I've been coming to this place since I started my freshman year at college. It's such a nice atmosphere to study in and it's usually relatively quiet. They have house plants and string lights everywhere, and it feels very comforting even during finals crunch time. The staff are also always super nice and accommodating. As for the food, I've never ordered their crepes or banh mi but the ube bun is a personal go-to. Get it with the house custard it's worth the additional 50 cents!!! I usually come here for the drinks though, and my favorites are probably their matcha latte, phin ube, and dragonfruit refresher. Just a warning-- this is Vietnamese drip coffee!! It's VERY strong!! I was caught off guard the first time I ordered it, but it's the nice bold kick you need to wake up and start studying. We came here after arriving to our hotel and looking on Yelp for a place to grab breakfast. Phinista had great reviews so we decided to check it out. Unfortunately when we got there they were all out of (or no longer serving) the breakfast sandwiches we wanted. We probably should've left at that point but we were super hungry and it was pretty cold out for us Floridians so we decided to go with the bahn mi since it was highly rated on Yelp. We also ordered some matcha tea lattes to try and keep warm. I will say the sandwiches were ok. Nothing to write home about but not bad either. I wouldn't go out of my way to order it but it wasn't terrible. The matcha on the other hand was bad. It tasted super bitter and even after going back and asking them to add more brown sugar syrup it was still undrinkable. The crepe though was OUTSTANDING. We got the strawberry one that had Nutella and was filled with cream. I would order that and a regular coffee any day of the week. I'd say this is a place to stick to pastries. The people sitting outside at the restaurant next door were all eating giant plates of egg sandwiches with fries and potatoes and mimosas and we were jealous. If you're looking for a hot meal in this area I'd probably go there instead. read more

The 3 stars is mainly because out of the 3 times I've ordered from this restaurant, only ONE TIME did my order NOT get cancelled. Aka 2 out of 3 times I've ordered, 20-30 minutes later I receive an email saying my order was cancelled. When I call the restaurant their excuse is that "they've run out of food". One was a 630pm order - restaurant said they've run out of food and are closing early. Second time was at 12pm noon and again, run out of food. How is this possible? The ONE time I was actually able to get food I would rate the Bahn mi sandwich as a 4 out of 5. The flavor was good, and had all the elements of an authentic bahn mi, but compared to all the Bahn mi's I've had, especially when compared to places in Dorchester, this just isn't as good and also costs more $$$. I also had the Lavender milk tea (hot) which was a little too sweet for my taste but had a full rich flavor. Pro tip is do NOT get the flakes of lavender in the tea if they ask, bc you will literally be spitting out chunks of lavender as you try to enjoy the tea. read more

Decided to make a trip out to fenway to get some Viet coffee and decided to try their banh mi and a rice bowl. The banh mi was nice and crisp so every bite had a nice crunch. The carrots and daikon are cut in thick pieces to add another nice crunch in every bite. Overall a good banh mi, pricier than the ones compared to Dorchester but still reasonable. Most likely due to their prime location in restaurant row. The lemongrass beef was flavorful but the pieces were quite large so it was harder to eat. The rice bowl was the perfect size to feel satiated without feeling you over indulged. The wifey drinks coffee and said the viet coffee was good but she will try a different drink next time. Overall the menu is very comprehensive and its great to have a viet restaurant in the fenway area! read more

My friends and I decided to stop by here for brunch and lattes since we thought the cafe looked pretty nice. Unfortunately, when my friend and I tried to order crepes, the cashier told us that they ran out. We thought this was a bit strange since it was still quite early in the day, but we didn't think too much of it and ordered something else. I ended up getting a Hanoi Croissant, which tasted fine (nothing too special). Shortly after receiving our food, another group of customers entered and ordered crepes. To our shock, the item was suddenly available! Though apparently, they had "run out" just 20 minutes prior. My friend "jokingly" suggested that maybe the cashier was being racist toward us, as we were one of the only POC customers at that time. Honestly, I would be infuriated if that was the case considering that I am Vietnamese-American and Phinista is supposed to be a Vietnamese cafe. Overall, I am extremely disappointed that the cashier blatantly lied and refused to serve us as she did other customers. Outside of the racial reason my friend pointed out, I have no explanation for why we received this treatment; my friends and I always conduct ourselves with politeness and are pleasant-mannered. read more

Came in for a coffee and banh mi since I had heard good things. I got a Phin Buzz which was no joke. I was indeed buzzed for the entire day which may be a good or bad thing depending on your goals. Personally it was too much for me lol and I never ended up finishing the drink. At baseline I drink about a cup of coffee daily and am still sensitive to caffeine so your mileage may vary. I got the grilled barbecue pork banh mi which was delicious! No real complaints there. I do think that the store has a very confusing system for ordering. Their tables have little signs with QR codes on them so most people tend to order on their phones. Theoretically the team can see which table each order came from (I think?) and then deliver the food to the table, but in practice it was rather disjointed. Basically they were calling out orders and you had to go pick them up no matter if you ordered on your phone or at the register. I noticed a group of people who had ordered from a table in the outdoor seating area but didn't come inside. The cashier was calling out their order but obviously no one was coming to pick it up....because they were outside. They either need to make it a true pickup system like a fast food restaurant (i.e. you pick up your order from a designated area) or they need to actually deliver the food (i.e. hand you table numbers). Another thing. The "register" didn't look like a register at all. There's no menu anywhere other than scanning the QR code. Most of the patrons coming in looked very confused as to how to get started, including myself. Finally I sat at the bar and my chair was wobbly af, and also an awkward height. FYI it's usually pretty busy so it may be hard to find seating anyway. Basically I would advise getting takeout if you want to try their stuff because the in person cafe experience was not it. read more

This place is super fun and super insta worthy! They have lots of outdoor seating and their indoor seating is well-spaced as well. Food and drink are excellent and service is quick too. We got our drinks easily within 5 minutes, despite arriving in the morning on Sunday for coffees/teas. Egg coffee was sweat and creamy, the berry matcha milk tea was beautiful and also very strongly matcha-flavored (in the best way), and the croque madame crepe was tasty without being overwhelmingly heavy. Background music was streaming (I'm guessing here) and there were LOTS of gaps and skips with what I suppose was the Internet going in and out. Not that big a deal, but no one did anything to either turn it off or turn it down, and the noise was like fingernails on a chalkboard - irritating to say the least. Love this little local Vietnamese cafe! I work in Fenway and treat myself to Phinista every week. My favorite is the Phin 50/50 which is such a unique drink of half coffee and half oolong tea! I also recommend any of the milk tea drinks, as they steep the tea in the milk directly. The refreshers weren't my favorite, as it was a little sweet for me. I've also tried their bahn mi and love the consistency of the bread where it's just crunchy enough but not destroying the roof of your mouth. I also recommend their matcha and ube buns (if you catch them in stock), they are so so good fresh and also great after you throw them in the toaster oven at home. Today was my first visit to Phinista. My friend joined me and we ordered 2 iced Vietnamese coffee lattes, 2 grilled BBQ pork & 1 classic cold cut Banh mi sandwich. Delicious sandwiches and true to taste Viet iced coffee lattes. I will 100% be returning for their sandwiches and drinks. A lackluster service is what ultimately brings the review to 4 instead of 5 stars. After we ordered, we waited outside. We were provided a buzzer but it's worth noting that it never rang. After a few minutes, the first drink arrived. We reminded the server/barista that we ordered another. She came out with the second drink a few minutes later. Another few minutes went by and our first BBQ sandwich came out. We waited another 10 minutes, looked in the shop, and noticed no workers were preparing food, so I stepped inside to check in on our order. The server who took our order seemed confused when I inquired about the rest of our order. He apologized and they immediately prepared our food. Turns out the person who had made it that day wasn't great and the owner gave me a refund to make things right. They have since turned things around and the quantity of food seems more reasonable.
