This bakery has been around for awhile.. maybe 5 years and is known for their exceptional sourdough breads. I always see them at the good Farmers Markets & they have a beautiful storefront at 1138 W Bryn Mawr in Historic Edgewater! Aside from sourdough...they also do an olive loaf, roasted garlic loaf, jalapeno asiago romano and other various offerings. They also do great croissants & cookies! The latest thing they are offering is Sicilian Pizza on the weekends... it's the hot new thing with The Pandemic & places are popping up all over Chicagoland!! This version is one of the best I've tried edging out Pizza Friendly & Paulie Gee's?! I tried the "Chicago is a Sausage Town" with double fennel & black pepper sausage, fresh tomato sauce, whole milk mozz & hot peppers. For starters... the crust is phenomenal.. crusty on the bottom & light and buttery interior, they said. The ingredients are very fresh & the sauce is excellent.. best I've had! Now... it's only available on the weekends and you have to preorder via Tock by either 1/4 , 1/2 or full sheets. They have 6 different varieties or you can create your own! I've been in here a few times because I want to support local businesses, however, rude staff just doesn't equal happy customers. I wish I had never stopped into this cute, little wonderful smelling haven of delicious baked good. I wish I had never known what deliciousness awaits. I wish I had never tried the almond danish or cinnamon roll. But alas, I did all of those things and now I'm hooked. I've wanted to stop in here for a while after seeing Phlour at farmer's markets in the past but the timing was never right, i.e. I was always walking my dog. I was dog free today and decided to indulge. There were two customers ahead of me when I got there and the customer being helped seemed to have a lot of questions that the girl behind the counter answered patiently. Then the girl just in front me was helped and she seemed to be a regular based on the interaction. When it was my term the girl thanked me for my patience. I asked questions about all the different pastries and she explained them all. I asked for her recommendation and she said the almond danish was her favorite and it reminds her of Paris. I've never been to Paris, but this danish was so good. So light and airy and the almond flavor throughout was spectacular. I also got the cinnamon roll because I'm a glutton for frosting. it didn't look that great out of the carton, kind of bready, dense and eh, but omg were the looks deceiving. it was much lighter than it looked and soooo good. i was only going to eat half but i ended up going back for the other half too, in a classic Shauna move. I do not recommend this place if you don't want to gain another 15 Covid pounds this winter but if you want some of the best pastries I've had then I can't think of another place. read more

I had a great experience at this bakery. I came here after a failed attempt at baking my own bread. I told Gaby about my baking experience and she gave me some great advice for next time. She told me I could call, reach out on social media, or come in with my bread next time so they can help me figure out where I went wrong. The customer service was spot on. I left with some sour dough bread, Sicilian pizza, and bread starter. P.S One of the baker's came out from the back and personally gave me the bread starter. The avocado toast was very good! The bread was some of the best I've ever had and the egg was done perfectly. They do bread very well. It was when we tried to stray from the bread that we were disappointed. 5 stars for the bread and bread based meals, 3 stars for the rest of the menu. I was highly disappointed by the chocolate croissant. I expected more than the small amount of chocolate I found inside. I imagine it would've been better warmed up so the chocolate could melt but I still expected more. The iced coffee and iced tea were just okay. I didn't even know this place was in my neighborhood until today. I didn't even stop and take a picture of the fig danish or my wife's cheese danish as we ate them far too quickly. They were the perfect balance of chewy and fluffy and sweet but not overly so. We also got half of a sourdough loaf which I have not eaten yet but has just the right amount of squish. FYI they don't have any seating available as of yet and appears to have a limited menu though they do have savory options like ham & cheese croissants. Before I say anything else, I have to say that their namesake bread is absolutely freaking amazing. The loaves were still in the oven when I showed up on a random weekday morning, so I ordered breakfast and settled in. The croque madame built on top of their sourdough with a fresh side salad was gorgeous and just perfect. They make a solid cup of coffee which is bottomless, so there were a few people settled in with headphones and laptops, but I came for the goods. I waited for the loaves to cool a bit and snagged a still steaming one to go, along with a perfect, buttery, soul shattering almond croissant as a treat for my sister, because I'm the best, obviously. I'm not ashamed to say that at least a quarter of the warm bread loaf did not make it home that day. read more

We came here for a casual lunch with my daughter one weekend. I loved the name and had to top up on my bread quotient for the day. The high ceilings and factory feel when you walk in is impressive. We ordered a quiche and my husband got a croissant. My daughter just started eating à baguette of bread. The butter they gave us was so flavorful and the bread was perfectly crunchy and so soft on the inside. I was blown away. The quiche was also amazing light texture with rich flavors. We ordered a second quiche. This place is incredible. We will definitely be back. read more

This bakery and cafe started out wonderfully a few years ago but things seem to be on the decline in more recent times. They no longer serve their delicious breakfast options. They no longer serve espresso or espresso based drinks. The lively vibe in the cafe has virutally disappeared. Service has become less engaged. Until very recently however, the baked goods were always wonderful and reliable. But now not so much....The quiches are much smaller than in the past. The butter croissants and the chocolate croissants purchased early the morning recently were clearly a bit stale. So this is no longer a "go-to" place for me, which is quite dissapointing. I wish them well, but they seem to be headed in the wrong direction. read more

So this place has really rude and terrible management and staff. It's definitely not somewhere I ever want to visit again. I certainly wish it was run by someone else or not in the neighborhood. They have promotional menu's on their counters saying breakfast is running till 3pm then they look at you crazy when u tell them their signs on display say otherwise. Phlour toughed out covid and has continued to deliver delicious baked goods. The business is family run and it is not unusual to see one of them in the back working or up front behind the counter. Fair warning they do not bake a ton of things every day so if you want something special call ahead or send them an email to order. There have been a few times when I have arrived late in the morning and the pastry selection is kind of limited. I am a little bummed but at the same time I am happy they are selling out. Definitely like their sour dough breads the olive one is my favorite. I will get it cut in store and it last the week for me. They also make pretzels, which I think are more of a seasonal thing they would do around the farmers market. They do try different things like they were making pizza for a while and they have experimented with sandwiches. I do appreciate them trying different things and it is always cool to get to try their creations. On the not so great side I know they have had some issues keeping good help. Nothing bad about the food just the service was a little less than friendly. Last time I was in December the staff got my order and I was on my way no problems. I would still recommend them if you wanted to pop in for a coffee and a cinnamon roll or scone in the morning. They are a welcome business to that area. read more

Hands down one of the cutest bakery/cafes I've been too. I went in on a early morning for a coffee and breakfast treat and I was served right away. The girl at the counter was ready to help me with a smile on her face! I ended up ordering three sandwiches alongside my order for lunch for me and my coworkers, and they were delicious!! My food was amazing! I ordered a spinach and feta croissant for breakfast and it was so good! It was flaky and the crust melted in your mouth. The sandwich I had for lunch was just as amazing. It has a cranberry spread and mustard that blended so well together. And the fresh bread they make in house was soft and felt like the bread my mom makes at home. This place made me feel like I was at home. It was nice to sit and do work I need to or grab coffee with a friend. I will definitely be visiting again read more

I stopped in here on Tuesday Oct. 25, 2022 for the first time since the start of the pandemic. It used to be my go to place for a sandwich and coffee while my wife got her hair cut at nearby Salon Echo. This time I was rather curtly told that they don't sell decaf coffee. To me this is the same as saying that senior citizens and others who can't tolerate caffeine are not welcome here, so I won't be back. There's a Starbucks a short walk east. Enough said. read more

The sourdough bread at this bakery is simply outstanding and some of the best I've found in Chicago since moving here from San Francisco (which does sourdough extremely well, so my standards were high). The loaf is also large and keeps well even after days. If you're into good bread this is a must-try. I also picked up an almond croissant, but would certainly not recommend it - it was very doughy and flat, with the almond filling tasting too fake for my liking. The other pastries may be good, but I haven't tried and don't think I will. However, I'll always come back for the awesome bread! read more

I can't for the life of me understand why this place has a 4.5 star rating right now. Let me save you the trouble. Don't bother with the pastries here unless you're in the mood for disappointment. It's particularly egregious because they welcome you in with a beautiful ambiance featuring an open pastry kitchen, which made me think that maybe these guys were the real deal. After a brief internal struggle trying to choose between the pecan roll and kouign amann, I chose the latter since it isn't widely available in the city. This was not the crisp, buttery, caramelized goodness that is kouign amann. This was an imposter. I took my first bite into a dry flavorless hunk of bread that immediately reminded me of a Costco croissant (which is actually an insult to the Costco croissant). And somehow it managed to be greasy and dry at the same time. I felt immensely disappointed and oddly..betrayed. Decided to swing by to try out some baked goodies at Phlour after I saw they had kouign amanns on their Yelp page; alas, it might have been just a special at the time as I did not see any kouign amanns listed anywhere when we were there. Bummer. Regardless, we decided to give their croissants a try and got two croissants: chocolate and spumoni. Appearance-wise, both seemed attractive, crunchy, and flakey on the outside. For the chocolate croissant, the inside didn't have enough of that classic, soft, honeycomb shape. Instead, it was a hollow croissant with a thin sliver of hardened chocolate. I wish they had at least offered to warm up the croissant so that we weren't just eating buttered phyllo and hard chocolate. The spumoni croissant was better, and more generous in the filling. The inside was fluffier, and more honey-comb like. I have never had a spumoni croissant before, but I enjoyed the cherry flavors. Though, I wasn't blown away by it. It was just fine. Overall, the interior of the bakery looked nice, and I thought it neat that the kitchen area was transparent for everyone to see. If I'm around the area, I might try out their breads next time. read more

I went into the store yesterday and showed my vaccination card voluntarily. I noticed two employees in the kitchen area (with glassed walls) not wearing masks. I had a coffee and some bread sitting near the window. I looked up and one of the employees was at the counter without a mask speaking to another employee who was wearing a mask. When another customer came into the store, the employee put on the mask. Two employees not wearing masks during this pandemic is unacceptable, when patrons must. I love love love this bakery! Their pastries are legit (the flakiest croissants, delectable cinnamon rolls), their coffee is great (my favorite iced mocha in the neighborhood), and their club sandwich on focaccia is as good as it is big (it's massive). You can see them baking through the glass partition and it's obvious that this is a labor of love. We just discovered that they're doing pizza night on Saturday nights; true to form the pizza was delicious, too. Tip: pastries are BOGO after 5pm so drop in after work! read more

I have been dying for a bakery that serves fresh bread to open near me in Chicago and this answered my prayers. I've had the ciabatta, baguette, and multigrain loaves and they are amazingly tender and stay fresh for a solid week in the freezer if you take care of them correctly (luckily, pHlour gives you instructions on how to store your bread). I come back every week for another loaf and will probably never go back to supermarket bread. The plain croissant is absolute buttery heaven and the chocolate and almond are presumably very good too--however, I didn't get a chance to try them because my Italian class ate them too quickly before I could snag a bite. Next time. The service is very friendly and great about answering questions and the space is bright and comfortable. I can't wait to try more of the menu. And get fat off bread. read more

Continuing my tour of northside bakeries, today I went to Phlour for the second time because the last time I went, they were out of most of the pastries I wanted to try. The first time, I got a cream puff. I was told that it was filled with their homemade whipped cream. I'm more of a custard filling fan but the whipped cream was solid in it's own way. The staff I've encountered have been really great and knowledgeable about their baked goods. I was told when deciding between an almond or chocolate croissant, that their chocolate one is more traditional and doesn't have as much chocolate as I may be used to. The chocolate bars that it did have were delicious. I also got a pain au raisin because between 5-7pm during the week, it's bogo breakfast pastries! This is the only time I willingly choose something with raisins. It was a beautiful pastry and I happily ate it on my walk home. read more

Eh. I've given this pace many chances since it opened, but I'm over it. Incredibly expensive, often out of bread (what bakery runs out of bread at noon on a Friday?), croissants are greasy, the young French woman is SO LOUD it's not easy to relax in here, they don't have many options for non-coffee drinkers, and they keep more random hours then their signage says. Other neighbors have also run into issues here. Maybe they should stick to wholesale sales to restaurants and close the cafe and individual sales. So many times in here to try to buy bread and they're out of selections. Can get a reliable baguette at Mariano's instead. Shame. read more

Giving this bakery 5 Stars and 5 Hearts! I live in Uptown and this bakery is a long walk or quick bike ride away. Their breads and pastries are amazing. I'm partial to their cinnamon scones: simple & satisfying, dense, buttery-goodness. Service is very friendly. Decor is warm and comfortable. When I was there at 2 PM on a Tuesday, almost every table was occupied, yet it was not loud. You could definitely have a nice relaxed lunch and quiet conversation there. High ceilings and lots of space between tables. The Wongkamalasai Family (siblings Melissa & Bobby) are very gracious. Best of all, they made Paczki this year, filling the void left by the sad closing last Spring of Swedish Bakery in Andersonville. And the Phlour Paczki were delicious. For those few outside the paczki loop, paczki are fried yeast donuts from Polish cuisine, typically with fruit filling or custard, traditionally eaten on Paczki Day aka Fat Tuesday. For over 20 years, I placed my Swedish Bakery Paczki order a month ahead of Paczki Day, along with hundreds of other devotees. That's how crazy Chicagoans are for their Paczki. I am over the Paczki Moon that the wonderful bakers at Phlour decided to take on the Paczki Challenge. Fried dough is kinda out of Phlour's wheelhouse. They're primarily artisanal bread makers, and their passion for their craft is obvious when you look at their website or Instagram page, or when you go in to the shop and get a glimpse of the bread racks behind the glass wall. Anyway, the bakers at Phlour had a great first showing for Paczki Day 2018. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that their fillings are richer and more refined than the standard at other long-standing bakeries, including my beloved Swedish. I think this marks Phlour's attention to high quality. BTW I really hope Phlour makes paczki again next year, especially the cream cheese-filled. Yum! read more
