Cute french inspired cafe on Bryn Mawr 1/2 a block east of broadway. I got an americano and a plain croissant. The Americano was smooth and bold and the croissant was everything they are supposed to be -fluffy, melt in your mouth buttery salvation that crumbles ever so delicately when you pull it apart. What makes this place great is that all the bread and baked good are make on site which means everything is extremely fresh. The menu also has sandwiches and salads, all of which sounded absolutely delightful. They had meat, veggie, vegan and pescatarian options. The cafe itself is a great place to work. There is WiFi and lots of tables. The decor is beautiful and there are nice paintings and photos on the wall and the bathroom is gorgeous. It made me really happy. The front of the cafe has a huge window that covers the entire front of the cafe so a lot of natural light comes it. I would definitely recommend and I'll absolutely be back to try a sandwich. read more

We happened upon this bakery during a walk. Everything behind their counter looked delicious, and there were several options. We settled on a grilled cheese and then an almond croissant for dessert. The grilled cheese was no ordinary grilled cheese, so full of flavor! Absolutely delicious. The Almond croissant was also exceptional, which leads me to believe any choice there is a good choice. Not impressive. The space is cool, but I don't know why they call themselves a "bakery." The display case only had two cookies, a few croissants, and ONE cinnamon roll.... on a Saturday! So so so good. From the beautiful space to the exceptional pastries, Phlour does everything really really well. Having moved to the neighborhood recently, I was on the hunt for somewhere to enjoy a decent cup of coffee. Phlour gave me just that and so much more - I have tried the Croque Madame, Grilled Cheese, and a variety of their pastries and they were all amazing. They took care of me! Going to a pasta dinner, I knew I needed good bread to bring. The garlic loaf, sourdough, whole grain, and baguette were all exceptional. Friendly service, too! For my tastes, the croissant and the demi baguette were a bit underwhelming but my expectations were very high. The croissant and baguette were good but I expected to be "wowed". For sandwiches I think both would be fine. I just like my bread to stand out on its own rather then as a vehicle for meat, cheese and condiments. read more

Holy pecan roll. I just moved to the area so I've been trying to go to a different coffee shop every weekend. This morning I went to Phlour and I was not disappointed. The latte was good but the pecan roll was better! The gentleman working this morning told me they only make the rolls on the weekend so I was in luck. If I could eat 2 of them I would! First, these folks KNOW their way around some bread. Everything here is magic, especially the sandwiches. (And the chocolate croissant) The place is really lovely inside- it's hard to even imagine this was Lovely Too which had a really really deeply dingy charm (and I did love that place, but it wasn't a spot where I wanted to linger). So yay all around, and nice to have two new bakeries in the neighborhood (see also Edge of Sweetness). I should note, though, phlour does still have some kinks that need to be ironed out - all small things. The biggest is that the service is SUPER slow - we were there on a weekend and there was a consistent flow of folks coming in. There was one person working the cash register and she was the same person who was making coffee drinks, so after every order, she'd have to stop and make an elaborate drink. This meant we waited about 10 minutes just to place an order. It also felt like they were understaffed on food production because we waited about another 10-15 minutes for a sandwich. That's not a lethal wait, but it's longer than you'd expect in a cafe. And then a few small suggestions- why not put out some water and glasses so folks can drink at their leisure? (Right now you have to ask for a glass and the poor cashier already seems beleaguered...) read more

I stopped at Phlour bakery this morning after my morning jog to get my wife and I each a scone and also a loaf of multigrain bread. This place is a good addition to the neighborhood. The service is always good and there place is quite full with guests when I am there to. This place does offer sandwiches also which I have never tried yet will have to someday. read more

I am not even supposed to eat gluten, but our dinner plans fell through and to be honest, I needed to use the bathroom. So we stumbled in and I am at level 10 grumpy/hungry. The dude gets coffee and talks about how good it is while I'm pouring over yelp reviews looking for a Hail Mary restaurant within in walking distance on this cold Fall night. I'm coming up with nothing and then I'm like fuck it, I'm gonna just eat something here. Holy shit, they aren't fucking around here. Got the focaccia bread and it was beyond delicious. Very cozy place with coffee and pastries but also lunch fare incl sandwiches and soups. May seem a bit pricey but you get way more for your money than a place like Intelligentsia, so it definitely feels worth it. Highly recommend the amazingly delicious croque madame which comes with a light salad to balance out the richness of the sandwich. read more

Yummy! I don't recall having a sandwich that good. Had the mcgreen, an awesome take on a veggie sandwich. The freshly made bread was outstanding. Crispy crust, chewy center, and a slightly sour freshness. The avocado, green goddess mayo, cheese, and various veggies made it perfect. On two other occasions, I've gotten their pastries. One time I had the cinnamon scone and the other time it was the blood orange scone. Both superb. This bakery is the finest iteration of the several bakeries that have been located here. They are also friendly and helpful to boot. Our new go to place for delicious baked goods. Yay for them, and yay for me. read more

Fantastic neighborhood bakery, the pastries and bread are all in-house and absolutely delicious. We bought a loaf of the phlour bread (it's like a whole wheat sourdough) and it was a hit at our party that night. The space is super cute too, if I was in school I would definitely be spending tons of time there. What's really spurring this review is my experience tonight. I work night shift, and stopped in on my way to work for a quality sandwich. I walked in only to be told they closed at 5. I must have had a super sad face because the guy offered to make me a sanddwich to go anyway! It was so very nice of him, and I could tell that he was busy and kind of stressed, but he still took the time to make this night shift nurse very happy. Thank you! read more

My husband and I got bacon and egg breakfast sandwiches. The board inside the cafe didn't say it came with cheese but, when we came home, we realized there was cheese on it. I am giving this place a three in the name of generosity (since we've only purchased items once), but I wouldn't really recommend for someone who wanted baked goods or a cup of coffee conceptually, I really like this place: it bills itself as no muss, not fuss delicious traditionally baked goods, with a beautifully decorated space. Based on my experience they deliver on the later, but not the former. I went with my husband yesterday and we ordered a vanilla latte and an almond croissant, this cost almost $10. We are foodies so we don't mind spending large amounts for quality products, but both of these items missed the mark. For the latte, they used the shittiest milk available in the Chicago market (prairie farms...and not the organic kind), they also use metropolis coffee but something about the technique seemed off. At some places you have lattes where you feel the person who made you drink does it as an art...this is not what happened during our visit. It was fine, but we wouldn't come back for this. The almond croissant had more issues. the croissant tasted like a grocery store croissant (the type you find at Jewel), they cut this monstrosity in half and spread what I imagine was store bought marzipan inside put the top back on, brushed on a little bit simple syrup, sprinkled on almonds and then a generous helping on powdered sugar. The marzipan was the only delicious part of this and this entire technique is ridiculous. I mean, they could have at least piped the marzipan in so buyers could pretend they baked it. read more

Wow, I've never given feedback and had an owner take it so seriously. Melissa reached out to me via direct message to say that they heard the feedback and were implementing a system to change their ticketing so orders weren't getting lost. Because of her message, we went back today to give Phlour another shot. Melissa recognized me and came over to chat. She explained how much good customer service means to her, and you could see that changes were already being made. Our food came out fast and she even brought over a few desserts when we were done (chocolate cake and an oatmeal cream pie- both delicious!). The coffee and food were really good as always. Yum. I'm actually sitting in Phlour right now, smelling something delicious and chocolatey baking while I write this. I'm a big fan of this spot for its chill vibe, beautiful architecture, yummy pastries, and kind staff. My husband and I only planned to spend a few hours here this morning, but after the fantastic croque madame and almond croissants, we will probably grab some lunch as well. The music selection is pretty perfect for getting work done, too! Highly recommend! read more

We stopped here for breakfast on the way to the lake for a short hike. Had the egg and bacon croissants and picked up pretzels fresh from the oven and chocolate chip cookies decorated for St. Patrick's Day for our snacks later today. I wandered into this coffee shop as I was about to enter the Bryn Mawr stop, not expecting to stick around for too long -- but the weather was perfect and they had outdoor seating so I bought an iced coffee and read outside for a while. The coffee was actually wonderful and I didn't buy any pastries but a lot of people around me were eating them. Boss lady makes really good quiche!!! Or this flakiest crust is made by the genius baker in the kitchen. At any rate, best warm $6ish ham and cheese quiche. Heavy as a pound well of substance. Although didn't know what cheese it is, it's tasty. Will come back for a dozen! It's good to finally get some good pastry eat. (Especially after a bad mocha incident this morning at the cafe.) I'm a regular at Phlour and I have to say that the more I go the more I enjoy it. The Almond Croissant has really grown on me but more recently I have been getting the Raisin Roll (Pain Au Raisin). I also love hearing the bakers working in the background because it's very relaxing. Sometimes you have to wait a little while for your food if you're getting more than just a pastry. But the baristas are very kind. I am mostly blind and the barista Jake(?) always guides me to a table and asks me how my day is going. read more

Im really hoping this place gets better since it just reopened after buying out Lovely Too. I've been in here a handful of times for coffee and/or pastry and it is just no good. The vanilla latte tasted like a lot of milk with a hint of espresso and chemical vanilla. The almond croissant was very dry, and instead of being pastry wrapped around an almond filling, it was a regular croissant cut in half with some almond spread inside. Lovely Too had friendly, welcoming staff (not Starbucks friendly, actually friendly). pHlour staff seem nervous and undertrained. I waited a full 10minutes for a latte, to go. Lovely Too's counter was filled with beautiful cakes, macarons, and tarts. pHlour has three sad little tarts, and a shelf of dry looking croissant. The interior is cute, but if you're drawn by the promise of good coffee and pastry, don't waste your time. read more
