We were recommended this place by so many people, from friends who have visited Vancouver to friends from the area and I finally understand why!! This place was far more than what I expected. We came around 7:30 pm on a Friday night and we were initial told that there were no more tables available for the night. We went back in to order takeout instead but the wait for takeout was also going to be 45 min- an hour and then someone dropped from the waitlist so we got on and were told it was going to be about an hour wait. We got seated at almost closing so it was closer to a 1.5 hr wait. The food was so delicious and fresh I'd wait again!! We got: Butter beef: the beef was so tender and the marinade was so juicy and flavorful. A really good appetizer to start off our meal. Bo luc lac: we subbed the rice for the fried rice and it was so yummy. The beef was well flavored as well but it was definitely different than the normal Vietnamese bo luc lac I'm used to. Phnom Penh dry rice noodles: this dish was good but I felt that it lacked some flavor. we actually used the sauce of the butter beef and it helped add flavor to the noodles. Phnom Penh chicken wings: some of the best chicken wing I've ever had! so juicy and crispy and perfectly seasoned! came with a lime sauce that elevated it even more. My first time being at Vancouver and I saw that this place was recommended for must-trys. Owner of the restaurant saw that we didn't know how to eat the butter beef and decided to show and help us. If you come here, you must try the fried chicken and the butter beef with no doubt. Make sure you go early before they open or else there will be a long line and long wait. They only take reservations for big table (6+ people). If not, anyone with small party will have to wait in line to be seated. Visited in August 2023 while on vacation in Vancouver. Went midday on a weekday and waited probably 30 minutes for a table for myself. The restaurant was filled with a lot of families, and 4+ seat tables, so the place would be great for large groups. Phenomenal chicken wings, probably the best Vietnamese fried chicken I've ever had. Super crisp and light, just the right amount of salt and fat, and the sour dipping sauce was a nice touch (not necessary, the chicken wings already speak for themselves). The butter beef was also delicious, the sauce a tad sour, but it did well in cutting through the pure meatiness of the raw beef. At the time of writing this, this restaurant is definitely in my all time top 5. I think about the food sometimes and would definitely come back to Vancouver to eat it again! read more

Phnom Penh was on my list of places to eat in Vancouver and I'm so happy I finally got to try it. The portions are pretty large and it's not crazy expensive. The service is friendly and efficient and the only thing I can really say that's negative is that I wish I came with more people so I could try more dishes. We came on a Sunday night at about 6:30. They said the wait would be an hour, but that they'd text me. Awesome. We walked down to the bar down the street to wait for our table. In almost exactly an hour, they texted us saying our table was ready and we walked back over. I kind of wish the menu had pictures or maybe just more description. But I looked through Yelp photos and read reviews and chose the items people on Yelp liked. We got a small order of chicken wings, the Cambodian soup with rice noodles, the butter beef and the luc lac beef with rice. It was a lot of food. We took some leftovers home. The fried chicken wings were delicious. They put sugar and other seasonings so it's crispy and so delicious, but it also comes with this lemon juice/ pepper sauce that just takes this over the top. I'd come back for these. The soup noodles were good, like absolutely nothing wrong with them, but just a little on the boring side.... There's just so many other amazing things to try. I wanted to get a soup though because it was cold outside and I thought something to warm us up was necessary. The butter beef was kind of like a raw beef salad without the salad. The seasonings were really good. It's pretty sour, but I liked it. It just grossed me out a tiny bit to eat so much raw beef, but I think I'd get this again especially if I was sharing with a bunch of other people. The luc lac beef came with rice, some lettuce, a slice of tomato, two slices of cucumber and a bowl of broth. In hindsight, if I knew the beef dish was coming with a side of broth, I wouldn't have ordered the soup noodles, but it was fine, the noodles were good too. The beef was seasoned well, nothing bad to say about this dish. I think it would be better with a better cut of beef because the beef they use is like thin cut. Next time I'd want to try a seafood dish, possibly other noodles and possibly the papaya salad. The service was friendly and fast. Our first family vacation dinner in Vancouver as a group of 7 did not disappoint! We came famished on a Saturday night after a long day of hiking and sight-seeing; really glad we were able to call a week or so before and make a reservation for our 6+ person group at 7:30PM, because the place was packed and there were definitely people waiting to get in when we arrived. We got to the restaurant a little early so the staff set up our table quickly and called us inside right around 7:30. We'd done some research on this place, so we ended up ordering two bo luc lac (shaking beef), the butter beef (with the cilantro on the side, since I don't like cilantro), canh chua ca per my FIL's request (Vietnamese-style sweet and sour fish soup), black pepper squid, stir-fried rice cake, oyster pancake, and a large chicken wings for everyone to share. We were all too hungry to take pictures of anything past the first few dishes, so apologies for the half-eaten plates :P The chicken wings were an unanimous favorite, but I also really enjoyed the garlicky flavor of the butter beef and the tender sauciness of the luc lac. My husband didn't love the short rib-y texture of the meat used in the shaking beef (he's more used to cubed steak in that dish), but most of the others at the table loved it too. The pepper squid was also excellent and went great with the rice we got with the luc lac, and most people at the table also really enjoyed the rice cakes. The oyster pancake wasn't bad but I think we prefer the Taiwanese version :) The Vietnamese version of the fish soup was also very unique for us, and most seemed to enjoy it - there was a bunch of cilantro inside this dish so I didn't end up trying it. Staff was a little slow to bring water but totally understand since it was a Saturday night and they were pretty slammed. They were very attentive to the dietary restrictions at the table; we had two who are allergic to nuts. When we got the bill, we didn't love that they defaulted to us paying in USD instead of CAD (we all have fee-free credit cards, but we were not asked before the transaction was sent through in USD instead, so make sure to let them know if that's also the case for you). Went there on a rainy day so there were less people there. Did have to wait about 15 mins before getting seated. It reminds me of neighborhood establishments back in NY where Chinese groups would gather for big celebratory meals. Like others have said, this is not going to be anywhere on the level of Long Beach nor Orange County. And also this restaurant doesn't really have Cambodian food. The latter is my top reason for this review. But this restaurant has non-stop takeout and walk-ins, so it is extremely popular regardless. We ordered 3 dishes: the butter beef, fried chicken wings, and a dry noodle. The butter beef and dry noodles were actually okay but the chicken wings were served last and by that time the saltiness of the first two dishes were already too much that we couldn't finish the even saltier wings. Very unique dishes at Phnom Penh! The Butter Beef is thinly sliced raw beef with an absolutely fire herb sauce/dressing. The beef was very fresh which made eating raw beef for the first time very palatable. The dry rice noodles were very comforting with the hot side soup yet also felt very fresh with the herbs and bean sprouts. And the garlic chicken wings served with lemon pepper sauce were to die for. The crisp and light starch coating on the chicken was laden with garlic and paired well with the sauce. Service was good, and the dining area felt clean. It was so crackling crispy and so juicy inside.. that lemon butter salt & pepper sauce on the side complimented the chicken so well even though the chicken was deep fat fken fried. We arrived at 10:45 and there was a massive line up already. We didn't get in on the first sitting so had to wait 50 min for the people to finish . Prices have increased a lot in the past few years and service has gone down . We ordered two Vietnamese spring rolls and they put it on 1 plate. Had to ask them to separate them. The hype is real: this place got a Michelin gourmand for a reason. I highly recommend getting in line 10-15 minutes prior to opening for lunch to get a seat inside or simply order pickup. Nestled on a street in Chinatown is some of the best food! We ordered the chicken wings, beef luc lac and marinated butter beef. We arrived at 10:45am and there was already a small line outside. The inside has plenty of seating so if you arrive before opening you should be able to get a table. And I ordered Filet Beef Luc Lac on Rice with Egg, Famous Deep Fried Chicken Wings and Spicy Basil Clams. We came for lunch and ordered the butter beef, beef luc lac, and their famous chicken wings. A disclaimer for the butter beef: make sure you have at least 4+ people to share this with as the plate is quite big and it gets to be a little too much after a while (at least for me), unless of course you really love butter beef. While waiting, we had time to look through the extensive menu. Once seated, we placed our order. We got the deep fried chicken wings, beef stew rice noodle soup, fish ball rice noodle soup and stir fried rice cake. The chicken wings are one of the best we've had. Hubby enjoyed the beef stew and we both liked the rice cakes. The fish ball noodle soup was huge! I barely made a dent after eating two small bowls. My least favorite was the fish ball noodle soup. It was pretty bland and didn't hit the spot for me. The restaurant is pretty big and seats a sizable number of people. We ordered way too much food for two people so packed the rest of the wings and rice cakes to take back to the hotel. phnom penh was really delicious and still deserving of 5 stars, but i do think it was a bit too hyped up in my opinion. all of the food was solid, but the chicken wings were absolutely mindblowing. the light crunchy breading paired with the lemony, salty sweet seasoning and the vinegar-y sauce was a symphony of amazing flavors. the chicken wings are a must-order item! besides the chicken wings, the shrimp salad roll was also very solid! the luc lac beef and dry noodles were decent but not as extraordinary as the chicken wings. in fact, i felt that the noodles should have had more flavor and i felt that the dish lacked a little depth. service is standard, and the restaurant is small but accommodates a decent amount of people. if you don't want to wait to dine in, i would suggest arriving prior to opening so you can join the queue to sit down right when they open. overall, i would come back to try other dishes and i would recommend phnom penh if you're in vancouver! read more

Usually a line up with a minimum 15-30 minute wait regardless the time of the day. Parking is of course, horrible in this area. Although paid parkades are nearby. The food was nice and fresh. Ordered the staples from them and nothing bad to say about it. Flavour is good but imo nothing really stands out as a wow or something that would warrant another visit. Came at 4 on a Wednesday afternoon and only had to wait about 30min for a table for two. We had the Phnom Penh chicken wings and Beef Noodle Soup. The pho was good because it wasn't salty - usually broth can get too salty but this one was perfect. There were three types of beef in the soup and all were good; my personal favourite were the meat balls. We got a small of the chicken wings (small = 7 wings, large = 14) and these were the showstopper. They're so crispy and they have a really yummy lemon and pepper sauce on them. We ate every last wing. The service is also super efficient and friendly. I definitely see why people recommend this spot when visiting Vancouver! I'd come back for the wings alone. read more
