Mum Ngo Gai is on Kingsway by Victoria and there is plenty of free street parking in and around the area. Ordered the lunch special and the server advised that their weekday lunch promotions are only on until the end of May...good to know. This was my first experience drinking the grass jelly drink...it was light and refreshing. The spring roll was as expected...nice presentation and taste. And the bowl of pho was very large with sliced beef and beef balls. I liked the broth but was not a fan of the noodles...too thick for me. It's been years since we've been to Mui Ngo Gai for a meal. Went on a weekend to check out their set lunches for 2 ($19.50). Can't beat the price. Our group shared Set B (kimchi fried rice + bak kut teh) and Set C (special beef + crab tomato noodle soup). Spring rolls were decent, set came with cups of root beer. Bak kut teh was the best dish; flavourful but not herbaceous. Fried rice had good wok hei but barely any kimchi. Despite that the service was fine - more like busy Vietnamese restaurant service, they do stop by enough. Sorry promotion was only for last week. It's a good deal but at the original price - lunch for 2 for $40 - not worth it. We ordered set B and D. The good- - the Bak kuh teh was pretty good. I had not had the "mufan" before and it is like soupy rice is the best way to describe it. I really like it actually. The soupy hokkien mee was pretty good as well. Now the bad - they only had set lunches, you could not order anything else. Each lunch comes with two cokes, no substitutions. I hate sofa. After hearing about the $19.50 for two lunch special, my friend and I gave it a try! The set we got came with beef pho, tomato crab noodle and two spring rolls which was very filling. Unfortunately, service was slow and it was hard to flag someone down. The spring rolls were pretty tasty however the soups were not very flavourful. From the outside exterior, the inside is very unassuming and and elegant. It definitely gets cold inside, so bring layers as there is no heat. The crab tomato soup was really flavourful and comforting. The tamarind fried fish was an interesting dish but felt a bit overcooked. The peach lemongrass drink was delicious but took awhile to make. Pork belly was good over rice otherwise not my favourite dish and felt very salt heavy. They are known for their crab dishes but my guest didn't feel like it for dinner so I will have to come back another time to try. It can get busy so reservations are needed if you're in a big group or want to ensure a spot. Staff are ok but definitely didn't feel warm or friendly. Recently saw a limited time promotion for buy one get one free pho and duck bamboo noodle soup and opted to try out Mui Ngo Gai for lunch! Their promotion was for their lunch hour launch which was recently released. I had the duck bamboo noodle soup. The flavour of the soup was fragrant and warning. The noodle soup is a little different from your typical pho. There are no bean sprouts but had thinly sliced cabbages and bamboo shoots as vegetable alternatives within the soup. It was a nice change! There was a generous amount of duck - at least 6 pieces in my bowl includes a drumstick too. Overall, the meat was good, but only the drumstick was on the chewier side. The restaurant itself felt more like a tea house than your regular vietnamese restaurant. It was beautifuly decorated with floral paintings on the wall and has velvet chairs. The host was very friendly and regularly checked up on us. She was very passionate about the restaurant as she inform us they offer Singapore food at night too and recommended us to visit for dinner next time! read more

Was here for a media event. The food has been the same but it seems like they fixed the pho bowl problem. Under new ownership, there has been a big change to the restaurant especially the ambiance and environment. I was ignored once when I wanted to ask a question by one of the female waitresses but I think they were busy rushing out stuff. This restaurant by name has been around forever, but ownership changed one year ago and the restaurant has been revamped. It's been renovated and reminds you of almost a tea house vibe, and the waitresses are dressed like stewardesses. They are also no longer just a Vietnamese restaurant, but also serve Singaporean food. This is a combo I've never heard of, but as I love Singaporean food we had to check it out. We ordered many many many items off the menu from the Vietnamese and Singaporean side. The lunch and dinner menus are different, and there's no pho during dinner. The best items from the Vietnamese portion of the menu were probably the chicken wings and spring rolls, which were both fried well and tasty. Each spring rolls also includes an entire shrimp. The only item we enjoyed from the Singaporean menu was the seafood hor fun. Everything else was very mediocre, overly salty, and not authentic Singaporean food. Stay away from the pork belly which was not pork belly but like chopped pieces of pork which were soooo salty and not much other flavour, the sambal fried rice was flavourless, the chili crab ($130 for one) hit the table and the colour was off as it was not tomatoey and just overwhelmingly spicy even though we had asked for mild spice and we had some people who couldn't eat spicy. They also had a bunch of items on the menu that were not available for us to order like frog and laksa. Overall we all found it overpriced, unauthentic, and we would not be back. We came here to utilize the birthday promotion they have from June to August 2024. You get discount based on your age, pretty good deal If you know older people. You do have to make a reservation 3 days in advance for this promotion. They have a limited menu for the birthday promotion. 1 page of Vietnamese dishes and 1 page for Singapore dishes. We decided to try the items from the Singapore menu. The staff told us they have 2 chefs and each of them specializes in each cuisine. The one cooking Singapore dishes worked in Singapore for 10 years. The Singapore dishes here are not the usual things you find in the other Singapore restaurants. You won't find laksa or chicken rice here. Instead you will get chili crab, also considered a National dish in Singapore. Many sambal dishes eg sambal kang kong, lady's fingers (okra), prawns, sotong (squid) etc. They even serve frog leg porridge, fish head curry and or luak (French oyster egg in menu). We had the tiger prawn in chili crab sauce with the fried mantous. The mantous could be fried further to get the crispiness. The chili crab sauce is pretty spot on. The seafood hor fun had the wok hei charred aroma and taste which was very legit. Ask for the green chilies (typically served in Singapore) to complete the experience. The sambal okra was also authentic. We ordered a bowl of rice to go with it. I loved the presentation of it. It came in a beautiful ceramic covered bowl and was more than enough to feed 2-3 people (small portion). The place was done up very nicely and reminded me of Saigon or an old world French decor. Not overly opulent with the chandeliers and velveteen cushioned chairs. Service could be faster but it was just one server on duty when we were there for lunch on a weekday. Tried this place again after many years and it was ok. They recently added a lunchtime special for $20 for 2 people but I was quite disappointed. I saw instagram reels from food influencers. What they got was definitely not what was served. We ordered set A which was not a good deal because they took the naan off the menu. $20 for a small bowl of curry with rice and bak choy was not a good deal. The free spring roll was cold and soggy and the pop was flat. The bak choy was way overcooked. Many people ordered the 2 bowls of pho which was a better deal for $20. Not sure I will come back to try the other specials. It was busy but service was slow and inefficient . No one was really raving about the taste. We shared a table with 2 other couples and no one thought it was great. It was a $10 meal per person that could have been better. Upon entering, the place looked decorated and clean! My friend and I came for their "Set Lunches for 2" special and paid ~$24 in total for a crab tomato noodle soup, 2 spring rolls, AND a pho. We were shocked when the bowl of pho came out because we were already full from the crab tomato noodles. The pho also came with a lot of meat! The portions for the lunch set were huge and the presentation was really nice. We saw another table get a pineapple fried rice that was served out of a real pineapple which was very impressive. However, while the portions were big, the taste and flavour of the food was lacking. The broths for both noodle were a bit watery, and I would be disappointed if I had paid full price for the items. During the first half of our dining, there was only one staff serving the entire floor and she did not get any rest at all! Luckily, more staff showed up later, but the wait to order and to get the bill was quite long (understandably). Overall, I think the lunch deal is worth taking advantage of and the restaurant is cute, but don't set your expectations too high for the food! Three months young, this restaurant will surely make a hit in the Vancouver food scene. We tried after seeing several IG posts and it did not disappoint. Never thought of the Singaporean and Vietnamese combo. We started off with the spring roll and fried wings and they were both amazing. Spring rolls had a shrimp in each and wings were well marinated. I tried it without the dipping sauce and it was delicious by itself. Singaporean Chili Crab was sooooo tasty. The sauce is incredible and a perfect dip with the complimentary bread. It was so good we had to order a second one. We ordered two kinds of fish - Ca Kho To and Pompano - and they were both a welcome among the young ones in our group. We finished off with Mee Goreng and who doesn't love this dish! We were served tea and it was a nice ending to a good meal. Ambiance is a bit "elegant-wannabe" with too much florals on walls and dining tables but that's not the focus here. Servers are very friendly and special mention to Rachel, the manager. I took advantage of their discount your age deal for summer birthdays and it was the best decision ever. This place expands the viet and sg food repertoire for Vancouver. There are too many pho restaurants and hawker style restaurants and it's nice to try other dishes. Banh bot loc ($15) - I love eating this type of dish but not a lot of places serve it. The dumplings here were quite tiny but the sauce was delicious. Tanghoon crab meat ($27) - quite a bit of crab meat here so that's good. The dish was quite flavorless though. I wouldn't order this again. Tiger prawns in chili crab sauce ($38) - Came with 8 big prawns in a giant bowl of sauce. Sauce was delicious and I got to take home a whole bowl of sauce to continue my feast at home! This was one dish I didn't get to try when I visited Singapore. Fried tilapia with tamarind sauce ($32) - probably my fav dish of this set. The fish was fried really well that everything was crispy. Tilapia doesn't have a lot of side bones so it's easy to eat. One thing I would recommend is that they leave the fins and tail on instead of cutting them off because those are the crunchiest parts. The sauce was delicious but I didn't taste too much tamarind. I would return for this dish. The service is good and I really like the servers attire. They refilled water and cleared plates regularly. The dishes came out quickly. The interior is beautiful. I am not sure whether the prices are sustainable for the customers. I saw the crabs and lobsters were $145/kg or $66/lb which is outstanding compared to anywhere else. The bun bo hue is $24 which is really expensive as well. I think I would like them to expand their menu to provide unique flavors like butter prawn and sambal stingray, and get rid of the dishes that many other restaurants provide already. read more

I heard this restaurant was newly renovated, and this place is one of my must-go destinations. Finally, I made it here to visit. The interior was simply amazing. I loved the tables, chairs, couches, and wall decor, creating a perfect blend of Asian and European fusion ambiance. What we ordered: Steamed Pork and Shrimp tapioca dampring - The tapioca texture was wonderfully soft and chewy, simply amazing! I enjoyed the dipping sauce that accompanied them. Each dumpling was beautifully wrapped in banana leaves, revealing the transparent colors of pork and shrimp tapioca dumplings. Their appearance was also beautiful. Mui Ngo Gai special rice -The dish consisted of grilled pork and chicken served with a sunny-side-up egg on top of rice. It was a typical Vietnamese rice dish. The flavor was robust and tasty, although it was just okay Frog Porridge -One of the best dishes of the night was the frog legs cooked in their special sauce. We poured the sauce-covered frog legs over porridge. The sauce was exceptionally delicious. I highly recommend trying this dish. Tek Tarik The Sri Lankan-style pullover tea is a must-order item. It's made with black tea and evaporated milk, resulting in a lightly sweet flavor. I was amazed by the tea's flavor and texture. I definitely recommend trying it. Overall, I am satisfied with their food and ambiance. The only disappointment was that they were not yet ready to take dessert orders. This was our go to place for fast, cheap, delicious Vietnamese food before they changed owners and renovated. I knew the prices were going to go up after a renovation, but the prices are ridiculous now. The moment we saw the menu we wanted to get up and leave, but I decided to give them a chance. The ambiance was nice. The chairs were comfy. The service was good and attentive. Now the food.. Spring rolls $15. We used to absolutely love the spring rolls at the old MNG. $4.50 for 2 and we're double the size. These still tasted good and had a decent size prawn inside. MNG special rice $25. Not bad. Although I can't justify paying that much. I would say the flavour was good and the meat was tender. Average Vietnamese BBQ rice, but almost double the price. Bun bo hue $24. The biggest disappointment of the evening. Soup was bland and lacked any flavour it has a little spice but that's it. The noodles were so soggy and soft. We normally get salted lime juice when we go out, but couldn't justify paying $9.50 for it. We love our flavourful, reasonably priced Vietnamese food, and this wasn't it. On social media, I noticed they had a Your Age Your Discount special during the summer where anyone who had a birthday in June/July/August, would get a percentage discount equal to their age for the entire bill. So if a person was turning 40, the bill would be 40% off with a few exceptions stated in ad. I thought to myself, at that type of discount, why not try it? As per the ad terms, I called in to make advanced reservations. Because I was making a weekend booking, they would have to reduce the discount by 10%. That restriction wasn't listed on the ad, but since I had the choice of not making the reservation, it didn't bother me as the discount was still good in my mind. First item to clarify - they have two websites. The ".ca" one is the first one that shows up on Google, and it the out-of-date one. When I looked at that menu online, it's seems like a typical Vietnamese restaurant. It's not until I looked back on Google, their updated ".com" website is the current restaurant and menu (both Vietnamese and Singaporean dishes). Because I only saw the first website, I was surprised to see how incredibly ornate this place was. I was actually really impressed with how nice it looked inside, and the staff looked really professional in their uniforms. We ordered drinks first. Being the first table to sit down, I didn't expect our 4 drinks to take 15+ minutes to prepare. I'm not sure why they didn't try to take our food order during that time. We eventually ordered and tried the following: - Caramelized Pork Belly and Tofu Hot Pot - Poor. Just too salty. The word "caramelized" was lost on me when I ate this dish. - Stir Fried Water Spinach With Garlic - OK. Quite small. Also salty. - Sambal Abalone With Butterfly Pea Sticky Rice - OK. It was pretty to look. But found the rice a bit mushy. How this can even be a single serving for one person, I'm not sure, as it was very small. Even harder to share. - Authentic Singapore Chilli Crab - Poor. This is the one you see on social media. It looked so good, but it isn't. The sauce tasted very one-dimensional in that it had some heat, but nothing else. Not sweet, not salty, not sour, no umami. I can't remember when I was so underwhelmed by a dish. - Crispy Fried Chicken Wings - Good. Comes with 4 wingettes and 4 drumettes. Fried nicely. Probably the best dish of the night. - Fried Kway Teow - OK. Not a lot of flavour. Dish was quite small. Service looked so promising in their black uniforms that I would see in higher-end establishments. But they were slow to start, and as the meal progressed, they were less and less attentive. After getting the bill, I was surprised at how much it all cost after the "discount" and how little food we actually got. Based on this visit, I have to give it 1 out of 5, because there so many things that disappointed me. 1) The food. It was just generally sub-average. 2) The cost. The prices are inflated. If I was paying full price, I would be outraged. Even with the discount, it felt overpriced. 3) The service was slow to start and got progressively worse through the meal. Walked in to a space with nice decor and jaw dropping prices. I think they are trying to go for a higher end atmosphere. Food was good but not worth the steep price. The chilli crab had good flavour (somehow the staff already knew it was 2.6 lbs without measuring it). The firecracker salad was refreshing and had a nice crunch. The pineapple fried rice was also good. However, the roti was not fresh and tasted reheated. If we just had the food it would've been a pleasant experience and I would give our experience 4 stars. Service was fine, but there were multiple staff coughing and walking around the whole restaurant. They did not look like they were working but possibly family of the owner. They were coughing and walking around our entire meal which was quite off putting. From the outside, you might take Mui Ngo Gai for being an average Vietnamese restaurant serving up some average Vietnamese eats. I was pleasantly surprised however to see the number of interesting items on their menu. Their Vegetarian offerings were particularly impressive. At many other Vietnamese restaurants I struggle to find just one option that's Vegetarian and actually appeals to my taste buds. Regardless, this is an item that we don't see often at Vietnamese restaurants so even though I didn't take part in eating it, I was still just impressed to see it being offered at this restaurant. The meat eaters all seemed happy with their food, so "shrinkflation" doesn't seem to have affected the quality of the food at this restaurant. I loved my Vegetarian Crepe! This is such a unique offering for a Vietnamese restaurant. In fact, never mind being Vietnamese...I havn't had a crepe like this anywhere before. The only other crepe I've had in Vietnamese restaurants are the steamed ones that contain minced pork. I wondered at first if my crepe was going to be some Vegetarian version of that steamed crepe, but it was completely different. I loved how crispy the tofu inside my crepe was. Mui Ngo Nai takes first place in my book for authentic and upscale Vietnamese / Singaporean dishes. We were incredibly impressed with the extensive menu organized by cuisine type which is great so you can choose your order depending on which cuisine you're feeling or both :) They also have tons of drinks that look and taste amaaazing. The avocado drink was my favorite, which the avocados imported from Vietnam, you really can taste the difference. I've never tried mud crab but after trying the chili mud crab here I am hooked! Warning: the prices on this menu aren't for the faint of heart.. This is one of the most expensive Vietnamese / Singaporean restaurants I've ever been to. The portions we got were also really small for the price. However, the food was good, and I'm willing to go again to try more. When my family and I went for Lunar New Years, they were doing a 20% off promotion on all Singaporean dishes, so that's all we got! To start, they gave us two complementary plates of fried spring rolls for Lunar New Years! So generous and they were pretty good. Crispy outside and good flavour, but the filling was a little mushy even for my soft mouth. I think it would have been better paired with a typical Vietnamese nuoc cham rather than a Thai sweet chili sauce. We got two orders of crispy fried chicken wings (came with eight pieces each). They were really good--crispy, tender, and moist. Again, I didn't enjoy the Thai sweet chili sauce, but that's my personal preference. However, these wings were delicious enough on their own to not need a dipping sauce. They also gave us a plate for bones--a very nice touch! For mains we got pineapple fried rice, fried kway teow, Singapore fried noodles, and black pepper chicken. The pineapple fried rice was only okay. There was a lot of pineapple and a lot of seafood though! Flavour in the dish itself was lacking. The fried kway teow was probably my favourite dish of the night--so saucey and flavourful! It was my first time trying and I loved it. A mix of flat rice noodles and egg noodles(?). The Singapore fried noodles (using vermicelli noodles) were also really good and the ssambal gave it a spicy kick. Both noodle dishes had an adequate amount of vegetables and seafood. The black pepper chicken was yummy, but definitely get rice to go with! It was a little too salty on its own. The onion pieces were really sweet and yummy as well--not strong or pungent like I was expecting. The service here was impeccable--I'm not sure I've ever had better service anywhere else. We were attended to extremely well and the servers felt genuinely kind. The newly renovated space feels very cozy and upscale. Perhaps one of the nicest restaurant decors I've ever seen in person. Looks like I'm the first reviewer since their big renovation. The website is now different - same thing but .com instead. FYI. The previous place sold it to a new owner, who is apparently a chef from Vietnam who also has restaurants in Malaysia and Singapore. So the waitress told me. They took over this business a few months ago and fully renovated it. They now serve a viet menu, as well as a new Singaporean menu. Personally I was very excited about this place. Singaporean staples like Chili Crab are next to impossible to find in metro Vancouver. Ive been to Singapore multiple times, had chili crab at many different places, and its easily one of my favourite Singaporean dishes. So expectations were high. When you walk into this restaurant, the exterior is very unassuming like the previous place, on a nondescript strip of Kingsway. Somewhat of a rundown neighborhood too. The restaurant itself however, was renovated to look like a movie set for a colonial era British museum. Like a place to have British afternoon tea in Las Vegas. Theres an artificial vibe to it. The waitresses are dressed like flight attendants with the hat and all. The waiters are dressed more typically. Background music was a loop of acoustic versions of popular songs. Place was clean for sure, but the vibe was super weird. All the food is served in over-the-top "fancy" dishware. In terms of service, they try to deliver fine-dining level service. keyword is "try" but it's clear they are new at this. They try to be attentive (kind of hard not to be when theres only 2 tables dining) but they constantly interrupt the meal at bad times. like when your mouth is full, hands are dirty, and ask you how the food is. They bring you a little basket of napkins. Just a pile of regular napkins you'd get at any fast food stand, but independently folded into triangles actually giving you more work to do to open it up to use it. They also heavily pushed the Singaporean chili crab, apparently their house special, and won some kind of award in Vietnam. so the menu said. There was a promo on since they're still new, and they discounted everything off the Singaporean menu. Ok now for the food. The chili crab. They served local Dungeness crab, which is fine. Crab was about 2 pounds, so on the small side, but tasted fresh. Classically in Singapore you would eat mud crabs but ppl love Dungeness there too. The waitress said they were in the process of importing mudcrabs from vietnam and dont have them quite yet. The key to chili crab is of course the sauce. And this is the problem. As a crab dish in itself, its not bad. But calling it Singaporean chili crab to someone who is very familiar with authentic versions of this dish, well it doesnt work. It's at best, Singaporean-inspired chili crab. Its a lot spicier (which is fine) but lacked a lot of the flavour, umami, and sweetness in the sauce I expected. Very one-dimensional sauce which was the biggest let down. And its not a cheap dish, even with a discount. There are lots of variations to Singaporean chili crab sauce, but this is an outlier. I have a hard time believing this dish sells well at the chef's Singapore restaurant, especially if its priced like this. I also ordered the Kang Kong Sambal. Another one of my favourites throughout Singapore and Malaysia. Basically its water spinach/On choy stirfried in Sambal. Again, the problem is the seasoning/sauce. Just salty, lacks that fermented shrimp flavour and umami it needs to have. To their credit, they only served the soft younger shoots which was nice. We also ordered a viet noodle dish, which was fine. Not much to talk about there. Prices for everything were very high, portions were smaller, and made you feel like the food is overpriced to cover their renovation expenses and costumes. I asked to take home some leftovers, and they brought a container so I can pack it myself. Bit weird if you're trying to be more of an upscale place but whatever. The promo discount for the Singaporean menu does make the prices easier to accept. IMO this should be the regular pricing. TLDR: If youve never had singaporean food, especially chili crab since its near impossible to find here, then this place is a rough approximation at very high prices with a weird "fancy" vibe. If you want authentic Singaporean food, this is not the place. If you want viet food, its fine, but there are much cheaper places in town to get that for just as good or better. read more

This place is just WEIRD. When we first walked in they wanted to seat us right next to the door with temps in the 40's, even though there were other tables available (and we had a reservation). Then of course we didn't know what was weirder, the elevator music or the 80's suburban French wannabe decor. Then the small plastic cup of water that they served tasted and smelled like it had a high level of chlorine. Wife said not to worry, as long as the food is good. First dish came out, Prawns with eggplant. Ugh. Tastes like sweet & sour from Panda Express. Our next dish was a Singapore Seafood Noodle. The picture in the menu showed 5 or 6 Prawns and at least as many Calamari rings. Neither were visible, but after digging around we found exactly two of each on the bottom of the dish. I told the waitress who sent over the manager who said, "Menu says that the photo may not represent exactly what the dish may look like". Yeah. Whenever I order a Seafood dish I never expect it to actually contain a decent amount of seafood or look vaguely like the photo on the menu. read more

Amazing Vietnamese / Singaporean food - we tried their mud crab with signature chili sauce and it was absolutely delicious! The crab meat was so good and it was perfect to dip the complimentary bread into the sauce! Their beef ribs were tender and great in flavours; ended the night with a nice tempura chocolate ice cream :) Overall great customer service too! read more

A must try restaurant which will blow you away with its amazing flavours. This restaurant is so unique and pretty inside and not to mention some of the dishes have flavours I never knew would be so good! * Prawn & papaya salad ($28) ~ the prawn and beef paired so well with the refreshing salad and the vinaigrette was so flavourful and the slight kick to it was delicious. I loved the crunch from the crisp because it paired so well to create the perfect bite. 9/10. * Mud crab Singapore chili crab sauce ($130.50) ~ so good I loved how good the sauce was it was flavourful with a nice kick. The sauce paired so well with the bread ($3). The bread was so soft and fresh it was delicious. 9/10. * Spicy frog with dried chili ($23) ~ this was delicious and yummy I loved how well it paired with the delicious porridge ($7). The porridge was thick and flavourful and despite the strong flavours from the frog it was not super salty but combined really nicely. 7/10. * Roti prata($5) ~ so flakey and crunchy. It was so good. I loved eating this with the chili mud crab sauce too! 9.5/10 * Chicken thread bean noodle soup ($22) ~ the noodles were so unique I loved the chewy noodles and the chicken was so soft and nice with the garlic chips on top. The broth was clear and light which paired nicely with all the other dishes. 6.5/10. * Whole sambal squid ($28) ~ this was delicious perfectly cooked not overly chewy. The onions were grilled perfectly and so good with the spicy flavourful sauce. 8/10. * Grilled eggplant with prawn ($28) ~ this was unique the prawns paired well with the eggplant.
