When I first moved up here, this place was one of my favorite spots for Pho. A price of a bowl was around $4 but now they increased it to $5 something for a small and $7 for large. I like it how they give you options for the sizes because not many places offer that. The smell of pho here reminds me of my mom's cooking. The beef broth is tasty and you can always add condiments on top it. All pho comes with a side of bean sprouts, basils, jalapenos and slices of limes. I came to this hole in the wall looking for some authentic good pho. We were seated immediately by a girl who was the only server, dish clearer, and everything other than making the food. You would think the service would be slow and bad, but everything was speedy! Waters came in 1 minute, and food came in less than 5 minutes! This place pretty much only has PHO. My friend and I were leaving town to head back to Wisconsin and we wanted to grab a quick dinner and wanted Asian. This place was on the way and it was not busy. Street parking was great and service was prompt. We didn't even wait that long for the Pho to come out. It was so good. The soup was perfectly hot and with chili oil-- it was even better. I got some recommendations and we drove over to University. Our first choice was about to close so we headed eastward. We spotted Pho Ca Dao, saw the lights on, parked, noted there aren't business hours posted, and hesitantly entered the building. There was only one other table and it took a moment for the waitress to appear. Thankfully they were still open and serving at 8pm. Let me take a moment to address complaints by other Yelpers. No, it's not the cleanest place ever. But it wasn't dirtier than I expected or scary run away filthy. No they don't have a huge menu. It's a pho joint. If you want something else then go elsewhere. No they don't accept cards (or checks). Cash only. This is common for small businesses and I wasn't surprised at all. No the service is not stellar. But again, in this type of establishment it's common for them to drop off your food and take your money and that's it, not hold your hand or ask how your day was. With that all out of the way, let's get to the business at hand: the pho. Pho Ca Dao has a unique "build your own pho" menu, so my boyfriend selected three kinds of beef, while I went with pho ga (chicken). There are no vegetarian options, which is the only thing that made me a little sad. If you are so daring/authentic as to try tripe or tendon, they got em here. We also ordered a side of egg rolls, which were piping hot, but unremarkable. The pho, however, was delicious! Absolutely hit the spot. And it cost under $20 to feed both of us!! I still want to try some other places on my list, but I would come back here when the pho craving strikes again. The owner ("Alex") came out from the kitchen as we were leaving and asked how our meal was. This is my go-to place for Pho. I always get the #1 as it's got all of the semi scary stuff in it, but tripe and tendon is good for you, right? It's not got a million dollar interior like Mai Village, but then again, the portion sizes and prices reflect their humble establishment. This is the best bowl of pho available. It's a dive, for sure. The pho is cheap. The broth is so beefy you can practically hear it moo at you! If you drop something on the floor, don't ever touch it again, even your wedding ring. Just kick it under the table and ask for another bowl. There is no other sane explanation. To me, a dumb gringo from a family that couldn't cook outside of a shake n' bake box, there is some kind of magic at work here, some kind of enchanting going on. Every time I enter this dirty, humble little place, my stomach says a prayer of thanks, for, as the pirate queen stated at the end of the Las Vegas light show I once witnessed, "the treasure's on the inside." Pho got trendy with white people a few years ago in St. Paul, and there are some really anglified, clean, upscale pho joints around, but man, their pho cant' hold a candle to Pho Ca Dao. I was mortified at the thought that Pho Ca Dao might close or go out of business during the light rail expanson that took place on University Ave after I moved to Portland. THE BEST. Sometimes you just get it right. I guess I'm not a Pho expert, but this place really does it for me. I'd take this place over anywhere on Nicollet. It screams authentic in ways none of them do. 1. The menu consists of Pho, eggrolls, and drinks. Eggrolls are on the menu. You get two for ~$3. You aren't there for eggrolls, you are there for Pho. 2. You can choose 3 sizes of Pho. I usually can get by w the Large, XL is good if I'm really hungry. The small satisfies many people with smaller appetites, and kids. People often bring their kids there, hence they have numerous sizes. Makes perfect sense. 3. I'm a white boy, and I'm usually at the table with the only white people in the place. If it's a Vietnamese place consistently packed with Asian people, I'm going to take that as being good. 4. The few blocks of Frogtown where it is located are decidedly not that pretty, yet this place always has people in it, and can get downright packed. 5. They do not go out of their way to make the place aesthetically pleasing, and it's cash only. Yet it always has people in it. Read between the lines. 6. It's not your typical customer service focused restaurant. You might have to ask to get your water refilled, they remember what you order when you pay. Now, in my opinion, the broth is what makes an amazing bowl of pho...and this place certainly delivered on that. The broth is light, with a light star anise flavor - some places use a ton of this, some just a bit - not super oily and not completely loaded with MSG. It was Monday, recovery day after a long weekend of drinking. I needed the "hangover cure" so I decided to stop in here since many people I know say their pho is good. I guess many people are wrong. Rations are small. I make better egg rolls at home. Never got my water refilled. Cash only. The place looked dirty. I guess they're going for the hole in the wall look. My pho was a large. it looked like a small. I ordered the special combination (#2). It was supposed to come with flank, tendon, tripe, and meatballs. All I got was flank meat. I must have gotten 1 meatball sliced extra thin so that it looked like I had a lot and no tendon. What a rip off. This was my second time here in 10 years. The very first time was not good either, but I remember it being better than my second visit. This is the best Pho in the twin cities. Sadly, they do not have the best eggrolls.. Quang in Minneapolis still has the best eggrolls. But I will never eat Pho anywhere in Minnesota, but here. So my review is on just the Pho. Which is the best. and it is a great price. read more

First things first, I went here on a recommendation even after I had been to Quang's. It's located off of University in the "heart" of many Asian restaurants and markets, right on the corner of Arundel and University. You can park on the street or in a little lot behind the restaurant. All the other reviews hit the nail on the head concerning the cleanliness of this place. Combine that with the fact that this place only takes cash and you are well on your way to -1 star. We sit down, get a "menu" which basically just consists of different types of Pho you can order, with 3 different sizes to choose from. The small is suitable for small children and if you just aren't hungry, medium is just right, and the large isn't extreme, but it will satiate your hunger. We order 1 medium, 1 large, and because they have signs on the wall that they offer eggrolls (not on the menu), I order one to get the entire experience. The egg rolls were fried fresh, still quit hot, and maintain the status quo. What I didn't realize was that 2 little egg rolls cost ~$3.00 - that I wasn't very happy about, but it's my own fault for not asking. The Pho was okay, the broth was decent but nothing to write home about. The waitress didn't come back over to our table after we finished, so we walked up to the window they have to pay. They didn't ask us where we sat, or what we ordered - they just tallied up our order and told me how much it cost - like others have said, keep a mental tally of how much you spent because there's really no way to know if they are charging you correctly or not...-1 star. This place basically does only one thing, and it does it amazingly well: Pho. Great for late breakfast, hangover lunch, or cold days. The restaurant has about sixteen variations of their concoction on the menu but I usually opt for the small (the place also sells large and x-large variations - I wouldn't think of going x-large, but on rare days when I want to put down a lot of broth, I'll go for the large) #15 and a vietnamese coffee. I've seen other patrons get an extra side of raw beef to add in, and I will definitely be trying this in the future. I was mostly inspired to write this short review, because the University Ave area is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate due to construction. This is disappointing because there are a lot of great spots along the three-mile stretch. I highly suggest visiting this place before construction moves to the other side of the street, because once it does, you may be less likely to visit this hole-in-the-wall unless you've already tasted the best pho in St. Paul. read more
