Excellent danish! I usually only get bread but wanted to give their pastries a shot. The matcha was too sweet... It could be pre-mixed. Definitely a new go to for pastries!

This is my go to bakery for my weekly sourdough, and am here frequently getting pastries or drinks. Their sourdough is some of the best i have had, with a such a nice outer crunch and that tangy flavor. They have great pastries, some of my personal favorites being the cinnamon rolls (so soft), pretzels (weekend exclusive) and their ham/cheese croissants. Its hard to go wrong with any choices though. They have rotating unique bread, like japanese milk bread, flavored sourdough and some other unique loafs. They also sell their excess bread on a discount the next day and its still fresh. Their drinks are reliable, and most recently tried their eggnog latte and was a big fan of it. I started using their sourdough starter they sell recently and it came out great. The staff is also really friendly and provide helpful guidance to the goods they sell. It's a nice place to work out of to but just a warning there is not plugs to charge your laptops (that i could find). Also these pictures are older but they have been so consistent over the past 2 years, I love this place. Phlour is for the community and you should come support it!

I just moved into the neighborhood and have walked by this place several times. In decided to try it out. Well, I love it. Here are my pros amd cons: Pros - Its a local business - Quite - Great selection of pastries, sandwiches and bread (food was DELICIOUS) - They have wifi - Plenty of room to do my work when I want to get out of my house - Everything is made in house Con - Customer service. I didn't go there to get red carpet service, however I did expect a simple hello. Unfortunately, I felt like I was bothering the girl behind the counter. I walked up, said hello, and all I got was a stare. I mentioned that I have never been there before, in the hopes that she would make a suggestion. Not a peep. I asked her about the blend of coffee of the day. She literally said...."Its the coffee of the day". - Long story short, she didn't want to be there, didn't care about customer flow. Almost everyone that came in had to wait for her to stop talking to the back of house bakers. Almost never smiled. Its to bad that she wasn't taking her job serious. That place if great and I recommend going there. My hope is that the owner reeducates the employee on how important it is to simply say "welcome" or "hello". Many small businesses are closing down in this neighborhood. Customer service one of the easiest ways to get people to come back.

Phlour serves up fresh and aromatic breads, pastries, and more in a modern spot for remote working and casual meets. I have lived in the Edgewater area for a couple years and always loved Phlour's quippy neon signs, but hadn't stopped in until now. I stopped in on a Friday morning and ordered a mini broccoli and cheese quiche to-go. The quiches are refrigerated, but there is the option to heat it, which takes around 10 minutes. It was well worth the wait. Five minutes in, the delicious smell of the warming quiche filled the entire shop. When I took it home it was still warm. The quiche was one of the most delicious I've ever had. Flaky, buttery crust, flavorful eggs, fresh broccoli and cheese - I can't stress enough how much I LOVED this quiche. It was perfect for a one-person breakfast. The expected COVID precautions are in place, social distancing, and masks, which I appreciate. I will be back to try their sandwiches, and I can't wait!

Went there this morning to get breakfast. My favorites are the blueberry muffin, cinnamon roll, and quiche. I order a broccoli and cheddar cheese quiche, blueberry muffin, and iced coffee. I asked for an iced americano and the barista (who is cute and friendly) told me that they don't make espresso drinks, so he suggested an iced coffee which I did. Of course, the quiche and blueberry muffin was tasty. If you get a chance stop by here and give it a try.

I ordered the Iced Tuxedo Mocha (which was over $7.00) and there was no real coffee flavor while the chocolate tasted cheap. For food I tried the Raspberry Danish and it tasted store bought, which would have been okay if it wasn't $4.25. They also served it on a paper plate which was interesting for a cafe. They did bring it to my table and the staff was friendly when ordering. It was also nice that while she was walking by she took the empty plate later. Overall the food/drink was just okay and it was pricey for a "just okay" experience. The WiFi password is also super long: MoreThanJustCoffee1070!!!

We were looking for a nice, sit-down cafe and there are a decent number of tables but almost all of them were occupied so seating was limited and it was hard to really settle in comfortably. The drinks were fine (although a bit pricey) and they did take a while to come out (it was crowded but most of the people already had their drinks). There was also a slight mix up where one of the drinks was missed which was eventually resolved, but again, added to the overall wait and slightly disorganized feel of the visit. Nothing was really bad, but nothing stood out either. It just felt a bit overwhelmed by the volume of people compared to the space and speed of service. Decent drinks and nice decor but long wait times and limited seating made the experience less enjoyable than it could've been.

We were lucky to grab the last small round table for two.  The pastry case was only 40% stocked at this point. We were happy that they still had our favorites -- 2 almond croissants ($14 for 2) and a cappuccino ($5 + $0.50 Oat Milk) to go.  The cashier was very friendly, patient, and welcoming. The decor of the store is modern and charming.  There were a variety of seating options, and many customers were working on their laptops while enjoying their drinks, giving the café a cozy yet lively atmosphere. The bookstore occupies about half of the space and features an impressive collection of books focused on drama and theatre.  If you are interested in theatre, this thoughtfully curated bookstore is for you. We noticed a sign indicating that The Understudy partners with Defloured Bakery, which also partners with a long list of businesses, including another coffee shop in the neighborhood that we frequent a lot. We have enjoyed almond croissants and other baked goods at that café very often, they were just as delicious and large, since they were sourced from the same bakery. However, The Understudy charged $7 for an almond croissant, while the other café charged only $4.50 for the exact same pastry. That's a significant price difference. The cappuccino was another slight disappointment. It was only lukewarm rather than hot, although I am not sure whether the oat milk substitution may have affected the temperature. Judging by how popular The Understudy was during our visit, it's clear that many people appreciate its ambiance, curated bookstore, and friendly service. If those qualities are important to you, you may find the higher prices well worth it.

The only prices they have on their menu are for the THC additions. I've mentioned this to the owner twice (he's a cool guy) but he has always sort of shrugged it off. It bothers me every time I'm in. Sometimes my latte with oat milk comes out different prices. Price transparency is so important for consistency . Not including the prices is a bit elitist, especially when the average drink is $6-$8. You should want folks to come in and comfortably order what they can afford. I hope this suggestion is taken into consideration. The drinks are good and like I said, I keep coming back but this has been a sticking point for me for a year plus.
