there was a ton of kids. Very kid friendly joint. Menu - This is a burger joint thru and thru so it has the main staples of burgers, cheeseburgers, chicken burgers and so on. One of their signature things is that your order comes with half sweet potato fries and half normal fries. Nice touch to add a little extra variety to the standard burger and fries. They have several beers on tap and a selection of other beers as well. Makes for an awesome place for families and let parents have some fun too. The burgers are all named after Austin neighborhoods, districts or zip codes. They do have a couple different kinds of buns like sourdough and some kind of jalapeno bun. Most the burgers have the normal toppings to be expected but they do have variations like a BBQ burger, mushroom melt and even a breakfast burger. Nice variety of burgers, non-burgers and alcohol. Service - Got in during the lunch rush but was the first in line. Lady at the register was pleasant, told me to take my time since the menu is vast and to let her know when i was ready. The man behind the counter that was expo'ing was really friendly as well. Gotta kinda be when you have to call out each order by name over the mic. LOL. I observed the crew make their rounds thru the dining room cleaning and whatnot so that is a good sign. The service was right at good. Food - I got the Brentwood burger which is basically a bacon chesseburger with the normal fixin's. (Lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mayo and mustard) I got my tray of food and the burger looks really big but the bun they use is actually the biggest part, it is a big top and bottom bun. I could barely see if there was anything in it when i got it. The mix of fries was a nice touch and i totally enjoyed being able to have both. The fries were 85% good. I say that because 85% of them were hot and fresh and seasoned lightly. The rest were super old and cold fries. No biggie really since it was the rush and i got a few that have been chilling under the heat lamp getting a tan. Fries were good, so now for the burger. I take my first bite and all i really get is bread and some of the add ons. One in particular was a pickle. After a few more bites i realize this burger was not assembled well. Bout halfway thru all i had was a top bun because all the insides started to move. Thats ok because the bun was very dominating, it took away to much of the other ingredients. So the last half of my burger i was finally able to start tasting everything else. The beef had a nice flavor very moist an hot and lots of juicy dead cowness. The meat itself was great but with all the bread i could barely taste it for the entirety of my meal. So my burger for me was ok. The reason is each bite there were only 3 main items i tasted the entire time that dominated the rest of the flavors. With all the bites i took all i could taste was bread, pickle and mustard. I dont know if that is due to maybe my burger was made wrong, assembled wrong or someone got heavy handed with the mustard and pickle. The main downfall, for me at least, is there was so much bread. The bread was actually really tasting, kind of a sweet and buttery bun, but that shouldnt be the star. The bun was just too large for the meat to bun to condiment ratio. So the bun either needs to be smaller or the patty bigger..or both. But that is just my opinion. But my opinion is about as useful as Rosie O'donnell's personal trainer. Overall - The food for me was a 3 star but i gave a 4 star because of what this place is. The amount of business men, families and other guests was outstanding. The concept here of a truly family restaurant is very prominent. This place was packed with kids on a Thursday afternoon, like McDonalds doesnt even have that.....but thats probably because...well... its McDonalds. Point being is that the whole vibe here and what they are striving for is wonderful. I know they are doing something right because this place was packed to the brim. I had to sit next to strangers, do you know how many years of being told not to go near strangers, just to have to go to strangers. LOL, i kid....but seriously. Plus there may be a better burger suited to my likes. There were several other kinds of buns and burgers to choose from. I am definitely looking forward to trying them again, because aside from the dominatrix I call bread, the beef was really good and thats who should be the focus of the burger with the rest to compliment the dead cow goodness read more

Phil: I LOVE your location on Burnet Road. But the 183 location? Honestly, I didn't even recognize it as a Phil's. It was a lot less clean than the Burnet location. And the food? VASTLY different. None of our burgers were cooked nearly as well done as the other location. The toppings were much skimpier and the burgers were put together pretty haphazard. Two of the burgers came out with the toppings already dripping out of one side. And the fried stuff needed work too. Both orders of fries were much less generous than the Burnet location and needed more time in the fryer. Ditto for the rings. I'll make the Burnet location my default from now on. read more

Last Thursday was our second time at Phil's. The first time we were here, a few years ago, was because our British friend was visiting and wanted an "authentic American burger experience." We had brought him here and everybody had a good time. This time around, we had our 13 month old with us, so it was a matter of peeling her away from the playground so we could eat. She got the two mini hamburgers kid's meal, which was nothing special but good enough. One of us ordered the 78704 burger with a combo fries of regular and sweet potato; the other got their monthly special, the Andy Cap, which was BBQ sauce-focused. Both were solid, although we liked the 78704 better. Portions are generous, fries are hot, beers are cold, prices are good, and the old timey/grungy atmosphere is welcoming. My husband and I just moved to Austin, we were at Southwest KIA today and the guy helping us out (Brandon) suggested Phil's. He recommended the mini sliders saying they were the best burgers in town. I absolutely love Phil's Ice house. I been going to them for so many years. I went in to the restaurant at Anderson Mill to enjoy my favorite Highland Hill Buffalo Chicken sandwich . I wanted to sit there and enjoy every bite but it was so hot in the restaurant. One of the employers said that the A/C was down and wasn't sure when it was going to get fixed. I will still give this place a 5 star just because they have great customer service as always. I had to take my sandwich in a to go bag and eat it in my car in my A/C which was uncomfortable. Got some burgers here bc its right next door to Amy's Ice Cream. Customer service is ok, nothing to write home about. I will provide you with my experiences, I'm not trying to bag on them, because other people might like it. However, I am NOT very fond of the buns they use here. They are Brioche buns which are super sweet in my opinion. If you are not into sweet with your savory, then this will most likely turn you off like it did me. Every bite was sweet, and I could barely taste the thin patty. Unfortunately, no amount of ketchup or mustard could fix my experience, I am truly traumatized. This is by far my go to burger place when I am in Austin. The burger itself is super juicy and seasoned. The highlight of this place is definitely the buns they use. We came here with a party of 8 around 6:15 on a Sunday evening. The order came out quickly and correct. I forget this place is here bc it is tucked back and parking isn't great. Our favorite Phil's location yet!! The staff is ABOVE AND BEYOND kind and helpful. They often spoil us w/ some extra fries or a top off of a beverage and seem to genuinely enjoy being at work. The playscape is wonderful for our kids ages 3-7. The restrooms are always clean and they do a great job keeping the outside play area clean as well. Excellent burgers here, I had the Allandale and I'm a big fan of the buns they use.I'd compare the bun's taste to a King's Hawaiian roll for those familiar. Food The jalapeño burger of the month customized with an added fried egg. The 1/3 pound burger patty was a good size. I wasn't too full or too hungry afterwards. Burger itself wasn't too spicy either.... it had the right amount of heat. Though I do like my food to have a kick, so I requested extra spicy-ness. Crispy freshly-made fries in both varieties (sweet potato and classic) I took it the extra mile and added chili, cheese, and onions. Service You order at the counter. The young woman behind the counter was friendly and very welcoming. She made all kinds of suggestions for burgers as well as beers. Food is good. Fries are fantastic. But let's face it, I've never really cared if the food sucked, I'm here for the playground. My kids love it! If you don't want to wait in the line, ordering online is often faster than waiting in line, I wish they had a "pick up and eat here" option in there app. I can't imagine people ordering their food to go with so many other great options around, but their buns are amazing!
