Have you ever been sad? Overworked and underpaid? Stressed by life's little foibles? Then please give yourself a bear hug in the form of food--PHO. Pho 14 is the best of DC. First of all, if you dine in you will be BLOWN by the service. Waiters are attentive, friendly to a fault, and incredibly respectful. The interior is clean and welcoming. It's a super casual atmosphere. Delivery is also a treat. One rainy Thursday evening after work I ordered Pho 14 and realized that I had gotten the wrong order after waiting an hour for my food. I called and the girl on the phone apologized PROFUSELY and had a driver run me the correct order immediately; and they let me keep both orders. The employees are A+. The pho is so tasty. The broth is incredibly complex and flavorful. I always order Tai (eye round of steak) or Chin (brisket). You get tons of fixin's to go with your pho--bean sprouts, lime wedges, spicy hot sauce, savory brown sauce, basil leaves. The way they package the sides for delivery is kind of neat/delightful--imagine winning a goldfish at the fair (puffed up plastic sack tied at the top) but instead of a half-dead beta fish inside, it's a mini arboretum of goodies. This small attention to detail is why Pho 14 is so good! Add together the fixin's, your meat (or veggies or seafood) into the broth and noodles in a huge bowl and we're in business. There have been times when I get Pho 14 and I can literally feel the nutrition, energy, and happiness seeping into my being. It's phenomenal. I also recommend the summer rolls as an appetizer. Their smoothies are really tasty too--my friend and I got mango and avocado, and the avocado was the winner. Oh, and the prices are really fair--I've had a full dine in meal with soup and appetizers and beverage WITH tip for $20!! Please get yourself into a store or order delivery tonight. I've never had their Pho but my ratings are for their banh mi, spring rolls, and bun cha (cold vermicelli noodles). Their banh mi's just aren't consistent and sometimes the meat has a super funky weird aftertaste. The sandwich is also very scantily clad with veggies. If I'm paying that much for a banh mi, I should be getting way more! Their fried spring rolls and regular spring rolls are good but WAY overpriced for what you really get. For the fried spring rolls, sometimes the dipping sauce also has a weird after taste that just isn't right. I spent the summer in Vietnam eating all sorts of bun cha, both in the north and south. So when I came home, I had insatiable bun cha cravings so I came to Pho 14 to finally try their noodle dishes. I ordered their shrimp one and the noodles were okay, a little too over cooked and slimy for my liking. Again, if I'm going to be paying that much, I should be getting more veggies. There was something about the sauce. There just isn't something right about them. I've also tried both their thai iced teas and iced vietnamese coffees and it's just off in taste and overly sweet. You also don't get any refills so don't even bother. This place gets packed quickly so make sure you get here early. All my friends who are pho lovers do this instead of sizing up: extra noodles with the regular sized. You get way more food that way since the large just happens to be more broth! They deliver too and the food comes packaged really well except the soup doesn't stay hot enough to cook up your meat. I don't know what it is but I come here often with my friends and their sauces just have the weirdest aftertaste that even Siracha can't cover with its magic. read more

Finally! There's somewhere convenient to turn to on those cold windy winter nights in Van Ness. If steaming flavorful soup, noodles with real substance, and loads of meat sound good to you, then Pho 14's new location in Van Ness will be right up your alley. The regular bowls are a little pricey at almost $9 an order but it's authentic, served with rare meat in hot soup.Lukewarm pho with a few sad overcooked excuses for beef tossed in there is a personal pet peeve but this pho shop doesn't skimp on the meat, especially if you like the stuff besides round eye steak. That being said, the regular size could have used more noodles. I strongly recommend that you go with the large size. It's only $1 more but looks like you get about twice the noodles. Since it was the grand opening, they dolled out complimentary thai iced teas, which were sweet, creamy, and just a great balance to an appropriately salty meal. Do not get this if you're on a diet. It's like sweat tea with a lot of half and half, just the way thai iced tea should be! They also get an A+ for service. Our waitress, Kim was very friendly and even brought out a thai iced tea minus the half and half for our lactose-averse friend. Plus, they get a shiny star for bringing out the food quickly, good for future moments of perceived starvation. I noticed that there are a plethora of other saliva-inducing items on the menu (i.e. banh mi under $5!, spring rolls, etc.) that I'll definitely be coming back to try. read more

I think this place has gotten better. Not that it was bad before, but I didn't like it as much last time. We ordered online and picked up takeout this evening, and everything was ready and waiting right on time. We got the veggie spring rolls - the fresh ones that come wrapped in rice paper - and they were great. I love the fresh basil in them, and the sauce was delish. We both got chicken pho, and we agreed that it had great flavor. The noodles were perfect, too. On top of all that, it was packaged to-go very well. I still think the pho is a little on the expensive side, but I'm used to getting pho in SIlver Spring or Rockville, where I'm sure the rent is cheaper. If someone didn't give this place at least 4 stars, you know they don't live in Van Ness. If this place is only three stars, where exactly, pray tell AM I supposed to find food other than my kitchen in Van Ness? Do you own stock in Epicurean and Co. or something? Van Ness is a neglected spot for food. Pho 14 is delicious and not too expensive. We got there at least once a week. The vegetarian and vegan options taste good, and there's a vegetarian version of the pho, bahn mi, fried rice and vermicelli. The vegetarian pho is better than others I've had because of the veggies. If you don't get the vegetarian version, you can add shiitake mushrooms, carrots or broccoli for 50 cents. YUM. Also the noise level never gets too high even when it's crowded. It's just really pleasant in there. They have outdoor seating, but it never seems to be quite nice and cool enough outside when I go there, so I haven't tried it out yet. Get the jasmine iced tea. RIPPED OFF AGAIN NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! After giving this place a second chance, I spoke to (Two) the gentleman taking the orders for take out and took the time to explain to him that our first experience with take out had been far from good. We had ordered larges and were barely given smalls. I also explained to him that I was giving this place a second chance based on my husband being in the area and wanted Pho, and was close by. I said to him 'Please check the order which by the way consisted of 1 #19. and 2 #16 before it goes out as I had a previous bad experience where I was ordered and was charged for large PHO and barely got a small portion, broth, fixings, and MEAT! So being in a rush he grabbed it and delivered it too me at work in Bethesda! I opened it up to find 4 pieces of meat and barely a handful of noodles!!! AGAIN THEY GOT ME! Paid $35 for 3 LARGES and once again got less than smaller portions. So of course I call back and speak to (Two) again, who told me a large should consist of at least 8-9 pieces of meat, and def more noodles then half a hand full, I was asked to hold on, HE knew I was very upset especially since he and I had that warning conversation prior to placing my order. Then the manager (Maing, spelling) got on the phone and offered " if I hadn't touched and or began eating my order/s she would re-make them and deliver others in its place, not realizing at them time I was in Bethesda and NOT DC. I told her it was to late as everyone had started to eat but was calling in to let her know once again I was ripped off! The appropriate thing would have been to deliver them REGARDLESS.......but instead offered 25% off since "I had already started to eat my order! Great but that barely pays for the gas. Thank god I live in MD and work in MD. I mean shouldn't the owner/manager be looking at the food and what she sends out to HER customers. The broth is great folks, so it is really sad that they would jeopardize themselves YET AGAIN for such foolish portions!!! I've been in bed sick for three days with the flu, and I thought I'd have some Pho delivered for my grumbling tummy. I made sure I called the right location and was prepared to tip on top of the $2.95 delivery fee, when they tell me that there's a $15 minimum for delivery orders. I said, "I'm only one person, I'm sick and I don't want to leave the house. I just want some pho." They said, "It's our policy." I said, "It's not listed on your website." They said, "Go look at the website." I said, "I'm on the website right now, scrolling through all the pages and it doesn't say that anywhere on here." Then they had me talk to two other people. They said, "Sorry. We can't help you. It's our policy." Seriously? You can't bring a girl some soup when she's been in bed sick for three days? That's ridiculous. Plus, after tax and the $2.95 delivery charge, my order would have been over $14. They also told me that they only deliver within a two-mile radius. That's a pretty hefty minimum and delivery fee for a two mile radius. I'll steer clear of Pho 14 and their heartless customer service for my tenure in DC. read more

Very glad that this placed has sprouted in the food desert that is the Van Ness Metro stop! The pho had a well balanced broth of anise/cinnamon and maybe a hint of cloves, and the rice noodles were at the right level of chewiness. I might have preferred a little more pink and marbled fat in my pho meat, but the cuts were pretty good and a reasonable amount. The spring rolls, though a little small were also pretty good with a chewy rice paper exterior. Will be back to check out the rest of the menu! It's very dangerous when a place with food this good is only steps from your apartment. The food is delicious, both dining in and for take-out/delivery. I traveled through Vietnam this summer and fell in love with a new dish: bun bo, or vermicelli noodles with beef. Pho 14's version is superb! Warm rice noodles, chewy, flavorful beef that's clearly been marinated in some sort of sauce, topped off with fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, peanuts, and a chili sauce. I could eat this for days. Oops, I already have. No, seriously, everything on the menu is good. If I'm not getting bun bo, I'll usually opt for fresh rolls, or chicken pho. You can't go wrong! My experience: The service was awful. The waiter kept trying to seat couples at a table really close to two ditzy high school girls, rather than take a few seconds to clear another table. Two parties were seated there and requested to move to other tables. The waitress forgot our order. When I finally got my pho, it took additional time to get the lime wedge and bean spouts. I'm a black woman who came into the Van Ness location. First one to come in, last one to be served. Nearly 15 minutes passed and no one took my order, despite making eye contact with the waiter numerous times. I noticed that the waiter began watching tv, and I actually had to walk up to him before he finally took my order ( takeout). During this time, numerous people walked in and were offered water and several got their food. I was not offered water until after I paid. In total, I waited nearly 40 min before I got my order. I know in my gut that this was not simply because they were busy. Needless to say, I will not be coming back again. If you're black or care about racism, don't eat here. had a good pho here while visiting the zoo and dc itself. The broth was a bit sweeter than what I am used to but it was delicious. The noodles were well cooked and the beef was very tender. Nice spacious place, very clean. We both had drinks after our meal: thai iced tea and vietnamese iced coffee. Wow. Just wow. I think Van Ness finally got a good restaurant. The service here was extremely fast. My friend and I got to the restaurant around 8 PM and were immediately seated. We ordered a banh mi to share (a bit expensive at $9.99 a sandwich) and a vegetarian pho and an option 1 pho (it had tripe, beef tendon, and tons of other beef yumminess). The banh mi was immediately served and the pho was presented pretty soon after. Let's start out with the not-so-good. The banh mi was pretty yummy, not necessarily the best I've ever had, but perhaps that's only because I like the eggy vegetarian one that Pho Nom Nom serves. The pho on the other hand (I got the beef-filled one) was delicious. Pho 14 didn't hold back on the meat-- I hate it when restaurants put 5 pieces of meat in their soup and call it a meal. There was a bunch tendons and beef slices in my soup. The large was a great deal and the waitress/waiters were very nice in bringing out extra bean sprouts, limes, and jalapeño peppers. read more

Luckily, some restaurateurs have finally discovered the long neglected, densely populated Van Ness strip, and Pho 14 is reaping the benefits -- it was standing room only tonight in their sterile, efficiently run dining room. What is here is much like the other two branches of Pho 14 -- mediocre Vietnamese food (particularly the tasteless banh mi served with tough, stringy chicken), far too sweet pho broth, and reasonable prices. I suspect this one will flourish due to the paucity of other neighborhood options, but eating here might make you want to hop into your car and drive to Wheaton for the real deal. How did I live right next to this restaurant for several months and never visit it? I am a huge fan of pho so I was excited to finally visit Pho 14, which is located about a block south of the Van Ness metro. I ordered the large chicken pho soup (Pho Ga) and I was a bit disappointed because the soup was so ... heavy and spicy but not in a good way. I LOVE pho and have been eating it for years and years across coasts. And I've had specialty spicy pho before too, which I absolutely loved. But there was something about the pho at Pho 14 that didn't quite sit well with me - it made my throat burn and my stomach burn as well, even though I couldn't quite pinpoint what the issue was, as the soup wasn't even spicy to the taste. But the service was really good and the restaurant was clean and classy, so I can't bring myself to give any less than 3 stars to this place. I only visited Pho 14 once, but I would perhaps visit again if I'm in that area again in the future. read more

I have been here several times due to its close vicinity to my girlfriend's house. Their pho is decent. Nothing special about them but it does the job. Why the low rating of meager 2 stars you maya ask? Their service is atrocious. My vegan girlfriend asked for vegetarian egg rolls and noticed that something was off. Server told us that fish sauce inside could be the reason. That's not quite vegetarian... so we asked to take the food back after a bite and to have the item taken off. However, manager or owner, who was apparently dining right next to us like a customer walks over while still chewing food in her mouth, and tells us that she can't take it off. It's really not the matter of $5 but the principle of not getting what you ordered and taking it back to be tossed and getting charged for it pissed me off. We told the manager that she just lost a customer because we would dine in or order takeout from them on biweekly basis. I could understand slow service and at time unprofessional way they manage the business, but this was final straw. Highly recommend against going to this place. read more

Well, this is only my second time here, but I was sorely disappointed. First, the air conditioner was not working so it was stifling inside. We decided to brave it anyway and just eat outside. Next, although there were only three other guests in the restaurant, we had to wait 30 min for our food; no one came to check on us; and we had to go inside to ask for our check. Finally, the fried rice with tofu was much more flavorful than the last time I went, so that was good; but the eggrolls were the worst I've ever had, tasting more like a mouthful of oil than food. I walked in and the hostess appeared busy but relatively friendly. Ordered large pho ga and vegetarian garden rolls. 15 minutes later I returned and the hostess assured me the food wasn't ready, when I saw the order to the side of the bar. After taking the order home, I realized that I was really shorted on the broth, ablut 80% full and the amount of noodles and goodies were small too. Paying almost $10 for a large pho was too expensive for what I received. The veggie garden a were small and lacking filling. The peanut sauce was "eh". All in all, I would not recommend this place and recommend going 2 miles down the road to "Nam Viet" in Cleveland Park. Trendy and Popular Pho 14,not so much. Having never had "good" pho before, my best friend was determined to get me into the craze. We stopped off at Pho 14 after checking out my new apartment in the Forest Hills area. The atmosphere is basically like every other Asian restaurant in area - black lacquer, vases, and huge indoor plants. Nothing too special. The pho, however... was... GREAT! I chose the #18 Pho Ga - not adventurous, but super delicious. All of the extras: cilantro, jalapenos, bean spouts and lime were very fresh and made the broth sing. The only negative - not enough noodles. The next time I order, I'll get an extra side - don't want that broth to go to waste! We also ordered some of grilled chicken skewers as an appetizer, but they weren't much to write home about - the pho is the real star here! Pho 14 is officially my permanent, local go-to joint! I've been going here 2-3 times a week since it opened and I have never been disappointed. And judging by the patronage, I'm not alone in appreciating their great pho. My personal favorite is the the large #5. A HUGE bowl of noodles and broth, with slices of various familiar cuts of beef as well as tripe and soft tendon. Now, those last two items may seem intimidating but trust me, they only add to the textural component of the dish. For the newbies of pho, I would recommend the #16 which just has the eye-round of beef (It's very tame). As you get more adventurous, go up the list and start adding more components. This place....le sigh. The food is great. No issue. My issue arises when you order delivery or pick up. I've done it multiple times and i've given them the benefit of the doubt but alas....not better. Every time I order a LARGE it seems I get a regular size for the extra price and I also order meatballs to be added and I get like..2...really i get ONE meatball and it is sliced in 2 pieces. This happens with all the extras. Today I ordered and was charged $14.00. Large is $10 + $3 for meatballs + taxes. Once again I received a small bowl ,small amount of everything, the extra meatballs? well , I literally got 1 1/4. that's it. While the food is awesome, don't order to go or pick up because its not worth the price and you will still be hungry. If I ever eat there, i will sit down to ensure I get the giant large bowl (its stupidly big...no chance this is what they give me when i order for pick up.) as it will be the only way that i get what I paid for. read more

One suggestion if you want to order via Uber Eats: don't. When my delivery arrived it was missing 3/4 of the order. When I called and asked what happened and how to get the rest - the man suggested I call Uber Eats and have Uber Eats resolve it. Really? They finally agreed to deliver the remainder of the order. 1 hr later our food arrived ice cold. It had been sitting for for all that time. Heated up in the microwave to make it palatable.
