And let me tell you.. this was the best catfish and shrimp I have EVER tasted in my life, and im fairly picky when it comes to catfish. Most places it tastes dirty.. but not here, it tasted sooo good and the catfish practically fell apart to the touch. Small But Mighty in Taste! We found this hidden gem after the Pfluger annual Christmas parade. We stopped by anticipating some tasty hushpuppies, but boy did we get waaay more! Now the Mac & Cheese Hushpuppies are delicious don't get me wrong, but That Catfish & Shrimp is what the young folk call Bussin! So flaky, fresh, light and seasoned to perfection!! I'm just sad it took me so long find this spot. They are surrounded by great local businesses and parking is available for all. Great food, Great Service, All around great people. With that in mind, this Southern Girl has been looking for decent hushpuppies... last I had outside the South was WAY BACK when Red Lobster still made them. (I stopped going when they got the cheese biscuits!) I had shrimp, jalapeño, bacon STUFFED hushpuppies, corn dog AND onion rings (wanted to sample more but that was too much already.... will have to come back!) After my first trip here it has become a weekly destination. It is a smaller establishment so take out, for me, is the better deal. I have tried almost all the items and can't decide which is my favorite, the enchilada or brisket puppies, or the loaded fries... ALL the options yall!! If you go on a Wednesday GET THE BRISKET. They run a little more but, oh my crap, they are worth every penny! I was fighting my husband for the last one. These puppies are huge so 3 a good portion size. The seasoning was so good we did not need any condiments ( even though I liked having the tartar sauce they provided)! I've been on a disappointing quest to find good cornmeal battered catfish since we moved to the area a year and a half ago and the places I've gone have either had too much flour in the mix or their catfish was cheap and muddy. WELL TODAY WAS THE DAY, I FINALLY FOUND IT! The catfish was perfectly breaded with the right (IMO) blend of cornmeal, the fish was nice and white without the mud water taste. The portions are large. I got the Rob plate which is a fried shrimp and catfish combo with seasoned fries. Definitely recommend! Rob was the one who took our order and was super friendly and accommodating. My husband was supposed to order the hand dipped corn dog but switched it up and ordered the chicken tenders and he said they were good too. So we had to order one corn dog just so we could taste them, they're good as well. But THE STAR of the show were the shrimp and jalapeño stuffed hush puppies, WE LOVED THEM! First, I must say the hushpuppies were delicious! In my most recent visit, we tried the shrimp, jalapeño, and bacon hushpuppies and they were really good. I've only been here twice and we tried the macaroni and cheese hushpuppies the last time. I had the shrimp, jalapeño, and bacon this time. Great hushpuppies. You'll most likely just grab your food and go since there are few sitting options. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak and Philly fries and they were only okay, which is why I gave this place a 3 star. I would like to give them 3.5 stars but that's not an option. The last time I ate the food it was only okay, as well. I'd definitely recommend trying the hushpuppies. I went to the Three Legged Goat yesterday and stopped by Rec's to try the sampler pack. I've been curious about a place centered around hushpuppies. :) They're pretty big so I only ate 2 1/2. The Mac and cheese & the shrimp were great! Hushpuppies can be so different - batter, breading, fine, gritty, dry, moist, light, dense. To me, I think Rec's has a great recipe and it's different than anything I've had before. The batter has the right mix of fluffy lightness and a good grittiness (corn meal). There's also a touch of sweetness, kinda reminded me of Acme Oyster House in that way. The sweet potato fries were good too. That seems basic to say, but you can really f up fries. The cuts were consistent so they were all cooked evenly. Since this place fries a lot of food, I was concerned that fryer oil could impact the flavor but it didn't. Fries tasted like fries. They clean their fryer. The only thing I would like to see is more sides, especially veg. Things that could be done in batch, last a day or more, and be based on season/price - green beans, collards, cole slaw, potato salad, Italian pasta salad, pickled cucumbers/veg, Texas caviar, corn salad - stuff like that would compliment the pups! read more
